Q: Installing mmdblookup module for rsyslog on Ubuntu

TavarichI am currently trying to perform a IP lookup in the MaxMind/GeoIP DB lookup via the mmdblookup module of rsyslog. (https://www.rsyslog.com/doc/v8-stable/configuration/modules/mmdblookup.html) As part of the instructions, they specify that I need to (to use the module) to : To compile Rsyslog...

Q: Installing Linux on a cheap and messed up Lenovo 100-14IBY

gastonI was given a messed up Lenovo 100-14IBY laptop that has linux in it but a lot of functions on the keyboard are switched and some don't respond (backlight/brightness control, volume control etc). I'm used to setting up old PCs where you just plugin a bootable disk/usb with the OS and it works alm...

Does anybody know a fancy way to format an epoch timestamp like 1547919645 into a string like "in 10 minutes"? If the timestamp is far more in the future, I'd like to see "in 10 days" or something like that, not "in 1,440 minutes".
I could easily write such a function, but maybe there already is one. I mean, date accepts strings like "now + 5 minutes" or "now + 10 days". I just want it the other way round.

Q: using script to change desktop folder location

neutrinoI am using these commands to switch desktop folder just like kde activities /bin/rm -f ~/Desktop sudo ln -s ~/Documents ~/Desktop Above creates a symlink connecting the desktop to Documents folder and whatever you want. I still have to refresh desktop manually to complete the process. I have ...

7:10 PM
@PerlDuck nope.
never saw a script that does tht

@Rinzwind Well, I do know scripts that do it, but they aren't standard. So I'll write a function on my own. It's not too complicated. Basically if $delta < 60 minutes; then show $minutes; elsif $delta < 24hours; then show $hours... etc.
The question came to my mind when I was looking for a way to tell when a system is due to shutdown. I stumbled upon your answer but it didn't work on my 18.04.
Whatever.

@PerlDuck what language?

@jrg That was just pseudo code to show the idea. I would write it in perl, bash, or python, depending on my current mood.
Actually, the langauge doesn't matter (as long as I'm familiar with it). If I'd write such a function, I'd write it according to the old Unix spirit: "one tool, one purpose" so it works with echo 1547919645 | relatime and then gives 10 minutes ago ;-)

jrg
7:44 PM
and “in 10 minutes”?

@jrg You are kidding, aren't you? if $delta < 0 then print "$x minutes ago" else print "in $x minutes";

8:02 PM
Sometimes I wonder why people are so hellbent on doing strange things...

@PerlDuck reminds me of this question of mine

@Zanna That's why I stay away from anything resembling time...

jrg
@PerlDuck not kidding, just didn’t read that part.
Looks like you want something similar to that

@vidarlo has brilliant idea | is advised against it | doesn't want to have wasted time, so determines to figure out how to implement now discredited idea just for the hell of it
@vidarlo haha yeah, but there are lots of useful things in the answers to make it less painful

@jrg Yes, exactly. Unfortunately I don't know ruby but that's what I was after.
@Zanna Yes, something to that effect. Never mind. I think I'll write it on my own as soon as I really need it. I just thought maybe date had an option for this (reverse of now + 10 minutes)

8:09 PM
yeah

@zanna time is painful. No amount of tools can change that. It's like herding cats...

One of our fellows here regularly posts questions and immediately self-answers them. Maybe one day I'll do so as well with this particular "problem".

jrg
@PerlDuck might be able to look at the ruby implementation and work from that

LOL. "Herding cats". Nice imagination.

time is certainly bothering me at the moment, though not particularly from a coding perspective
@PerlDuck this is a cliche in English :) like "raining cats and dogs"

8:15 PM
@jrg Naaah, don't do that. It's really not necessary for my case.
@Zanna Cool. Thank you. I'll use it next time I'm in the UK as soon as it's applicable. :-)

jrg
@PerlDuck need it in python? I can write python...
is 3pm here and I’ve already written 3 cover letters and sent them so my Saturday is a success. Anything else I do now is gravy.

@PerlDuck :) it was vidarlo who provided :)

@jrg Please don't write it at all if you don't need it yourself. I was just asking whether such a tool already exists.
@Zanna Yes, but you explained it to me.

@PerlDuck that would be great

Ok, @zanna, I'll keep that in mind. Anyways. I'm off for tonite. Have to prepare food ... ;-)

8:32 PM
enjoy
