4:00 AM
I just have an elevated table with a barstool. If I want to be seated, I sit. If I want a standing desk, I scoot the barstool back and stand. Zero moving parts.

4:33 AM
@Fabby well this monitor is for sure far more expensive as the two I'm using :)

1 hour later…
5:34 AM
@cl-netbox @ThomasWard Frankly, I haven't had vodka in really long time, and occasionally consider ditching coffee as well. I know, jokes, but I'm kinda on a serious note. There's more to life than alcohol and caffeine. That said, I'm not opposed to occasional drinks, just more and more opposed to abuse of those

5:54 AM
So YouTube Premium finally came to Canada.

So long, ads.

Q: Why does Xorg consume 200% cpu

Daniel NäslundI have an Ubuntu 18.04 system using Gnome3. I had some problems with my NVIDIA drivers when upgrading from 17.04. After a few iterations of purging and installing nouvea and nvidia proprietary drivers, I finally managed to install the proprietary ones and then switch to using the builtin Intel gr...

6:38 AM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Huh? There is something else out there except rum & Coke?
;-) :-) ;-)

@Fabby My rum used to be without coke . . . O_o

:D ;-) :D
@NathanOsman 12$ / month?
Donate 12$ for AbBlockPlus and Noscript a year and you're better off.

But actually, yes, there's plenty of tings in the world. Ever tried Becherovka ? Czech alcohol, made on herbs.
Really strong smell and flavor.
And Chinese rice vodka, Bai Jiu

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I live 30 Km from the Czech border
The funny thing is: 1L bottles are cheapest
0.5 is more expensive, but so are the 2L and 5L bottles.
The more you buy, the cheaper it should be...

Packaging and production cost I guess. Bulk is always cheaper

6:43 AM
I think they don't fully get the market economy yet...
;-) :-) ;-)
Anyway, shutting down Ubuntu :(

Economics are mystery to me. I still have no idea how I passed microeconomics class - I was a zombie through the whole semester

Startting up Windows :( :( :(
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Maybe you found out what's really going on: All economists are zombies!
:D ;-) :D

@_@ epiphany !!!

>:-)
OK, shuitting down or I'll be late for work, and I can't blame traffict jams!

Go on ! Have a good day there

7:01 AM
@Fabby Yes, but I can also download videos offline on the Android app and watch videos in the background.

Q: getting 'Operation not permitted' error when setting ulimit for memlock in a Docker container running ubuntu:xenial (macOS host)

Chris BedfordI am having trouble setting the 'memlock' system limit in a container that I launch like this: docker run -it ubuntu:xenial Here is what I tried in a nutshell: In bash terminal session 1: docker run -it ubuntu:xenial set /etc/security/limits.conf to include these lines * ...

@Videonauth indeedy!

@Fabby and i have too with both a plane of 3840 by 1080

@NathanOsman Ah, that's cool for most users, but you can use youtube-dl so why are you so happy about it? (sorry)

btw i managed meanwhile to repair one of my old monitors as well just have no clue yet how i should place it with the other two
which would then give me 5760 by 1080 working plane

@Videonauth I wish I had two monitors, but I have 2 desktops on Windoze and 4 on Ubuntu, so I've learned to live with that
/shrug

7:38 AM
:)
like i said you back then one of the monitors had a defective controller board
now works fine again
if th e other one can be fixed with a new board i can tell when i have money for a second replacement board

@Videonauth NJYtouch does fairly nice, generic ones

@JourneymanGeek yep got a generic one too for this one monitor
17 euros in price
cannot complain about

ah was going to say
and they sometimes have better capabilities

well this one even works with the touch buttons on the monitor itself but was far cheaper as a replacement from the manufacturer
so i now have two new monitors and one working old one
all have 1920 by 1080 resolution
just have to invent something so that i can place the third one too
my desk is to small
well maybe a wall mount, but that will have to wait till i have the money for it

I want a pair of arms for mine
so I can save the space
but thats a couple of hundred bucks

8:43 AM
hello?

1 hour later…
9:57 AM
@Fabby that's my way to remove traces of files on a partition. like shred; and on an encrypted partition, that could be used to initialize the partition with random data.

Adam JakśStop executing session for 3 mins by sleep command and show differences in process tree (with + symbol for new processes and - symbol for this which gone). How to write a script for this exercise?

Q: Make binary executable available for all user

Vaisakh RajagopalHow to make a binary file available for all linux(Ubuntu) user. eg: When we install the golang using apt install golang-go the go executable is available for all user. Where will they add the configuration for that. I checked it in global level /etc/environment, /etc/profile, /etc/init.d/ ...

11:21 AM
@solsTiCe So why not a dd if=/dev/zero of=random.bin; sync; rm random.bin then?
(trying to bypass the problem you're seeing when using pipes completely)

1 hour later…
12:43 PM
@Fabby it's not a pipe. || is an operator if the previous command failed then. like && but in reverse. But yes your comment is valid. I could have used that I guess. even dd if=/dev/zero of=zero.bin bs=4M; sync zero.bin; rm zero.bin

Q: What to do with "half-hearted" edit suggestions?

pomskyI noticed there are many edit suggestions which fix a handful of issues with the post, e.g. some typos & capitalisations, spelling & grammar issues, line breaks etc., but leaves out many more. Many of these suggestions don't include embedding images from imgur URLs, usage of code-blocks to fix ...

1 hour later…
3:29 PM
@Fabby And if we expand that to include that all zombies are minions of the Darkness, and we've already established that I am a noncorporeal entity that inhabits all darkness, then all economists are my minions muahahahahah.
all that aside, good day to all.

Q: grub2 using wrong /boot partition

ThisGuyCantEvenI recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 from a USB. I did everything the same way I'd done when upgrading from 14 to 16, and 16 to 17, and it worked every time until now. I selected "erase ubuntu 17 and install ubuntu 18" while running 18 from a USB image. Here is my issue: Grub2 loads, but seems to be...

8:39 PM
@solsTiCe I don't know what | is called in English except "the pipe symbol"... I know the difference between |, || &&... ;-)
@ThomasWard Without you, life would be so much more boring...

@Fabby: Your comment suggests roughly the same as at least one answer to the question linked below by me. Could you please vote to reopen? :-]
@Fabby I think there's no specific name for | except “vertical line/bar”. That's also the Unicode character name.

@DavidFoerster Done

Thanks.

@DavidFoerster Googled it: vertical bar, pipe, broken bar | ‖ ¦ CC@solsTiCe

In mathematics it it's often used as a symbol for various operators and thus called ”[operator name] symbol/sign”, e. g. “norm (operator) sign” or “divisibility (operator) symbol”.

8:47 PM
I'm an old fart and back when I was a kid, it was the pipe symbol, because that was the only usage for it on a mainframe...
I know |a| = abs(a)
:-)

“Pipe” is also an operator albeit not in a mathematical context.
@Fabby The absolute value is just a particular, very common norm. ;-)

Back to 23K! 17 more to go or so.

@Fabby Are you actively searching for posts to down-vote to keep your score at a particular value? :-D

:D
No, I got demoted about a year ago, remember?
@DavidFoerster this

9:05 PM
But you're already above 23K as far as I can see.
23,037

9:30 PM
Yup. 2000 to go to get back to be able to use site statistics.

10:29 PM
@DavidFoerster just stole this:
Welcome to Ask Ubuntu! Could you please add a little more detail? What exactly did you do, what did you expect to happen and what happened instead? Did you encounter any warning or error messages? Please reproduce them in their entirety in your question. You can select, copy and paste terminal content and most dialogue messages in Ubuntu. Please **[edit]** your post to add information instead of posting a comment. (see [How do I ask a good question?](askubuntu.com/help/how-to-ask))

@Fabby: The original has an emphasis on “exactly”.

@Fabby Hello Fabby-lous ~

:D :D :D
How are ya doing in the Paris of Canada?

Enjoying Football viewing of World Cup?

Urgh...
That's why it's so quiet in here!!!

Yeah half the world stops for a month every four years

I've seen enough football as a kid to last me a lifetime!
I still have a flat in Moscow, but not going there now...

11:41 PM
It would be a great party in Moscow right now, They just beat Egypt.

So you watching footbell?
They did?

One of the internet channels I watch is RT and their half hour broadcast is now 25 minutes about world cup.

Good. I had someone tell me Germany lost from Mexico and I told them: It's not Friday yet, haven't looks at the scores yet.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix :D :D :D

Yeah Mexico beating Germany was a highlight of the broadcast last night or the night before.

:D
I can guess...

11:44 PM
What's new in Europe?

Now when I don't want a meeting, I look up the schedule when their country is playing and tell them I'm only free whenever their country is playing
I dunno how Europe is doing...
Too much work!

Well that's good...keeps you out of prison :S

12h days and after office hours still getting bugged by US colleagues.

:thinking:
I suppose it does keep me out of prison and keeps me from spending money...
I asked for a month of holiday in August and it got refused...

11:47 PM
Ask Ubuntu keeps me from spending money :p

... because there was too much work coming up
@WinEunuuchs2Unix And you gain gold coins and silver and bronze and rep!
Hey! Cool!
:D
So how's live in the warehouse? Don't want to change that for a Data Center?
Better pay...
Still physical work!
Free gym!
:D

I don't get many medals. Most my points come from many answers with few upvotes. Not like some of the other guys. I just asked the President last Thursday for work in the software area. Warehouse has been crazy busy though. They bounce me all over between Receiving, Put-away, Picking and Shipping and even some It stuff. Problem with being able to do everything is they make you do everything :p

Hey, hoh do you do these:

It's conky running on my desktop all the time.
That's only the top half of the screen though.

I mean: how do you make the GIFs???
P.S. The OP earlier had 2 good answers and now he has none!!!
:D :D :D
Can I go for a smoke?
5 min???

11:51 PM
Yup go smoke...I'm smoking now :D
It's called peek
Best GIF maker there is I've found so far.
Yeah the guy deserves no answers if he's antagonistic.

I used to work as a PM fro DHL to deploy WH SW so I kno quite a bit about it and as prep for the project kick-off I even worked in both the warehouse and loading planes...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix sudo apt install peek ?
SMOKE! BRB....

I can't remember, try sudo apt install first if it doesn't work we can google the PPA
