@AskUbuntuMeta Moved to main site, so blah.
Unrelated, it seems that I've become a networking expert o.O
(not a hardware diagnostics type expert but an expert in designing network setups and making things like Ubuntu servers as routers work. never expected that to become one of my specialities xD

I'm so happy
I finally tracked down what was causing kworker to idle at 12% CPU

Nice to see you - everything okay @Rinzwind ? :)

(good day to all)

Hi Thomas ! :)

@ThomasWard have some sugar with that coffee :=)

@Rinzwind the caffeine is important, it's what helps stabilize the INSANE in me :P

@ThomasWard improve it even more by adding some vodka ... that's what we learned from @SergiyKolodyazhnyy ! :D :D :D

2:03 PM
@cl-netbox That is an insult to today!

@Rinzwind hahaha :D

unlimited coffee though with a coffee maker at my own desk, so that's a plus >:D

@ThomasWard reasonable argument ... :)
@ThomasWard better pure coffee than nothing at all - right ? :D

well, there's coffee like everyone drinks... and then there's coffee which fuels my power sometimes.
@cl-netbox so depending on which coffee we're talking about, the answer is 'maybe'

@ThomasWard Meeting coming up
I've been going back-and-fro with this guy to wrap my head around what he wants to accomplish.
Will be back in 30 minutes

4:43 PM
@Fabby well, then we should close as unclear instead of answer
since OP hasn't given any kind of idea of what they want to achieve. or they just don't know how to explain it.

5:31 PM
True! Going to VTC.
@ThomasWard Bounty question cannot be VTCed
I'm going to delete all my comments below the answer.
Suggest you do same.

one more close vote needed for a minty question!

@Fabby there you go

hi :) so I'm having wifi problems on 16.04 that I can't debug... not sure how to proceed. My wifi card seems to be recognised and active?
`lsusb` shows the card
`dmesg` seems to suggest the card has been found (when i unplug and plug it back in)
but ... no wifi networks found in the top right. Clearly I'm missing a step in installing this thing but I have no idea what it is. any help?

@dessert Danke!
@sinjax What's the link to your question on this sitte?

should I ...ask it as a question on stack exchange?

Q: Ubuntu 18.04: Failed to find module 'mesa' when loading kernel modules

Stuart FoxcroftI recently turned on my laptop upon returning home and found that it would not boot properly, exhibiting 'Load Kernel Modules' errors and forcing me to use tty2 through 6 to achieve anything. thanks @fabby

just ran the info script, not much to divine there :)

Nope, but now you're ready to ask a question on the site if you cannot figure it out yourself.
Post the paste.ubuntu.com link you got in your question.

7:44 PM
@Fabby my question is here: askubuntu.com/questions/1047987/…

@sinjax Recursive link detected. Stack overflow; kernel panic.
:D

hah yeah sorry changed the link :)
long day
feels.... like it's telling me the card is active and present? and yet it isn't visible in the network-manager menu
im starting to think the network manager menu isn't magic

only looking now

@sinjax Do you have an Ethernet cable?
@sinjax Disregard me for the moment.
@sinjax Chili555 is the best we have on the site for wireless problems!

@Fabby would you rather me just drop thermite on that one comment you made with the next one saying "disregard me"? (rather than leave the comment there)

@Fabby
no ethernet cable long enough no :D

7:58 PM
@ThomasWard Are you the best we have then?
:-) :-) :-)

no i meant the possible duplicate comment :P

Ah! :D
You idiot! :-) :-) :-)

@Fabby chili555 really is one of the best at fixing wifi hardware problems, you aren't wrong about that one.

@sinjax Do you have a desktop or a tower?
@ThomasWard Starred for his enjoyment!

fun fact: my phone tries to autocorrect your name to 'Flabby' whenever I type it in. You didn't anger someone at Samsung or who works on the Android OS did you? >.>

8:00 PM
:D :D :D
It's a pretty good phone then!

...? :D it's a tower...

@Fabby oh, also, 'desktop' and 'tower' are synonymous. #fail

@sinjax Are you older than 70?
@ThomasWard nah. if desktop, I would have asked older than 80...

@fabby not last i checked :)
i like to imagine this line of questioning will lead to an answer, but i suppose not :)

@sinjax Well then move your tower closer to the router, plug in the short Ethernet cable and run:
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
because you're running o an old kernel and it might just automagically dissapear after the update.
(but like I said: follow chili555's request and post the output in your question)
@sinjax Chili already found the issue...
He's good!

8:09 PM
Chilli suggested disabling a module which seemed to make the wifi interface disappear.
i tried disabling the other one he said was conflicting
no joy on the scan

@sinjax I told him to drop by here.
IMHO, you should upgrade your kernel first, but I'll ask chili first.

fair.

SMOKE! BRB...

I mean i guess i can just, reinstall to the latest ubuntu, the machine is a bit of a wrapper around the GPU that i access through docker so the specific install of ubuntu is a little irrelevant

waves to @chili555

8:18 PM
@sinjax I suggest that you actually blacklist rtl8192cu and reboot and check. If no joy, change the blaclist file to blacklist rtl8xxxu and reboot. Do you need a step-by-step?

how does one blacklist a thing
:)

Good afternoon @ThomasWard
@sinjax Please return to your question and I'll propose an answer. Depending on the result, I'll edit the answer to further refine it.

sure thing @chili555

@sinjax writing now...

@chili555 Woohoo! And we'll all come and upvote it!
:-) :-) :-)

8:26 PM

close vote retracted.

@chili555 attempting a restart after blacklisting

@ThomasWard Now I finally get it: you've got two mouths: one just for evil laughter and one for talking!
@sinjax wait until he's posted an answer...
[at]Thomas >:-) >:-) >:-)

@sinjax Tentative answer posted.

@chili555 blacklisting the first had no effect, attempting to blacklist the second

8:31 PM
upvoted already because it's going to be solved soon!
@chili555 How are you doing lately???

@Fabby you presuppose that I had only one mouth to begin with, or that I even have a mouth. For all you know I have a computer jacked into my mind that translates what I want to say into a speaker and speaks for me. :)

@Fabby LOL! Fingers crossed.

@chili555 alas, no change :) i'll revert that

@ThomasWard :D I indeed presumed you were human... Now I know you're not!
;-) :-) ;-)
@sinjax you tried both already now? :/

@sinjax We need one or the other blacklisted and then we can troubleshoot, starting with dmesg | grep rtl

8:34 PM
Hi @all!

Guten Abend!

having a look

@sinjax which is blacklisted now and did you reboot after applying the blacklist?

I came across an (apparently Iranian) user with double Sig runes as their profile picture. :-S
Don't know if SE tolerates such things…

removed the blackllist... trying something... booting off a usb and seeing if the wifi just...works?
seems like it doesn't work from the usb either...interesting

8:41 PM
@DavidFoerster It's cultural... Illegal in Germany, offensive to most of Europe, not so much outside there.

@sinjax blacklist rtl8192cu and then let me see: dmesg | grep rtl I'd probably also revert your partly faulty additions to /etc/network/interfaces as well and let Network Manager do the work.

@Fabby I'm aware of that much. I'm trying to find SE's stance specifically.

I'll ask around in The Tavern.

Offensive in my neck of the woods, too.

welp. I have found that one of my usb wifi dongles seems to work with ubuntu 18.04 :D so...if none of this works I'll just install that
but let's keep going for a bit... dmesg | grep rtl, let me just boot again

8:45 PM
@DavidFoerster flag a post by the user

Forgot to post the link to the offending profile:

I suggest that we take this to our own chat and not junk up the Generals.

@DavidFoerster flag a post of such a user, let the mods deal with it is the advice from @JourneymanGeek

might be nice, since you're going to have to custom flag anyway, to include context to why its bad

it's my advice too
@Fabby ... which also presupposes that i actually exist, for all you know i'm a sentient cloud of pure Darkness that spans all of Existence :P

8:46 PM
hah, I was going to summon you guys ;)

@ThomasWard You're a Shadow...

@Fabby ... but much more evil >:D

Its all fun and games... until someone destroys a planet.

@JourneymanGeek You don't summon Thomas: he summons himself!

rm -rf /planets/earth oops

8:47 PM
:D :D :D

@Fabby oh any mod
though technically we should just flag if its not our site

@JourneymanGeek Huh?
Mods cannot flag to ask another mod in another TZ???

Tim appears to argue against it in a similar case:

A: Do we have a position on neo-Nazi profiles?

Tim PostI'm Tim Post, a community manager for Stack Exchange, I'd like to respond to this and appreciate you bringing it up. No one gets to infect a site with rants of any kind, Nazi or otherwise. Similarly, one doesn't have the right to proselytize their political views, religion, phobias or hate in a ...

@Fabby I'm not an AU mod ;)
flagging >>> pinging since you ping one mod. Any mod can pick up a flag

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, you're a SuperUser mod...

8:50 PM
> It no longer displays a swastika.

@DavidFoerster ---^

Alright. I'm still looking for the flag link on the profile page before I write an e-mail.

flag a post

I guess so. The profile image is visible on all of them after all.

@sinjax rebooted yet?

8:53 PM
May I flag?

You may...
(as you get to do so little flagging)
Bell. BRB

FLAG IT! FLAG IT NOW BEFORE THE FIRESTORMS RAIN DOWN FROM THE HEAVENS! (yes I had too much coffee and sugar)

@ThomasWard done the needful

@JourneymanGeek Done!

@DavidFoerster @JourneymanGeek Handled.

8:57 PM
looks like he has an account on SU as well
However no need to flag

@ThomasWard Better. Thanks.

@JourneymanGeek Again, handled, I think.

Funnily enough, now @DavidFoerster is the one displaying Schutzstaffel insignia >:-)
Shall I flag that post too? ;-) :D ;-)

@Fabby Well… its obsolete now anyway. Be my guest.

No way! Too funny! :-)
I should star it instead of flagging it... ;-)
back to movie...
ping me if the Chat Room's on fire!

Nice, Satellite Reign for Linux is on sale on GOG.

@Fabby thing is, I'd like to know the answer too :)

9:18 PM
@DavidFoerster they've been running sales recently. It was $5 on steam about a month ago for all platforms

@RobotHumans Yeah, GOG and Steam both have summer sales. I try to avoid the latter though if I can.

I didn't even know GOG has Linux games

The only things I bought on Steam in the last 8 years are games made by Valve (and thus don't work without Steam) or when no other platform sold the Linux build at a reasonable price (e. g. XCOM: EU).
(GOG does sell XCOM: EU for Linux now but they didn't at the time.)

I bought dying light there, and I buy bundles there sometimes - if it's 4-10 games for $20 USD.

@SebastianStark They did so for years.

9:23 PM
Probably I never noticed because I mostly play AAA titles (yeah, I know)

@SebastianStark Isn't XCOM an AAA title? Also The Witcher series starting with part 2.

@SebastianStark Done! and hardware problem solved through software

@DavidFoerster you say witcher 3 runs on linux!?
@Fabby that's awesome. And good I didn't write anything. I did not even know MMCs are replaceable.

@SebastianStark Never mind. They announced it as a possibility at an early development phase but decided against it in favour of other more popular platforms.

9:25 PM
oh

@SebastianStark Yes you do:
In consumer electronics, the MultiMediaCard (MMC) is a memory-card standard used for solid-state storage. Unveiled in 1997 by SanDisk and Siemens AG, MMC is based on a surface-contact low pin-count serial interface using a single memory stack substrate assembly, and is therefore much smaller than earlier systems based on high pin-count parallel interfaces using traditional surface-mount assembly such as CompactFlash. Both products were initially introduced using SanDisk NOR-based flash technology. MMC is about the size of a postage stamp: 24 mm × 32 mm × 1.4 mm. MMC originally used a 1-bit serial...

haha, I never heard of those cards, how is this possible.

Do you have a phone with an SD-Card?
this is the old version

I think the Linux port of TW2 came to be because a game porting studio received funding for it from investors due to the hype around SteamOS and the Steam Box. CDPR didn't do it itself but sold the rights to that studio. I hear the port performed rather poorly.

@Fabby of course I know SD cards

9:28 PM
Same technology, different form factor

@DavidFoerster they should release cyberpunk as linux only :)

@SebastianStark He'll probably need the service manual of the Lenovo to take it apart and change the MMC, but it's a hardware problem, so...

Original MMC is SD form factor. microSD is basically what everything uses now (rpi3, bbgw/bbb, phones, cameras)

@SebastianStark SteamPunk Desktop
(not CyberPunk, but still : Punk!)

I like it :)

I want the icon theme

@SebastianStark erm, it's home-brewn...
I have all of the icons in my /usr/share/pixmaps

My musical reception stopped 1974
@Fabby :(

@SebastianStark So that makes you 62???

^ my wallpaper (size-reduced)

9:34 PM
@Fabby not quite :)

The original clocks in at 23k×8k and close to 100 MB.

Music reception stopped in 1974, so you were 22 then, so 62 now.
@SebastianStark OK, maybe 58
@DavidFoerster Cool!
@DavidFoerster 2944 × 1280 pixels???

yes, very cool background

Who needs 2 monitors with such a monitor??? CC@Videonauth

@Fabby it was my way of saying that I'm not so much into punk music, but rather what was before :)

9:38 PM
@SebastianStark :D :D :D

@Fabby The primary screen is 1920×1200 and then I have a pivoted secondary screen with 1280×1024 (since I'm a poor student and pick up stuff from classifieds).

@Fabby I like the looks but it's a bit too visually exciting for me as a workspace background. :-)

amber monitor is enough for the color range of that :)

9:41 PM
:D
@SebastianStark So how old are you? Decade is good enough...

>40
so, normal

Young buck...
I'm officially an old fart: I'm a Vorlon and existed before the human race was born...

that's good to hear :)

>:-)
[up-arrow] is your friend...

9:44 PM
@Fabby Cool! Just no poetry, please!

where did @sinjax disappear to?
@DavidFoerster :D :D :D
I should watch Babylon 5 again...
Currently watching Space 1999

I'm currently binging South Park since I can't really get up for much more than a trip to the bathroom atm.
In fact I should probably go and lie back down on the sofa.

@DavidFoerster Ill?

@Fabby Prolonged back pain. A first for me.

@DavidFoerster Flexium Gel. Works on bones and muscle tissue.
If that doesn't help after 3 days, go see a doctor.
As my grandmother used to say:

9:49 PM
Ironically I got it while buying and thus moving a proper ergonomic office chair to replace my old and shitty one.

@DavidFoerster I have the feeling it's back pain season. So many people (including myself) have complained about back pain in the last two weeks

You have two eyes, to ears, two arms and two legs, but only one back...
Walk straight!
:D
@DavidFoerster :D :D :D
Tha's really ironic...

:)
I don't believe in anything ergonomic

it's like with "healthy" candy

9:51 PM
Well, it wasn't labelled as such but it sure as hell is more comfortable and size-adjustable than my previous model.

I'm currently lying down in front of my computer...

what I mean is: if for some thing there exists an "ergonomic" version, it normally means that it's bad for you. Sitting, typing, mousing, lifting
I think the only way to fix it is to avoid as much as possible

It actually lets and makes me sit straight instead of just letting me slink down on it over time.

@DavidFoerster hope it works for you then
consider an adjustable standing table

Yes, that's certainly among the list of things to get even just for reading. That's half of a good developer's work anyway.
Like, at least a podium with a tablet computer or e-reader.
