However, I don't eat skittles that often anyway.

@FEichinger You're right, this particular one doesn't look all that great.

how does bash integrate history? like, what is the line of code that makes that work?
Since none of the haters have commented on why, could folks take a look and see if they see it, or upvote if they don't? askubuntu.com/a/63097/8500
I'm sorry, what?
people keep downvoting that answer without saying why... I don't see any reason why it isn't a good answer....
@psusi head /boot/grub/grub.cfg
@j0h It is stored in ~/.bash_history

Q: Strange PHP behavior on a LAMP server

MathClownI have installed the last LAMP server version 13.10 this PHP script works fine: #?php phpinfo() ?# This doesn't: #?php echo 'test'; ?# Same file same directory same everything...... I am confused... Any idea?

gs has a shell, but no history functions.
@FEichinger --^
02:36
@Oli, yes, and I rebutted it
and people will vote how they want.
@Oli, it would be bad if it was meant to be permanent, but the OP specifically said it should only be temporary, so...
@Seth ... Hash ... Ugh ...
@psusi yeah but even if OP says is temporary... the unbootable state is not if he do something wrong...
@Braiam, I said that was a false statement as well.. worst thing is you get the wrong default
02:39
@Seth What worries me is that the first works.
It should be the other way around, if I'm not missing something.
(Also, again: Hash, ugh. Look at the revision history and fix that, I'm not suggesting an edit over this.)
Oli
Oli
@FEichinger Yeah I've put the right-angle brackets back in.
j0h

<> instead of ## @seth
@psusi no, worst thing is that he can't boot his system and that's pretty bad already
j0h
j0h
also, must name scripts *.php
@j0h See revision history. 'twas a parser circumvention.
@j0h And since the phpinfo() one works and the user says "same file", I assume that's already the case. (And also not actually required, but that gets into specifics about the interpreter.)
j0h
j0h
02:42
name of scripts?
But, I'm still stumped ... The first one should be broken, the second should work ...
j0h
j0h
yes, its not required.
but its a basci question
assuming basic setup
both work fine for me
I have a suspicion, but I'll need more details.

@Braiam, what? no! he just wants to be able to reboot into windows...
Point is, whatever's causing these results isn't related to the code.
without having to pick it at the console since it's a remote server
j0h
j0h
would apache logs have the error?
03:03
@j0h If it's a server error, sure. But I doubt it is. And if it isn't, the log will just be a massive pile of not-helpful.
j0h
j0h
we only want the last line.
I guess I should have said tail
then again, Im also assuming the server isnt taking much traffic yet
Anyone know a recent free pdf on eps programming

@kalina I have been removing the loud all caps for some time and I have noticed an additional pattern in the loud noise. People who use all caps are frequently people who are uncertain about their English, and they are using the all caps to peacefully autoflag the post so that an editor will correct the grammatical errors. Shouting, on the other hand, I have come to associate with rudeness.
I installed Lubuntu 13.10, and Xubuntu 13.10 in my Lenovo S110 mini. While Ubuntu 12.04 gives perfect access to my institute wi-fi, in the 13.10 variants I wasn't successful in connecting. Is it a problem with 13.10?
@user2245679 I would suggest that you look at the answer to the question: No wifi connection on Ubuntu 13.10 by chili555 who is an expert at solving wifi problems. That question is also about a Lenovo laptop.

Q: How did a <3k user vote to close a question?

minerz029From this LQP review item: but the user 'Olli' has only 2,804 rep (at time of writing), how did he 'Close' it?

@AskUbuntuMeta Because "Close" in LQP doesn't mean "Close".
Oli
Oli
@FEichinger No, in this case it was because somebody flagged it as a duplicate (which is different from voting to close as a duplicate)
@Oli Yes, because in LQP "Close" doesn't necessarily actually mean Close.
Oli
Oli
@FEichinger That's immaterial. The first flag wasn't from review.
Meh, it might be relevant here. I'd know for certain if trying to compare the timeline and flag history wasn't like watching Memento.
11:44
When a question ends up in /review/low-quality-posts, any reviewer can vote to close, or if they don't have any votes, flag to close. Both of these actions are considered "Close" by the system. Unlike /review/close-votes, where "Close" actually means Close, because only people with close votes can review them - and cast a close vote when doing so.
How the post got into /review/low-quality-posts in the first place is a different matter.

@Takkat when i try to run backtrack on virtualbox it says "Failed to open the optical disk file /media/avinash/C68C57908C5779BF/softwares/os/BT5R3-GNOME-32.iso.
Could not get the storage format of the medium '/media/avinash/C68C57908C5779BF/softwares/os/BT5R3-GNOME-32.iso' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED)."
@AvinashRaj your problem is simple... backtrack is 6 years old....
@AvinashRaj is the .iso o.k.? I mean did you check MD5?
use kali
@Braiam when i try to run kali it shows some error i will post it soon
12:13
VBox can be so picky at times.
@Takkat i already used that iso file to install backtrack on my hdd
Unlikely but they may use a bootloader not supported from the virtualbox BIOS.
@AvinashRaj what was your vbox setting in the OS section?
mmm... anyone sees any problem? askubuntu.com/a/410233/169736
@Braiam yes
12:18
@Takkat in general->basic->Name=Backtrack Type =linux version = ubuntu
@Braiam BTRFS is an acronym and should be capitalised in all instances
@AvinashRaj try with simply "Linux" or "Other"... may need some playing around.
Oli

@Braiam Only that the line-spacing in <li> elements is rubbish on the site.
@Oli I blame the quote thingy

Santosa SandyI don't know why of maybe I am not rigorous enough in reading the page, but I can't edit the Ubuntu Wiki Official Documentation. I had login using UbuntuOne Account and Launchpad Account but still I can't edit the page. Let us take an example on this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mpic...

@AvinashRaj no idea then... one of the many distros I never tried to install in VBox :/
@Takkat we have to install backtrack or kali on vbox to turn on over host wireless card into mon mode?
it doesn't work on live ah?
12:36
so sorry, but wireless cards are one of the gadgets I always tried to keep my hands off too...
Nothing beats cables unless they are not broken.
@Takkat after i installed kali on vbox it shows i.imgur.com/Dnj4jsD.png
@AvinashRaj very constructive error message... I bet you are the administrator to ask now ;)
Sometimes several reboots convince virtualbox to get the timing right...
No idea how to go to a command line in Kali - there you may see what went wrong in the log files.
1
Q: Can the line-height in <li>s be a bit taller?

OliI was joking with somebody earlier about the line-spacing in their post. There's nothing wrong with the content, it's just hard to read. This is very easy to reproduce; just compare: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit. Dolores autem nemo iste quos esse obcaecati voluptat...

how to reboot vbox.you mean closing and reopening
Open a TTY to reboot or sudo shutdown -r now - if that does not work then yeah - just "poweroff", keep fingers crossed, and reboot (provided there are no important data in the VM)
12:51
@AvinashRaj click the X >:-)
it will ask to save state or shutdown
save,send,power off
power off...
@Braiam then restart it ah
it's like unplugging from mains... potentially harmful to the filesystem (of the virtual disk only)
it shows the grub on startup and displays several log texts and atlast it displays like that
12:58
may be some missing driver or anything else... try to disable all fancy stuff from the VM settings, try again, then enable them step by step again.

I DEMAND THINGS TO FLAG
Sssh. Don't wake up our spammer
since I only currently have ~20 flags max at the moment, you guys don't mind if I find obsolete comments and flag them for deletion, do you?
If you do more than 5, I would be furious.
Not actually sure if you're serious
I would prefer a very specific answer on this, I've caused/been in a lot of trouble for raising 100 flags a day on Arqade recently
Yeah, don't flood the queue with comment flags. It's already quite brimming.
14:27
ok
if it's already brimming, maybe you could go do some flags :D
(that was a joke)
I'll knock it down to single digits
I'm not all that bothered, it's just easier for me to find obsolete comments than NAA without access to the 10k tools
but I know comments are deemed the worthless activity
There are still tons of NAA out there.
There should be a query on Data.SE somewhere.

hey guys, I was updating a server via the command line last night.
now i am off site, and I am not sure where the update is in progress.
I see a root user, so I am guessing the update is still in progress...
probably its asking if i want to upgrade apache or something
how can I login to the session where that process is running?
my website is down...
apache service restart. configtest fails?
maybe i should reboot?
Hi @jrg
Hi guys
I have a bit of an issue...
My system is using VESA!
And I am on open source drivers.
I can't seem to find any indication of the cause :(
first thing firsts, dmesg and Xorg.0.log
and maybe sudo lspci -nnk | grep -A 5 VGA
kk 1 sec
↑ Xorg.0.log
BTW I'm on 14.04
O.O dpkg -l "*xorg*" | grep ii?
16:22
↑ sudo lspci -nnk | grep -A 5 VGA
↑ dpkg -l "xorg" | grep ii
I see a potential problem here [ 38.477] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
@RolandiXor dmesg?
I looked that up, but turning off modesetting didn't help
pasting that shortly
↑ dmesg
do you have any xorg.conf file?
kernel 3.13? what version of ubuntu are you running?
I had forced the system to shut down last night after I went to hibernate and then realized that it would need to reboot instead, but since then I've rebooted about 3 or four times.
@Braiam nope.
@fossfreedom 14.04
16:30
there was a bunch of xorg stuff last night
maybe a buggette or two?
think a new kernel update as well - have you tried booting with an earlier kernel?
@fossfreedom I don't have an earlier kernel on the system :(
@RolandiXor modprobe radeon doesn't do anything? (your card has no kernel module to speak of)
It just so happens I removed the earlier kernel last night
@Braiam I just loaded it
let me try restarting lightdm
brb
@karthick87 why u not here for several months?
reads tomorrow news: someone died due a tragic incident when his system blow up, due loading some module for the graphic card
3
16:37
went honk kong reg a project @AvinashRaj
This is insane
I loaded the radeon driver, but it made no difference
I forgot to mention,
When I try to boot this kernel normally, it won't do anything unless modesetting is disabled
I had to boot using recovery mode
or boot with modesetting disabled
I presume sudo lspci -nnk | grep -A 5 VGA now returns Kernel driver in use: radeon
and this is what I get from glxinfo: server glx vendor string: SGI

Nope
Any ideas?
I think I should do a disk check...
I am at a loss for ideas
@Braiam ?
bbl - gonna do a disk check
mm... still
what did the dmesg return?
16:54
It's all the same... no dice
I think I may need to find an older kernel
It was working until I upgraded my kernel and X
A bit of a piss off though... how long must I wait till they update the repos again?
tail -n 40 /var/log/dpkg.log?
The repos should be updated with everything required for a particular package at the same time not just with random packages at differing points
if I'm not mistaken they target debian testing...
@Braiam no file
@Braiam yes, but that isn't what I mean
I mean, if for example, upgrading X will break the kernel, don't put the damned thing in the repos
until the kernel is ready
are you aware that 14.04 is alpha/beta?
16:57
Who is to say that people will not be upgrading their system at the time someone uploads a package that will break other things
@Braiam YES
I am dealing with a principle
Isn't that obvious?
did you dist-upgrade? That usually causes weird things
@jokerdino no
I used Synaptic
and I don't have proposed enabled IIRC
