So I don't have a detailed screenshot
ok , so?
jrg
jrg
So from top to bottom
1. select the 15GB ext4 partition
2. click "change"
do you have a skype?
if you do
shit, i can't show you the screen anyway
jrg
jrg
3. change the "mountpoint" to "/"
Yeah, sorry. I'm not a skype person. :(
4. click 'save"
by mounting point you mean : DEVICE FOR BOOT LOADER INSTALLATION?
SORRY
yes, i know what you mean by mounting point
i will do it
jrg
jrg
16:19
No - in the section in the middle of the screen.
yes
but it will take like 10 minutes right?
jrg
jrg
let me know when you've changed the mountpoint.
until the mounting point is changed...
jrg
jrg
no, shouldn't. not yet.
ok
i think maybe like 5 to 10 minutes...
i will write you once it is finshed
jrg
jrg
16:20
OK. if it asks you to format, let me know.
i didnt format the partition after i clicked to change tha partition
there was: DON'T USE THIS PARTITION
jrg
jrg
OK, so you want to select "ext4" there.
or /
but i changed it to : EXT4
jrg
jrg
i don't remember the options available under that menu.
and then there was a checkbox: format the partition
but i didn't check it
and the last one was the mounting point
i changed the mounting point to /
do you know what menu is shown when i click to change the EXT4 partition?
do you have a link to a screenshot of that menu?
jrg
jrg
16:23
one sec
this one
jrg
jrg
Ah, so you want to know what options there are for the ext4 menu?
so i chose EXT4 journaling file system
and didn't check the box to format the partition
was i suppossed to check the box to format the partition?
jrg
jrg
One moment. I'm trying to follow along with a slightly older version of ubuntu
jrg
jrg
16:26
it is 6 minutes already and it is not done yet.... maybe it is gonna be even more than 10 minutes...
jrg
jrg
So that's the dropdown for "ext4". you want to select ext4.
jrg
jrg
ok.
so what screen are you on now?
btw, i see the partitions like this:
/dev/sda
/dev/sda1 ntfs 104MB Windows7 loader
/dev/sda2 ntfs 84983MB
/dev/sda4 ntfs 147667MB
/dev/sda3 ext4 17301MB
jrg
jrg
16:30
ok. did you select a mount point for sda3?
YES
it could not be /dev/sdb ?
it could be /dev/sdb only if i had 2 physical harddisks?
jrg
jrg
/dev/sdb is probably the USB Stick that you're installing Ubuntu from.
sda for windows and sdb for linux?
no, i don't see any sdb !!!
it's just what i see on screenshots on the internet
so maybe people have windows on 1st physical harddisk
and linux on the 2nd physical harddisk
sda for windows
sdb for linux
jrg
jrg
Ok, so typically, sdB is the USB stick that is used to install ubuntu. in your case, you don't see that, because in the latest version, they started hiding the installation media.
btw, it is 13 minutes and it is not done yet. i told you it was gonna take a long time!!!
jrg
jrg
16:33
Which step is it on?
is there a message on the bottom section of the screen?
still not changed sda3
no message
probably still changing the mounting point of sda3
or maybe it got stuck and will stay like this forever
jrg
jrg
is the "Install now" button grayed out?
for some reason
yes it is grayed out
jrg
jrg
click the ext4 partition again, and click "change"
when i do, nothing happens
jrg
jrg
16:35
well, i guess it got frozen. :\
i only see that cirle rolling
i also think so
can i do it in gparted???
jrg
jrg
ok, i'm going to set a timer for 5 minutes. if it hasn't done something by then, there's an issue.
maybe it is gonna work there
jrg
jrg
Have you used gparted before?
yes
i used gparted to create the partition sda4 and sda3
jrg
jrg
16:36
Then I recommend you do a force restart and "start over", so to speak.
i shrinked sda2 to 80 GB , got a free space... and then created those 2 partitions
jrg
jrg
and then you can try this tool again, or try gparted.
but then
when i use gparted
can i change the mounting point to / ?
jrg
jrg
not inside gparted
but you can inside the installer.
ok
so what should i do?
jrg
jrg
16:38
Click the cog wheel, select "restart"
maybe i should format sda3
right?
jrg
jrg
can't do that until you've restarted
when i get to point where i change the mounting point
jrg
jrg
right now the installer is frozen.
i restarted already
jrg
jrg
16:39
OK.
i am there again
the same window
so?
btw, what is install ubuntu inside windows 7 ???
jrg
jrg
Select sda3, click change, change the mountpoint to /, set the partition type to ext4, and click format. then click say.
@JANORTS that does all this automatically, with the catch that it makes it impossible to resize partitions afterwards.
i did
i see the mouseclock again
jrg
jrg
OK. Give it a little time.
jrg
jrg
16:41
Since this time we selected to reformat it as well.
ok
maybe it wont freeze now
ok
once it is done, what should i choose in the next option
Device for boot loader installation
jrg
jrg
/dev/sda
jrg
jrg
Just select "/dev/sda" as the device for bootloader installation.
the whole harddisk right?
jrg
jrg
16:43
yes
i see /dev/sda ATA st9250410AS (250.1 GB)
jrg
jrg
That's the one.
OK
but the wheel is still rolling
jrg
jrg
try and click "Install Now" anyway.
it is grey.. when i do, nothing happens
jrg
jrg
16:45
argh, so it froze again. :(
i can't change the mounting point in gparted?
right?
jrg
jrg
sadly not.
shit
i fuck the whole ubuntu
so it means i can't install ubuntu?
i would have to have a second physical harddisk?
maybe if i delete the partition in gparted and leave a free space of 15 GB
i will be able to create a EXT4 partition in ubuntu install
and install ubuntu on that partition
are you still here?
gone?
it seems that my solution works
;-)
write please when you come back...
jrg
jrg
17:27
Sorry!
Had to leave... Didn't expect to be gone that long.
@JANORTS sorry about that!
Hope I was able to help... :-(
no
i did what i have written
and ubuntu installed in 7 minutes !!!
now
i will want to install windows 7 on the 2nd NTFS partition
jrg
jrg
Good. Sorry I wasn't able to help.
so what should i do?
maybe i can uninstall ubuntu
then install windows 7 on the 2nd partition
and then install ubuntu on the 3rd partition
and i will have GRUB as loader where i will chose between windows 7 #1, windows 7 #2 and ubuntu
that's the fastest method right?
right?
windows has a stupid loader right?
so, how will i get rid of ubuntu and GRUB ?
;-)
and get to the state where i was 1 hour ago... no ubuntu or grub installed...
1 empty ntfs and 1 empty ext4 partition
and no grub
?
jrg
jrg
uh, you can't really.
So if you want to install windows 7
Go ahead and do that.
Then redo the Ubuntu. You don't need to wipe the partition or anything on this go around.
i can get back
and delete the partition where ubuntu is now
and get rid of grub
right?
i did it but that was several years ago
i dont remember how to do it anymore
here it is:

Q: How to remove Ubuntu and put Windows back on?

Josev KingI have absolutely no experience with Linux, and I desperately need to get my laptop back up and running again with Windows. How do I remove Ubuntu?

^^ the second link is even better
jrg
jrg
17:43
Ok. I have not tried that.
So I'm unfortunately no help at all there. :-(
haha
ok
how long have u used ubuntu?
or linux?
I installed my first linux 10 years ago
jrg
jrg
I tend to use Windows, or Mac, or Ubuntu. Haven't dual booted in almost 3 years
;-)
but i dont use it that much...
jrg
jrg
I started using Linux in general about 8 years ago.
full-time about 5.
mac ???
why mac?
jrg
jrg
17:44
and then got a Mac for work and haven't done much since then. looking to get back into it.
i've been mac for 6 months. It's been a long 6 months.
you are a graphic designer?
jrg
jrg
Dev.
and sysadmin.
or programmer?
haha
maybe i will need som help today and tomorrow
;o)
with system integration
maybe not
;o)
jrg
jrg
lol
and you are very young right?
jrg
jrg
17:47
18. first real job.
was never into gaming, always wanted to build my own game.
haha, ok then
ok
jrg
jrg
so i used Linux. and built little things. :-)
try to spend as little time in front of pc as possible
life is more than just computers
jrg
jrg
Oh, you got that right
you will say this to yourself when you are 60
but i am not 60 of course
;-)
jrg
jrg
17:48
lol
u plan to go to study at university computer science or software engineering?
jrg
jrg
Haven't yet.
jrg
jrg
plan on doing accounting major with a software engineering minor.
haha
jrg
jrg
17:49
I can't cut it with the higher math.
crazy
haha
i have been tutoring math for all my life... since i was 6 years old
;-)
jrg
jrg
I barely scraped through algebra in high school.
and studied math at university for 6 years
jrg
jrg
so i tend to stay away from that when I can, play on my skillset. :-)
haha, i was like one of 3 best math students at high school....
math is better though, it doesn't change much...
it is changing EVERY DAY !!!
it = computers
so you have to get updated every day...
and spend a lot of time for that... instead of enjoying life
and then when you are 50 , you will be unemployed since all the young guys will be better than you
jrg
jrg
17:52
it'll be interesting to see how the industry develops over the course of the next 10-20-30 years.
haha
jrg
jrg
it's already changed so much in the past 5.
it will be a disaster
forget abou privacy.... all the information about you will be public, even your thoughts
jrg
jrg
I used to think that was a conspiracy theory.
then i started diving in. and that changed my mind.
in scandinavia where i live they will stop using cash in the next 5 years... only credit cards, debit cards will be allowed to pay everywhere... so it will be clear where you spend money ... every single cent !!!
privacy is dead ...
jrg
jrg
17:55
Long live the glass house.
and also when you use android or iOS phone... all the data about where you go every day will be saved somewhere.... all the phone calls recorded and saved as well...
jrg
jrg
If you touch technology, it leaves a mark.
And unfortunately, you can't disappear anymore.
yes, but you have a right to have your private life secret...
it's all fucked...
jrg
jrg
What rights? We gave those away (here in the US) after 9/11.
jrg
jrg
17:57
in the name of "safety".
yes, and it was planned - 9/11
not a coincidence...
just a pretext for a war in iraq
and afghanistan
jrg
jrg
I was 5. I had my future taken away from me before I could even understand what the word "future" meant. I'm pissed. :P
but US will go down.... it's China and the Southeast Asia who will rule the world in 10-20 years from now... US will be weaker and weaker...
jrg
jrg
as an aside, good luck with the ubuntu removal and the windows install.
yeah.
thank u
