Q: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS PulseAudio Equalizer [SOLVED]

user231295I've got a small problem here! I am using PulseAudio-Equalizer (sudo apt-get install pulseaudio-equalizer) since a while and now i upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS from 13.10. But The PulseAudio Equalizer is not starting! It does not even show up in Dash! It did show up yesterday but now its gone! I ...

crap, totally missed the version number
Sorry, I voted to keep open accidentally. :-/
@Braim, re. gtk2 and gtk3. Here's a blog: igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/…
and this is why I prefer to close as unclear instead of dupe askubuntu.com/review/reopen/204569
@vasa1 who are you trying to ping?
@Braiam, you! Sorry about that.
use <tab> for godness sake! @vasa1
btw, cc @Lucio @karel @Seth ^ check out that in the reopen queue
sorry to ping only you guys, but I think is important
@JorgeCastro I don't see reopen votes..?
no, it's still open
I voted to "keep it open"
02:48
oh don't worry, it was closed ;)
I gave it the final vote after Jorge said he voted wrong.

AARRRRGGGGG!!!! I could have gotten at least have half of the secret hats...BOTHER!

03:17
@Braiam The tutorial that the OP used in his question is more than a year old. The tutorial describes its method as "an unofficial solution", "a dirty hack" and "performance may be spotty depending on your hardware". The question still doesn't appear to offer much beyond what is already available in its duplicate question besides speculative and opinion-based information.
@karel exactly why you closed is as duplicated? it's the same problem? what elements made you think so? That is what I'm critiquizing. Badly asked duplicates don't help anybody and depriments the quality of the site. Also, I don't see any "tutorial" that OP used, I just read "didn't work" without further explanations nor relevant information
@Braiam He gave the link to the tutorial that he used in a comment below the question. The link is: howtogeek.com/130372/…
@karel why that wasn't added to the question? and it still don't explain how it is a exact duplicated
that is how i watch netflix on my ubuntu desktop... It is that or pipe-light (that didn't seem to work on my computer)
if it dosn't work, maybe he said no to installing the wine stuff... or his hardware isn't good enough
03:37
@Braiam I think that the idea that a lot of people have about the question is that it is about how to install Netflix and it's not necessary to have to either defend or criticize some blogger's post about what worked for him. If it's that sketchy, why should we have to defend the blogger... or alternatively why should we have to criticize him for that matter? If a blogger wants to promote his suggestion, he can post something about it himself.
so at this point he needs one-on-one support to purge a ppa and try again... and help how to use pastebin to get his logs... and....this is not one-on-one support
@karel I'm not touching that. My whole point is How is question A duplicated of question B?
@karel the problem is the blog post works just fine...
@Mateo That's certainly good to know.
I'm crazy for help him to solve his problem, but first he has to help me understand what the problem is. I read the question 3 times and I get no information beyond it doesn't work
03:44
@Braiam OK, what I know so far is he asked an unclear question, left a link to an interesting tutorial in a comment and then apparently gave up, but at least we could give him some encouragement by reopening his question.
so I left some comments, maybe if he follows up
@karel just to close it as "unclear what you are asking"?
I'm just giving some pointers, but next time, if you don't see sufficient elements that qualify as duplicate due lack of information or unclear what his final goal is, either skip or close it as unclear. duplicates are reserved for exact duplicates and people that asks exactly the same question but with another wording ;)
@Braiam We migrated it
@Braiam I don't understand. You want it reopened? it's out of the queue now
the way it read first, was "how to get netflix working, do I need wine" and the that is exact duplicate
Hats are gone :(
8
03:49
@Seth I read that one as haters are gone D:
I know.. typo.
doubt we'll ever get rid of those
@Seth nah, it doesn't deserve to be reopened, what I'm asking is that bad duplicates aren't duplicates ;)
(read the transcript for details)
I think it is a duplicate.
The dupe is way more useful than "unclear"
okey, I see a problem here, you know you can add a comment telling them "hey, I don't understand your question, you might want to checkout this <link> and tell me if it works." then vote for unclear, right?
of course I know I could do that
03:53
then why not? if you don't understand the question, the correct step is vote as "unclear" instead of duplicate ;)
but I would rather add a comment saying "I don't really understand what you're trying to accomplish, but check this <link> out" and then vote for dupe.
spam attack again, think we need a blacklist for a certain word...
links here please?
@Seth It';s a long story... He used a method to install Netflix using a patched version of Wine. It didn't work for him. So he wants to know if he can install Netflix without using Wine at all. He could have also asked if it would have worked with an unpatched version of Wine, but he didn't.
meh, it's nuked by know
03:56
one down two to go
Got rid of one more
@Braiam This point about duplicates is good, but if it devolves into squabbling about one separate question for each version number of a package it turns into the Mad Hatter's tea party.
@Mateo first is nuked, 2nd someone downvoted along with the flag, third is the one I posted
all gone now.
@karel I prefer that rather than a spaghetti of posts that has little to no relation to anything, remember that duplicates redirects traffic ;)
03:59
ok, back to codeacademy, learning python the balmer method ;)
OKEY, @Seth what you think about this one? askubuntu.com/q/399791/169736
That's tricky... it'd be easier to use IMAP and Thunderbird..
but I forgot, Yahoo doesn't do IMAP.
smtp?
I get my yahoo mail in thunderbird, think that is what to use for the free accounts...
I could be used. Don't have access to a Yahoo account anymore to test though.
err... are you aware that he probably wants a "script" in the way of devilspice or expect, I'm not aware if the click action is not being sent
04:03
not pop, that costs on yahoo
@Braiam I don't understand.
@Seth the world needs another bob-jim-bob
lol
@Seth me neither
oh
04:06
I don't know what kind of answer he's expecting
can he script with "links" the text browser in termnial?
beats me... from me, he gots a unclear what you are asking, I don't have the sufficient elements to start thinking about an answer, and our previous discussion reaffirmed that trough
maybe we could grab the PHP/JS that yahoo uses to delete the messages..
probably can't.
I know there are several solutions, and if we don't narrow it down I doubt we could ever hope to answer that question
several solutions are a good thing.
04:10
@Seth not for a Q&A ;)
maybe if we knew how he was opening the browser
@Braiam yes for Q&A! That's what Stack Exchange is for!
btw, oh the irony, askubuntu.com/a/360874/169736 let me answer a dupe question with a link to the dupe and get 2 upboats
@Seth I meant a good Q&A
and at the same time, I flag it as duplicated, muahhahhaha
yes, it's fine for a good Q&A. If there are multiple ways of doing the same thing, awesome!
@Braiam well those points won't be around for long...
04:14
@Seth we need to narrow it down, he wants to use "scripts" (I'm not sure if he's dead on) and has done some advances (again, I don't know how) until the point that he only needs to make whatever he's using do a real click in whatever browser and it gets send to Y! interface
I'm afraid that your desire to help is getting in the way of the desire of quality ;) remember that SE is mostly for professionals, and as jackasses pro's we need to maintain some grade of quality ;)
Right, we could use Bash, Python, Expect, all sorts of things. Very flexible.
@Braiam So more than one answer isn't quality eh? Since when did that happen?
@Seth I'm attacking the question ;)
It would be nice to know exactly what he wants to use, but there is more than one way to skin a cat and they're all correct.
more or less what I try to say blog.stackoverflow.com/2012/08/…
that has nothing to do with how many answers or ways of getting this done there are.
04:21
you don't catch the drift. If the asker has some job done, why reinventing the wheel thinking about solutions that OP might not like? Is more useful that he instead add more details about what doesn't work and might help somebody else that came accross with the same problem
@Braiam What?!? Of course he could add more details, but what I'm saying is we have enough to answer the question. Maybe not the exact way he wants it, but that's ok if he never clarifies. It will still come out a good useful question.
There needs to be a balance. Not enough detail vs. Too much detail (too localized)
@Seth the only balance I need is quality, clarity
that I could be 100% sure that my answer will help somebody with the exact question in the future
04:37
IMO it's pretty good the way it is. It could be better with more information though and it will help someone else later too.
04:59
well @Seth, that's you opinion, I'm on the side that if I have to spend more time trying to clarify the context and getting a starting point instead of answering 2 or 3 other questions, the question itself is bad and should be DV or closed

A: How to change permission of /root/opt while it is owned by root

SaMIf your user is in the sudoers list (/etc/sudoers) you can use sudo before the command. $sudo chmod 777 /root/opt Similarly you can use chown command to change the owner of a file. But it is not recommended to grant access to anything inside /root to users other than root. Be careful!
