Q: What lenses for Unity are available?

Alaukik This question is present as a matter of historical interest. While you are encouraged to help maintain its answers, please understand that "big list" questions are not generally allowed on AskUbuntu and will be closed per the FAQ. What lenses are available for Unity? If the lens has (a) sc...

To spark discussion, why?
@jrg broken window problem, people sees that question "open" then start asking similar questions, the notice is not enough but closing them promptly as previous discussion meta.askubuntu.com/q/1511/169736
jrg
jrg
@Braiam: Hey, I appreciate it, but please stop answering dupes. We end up having to delete them when they finally get closed, so that people from google get redirected to the master dupe.
@Braiam the historical notice is after that discussion.
@jrg I do not answer dupes
jrg
jrg
it was actually the end result of the compromise between the community and SE.

Hiberation is a unclean filesystem
@jrg!
jrg
jrg
windows internals just treats them slightly different, but the rest of the world can't tell the difference.
@Seth hello!
what, am I the front page again or something? you seem surprised...
ok, lets say you are right, you think that the current answers will help him?
is not an hibernated filesystem, but improperly shutdown
jrg
jrg
there are two answers that cover that, aren't there?
@jrg Not terribly surprised.
yeah, but they have to stumble upon a bunch of unhelpful answers...
duplicated means "exact duplicated"
I had a bunch of stuff for a mod earlier.. but I can't remember what it is anymore.
if any of those answers doesn't apply to the "exact" error then we are doing it wrong
and this is the actual duplicated askubuntu.com/q/296030/169736
his problem is due hybrid boot, not due hibernating
is a formality but is the correct error

Second part of the first answer
Solution: Windows 8
deals with fast startup, which is what he's experiencing, isn't it?
We should dupe this too: askubuntu.com/questions/383896/…
jrg
jrg
is it in /review right now?
it wasn't in the original answer and still, we are allowed to recicle our answers. If an answer works for several problems we can adapt our solution to tackle the specific reason
@jrg no, but that shouldn't matter. Review is flooded.

not a dupe IMO
jrg
jrg
02:37
@Seth uh, i've been busy.

grub is not the problem but idiot EFI
@Braiam We should merge it then.
@Seth no...
the duplicated target is wrong, and that method doesn't apply to people that screwed their grub

hah. UEFI is always the problem
@jrg Oh I see. Awesome. That is exactly what we need.
02:39
I need some UEFI stuff to do couple of canonical answers...
jrg
jrg
@Seth I have very few scruples about running through a few dozen close votes in the period of an hour or two
@Braiam Well if that's the case maybe you could.. spruce it up some? It isn't in a good condition right now, especially if we need it to be a canonical question of sorts.

once you realize how easy it is to make a mistake, it's a heckuva lot easier to just do it. :P
i'm concentrating on dupes
if you could go through opinion or one of the other categories and leave a breadcrumb for me, that'd be great.
@jrg Alright. Dupes always need the most work, since a lot of people skip those.
jrg
jrg
yup
i'll be in regulators if you want to bring something up
@jrg I guess that's true.. Something I should remember, mod or not. If you get it done in 30 seconds you don't even need to apologize really though.

and good point @Jeremy
@Jeremy that too
@pacificfils Well we'd have to close it anyway, since he hasn't provided enough information
go head.
@Seth I think the question is probably about how Python handles paging if someone wanted to answer it properly... or else just leave it with stusmith's answer which doesn't have anything in it about Ubuntu.
next goal: 3k rep...
@karel I dunno, we'd have to know why/what Python was running.
03:28
@pacificfils is unsalvageable through edit, which merits a LQ flag..
if i could close-vote, i would.
Jeez, who serial UV'd you @pacificfils? Sock puppet? :P

i have no idea @Jeremy
did i lose rep (again)?

@Seth Yeah, I was thinking about that too.
@pacificfils you don't "lose" rep, that rep was shaddy

okay. i have this problem, every time i shutdown my pc for 5+ min, the computer loses time.

Hey Regulators, I wanna ask You guys 1 thing, Suppose if a question has been marked duplicate and a guy already answered it, Why does Mods have to delete the answer?
Can't they just let it be there ?
overflow
too many of that answer already.
And sometimes they delete the answer, sometimes they let it be there ?
What is the policy ?
It depends.
On what . Care to explain please
yeah hang on
03:56
Sure
So if there are no answers the site automatically redirects users to the correct question since it's a duplicate that's where the answers are supposed to be.
So if the question gets lots of views your answer breaks that redirection
sometimes if your answer is very good mods will merge it in to the master question
but it depends. That's just a risk you take when you answer a duplicate question.
i lost 110 rep answering a dupe.
Ooow. That sucks
Had that happen a few times, no 110 rep though
it IS a risk. answering any question.
First, the question has moderate views, (not too many) secondly, I have seen posts here ( where upto 3 people have answered , & their answers are not deleted, ) though I answered a single question, it got marked dup and then mod went further TO DELETE MY ANSWER ! What the ! why just he could let it be there
I lost 25 reps :(
04:00
because all questions were asked at least once with ubuntu.
Thats y i am whining
i lost 110 rep ascii
:D Yeah
you get 25 rep in a good question.
1 upvote, and accepted.
pro tip: don't whine unless its above 30 rep.
04:01
:D
2
Well , its okay i guess, lets leave it
It cant be undone !
HAve to earn them back :D
its not hard.
Thanks @pacificfils Yours 110 story, made my pain less :P
np
i think @braiam can confirm that...
I don't think it's ever happened to me, but I try not to answer dupe questions.
04:08
but when you try to do nothing but help other people, regardless of dupe, it's a slap in the face.
Yes, I could see that..
Just stick around, you'll get it all eventually. This isn't a forum after all ;)
(which is why I'm actually here.. <-- not a forums guy)
same here.
forums get off-hand too easily.
A way to help is using the comment feature, directing the user to the dupe
from talking about a computer error to the latest breaking bad episode in 3 posts

do you know what is zram?
Yes
are there any disadvantages of it?
zRAM is a module of the Linux kernel, previously called "compcache". zRAM increases performance by avoiding paging on disk and instead uses a compressed block device in RAM in which paging takes place until it is necessary to use the swap space on the hard disk drive. Since using RAM is an alternative way to provide swapping on RAM instead of hard disk driver which is usually unavailiable during system booting, zram allows Linux to make more use of RAM when swapping/paging is required, especially on older computers with less RAM installed. Even though the cost of RAM hardware is relativ...

@BYEAskUbuntu Yeah, I didn't see that at the time. We don't need to catalogue spam on the site - just delete it. Flag it up as spam and the system should take care of the rest.
Deleting it ? I think I am not up top that . am I ?
@Oli ^^
@BYEAskUbuntu when enough spam flags pile up, the thing gets deleted ;)
Oli
Oli
15:21
@BYEAskUbuntu As Braiam says, there's an automated feedback trigger for spam that once it gets enough people saying it's spam (whatever their reputation) it's deleted as spam. That happens enough times to a user and they get blocked/destroyed/etc.
But even before then, it throws the flag right to the top of the pile in the moderator screen so we can deal with it ASAP if we get there quick enough.
15:38
Why is that that sometimes when I want to flag a post the only possibility shown is other (needs moderator attention)?
