Q: Reputation requirement for a self answer?

Hamish WI have a question on AskUbuntu which I managed to solve myself with some guidance from another user, He suggested that I self answer my question and provided this link as reference: https://askubuntu.com/help/self-answer According to the link, there is a 15 rep requirement to self answer your pos...

Did AU's rendering of comments change recently? I noticed that my own comments don't have the tiny upvote and flag icons while other comments have them and they are greyed out (unless I upvoted a comment) until I tickle them with my mouse.
I remember this was different a few days ago, wasn't it? The first comment in that pic was from me, the others aren't.

1:26 PM
guys anyone know of a good mailing list sort of service?

2:09 PM
@TheWanderer postmark :-)

2:51 PM
@TheWanderer Amazon SES if you want to try it out using the free tier xD

3:06 PM
Cheers. Will give this a try shortly and report my results. — saricDen Jul 15 at 13:01
I wonder if the dude soft-bricked his chromebook @_@

3:18 PM
@AmithKK nice answer!

@PerlDuck I don't see a difference.
you're not supposed to be able to upvote or flag your own comment

@PerlDuck it’s annoying, but I assume it’s due to the current change and seriously hope it’ll go away
@TheWanderer yes, but the UV/flag buttons on comments should be hidden and only be revealed on mouseover

oh I see
makes sense to me
people probably didn't know they existed

@TheWanderer Yeah, of course I cannot upvote my own comments (I get that). My question was a bit unclear. I was asking about the grayed out icons that weren't there a few days ago.
@dessert Exactly!

@PerlDuck write a bug report on meta, maybe they didn’t see it yet

3:22 PM
why is this a bad change?
people should know those are there

@dessert Maybe they did it on purpose.

I doubt anybody didn’t know, they got shown on mouseover on the whole comment.

@dessert Thank you :)
@dessert I second that
It's kind of an eyesore

@dessert I have capital letters telling people what to do in my app description on the Play Store
guess what?
NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO
people are stupid

@TheWanderer I had a pop up reminding the user what to do just as they did the wrong thing

3:24 PM
I have an entire intro slider of instructions too

There still remained about 10% of users who did it anyways

along with bold red warnings

@TheWanderer It's annoying and I'm unused to it. That is the bad change.

@PerlDuck either way it’s worth a question :)

no one reads them

3:25 PM
@PerlDuck that.

@PerlDuck I wouldn't recommend everyday life then :p

also, they made the buttons bigger, which is plain ugly

@TheWanderer Unlike everyday life we have a place to report bugs though xD

What about prayer? Seems to be equally efficient to me…

3:28 PM
@TheWanderer My everyday life is exciting enough ;-) I don't need further stimulation by a load of gray boxes.

It's by design. They wanted to make the flag icon more visible.

A: Why are the comment upvote and flag options always appearing now?

Joe FriendMy bad, we should have posted something on this when we rolled it out. As mentioned by Monica, this is an intentional change to make flagging more discoverable. We can all agree it definitely does that. This is a work in progress and we are working on some additional changes to improve the la...

@terdon Thank you for sharing that post. Admittedly I don't like the new behaviour. So be it. :-(

Q: Linux won't boot after grub

MirodinI have a rather weird issue with my desktop. Today I got my new case and moved my setup over. However if I boot everything works fine (POST, Splashscreen, etc.) until GRUB tries to boot into GUI. As soon as it leaves GRUB it flashes me some ACPI exceptions for a split second ("could not find pack...

A: Why are the comment upvote and flag options always appearing now?

Samuel LiewWhile we are discussing this change, this feature could be better applied only to lower-rep users instead of everyone (but this should probably be a feature-request). In the meantime, I have created a temporary fix for those who are already familiar with the comment action icons and wish for the...

As seen on TV: They just invented a new kind of toilet paper roll without that cardboard innards. This will improve my life as I always wondered how to dispose of the cardboard roll inside once the paper was used up.
@dessert TY. Yes, I already upvoted that. Haven't tried it though.

4:10 PM
@PerlDuck LOL, my cat loves to play with those cardboard rolls, after she is finished with them you have no doubt where to put em :D

@Videonauth I totally agree. When I was in kindergarten or elementary school we all did handicrafts with those rolls.
@PeterDavidCarter Yes, please.

4:26 PM
@PerlDuck works like intended for me

Q: How to kill all processes in process group except for calling process itself?

vasilyrudWhile running a script with bash script.sh what is created is the following set of processes in a process group: PID PGID CMD 6561 6561 bash 6575 6561 p1 6565 6561 p2 I know I can kill everything in the process group with kill 0; however, this kills 6561, 6575, and 6565. How can one k...

@dessert I'll try when I've updated to 18.04 (still on 17.10).

Q: How to make Ubuntu and Chrome tolerate ultra slow connections?

user19273I am currently staying in a not very nice hotel with WiFi so overloaded with thousands of guests' devices that no page could be open in the browser, I quickly get error message 'This site can’t be reached'. However this is not entirely true, with a lot of waiting a site can be opened. I just ne...

(For those who didn't get it, that's Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" reference )

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy you got a typo in it though
if ! [ condition2 ]; then
    label2 arg1 arg2
fi
should be label1
and if you inline that check_cond function, you basically have the exact same solution that I provided...

@ByteCommander Basically, yes. Without knowing what the actual commands are needed and the actual conditions, there's not much room to wiggle. I had another approach, but got rid of that as it restructures block diagram of the logic (yeah, i sketched out a block diagram for this question)
I need headphones with a longer cable -____- or no cable at all
