00:00 - 22:0022:00 - 00:00

22:30
I sure hope I know what I am doing:
I'm cleaning the dust from a laptop.
Here's what the other side looks like:
22:44
it's a mechanical thing. taking apart and retracing your steps backwards is just a matter of course. it's nothing major to take down a laptop. you'll be fine.
:)
I'm going to count the screws I removed...
45.
"don't touch that. it's a grid that tells me from which sectors i removed which screws and in what order." -- tombraider
Hey - I've got them laid out in the arrangement that they were in when I removed them.
Nothing wrong with that - although most of them are the same size anyway (I think).
yes, but every time you take a new layer, you start another grid so you don't miss any.
so, it's like an array of arrays
Not exactly. I only have two grids - one for the screws on the top and one for the screws on the bottom.
Okay, maybe three - I needed an extra one for the audio panel / ExpressCard slot.
22:50
then you'll have extra screws. good luck sir. every time i remove a panel i start a new grid. never fails to deliver.
Well there weren't that many panels.
The system board was probably the biggest "single" component I removed.
I know I sometimes forget a darn screw... when I already assembled the whole thing the screw just pop out...
Well, except maybe for the display...
it's usually about three. on any given side of any given blob. so you're at most 2 x 2 x 3 deep. so it makes sense to do it my way. if you just place in sectors, you'll miss something that was attached at a particular layer and have to disassemble to reassemble. i don't like repeating work
I have an nvidia is it better to have the latest open-source or the stable, yet older proprietary?
22:57
I've got the maintenance and service manual open, so it details clearly where the screws need to go.
I basically just follow the instructions in reverse.
:) most people don't have that. just saying.
Why is there no close reason of "this is a rant"? askubuntu.com/questions/356941/…
There was one funny little quirk in the manual though.
When describing how to remove the audio panel, it said to remove the system board.
And in the instructions for removing the system board, it said to remove the audio panel.
Good old HP.
And this is why I don't use manuals. "Just do it" -- Nike
SE should definitely implement drag throw for people with touchscreens in chat.

Have you ever laughed because an ad failed to buffer properly on youtube? I know I have.
23:12
actually you get to see the YT ads?
jrg
jrg
Can anyone get to staging.rubycasts.net ?
it hung the video spooling, so i giggled a little when i heard silence and checked it out. ad delivery fail.
@jrg it hits with a 999 pricetag for me
there's a rubysploitable for owasp top ten now...in related news
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf thank you verymuch.
means it propagated.
DNS is weird.
I'm using OpenDNS.... and can see it
jrg
jrg
i can't, same provider.
nslookup returns blank.
23:15
try explaining to your boss that the migration went perfectly, but you have to wait for dns to sync or keep both ips live for zero down time. they look at you like you just ate a kitten until they read a little and get passed the mgmt mindset
Anyone running Saucy and Unity?
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf lol i'm the boss on this one.
heh
@Seth i'm running saucy with xfce
jrg
jrg
this is my project, and it's not due until november 1st, I just got tired of typing the IP address for the staging server.
@jrg Works here..
jrg
jrg
23:16
Yay
@hbdgaf This is a Unity problem unfortunately.
@jrg your system cached the ip...
 nslookup staging.rubycasts.net
Server:		127.0.1.1
Address:	127.0.1.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:	staging.rubycasts.net
Address: 192.237.166.196
jrg
jrg
@Braiam I specifically don't have any caching set up, for that reason.
@Seth sorry. i migrated to something else for reasons of my own.
@hbdgaf No issue ;)
jrg
jrg
23:18
@Seth i can get my vm running, whats up?
@jrg Every time I resume from suspend the Alt+F2 dialog it up, though I never use Alt+F2
jrg
jrg
Oh, i can't do suspend in the VM, it breaks things so badly.
:\
(Comes with too many NICs per vm.)
I think there's a dupe somewhere about that
Anyone wanna finish this? askubuntu.com/questions/356941/…

jrg
jrg
23:21
i'm a mod, remember? ;P
@Seth already cast
@jrg I didn't forget ;P
jrg
jrg
You just didn't ask.
Didn't ask what?
jrg
jrg
23:22
me specifically. ;P
I didn't ask you...?
@Seth your message could have read "@jrg this needs some napalm and a migration to meta"
@hbdgaf I see...
jrg
jrg
Yes, with emphasis on the meta.
shrug.
jrg
jrg
23:24
anyway, i'm just giving you a hard time. ;P
I wish we could open the migration paths to U&L though..
@jrg I know, I was just returning the favour :P
@Seth if we did they would hate us for the trash that came through.
jrg
jrg
We don't migrate a lot of stuff actually...
@hbdgaf We don't migrate trash.
jrg
jrg
even I've only migrated 2-3 things that weren't meta <> main
23:26
@jrg That's funny 'cause I've advocated the migration of about that many and you've been here longer... :S
i meant that if you open the stargate, trash goes through. if you have to have keys to the kingdom stuff just closes instead
well, they can send stuff anyways...
jrg
jrg
@Seth i've also been on hiatus for ~4 months.
@hbdgaf I guess that's true... Maybe it should be a special privilege.

Q: Why don't you mention the word Linux anymore?

tutan_kbronI mean your slogan was "Linux for human beings" but I can't see it in your SO description anymore, why?

@jrg: Yo.
@Seth Seems like the reasoning for course of action from this administration is "what would be the worst idea? yeah, let's do that..." -- Wait, shouldn't they close all roads since most states take federal subsidies for road maintenance? But then who would pay the taxes that pay government salaries? Just food for thought. -- I'm going to regret saying that when they do it.
jrg
jrg
@NathanOsman sup?
Did you see my pictures?
jrg
jrg
23:34
@hbdgaf I think we should just fire them all.
I've completely disassembled a laptop.
jrg
jrg
@NathanOsman about... the laptop?
yeah, in passing
Yup.
Now I have to put it back together.
No extra screws?
I don't know yet.
Still putting the panels together.
jrg
jrg
23:36
which laptop is it?
Oh no. Tell me when you're actually done... I wanted to give you:
23:47
@jrg It's an HP DV6757 CA.
And thankfully I was able to get my hands on the original service manual.
It details the steps for replacing each component.
@hbdgaf Well I'm not going to give an opinion here.. I just thought that was really funny.
