00:30
morning.
Wow... QML looks really interesting.
um... hey @Oli @MarcoCeppi @StefanoPalazzo...
i accidentially flagged something as "Not an Answer"
but in hindsight, i read through...
and its actually an answer
just formatted so poorly it looked like not an answer

Q: DVB-T sound in VLC is jittering

WitekAfter upgrading to Natty sound is jittering in VLC when watching DVB-T. About every 5 seconds the sounds stops for milliseconds, which is annoying. DVB-T sound works fine in MPlayer. Probably this is a bug in VLC. How to get this fixed in Natty?

the answer there was marked by me as not an answer mistakenly
@TheEvilPhoenix removed the flag
00:34
thanks
What to install for mysql? http://bit.ly/oA5WTU #mysql
@StefanoPalazzo there's at least one more flag in the system from me :P
and these are NOT accidential flags :P
I am wondering is all the new question that is being posted on AskUbuntu.com being sent here?
@JohanSJA no, only ones with certain hashtags
afaik at least
00:40
@StefanoPalazzo its strange how i flag so often, and my score fluctuated down to 546 and in a matter of a day its almost 600 again :p
perhaps i have too much spare time on hand...?
@TheEvilPhoenix yeah your flags are pretty awesome though
now for 700 :-)
I love the WebM encoder in FFMPEG - it is FAST.
I thought people stopped using animated GIFs...
@GeorgeEdison , that animation is nice
Yeah, but it's on the OpenGL.org home page.
anyway, how long have you all been in AskUbuntu.com? How do you compare AskUbuntu.com and other Ubuntu forum?
00:52
@JohanSJA I prefer it to the Ubuntu forums.
agreed with @George
I have been a member since literally the minute it launched.
I was (no joke) refreshing the page constantly until the site came online.
:) OK. I love chasing for the award also.
00:59
anyone mind if i go on a rant about how Dell support sucks major ****?
because its their fault i'm once again stuck with windows instead of Linux
@TheEvilPhoenix , no problem.
and their fault a replacement drive for this dying Windows drive stopped operating mid-operation
What are they requesting?
they arent requesting anything
let me go through the course of events:
(1) I go to Dell's support site. I go to tech support. They ask for my system's service tag.
(2) I enter the tag, and get sent to hardware support for this system.
(3) Upon telling them this is in regards to a consumer parts order, i get transferred.
(4) 40 minutes after the transfer and after talking with the support agent, they are about to redirect me to the hardware support for my system
(5) 40 MORE minutes go by, and they FINALLY decide to replace the drive and take the defective one back.
</massive rage>
Hi there, I need to know how do I make my bluetooth dongle work, I'm getting root@maiko-cce-lin:~# hciconfig hci0 reset
Can't init device hci0: Connection timed out (110)
01:04
@TheEvilPhoenix , I always refer Dell as the best support. But it doesn't seem to be fit in your situation.
indeed not
they got a bit of a rant from me too
lemme finish the tech support chat with them
then i'll provide some of the logs
just to amuse you all
and satisfy my need to rant
sure
no problem
@MaikoID , I have no idea on that
and I thank the mods for allowing me this one-time rant
:P
my Bluetooth dongle works upon plug-in
sounds like the device isnt communicating with the system correctly
could be one of a billion reasons
ranging from hardware problems to OS issues
you'd probably be better posting a question about it ot AskUbuntu, @MaikoID
or Unix&Linux, if you're not using Ubuntu
@StefanoPalazzo btw, you missed a flag :P
01:09
what is a flag for?
I'm missing sleep first of all :D
(it's 3:10)
I'll be off, bye guys o/
Hi, I already post it there (askubuntu) and I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, what is the url for unix&linux stack ?
obs: how can I send a message direct to you, how you did with my nick ?
01:34
And now I go back to my brief rant to the Supervisor of Dell Support.
After finally getting my issue resolved...
I get transferred to a supervisor.
Who subsequently WELCOMES my rant.
(and keep in mind, I did have a thought to type this in all caps, but I didnt)
so now i'm stuck on Winsucks, and i'm somewhat annoyed
oh, what joy... >.>
@JohanSJA A flag is to get a moderator to attend to a question/answer/comoment. Usually they identify bad questions, offtopic questions, answers that arent really answers, etc.
Oh I see
and i am sorry to the entire chat room that you had to endure my rant
@StefanoPalazzo just deleted one of my answer attempt. But it is OK. Still need some time to get used to this AskUbuntu.com 'culture'.
but be glad I at least didnt cause a massive explosion of energies in subspace... that would have imploded the universe.
@JohanSJA you could always just refer me to your questions/answers...
I tend to flag if its bad xD
then its destroyed.
With fire.
And brimstone
And a massive explosion.
:P
that's ok. I guess you guys are just trying to keep AskUbuntu.com 'clean' which is a good thing in first place.
01:43
And the explosion would be fiery xD
so finally your got your hard disk fixed?
nope, its dead
they're sending a replacement
after a decent sized rant
and a good rant to their supervisor :P
so your hardware is still under warranty?
mhm
thankfully
:P
That's good then. So you are dual-booting your Dell?
01:58
i will be
when i get the new drive
AND my windows OEM media/key
since my current drive's windows key cannot be used again...
i had to get new media and a new key.
why is it so? I thought that Windows OEM Key is stored in the BIOS chipset rather than the hdd.
except that the key for this system is for XP
i need to reinstall to a new drive
and the hardware change will result in the key being invalidated
trust me, i've worked with this stuff for a while - i'm a tech-in-training for windows (A+ certification)
@TheEvilPhoenix , just asking since that is what I understand.
understandable
Dell is picky though
while the service tags are stored in the system, the OEM product keys for new windows installs don't get stored

Q: How do I make my USB Bluetooth dongle work? (Can't init device hci0: Connection timed out (110))

MaikoIDI've a USB bluetooth dongle root@maiko-cce-lin:~# lsusb | grep Bluetooth Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0a12:0001 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode) that isn't working properly, hardly-ever it works but stops working in my next reboot. what I've tried it isn't software blocked...

02:08
that's what i'm using, new windows installs
STFU @UbuntuQuestionsonUL
02:39
I don't really care now. I just got a Dell laptop last two weeks. And I basically replace the Windows installation. Never thought of going back to Windows anyway.
so I wanna copy all the fonts from my mac to my linux machine but there's tons of files with a "._" in front of them
the thing is those ._ files are important
it seems
most of the time they have data like 40k or so
but the file with the file name without the ._ has zero data
O_o
copy the file with data
other are indexed thingys from the osx filesystem
@juancarlospaco, and then I could just rename the files to get rid of the ._ I guess huh
yes
pyrenamer
02:50

(moved)
03:04

03:22
all my files in a directory have a "thm_" prefix
how do I get rid of that
for example
mv thm_* *
mv thm_*
or rename thm_*
03:40
Why does unplugging my laptop trigger a 'lid close' event? http://bit.ly/mShk6c #1104
@JoshuaRobison install pyrenamer
03:56
How can we check what are the badges available overall?
on the Profile (?)
@juancarlospaco I can only see my badges in my profile. I am wondering what are other badges that are available to grab.
ah
mmm i dunno, i think its on the help of the page
04:20

ME WANTZ ARDUINO!
lol
eas up on the caffeine...
Serial may sound like a tasty breakfast food, but its actually quite different. The word serial means "one after the other." For example, a serial killer doesn't stop with one murder, but stabs many people one after the other. Serial data transfer is when we transfer data one bit at a time, one right after the other.
LOL
11:47
i hate source code :/
Learn's
C
lol
it was coded in python lol
so what?!

A: What to install for mysql?

user389850Alternatively, you can use postgresql, which is widely (universally?) supported among web host services. (My website on lunarpages supports it fully.): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PostgreSQL It may have a favorable aura respecting free software. It is highly capable and is, I think, functionall...

i answered the question and this user posts something about PostgreSQL
which is unrelated to the question.
and sounds like advertising a tiny bit
@TheEvilPhoenix FAIL!

@TheEvilPhoenix Is gone now, thanks.
Give this bit of code to george and ask him to please try it with his uno
#include  <LiquidCrystal.h>

LiquidCrystal lcd(12, 11, 5, 4, 3, 2);

byte newChar[8] = {

@Oli thanks for burning it :)
Shall thy be trusteth? @TheEvilPhoenix

@Amithkk shall thy be placed on ignore?

@Oli migrate worthy question? (if so, i flagged it. :P)

Q: Need minimal linux distro, with install size less atmost 250 - 300 mb

Ahsan MumtazI need a distro of Linux with occupies 250 to 300 mb as an install size on HDD... This distro should be able to run C programs (NOT COMPILE!! just execute)... and must be compatible with grub2 (NEED TO USE 'GRUB-REBOOT'). Please let me know if some have an idea that which distro can be useful...

Oli
Oli
Yeah that's migrated now.
:)
@Oli question. upon migration, does a question get untagged at the destination site?
@TheEvilPhoenix Yes
same would apply if, say, an internal migration from meta to main or main to meta would occur?
(in the event someone posted a support question in meta, or posted a meta question in main)
@TheEvilPhoenix Correct
13:33
i see.
in an internal migration, do mods usually retag the question accordingly, or do you wait for retag/edit-permission people to retag it?
13:45
@TheEvilPhoenix I usually let someone else do it - I'm pretty bad at tagging things (since I actually started the now infamous [ubuntu-desktop] tag)
lol
@MarcoCeppi so you'd rather migrate it then let someone such as myself with retagging privs redo the tags
(like on that question that @Oli sent over to U&L)
Basically
i hate to say it... but...
@MarcoCeppi lazy. much? :P
13:49
mod_lazy
and what caused that tag to be considered infamous?
Oli
Oli
@TheEvilPhoenix Why did we nuke it? It was getting used for far too many questions, to the point where there's no purpose in having it.
ah
one of those "catch-all" tags
Oli
Oli
You might as well have a tag.
:P
lol
oh good i just got an area51 proposal shot down because it has no basis to create an se site.

13:55
It also doesn't really portray much unless you're talking about the ubuntu-desktop metapackage... And I don't think any of the questions that were using it were.
14:29
@TheEvilPhoenix It was a meta tag: it's longevity meta.askubuntu.com/search?q=ubuntu-desktop
ehh, I prefer @oli's explanation, @Marco xD
but lol this one is pretty funny to see in that list, @Marco

Q: Is the ubuntu-desktop tag immortal ?

MaximeAs of 2011-01-18, Jeff Atwood deleted the ubuntu-desktop tag. One day later there are already new ubuntu-desktop questions. Considering all askers are relatively new to askubuntu, I suppose they were not addicted to this particular tag. Was the tag still available in tag suggestions ? It may b...
