Q: The quality of the duplicates is so bad that I want to cry

BraiamEarlier today, I was pointed towards a bunch of question that were duplicated one of the other. But while reviewing the stuff linked to the question I noticed that most of those questions don't have the enough elements to qualify as exact duplicate of the question they were linked to. This is rat...

Why wubi?
what about wubi?
do you use wubi?
"you only want grub to show up if you select ubuntu"
how the hell are you going to achieve that?
It worked before until I formatted a partition before my ubuntu partition...
i am confused.

Then grub was like "don't know where to boot" after I booted into ubuntu

That answer fixed it and allowed me to boot, but Im not sure where to install grub now
why do you need to install grub again?
I don't know. When I follow the instructions in that post, my grub menu shows up after the normal command, but I don't want to always type those four commands before i see grub

okay. Just wondering, why?
because that's your HDD root
Will my computer still boot into OSX, not Grub, when I haven't instigated it?
it'll boot into grub, where you can select osx vs ubuntu
17:28
I think Grub is still there, it's just that it's not automatically starting. Because when I set the path in grub rescue, I find my grub menu fine
Does that make sense? My startup just isn't finding grub
nope. makes no sense.
maybe you can change configs?
@pacificfils I'm not sure. With this answer, all we do is change the prefix and try again, and it works. So where would that prefix option be in the config? :?
sadly, i have no idea.

you need to create a BIOS Boot Partition

you don't have one then.

Well I'm assuming that in grub rescue, I'm in the partition that boots Ubuntu. Is there a way to find out what partition that is from grub rescue?
i don't know it.

ok
If you want to see my partition set up, check out this answer. I am, indeed, using /sda3 as my bios boot partition

@roland this may be interesting meta.stackoverflow.com/q/214587/213575 for your previous announcements in chat ;)

25 rep in 9 hours... o.O I'm now 94 rep away from 10k... I haven't seen +25 rep in 9 hours on me since my answer to the VPN question, before the +500 bounty on it was even awarded...
also, hi everyone
19:04
Why do we have anonymous posting? We just get a lot of SPAM, and vandalism.. this just sucks..
@Alvar 100% agree, nowadays. actually, we should see if SE can force registration
bring it up on meta
ermahgod, I keep getting rep! D:
at the rate i'm getting rep i'mma hit 10k within a week! D:
I thought it was up on meta o few weeks ago before christmas..
@Alvar and dismissed because i said the community's doing its job, but between then and now, well, my opinion has changed
@ThomasW. Alright I shall stop upvoting then.. ;)
(and that meta already has an accepted answer)
lol @Alvar
it's too much to deal with without... COFFEE
pulls out a pot of fresh-brewed coffee
19:07
coffee this late at night? O.o ;)
@ThomasW. thought so.. Have been rejecting anonymous suggested edits a lot today and almost all of them are spam or vandalism.. which spoils the point
and if a rejected edit is bad then that user will never know why... Since it's not registered so it's kinda pointless to give a comment.
@Alvar it's 14:08 here.
remember, I'm eastern US timezone
:P
@ThomasW. 20:09 ;)
CET.
@Alvar UTC+01:00 ?
Everyone is in different timezones, kinda fun actually.
@ThomasW. think so.
there's a 6 hour gap then between yo uand I :P
19:10
hehe, and my friend that's in Australia right now is like 8-9 hours ahead of me, which is kinda cool...
Hmmm. Minecraft doesn't seem to want to play nice with my Ubuntu system...bother it
@RPiAwesomeness you bought it? :D
@Alvar No, just the demo so far
@RPiAwesomeness oh...
Yeah, sad :(
19:11
demo isn't the whole story... I don't play minecraft in singleplayer, there's no real point in it..
@RPiAwesomeness multiplayer > *
I know. I've played with a friends account on his server. MUCH more fun :D
yep
My friend got it and he said I might be able to use it occasionally. (Don't tell Mojang!) :)
@Alvar I play Minecraft on Single Player Creative when I'm creating things to import into a server
19:12
well poke your parents with a stick until they let you buy it ;)
@ThomasW. haha, I only do it to design things in creative that I then build in survival so I wont waste my life building something that wont work :D
Hehe :D
Will think about it :p
@Alvar That makes sense :D
but other that that single player is kinda pointless...
@Alvar indeed. except as admin, i can be "ALL OF YOU SHALL BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRN!" and kill everyone in the server. Then create my things.
:P
@ThomasW. haha I know I'm a moderator on a firends server.. /killall is op!
@ThomasW. LOL. Evil admins from the Nether :D
19:14
ooh railways in nether is so nice..
@RPiAwesomeness Evil Admins From The End.
Or that. Both are pretty evil :P
admins that cheat sucks though...
@Alvar i turn on zeus in this one bukkit server, and every time i left click, or right click, there's a huge thunderbolt that strikes
2
i use it against asshats
@ThomasW. lols
19:15
chase them around with the thunderbolts until they die
and they're like "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111" and I'm all like...
@ThomasW. LOL xD Love it
"REPENT! REPENT FOR YOUR SINS, MORTAL!"
@ThomasW. haha we skipped that and just kick those who wont read the rules..
i prefer to laugh, because there's a nonauthed zone on my server...
@Alvar Killing people with lightning bolts is more fun xD
19:16
if you aren't registered by an admin on the server, you get suck in this 3x3 grid
haha xD
and if you try and move outside it, you get zapped back inside.
haters gonna hate.
Well, that sucketh
what kinda server is it?
19:17
and it's on this platform in the middle of the air, so everyone can see people die.
just bukkit 1.6.4?
@Alvar That's exactly right! duck dynasty quote
i've had it for eons, and haven't updated
ok
no idea the version number
having said this, i occasionally decide to be an ass... and kick people off the platform and they land on the ground and die.
19:17
We got tired of bukkit and runs just vanilla minecraft on a private server
@Alvar I've always heard that Bukkit is better...
lol that's just mean and pointless.
@Alvar you don't know me very well then. :P
@RPiAwesomeness Well bukkit is good but it's sorta cheating at the same time...
19:19
System.out.println(Integer.valueOf("127")==Integer.valueOf("127")); //true
System.out.println(Integer.valueOf("128")==Integer.valueOf("128")); //false
We have a private vanilla MC and a FTB MC. both are fun, but in very different ways...
@Braiam lol
... And Braiam nuked the conversation :P
3
/me is a chat killer >:D
@RPiAwesomeness Well bukkit isn't a version or a mod it's a program that let's you install other mods.
so it doesn't relaly tell you anything about the server. But on those servers that I've been a moderator at we used bukkit with MMO mod, so that you had skills and leveled up and stuff like that
you could use /tp and set different homes and etc...
So there was no real point in using rails to go to places. Which is kinda cheating..
Good point
but in the same time we could claim our land so that we didn't have to worry about getting stuff stolen
so it was very fun to build in...
vanilla is better on a private server because you can't claim any land and you have to trust every player on the server...
And FTB is a whole other story, it's like minecraft but with everything turned up to eleven. It's crazy and super awesome at the same time. That's why it's fun to have a vanilla and FTB at the same time, it's like day and night. :)
@ThomasW. search the site?
@Alvar i could, but my net's being unstable
(searching times out)
first question on close -> duplicate, out of votes though...

I can't either. ;)

20:20
Don't know. As I said, I can't read it. :D
I can ask the same question... just that in my case I'm the one at fault not firefox :D
@Braiam Same for me.
And maybe same for the questioner. :D
damn trolls... destroying questions, even if they are bad questions...
@Jeremy review?
20:26
@Alvar I'm not an expert so I'd like people to tell me if my answer is correct/on track.
@Jeremy Ehm does it work?
It does for me. I just want to improve it in any way I can.
if it works then it's fine, people will comment on it if they think it needs improving...

Q: Am I a slag? Please help!

SgamI'm Irish. Up until recently, I lived with my husband and two young children in a small town. However, my lifelong best friend drowned in a car accident with her young daughter and left behind a husband and young son. I felt extremely sorry for him and his son that I asked them to move in with my...

Am I a slag?
Yes, yes you are. :/ — Jeremy 1 min ago
@ThomasW. you again. you drunk today ?
@BYEAskUbuntu Nope. Energized though because I got a mention from @JorgeCastro in a blog post and have my name in an arstechnica article now

Q: Mint 16 - Boot process hangs, can start with "single" + startx

etherealMint 16 Cinnamon x86_64 fully updated (kernel 3.11.0-14-generic) Drive is encrypted as well as user's home dir I had been working for a few days with a new install of Mint 16 and have suspended/restarted without issues until today. Now the boot process hangs, but I can log in via "single" and ...

I just water and nothing more than that
my god my typing sucks
count sheep - 1 sheep ... 2 sheep ... 3 sheep ... 4 sheep - asleep yet? :)
@fossfreedom say something about frp,http,dhcp,dns
21:30
... think I'll fall asleep just thinking about them
hmm
did something bad happening to me foss?
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L Mint != Ubuntu. Tags were edited, and my edit was approved there, noob.
lack of sleep is definitely bad - think happy thoughts.
okay
I will try now
@ThomasW. lol :P
21:37
@ThomasW. - congrats on the mention in Jorge's post - impressive - making it in main. Nice.
@fossfreedom heh, thanks, arstechnica jumped the gun a little, but the fact this is spreading like fire means my name gets seen more.
@fossfreedom Hi fossf, could you undo the community wiki in askubuntu.com/a/398499/115155. I did not know that at 10 edits a post becomes CW and I just edited some extra links in one by one...
@Oli If fossf is not here, could you take a look at it?
@don.joey yeah ... but be careful next time - no need to rush answers.
@fossfreedom aah. saw you changed it. thanks. This really was not because of rush though. I spent several days researching the problem because I am confronted with it as well.
@don.joey booo! no TeX love :(
21:51
@Braiam :D I love tex a lot. But to be frank: several times I have had to convert a tex document to a word document for a publisher to accept it
@don.joey sometimes the best way to avoid the "10 hits and you are out" problem is to put a caveat at the top of the answer saying something like "this answer is provisional - I'm working & researching stuff and will complete the answer in the next few hours/days etc"
@Braiam if you have a way to directly and reliably convert docx to latex let me know. I have not found a really reliable (let alone a CL) solution
@don.joey nah, the trick is doc(x) -> tex -> pdf ;)
meh, I've found lots... but for windows :(
@fossfreedom good suggestion. thanks again for undoing the wiki
maybe I should ask in tex.se
21:55
@Braiam there is an excellent plugin for LO that does quite a good job on writer->latex
yeah, but MS being MS do not help (compatibility wise doc is better than docx)
@Braiam indeed. That is why I am looking into independent docx -> doc converters...
Does the ubuntu installer automatically install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers? Maybe if it has internet access during the install?
@falconer I don't think it will automatically install proprietary drivers
actually, the proprietary drivers are activated by default in the live session, but then get removed when installing...
22:05
Hmmm.
Then I don't really get this:
@falconer yes your right sorry here the right logs, syslog: pastebin.com/zDtuHeuK, Xorg: pastebin.com/2W8UFxcj, lightdm: pastebin.com/t0UjaVj0wasp256 1 hour ago

Q: Ubuntu 12.04 does not boot after install

wasp256I have a new Lenovo ThinkPad E540. I have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.04 after the installation I receive the 'remove all ... and press any key to restart'. No I receive the selection menu (note that I erased the entire disk and now only Ubuntu is installed!!), but after I clicked on Ubuntu ...

How did the NVIDIA driver got into the Xorg.log?
the ThinkPad use nvidias?
switchable graphics...
intel+nvidia
I bet that has "something" to do with the problem
Surely.
I agree.
22:10
But I don't understand why would the installer install that NVIDIA driver, normally it shouldn't, to not get into such problems.
Just stick to the intel card, and if the user is experienced, he will try to install the NVIDIA
I would try removing the nvidia drivers.
I answered a similar question just a bit ago
I told him just to switch off the whole nvidia card in bios.
the thinkpads allow that
1
A: Ubuntu blank screen after login

SethAfter examining your Xorg.0.log, it appears that Xorg is attempting to load the glx module with the nvidia drivers, and since you don't have an Nvidia card it's failing to load. Removing the Nvidia packages should solve your issue: sudo apt-get purge nvidia-common nvidia-settings-319-updates ...

Not the exact same problem, but it might give you some pointers.
anyone has close votes? askubuntu.com/q/369480/169736
@falconer Oh that should help
@Braiam Why do you think that is a duplicate?
22:14
he upgraded windows, overwrote the MBR, grub doesn't appear, needs to repair the grub ;)
that makes it a duplicate of this?

Q: Will upgrading Windows 8 to 8.1 affect Ubuntu?

Juan SalazarIt's a rather simple question (I hope). I currently have Windows 8 and I am dual booting it with Ubuntu 13.04. If I were to install the latest update for Windows 8, that being 8.1, will it affect Ubuntu or will there be any conflicts between the two?

@Seth that was the one I linked ;)
hmm well ok
same as this guy, that is linked to that question too askubuntu.com/q/368141/169736

Q: Is boot-repair becoming our jQuery?

BraiamFor those that do not know the jQuery meme, please read it or you will not be able to know what I'm going to talk about. Well, as all of you know, boot-repair do wonders in modern days helping users fixing their boot, but I've seen that several people for several questions just say "try boot-rep...

@ThomasW. you got the shout out... yay you
@hbdgaf o/
@hbdgaf yes, Robie Basak needs some credit there though :/
he actually pushed the MIR into play
I saw the headline as Nginx and MIR being an added note. A name-drop probably would have been nice though.
Looking at the queue of First Posts you can note that Ubuntu has been a sweet gift this holidays :)
22:42
My sweet gift came from Valve... but it runs on Linux ;)
@hbdgaf Yeah, I was mentioned in the arstechnica article though
my name is there
and in Jorge's post
@ThomasW. lucky you nginx is FHS compliant (hates when packages ain't)
hehe
@Braiam more lucky I got my name on an article AND a link to my LP in Jorge's post.
that's not a bad thing :)
i have an @ mention on discourse too
@Braiam I don't mean to sound rough, but until you have 20 something flags to deal with in 5 minutes of your free time, don't make the assumption that this is what we want.

http://meta.stackoverflow.com/a/214592

A: Do not recommend the “not an answer” flag for conversion to a comment

Lightness Races in OrbitYour assertion that this "contradicts common sense" is only your opinion, and I have to re-iterate that I do not agree. I don't wish to belabour the point, but this flag is designed exactly as the user text states, and it has always served that purpose very well in my experience.

It's opinion on the part of the OP.
When you create a custom flag, we have to stop and read what you said in your custom flag, and if it is a case where we should just delete an answer or convert it to a comment, we then must take the extra steps of opening the original question and then clicking a bunch of other things...
THAT is frustrating.
@RolandiXor I'm just giving you heads up if something changes in the future, I'm not supporting either side (not a mod, can't talk)
22:51
I don't think I should need to keep reminding people that extra steps are likely to become tiring after a while.
Anyway I gtg.
@RolandiXor I'm all in that your (mods) job becomes more straightforward ;)
if that helps to handle flags schiftly, even better (from the user perspective)

@Lucio - quick shout out - any chance that you can update your spanish translation for coverart-browser? There are curently 14 new translations required for v1.0 of the plugin - I need a full translation to test out that the translation stuff is still working for the upcoming release. Thanks for any help you can give :) translations.launchpad.net/coverartbrowser/trunk/+pots/…
