Q: How to use "netatalk" to share files between my Mac and AWS EC2?

Adam LiuWhen I use the ubuntu machine at the office, a very nice feature is that I can share files in my finder just by drag & drop between my laptop and the ubuntu machine. But it doesn't work when I try to do it with ec2. File sharing on the local ubuntu machine was over the internal network. It'd re...

Q: Xen on Ubuntu 18.04 with multiple private NAT networks

JonasVHThis is more of a guide for people who want to set up a VM hosting environment via XEN than it is a question. However i would like to know if there are better ways to do it and if it is secure enough. Anyway here we go. I'm renting a dedicated server at Hetzner and put Ubuntu server 18.04 LTS on ...

The most hated suggestion given by architects or testers to developers is "Just insert an if".

3:08 PM
"imma tell you where to insert that if"

LOL. Usually spotting the right location is what qualifies developers. All others would simply place the if where there is room for it in the source code. Like on empty lines.

@PerlDuck I tend to recode whole sections my colleagues made. I have yet to hear someone say: that is not as good as what I did. I even had some quit cuz he could not deal with me D:
not a single person here understands how to test a unit :P
besides me >:)

Nice to hear that I'm not the only person facing such things.

our sister company develops websites and webshops and they have 2 procedures NOBODY dares to touch. The few that did ended up crashing the webshop ending up in restoring the backup they made. Nobody understands what those 2 procedure do, but the do what they need to do perfectly :X
The only addition to it was a post-procedure event someone added to add some info to the created data after attempting to add it in the script itself and failing
I learned how to PROGRAM. Not how to CODE. I can't even count the amount of times I was looking at code pointing at code going: I don't understand that bit and the coder had to agree it was wrong :X

Sounds a bit like -- how is it called again? -- duck debugging?
Rubber ducking?
The process of explaining a problem to a rubber duck and then getting the solution by just explaining it.
Reminds me of this (presumably) urban legend about a retired engineer.
His former company had a problem with the machine he built/maintained and nobody could fix it. They asked him to help out, and so he did: He put a chalk mark at some place on the machine and told the others to hit the machine at that very spot with a hammer, and the machine resumed operations.

He sent an invoice about "Repairing XY machine -- 50,000 USD". The company complained about such an unspecific invoice and asked him to improve it.

He sent another invoice with two items: "Applying a chalk mark -- 1 USD; Identifying the right spot: 49,999 USD".
So much for the "just insert an if".

Oh i had the same with a client of hours. We offered a project for the price of 50.000 EUR. He rejected it with "a project can not cost exactly 50.000 EUR" and demanded the real offer, So we sent one for 54294.33 (a made up number above 50.000) and all was well

is it possible to run systemctl enable from a service?

9:45 PM
@DavidKamer Very difficult to answer like that.
Do you have a link to your question?

yeah, haven't posted one... Basically the issue is I have a service that runs commands, and one of the commands needs to be systemctl enable from the service that is ran using python. All other commands including apt install commands work find, so permissions are fine. I know services run as root, but I'm wondering if there is something that doesn't let another service run systemctl enable my_new_service?

@DavidKamer We need more details like name of service, source code, dependencies, ...
Best to ask a question and include those details.
Which version of Ubuntu?

None of that will matter in this situation as it is all custom code. I've already addressed questions like "does /etc/systemd/system/my_service.service exist?" The sole issue is that when my python service runs systemctl enable my_service it doesn't execute, so I assume there is a restriction on services making services or something of that nature.
version 18.04
If it's not known whether or not there is a restriction for that activity, then I'll just spend my time finding out if there is one and how to get around it if there is.
Okay, let me ask this: does stdout need to be the system for a systemctl command like echo does?
because I'm piping my output to the subprocess rather than through the system

@DavidKamer This is a Q&A site... not a Q&A chat room.

lol, was "The Welcoming" something that only happened over on SO?

@DavidKamer :D No, I'm just not the droid you're looking for...
(sorry for late reply: was AFK

not a problem... I just know that it won't get answered unless I end up answering it myself... maybe that's cynical, but I never really get answers on this site that aren't just snarky "that's not enough information" responses in comments... even for yes or no questions like "is systemctl restricted for systemd processes?" lol

@DavidKamer Look at the most highly upvoted questions.
and if you get no answers at all, delete here and ask again on U&L.
There should be no reason you should be able to enable another service from your service.
(if it's not a dependent service)
You're a dev, so you know how other dev's logic works.

that's true to an extent, but what if it is a service for managing system services?

Ah! Then you need to drop python, change to C and read the systemd source!
do it there.

@Seth sent you a note on wire that’s a tad time sensitive

@jrg SLIP?
:D
Good night!

jrg
@Fabby no. More that I know he’s had issues with push notifications through wire recently and I wanted to ensure he saw this particular message. 🤷‍♂️

Ah! Wire! I thought you meant "wire"...
