anyone a git guru?
hey dudes
just revisiting an issue i keep asking about
1
A: Multiple Video Card / Monitor Setup -- Need help getting it working.

avilellaHybrid graphics has improved a bit lately. The latest Catalyst drivers provide a login/logout switch. Have a look at these websites: https://launchpad.net/~hybrid-graphics-linux http://linux-hybrid-graphics.blogspot.com

@Cas not a guru but whats up

Q: Multiple Video Card / Monitor Setup -- Need help getting it working.

Dmitriy LikhtenSo I currently have a dual-ati video card setup on my laptop. A low-power one and a high power one. In windows 7 the drivers switch video cards when on external vs internal power. Also one of the video cards contains an HDMI output which I would like to use as it lets me plug in my monitor. So ...

well i pulled a commit from origin and now it tells me that i am ahead by 1 commit
its very weird
that means you have a local checkin
that is not part of origin
you can git push that
:P
Cas
Cas
i'm afraid that not it
most interesting
Cas
Cas
00:13
i just pulled another commit that was added to origin and now im 2 commits ahead
o oooo
your remote is missconfigured
its checking against a diff remote
than "origin"
Cas
Cas
how?
use gem install grb as grb is a nice simplification of git branching and can fix these missconfigs
How to connect to a CISCO VPN through UFW http://bit.ly/lN02JZ #networking
running grb on root of repo might actually fix ur issue
Cas
Cas
00:15
ok i dont have root access but i will ask, cheers for help :)
repo root
the dir with .git
@Cas
and grb is just a gem
you can install it as a local gem
so if u have ruby installed
Cas
Cas
ok i c
grb <any option> --explain tells you what it does so you have an idea what goes on
git push origin master:refs/heads/master
git fetch origin
git config branch.master.remote origin
git config branch.master.merge refs/heads/master
git checkout master
check what the branch.<branch>.remote is set to
it might not be origin
Cas
Cas
wow that did fix it :D
@DmitriyLikhten what a magically program
yea
its made to make branching easier
since git branching is not so simple
hehe
--explain is doubly awesome
Cas
Cas
00:22
quite a gem ;)
:)
do you have any idea about aticonfig and friends?
Cas
Cas
sorry only know nvidia
ugh, story of my life
o well theres a bounty out now
Hello dear friends! (My first visit after a long time.)
01:18
How is git branching difficult?
01:34
@marenostrum Welcome back!
@GeorgeEdison Thanks. :)
01:54
Is it just me or is Page Preview broken in LibreOffice Writer?
Every time I click it, the application crashes.
02:29
@GeorgeEdison it works for me
03:03
@Alaukik Well it doesn't for me :P

I found a major glitch with Unity.
This beats the other one by a landslide too!
@Marco: Really hate to bother you but this is a serious problem.
This is ugly.
@GeorgeEdison and what is this major glitch?
@ajmitch: The new global menus can still be used when a modal dialog is displayed.
doesn't surprise me, since the menus are in a separate process
That's a serious glitch!
I can freeze up Code::Blocks...
yeah probably
06:39
....I can mess up almost any program.
filed a bug?
I'm trying to...
I'm not sure which package to file it in.
well, I'm seeing some bugs already filed about this
Hi! In Ubuntu 10.10, with Unity, in an application with a modal window, Unity not blocks the access to Global Menu. Steps: - Open an application with a modal window (by example: gufw). - Go to menu/Edit/Preferences. - Preferences window is a modal window (not access to the application menu). - Access in the Global Menu to the Gufw menu: Bug! You can access to it! You can see the screenshot. Best regards.

Ah, there we go.
high priority but filed 6+ months ago
Good morning all
Binary package hint: unity If I open (for example) Synaptic non-maximized and tell it to reload or apply updates, an update window appears for potentially a considerable length of time. With Synaptic non-maximized, it is possible to minimize both windows by clicking on the minimize icon in the main Synaptic window. However, with Synaptic maximized, the minimize/close window buttons disappear from the global menu when the child window is opened. Because it is a modal popup window, you cannot switch the focus back to Synaptic. This means you can no longer minimize Synaptic, which is a regression. A workaround would be to allow the application to be minimized from the unity launcher, eg by making it (like every other launcher/dockbar) minimize a focused application when you click on its icon (eg as requested in bug #733349), or by adding a right-click menu option to minimize the application. @ajmitch I clicked that it affected me.
is also sort of relevant
06:41
morning :-)
hi @Takkat
& @StefanoPalazzo :)
@StefanoPalazzo We're finding lots of bugs.
@ajmitch: I also filed this one yesterday...
Kind of similar... it affects my application as well.
@GeorgeEdison not to sound hasty, but do do any of them affect any of my apps?
@StefanoPalazzo You mean the lens? No, I doubt it.
What are your other apps?
Oh I see now
06:45
On the positive side:
my word, looks like things are quite broken :O
by the way @GeorgeEdison, are you going to change the layout of js studio, or is the current one final?
@StefanoPalazzo Well... some parts of it are kind of final.
I'd love it if the text view didn't have any border, and the sidebar would just sort of slide in if you want it to
I think the project tree will stay on the left.
@StefanoPalazzo Hmm... well you can change the size by dragging it.
Oh that sounds perfect, I'm just worried about the border around the main text area
it somehow looks weird
06:47
Oh, I'll show you another screenshot then.
@StefanoPalazzo: ------^
I wrote the syntax highlighter in a few short hours :)
Handles multiline comments now and escape characters in strings.
oh that is nice
I tried to implement a highlighter for python-strings a few weeks ago, but I quickly got very frustrated indeed
Qt has a class QSyntaxHighlighter that you derive from.
My problems mainly had to do with triple quoted strings
It does the updating code for you... all you have to do is instruct it how to highlight the given line that it provides.
In the end I had a 300char. regular expression that didn't quite cover all the corner cases (:
06:52
@StefanoPalazzo What were you trying to do?
Just highlight it all the same color?
oh just playing around
@GeorgeEdison I also tried to highlight things like escapes and unicode literals (\x5b) inside strings
So it would highlight the escape characters a different color?
I see.
I didn't even try RegEx in my case.
I quickly wrote up a small parser.
(My past experience with compiler design came in handy!)
It makes it much easier to handle corner cases.
Well that's what I did in my next project, but at least I had a chance to learn regular expression, which I never bothered to do before
All this reminds me very much of my first ever software project (:
06:57
That's always fun to think about.
What was your first project?

I wonder why this article hasn't been deleted, it totally violates npov :P
I created a Wikipedia article for my first project too :)
But I still, from time to time, get email from teachers trying to get the thing to work on their 80s Novell NetWare systems lol
But it did get deleted... after 5 months.
@GeorgeEdison what was that?
Argh I'm having this stupid invisible windows bug
it drives me up the wall
07:01
@StefanoPalazzo I get that all of the time.
there isn't any fix is there?
Not yet.
The app I created (PowerPad) was also my introduction to Python.
Although the application was written in C++ (using wxWidgets), it embeds the Python interpreter...
oh 'course I know about PowerPad
07:02
Yup. Anyone can extend it by writing a Python script.
It's also among the few apps out there that use Python 3 :)
It's got a sample script down the page.
very cool stuff
good morning
I didn't realise you were that new to software, looks like you started around two years ago?
The neat part is that there is an API function provided that speaks the text provided in a parameter out loud.
morning @htorque :-)
07:05
@StefanoPalazzo Well...
I've been programming for about 7-8 years.
But I never released anything until about 2 years ago.
oh I see :-)
I created a couple of DirectX games earlier.
They were fun but never got too far.
When I actually first started programming, I used Microsoft's QBasic :)
Then started web development with...
...Netscape Navigator 3!
I just had a little rummage through my very, very old backups
Me too the other day :)
07:09
Whoah...
this must've been one of my first python programs (counting only the ones that did something)
I was quite into automata theory for a while
heh, I guess you could say I was borded (:
I'd show you mine... but they don't work well in Wine.. or even recent versions of Windows.
They were designed on Windows 98 :P

@OctavianDamiean Takkat sends them to me now :(
How do I use bold font in terminal? (echo/cat) http://bit.ly/ktQYnj #terminal
here we go again. stupid Takkat >:D BBL
09:28
:d
@Rinzwind I am igoring them but now they grow (came back form you?)
This day is going to be the worst.
mine's getting worse every second :X
I now have 57 open items (it was 0 when 2days ago and y-day I was elsewhere)
got it down from 120 already :D
@Rinzwind we two here have >>700 items today :'(
(normal is <500)
when I started here our 'helpdesk' was 2 men job 5 days a week and we'd still have stuff going over to the next week.
I suggested some alterations (more a complete rewrite...) of several key compontents and after that we went to a 20 calls a week (that took me like an hour every week so I also started coding)
and we are now going for a 3rd complete rewrite (from BASIC to JS+mysql backend) and it's getting crazy cuz now my boss depends on me for coding ... and I have to do the helpdesk
sound like mega-absorbers

very!

hello Greg :D
What 'pattern' does rsync match to, exactly? Is it a regular expression?
@Rinzwind what should I say? I'm quite sorry for you. :p
09:51
LOL
@Greg match what? files it needs to synch? that's just the normal wildcards iirc
@Rinzwind when I use --exclude and --include, it matches a "PATTERN"
ah
that one :D
IIRC it is --exlude "+R {regex}" but you might want to wait for someone that uses it alot more ;)
16 featured questions! should we have a limit? like 5-10 at most?
found someone that said rsync --exclude='.*' works where .* is a regex

Ahhhhh NetBeans has died again
netbeans?!
what kinda of work do you do?
I use NetBeans for PHP development
13:03
ah ok
oh god how do I kill its process?
um you'd want to kill the java enviroment
13:19
Any JS people around that I can bother?
@MarcoCeppi perchance?
has a JS question now
moves to the Ask Ubuntu Webdeving room
13:34
hi
Oh hey @TheX. :)
@JamesGifford hows it going?
@StefanoPalazzo I'm a JS person
@TheX Going ok. You?
@Greg you are? Cool :-)
13:36
@JamesGifford dandy, but I rather be at home. and not at work....
@Greg pretty sure I've already solved my problem though
or maybe not
@Greg how do I prevent a regexp from matching overlapping things?
@StefanoPalazzo define overlapping things?
/[*_](.*)[*_]/ ← this is my expression, and in the string "*hello* bla *world*", it matches "*hello*", "* bla *", and "*world*", but I only want the first and last ones
(just like I get in python)
@JamesGifford if I could figure out how to use Fedora I would be great
13:40
@TheX It's like GNOME, but not. ;)
You using the new Fedora release?
@JamesGifford yeah
@TheX That officially sucks.
Gotta say that I kinda like how GNOME3/GNOME-shell let you write extensions in javascript though. . .
@JamesGifford it isn't that bad, it is better then Unity
@TheX GASP BLASPHEMY!
I don't care, crucify me :P
13:42
lol. :P
Honestly though... as soon as I can install gnome 3 on Ubuntu, without breaking my computer I will go back to Ubuntu..
@StefanoPalazzo hmmm, I think this is more of a regex rather than JS ... Not good with regex :S
@Greg sorry I think I got that wrong. Here I am replacing [*_] before and after the first group with the letter x:
*hello* bla *world*
xhello* bla *worldx
whis is weird
@Greg No worries, I'll bother you with something javascripty later on I'm sure ;-)
13:58
@StefanoPalazzo cool I'll look forward to it.
This is the solution by the way
m = m.replace(/[*_](.*?)[*_]/g, "<i>$1</i>");
The .*? does the trick

@JamesGifford You're a git right?
14:14
@Greg lol yup
@JamesGifford I've added a few files and made some changes to my master, and I want these changes replicated across all my branches, new and existing. Is this a simple merge?
I've only started using branches lately, get confused easily!
@Greg Um, without trying it, I don't know. I'd say yes
Branches period can get confuzzling.
well I made my backup, so I'll just have to try it out..... OMG ITS ON FIRE!

14:18
oh hey @Rinzwind. how's things?
you still dare to ask?
Yes, yes I do. :P
ok, who was the idiot who removed vi(m) and replaced it with emacs?!
(on this system i'm using)
I was away from the office y-day (someone else "did" the helpdesk).
so this morning I had 200 mails with problems and all kinda ppl at my desk :(
just now I finished those to end up with currently 2 open problems and I've had it >:D
ouch . . .
see!

@Rinzwind PDF was cracked. . . no surprise there.
ā€œIā€™m hoping everyone agrees with me and the idea will be implemented.ā€ New to open source software development, are you then?

14:42
Hi guys! To the 11.04 users, have you been having "trouble" with your OS?
@Trufa What kind of "Trouble"?
I'm finding this version quite buggy.
For some strange reason, it just logs me out
AH.
let me pull that bug report up
out of nowhere, in no specific software
@JamesGifford ohh not just me, I like not being special
Dangit.
can't find it. arghsafksdfaklsjdlfa.
14:43
@JamesGifford it's incredibly annoying
@Trufa what video card do you use? Intel?
I dare to claim from all the AU questions I've seen it's your videocard that's the problem
and most of these have Intel
it's fixed by upgrading your kernel
sudo apt-get upgrade???
14:46
nope.
gotta add a new ppa.
sorry for my ignorance
@Trufa It's ok.
Took me forever to figure it out.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
this?
jups
14:49
then you'll want to do

`sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade`
then you'll want to reboot
@JamesGifford cool!!
I'm downloading!!
will reboot as soon as it's finished
well rebooting before it finishes will not stop your system from crashing >:D
@Rinzwind hehe what you gonna do? right.
sometimes you just have to wait >:D
Ohh man the internet connection sucks
@JamesGifford and @Rinzwind thanks for you king help :)
(and kind too)
14:55
@Trufa You're welcome.
Let me know if it works. :)
although come to think of it, if it doesn't work, you won't be able to tell me. . . :O
@JamesGifford It will be hard to know, because I can't replicate the circumstances, but I'll let you know if it doesnt
:)
@JamesGifford hehe exactly
now where's our rep >:-D
