I'm writing a shell script to rename a bunch of files numerically
n=1
for file in * do
	mv $file "2 ($n).jpg"
	N=$((N+1))
done
but I keep getting the error unexpected token near `mv'

@Videonauth no, that’s exactly what I did! try:

@J.L.Louis I really recommend shellcheck.net, also available for the command line in package shellcheck. You did a number of things wrong there, most importantly you forgot the ; before do and mixed case with the variable n/N. I’d do it as follows:
n=1
for file in *; do
  echo mv "$file" "2 ($((n++)))".${file##*.}
done
or with (perl) rename:
rename -n 's/.+/our $i;sprintf("2 (%d).jpg", 1+$i++)/e' *

A: How to rename multiple files sequentially from command line?

Oli The rename tool that ships with Ubuntu is pretty hot at this sort of stuff. You can embed little Perl expressions like so: rename -n 's/.+/our $i; sprintf("AS%d.txt", 1+$i++)/e' * That will just show you what it would do. Remove the -n to make it a live-fire exercise. This basically works b...

Q: Renaming files in a folder to sequential numbers

GnuttI want to rename the files in a directory to sequential numbers. Based on creation date of the files. For Example sadf.jpg to 0001.jpg, wrjr3.jpg to 0002.jpg and so on, the number of leading zeroes depending on the total amount of files (no need for extra zeroes if not needed).

So I ended up buying an NVMe disk.
3,200 MB/s sequential read is too hard to pass up :P

@Videonauth ignore that, I read “double quotes” (yawn) – you’re right, works with single quotes

I am gonna make it my priority to review FPs, even though it's such a slog

@Zanna do you mean your past few reviews?

@Zanna askubuntu.com/review/first-posts/840955 bad advice even after editing ;)

@Videonauth no! I'm not a prolific First posts reviewer. I rarely review this queue
@Rinzwind yeah, I downvoted
but don't know what to comment
that's why I skipped the post in review
hoping someone would be able to explain the problem properly
@Videonauth I mean, three people are choosing No Action Needed for every post they review

@Zanna see comment >:)

NAN = No Action Needed

10:31 AM
@Zanna ah ok, well i rarely review lately

I'd expect mode changes on stuff in /sys not to survive reboot... those are not real files

im just having a few days i can spend time on the site really and i chosen to use it rather for answeering stuff instead of reviews

@Zanna true\

@Videonauth sure, this is not about you or anyone here. You aren't under any obligation to review whatsoever! If you want to spend time on the site, spend it how you like

I will for sure, you know me :D

10:32 AM
but it frustrates me that people choose to spend their time reviewing and then just do nothing haha

yes unerstandably, if you review FP que you should habe a keen eye for typos and being happy to edit posts, most FP are in severe need for edits

VTD'd it >:)

@Rinzwind heh probably justified

Ulysses DescaplaceI have very long story but for just one thing now, I downloaded JPEG source files in tarball, which is probably most like typical sources in the early time of the Internet. I am just gonna review FP/LA myself as much as possible. I tried making a meta post about it, and I occasionally examine and flag the bad reviews. But I don't see any of those things making a big difference

10:35 AM
I read it 3 times now and ... I still don't get it

jpeg source???
can i have some of his smoke ... ?

I'm finding reviewing those queues a little less of slog than I used to (possibly I understand the site better, more likely I became lazier)
Maybe reviewing FPs and LAs should be a 40k privilege XD
@Rinzwind I read that earlier and decided it hadn't been written by a human

@Zanna ow, so you want to lock me out (sniff)
now as im close to 20k

lol no I'm just being silly

:)

@Videonauth is that asking for downvotes?

@Rinzwind kinda :) well for sure not asking anyone for votes, votes are for good posts and nothing else

:) 20k is great

i will get there today or tomorrow anyways

Q: Is Ubuntu participating as a mentoring organisation in google code in 2018?

AniketDwivediLast year(2017), Ubuntu participated as a mentoring organization in Google Code-in 2017. Will Ubuntu participate this year too? Asking because I reviewed old stats from archives and saw Ubuntu participated for the first time. CHEERS!!!

@dessert well it was about two hours of trying to find the cause lol
needed to at least vent this whole tension a bit
and this wasnt the only chat i was logged out from

@Videonauth maybe they made changes to their privacy policy ;P

@dessert aahhhhhhhh, come on leave me alone with this, my email boxes are full of mails, and every page i try to log into bothers me with this, I will be happy if this whole ordeal is over with and everyone has adapted to it

The GDPR jokes are abounding today. NY Times and Chicago tribune are both just denying EU country access.
I'm waiting for someone denied service to just remove the risk to sue for discrimination based on being EU based and US VPN services to become a thing.

@RobotHumans weird i can access nytimes homepage easily

3:41 PM
May have changed, but it crossed my feed earlier. I may have misread it LA times.
When I hear "times" my brain automatically goes with NY, my mistake.

well lol

4:03 PM
Yeah. The same companies undergoing blackout could just spin up VPN services and say "We're not getting in to the rat's nest of what could be construed as what. So, if you want to use our site, get a VPN connection. It'll let you use the site if you want, and it gives us plausible deniability."

@RobotHumans free overload keys: pcgamesn.com/overload/free-games-overload
oh hey you're here. Might be in time then :D
oh just realized they're only beta keys..
shoot

If they're doing the same thing as the Ghost in the shell game, it's not really a beta. It's in game asset sales and calling it a beta was to get people to submit their email.

@RobotHumans It's a key to the multiplayer beta.
Will totally work until the 31st when release date is. Then idk what happens
I thought it was an early access key, which would make the game essentially free, but I guess not.

Ah. No idea. I'm really more of a single-player guy. My ISP throttles multiplayer games really hard, so I generally don't play multi.

@RobotHumans ouch. That's not cool.
it's client/server however so I'm not sure how they'd tell

4:16 PM
frequency of packets to a single ip on a given port. Like, I can stream 3 videos at the same time, but MW3 lags out on a box that runs Dying Light just fine.

dang.. that's not cool :(
There is a singleplayer trailer with ~2 or 3 levels you can try if you want.
In other news I caved and installed 18.04 on my desktop. It's awful!
I really wanted to believe it wasn't that bad.. but it's really bad.

Yep. I'm at EOL and I leapfrog. So, I was hoping I didn't have to install 16.04. Sadly, I do from general reports. I wonder if the general bad is still true in other DEs? Like if I do the full burndown and start with LXQT, will all the bad still be there sort of thing?

@RobotHumans 16.04? 16.04 is still fine. It'll have Unity until it goes EoL.

I'm on 14.04 XFCE now, but I was trying to wait until LXQT went main for LXDE

I'm not sure about the general bad though. I doubt it effects other DEs but I don't really know. Trying to decide what to do now. KDE, xfce..something else
@RobotHumans ah. That hasn't happened yet?

4:24 PM
@Seth not that I'm aware of. It's installable easily, but last I checked it was install base add LXQT or install LXDE add repo install.

oh and happy GDPR day everyone. ha. ha. ha
@RobotHumans ah. Pity. I'm surprised it isn't mainline yet.

I should probs check, last I checked was 17.10
@Seth yep
Hmm, looks like that did land in 18.04. Well that's one good thing.

oh that's nice

What a dumb question: Is there a shorthand character class for [A-Za-z]? [^\d\s] seems over-complicated…

@dessert link?

the question is mine and I didn’t post it on main xD

@dessert How many drinks have you had so far today???
>:-) >:-) >:-)

I just feel it’s a really dumb question, but I can’t find anything – \w isn’t what I thought it would be: [A-Za-z0-9_]
@Fabby none actually, maybe that’s the problem

@dessert :D :D :D
I've had too many and don't know enough about RegEx...

7:13 PM
PITINBBKAC – problem is, there is no bottle between keyboard and chair

@dessert So now you want service too? give me your teleporter ID and I'll teleport over and serve you a Whiskey & Pepsi Max.

@dessert what flavour regex? I don't know one... you can use [:alpha:] but... it's not shorter XD

@Zanna er… aren’t these shorthand classes quite universal? perl made some extensions as it seems, but the basics…

7:34 PM
[Ctrl][F]Different Regular Expression Engines[Enter]

@Fabby that’s exactly where I came from: “The tutorial alerts you when these flavors require different syntax or show different behavior.” and regular-expressions.info/shorthand.html does no such thing (except the perl extensions)
and others :P

What I don't like about [:alpha:] (and its siblings) is that I never know whether special characters are included as well (like German umlauts, for instance).

hmm... are those ASCII?

no, they aren't. but there's also [:ascii:] (at least in Perl).

Ü and ü are part of the extended ascii table

7:42 PM
My lastname contains those. :-(

so i guess its Müller
or Küster

@PerlDuck not in sed, but we can specify unicode escape ranges in the C locale to workaround it

the two most common last names conaining ü

@Videonauth :D :D :D

Eliah Kagan showed me this command to find the unicode number of a character
perl -wpe 's/./sprintf " %d", ord $&/ge'
it reads from stdin
very useful

7:44 PM
LOL, no. My last name isn't particularly common. I always have to spell it.

@Fabby :D :D :D

PerlDück.

@Videonauth Which is #3?
@PerlDuck :D :D :D

no those aren't unicode numbers...

@Fabby no clue right now, the most common names in germany are derivated from jobs people had at medieval times
maier, müller, schmitt

7:47 PM
Smith

a mainer was someone who raised cattle and provided milk to the people, müller is a miller, and yes smith is schmitt
even my last name was a medieval job someone had to do
as fabby knows my last name hes the one to guess what the job was

They already had youtube 500yrs ago? Cool. Didn't know.

TIL

@Videonauth Not going to try here as people might guess who you are eventually and then refuse to ever speak to you again!
:D ;-) :D

hahaha

7:54 PM
@Zanna Had to google that!

but a good one, even tho not very common name

@Videonauth Well, my first name + Last name is unique world-wide.
Even in the 100000+ company I work in, only 7 people have my first name
and none have my surname last time I looked (6 months ago)

So then your first name is not Fabian like I could have guessed

@PerlDuck Although I live in Germany, I'm not German...

@PerlDuck nope far from the real fabby-man name

8:00 PM
(that's why my profile says "Citizen of this Galaxy": it's complicated...

@fabby is the hdajackretask wrong or does it just annoy you?

Flag the question as duplicate is more appropriate.

recently we had this "ods → docx" question. similar thing.

8:07 PM
@PerlDuck What was the consensus?

dunno. some moron double-posted the very same question whithin 10 minutes and didn't respond to questions in comments. eventually one was suggested as dupe of the other.

yes but here we have answers to toally unrelated questions which are exact duplicates
i just try not to ping our mods to often :)
Oh la la
its happening
ok what needed delete votes?
:D
ok the ones which where downvoted got a delete vote from me

Hey, @Videonauth congrats!

Thank you

Don't forget: when you run sudo the first time it says "With great power comes great responsibility."

8:18 PM
@PerlDuck :) I know

I just stumbled upon this question and am wondering why it got 3 upvotes. It isn't particularly bad but how could three people consider it "showing research effort, being clear and useful"?
Any ideas?
And please don't downvote it now just because I mentioned it. It's just an example.

@PerlDuck no my upvote is locked in anyways, i always upvote qa question i write an answer to
means it was clear enough for me to provide an answer
the other two, dont know
only exception are questions which are clearly a duplicate where i write an answer out of boredom, those wont get an upvote

Perhaps I focus too much on the "shows research" part. I often see questions and ask myself "why the hell didn't you google in the first place?!"

@Videonauth I only upvote if they accept my answer...
>:-) >:-) >:-)
Only then does it mean it was a good question!

hehe

Q: Ubuntu 16.04 ssh key not working after VM clone

masterqSo I have made a KVM template of Ubuntu 16.04 on Proxmox and I add the key before converting it to a template ssh-copy-id -i /home/host/ssh/LinuxVM/id_rsa root@51.38.xxx.xxx At this point I can authenticate fine. I then turn off the VM and convert it to a template. After cloning I am unable to...

@Fabby do you think its a testicular problem or maybe to much testosteron? :D

@Videonauth As an a-sexual alien my subjective opinion is that they're just thinking with the wrong head! (cc @Zanna )
>:-) >:-) >:-)

8:41 PM
if you need an explanation though, my theory is that men are literally raised to be helpless and not listen, because nobody expects them to be able to clean up after themselves or organise stuff for themselves or teaches them how to do it. Meanwhile we complain that men don't listen and little boys believe us so don't learn to listen either. We also tolerate their bad behaviour saying "boys are like this" and so they become like that. So, the mothers of the world (and the fathers) are at fault

@Zanna my sons listen.

One should strive to surpass the education one was given...

;)

@dessert They still listen... Wait a couple of years...

yes, I am a teacher and I know lots of boys who listen
listening is probably educated out of them

8:45 PM
@Zanna LOL! I'm currently binge-watching "The Middle" which totally confirms what you say. I love it, though.

:)

:D Creativity and intuitive thinking is educated out of most children...

agree 100%
the education system is a terrible terrible thing

yes same with the scientific methotology
every baby knows it and uses it but still when people reach the age to go to university, they have to relearn it

I even know some lovely teenage boys who are great listeners
and I know a few grown men who are good listeners too
so it's just a myth
a destructive myth
like the one that girls can't do math
shrug
past bed time!

8:49 PM
If I would have received 1€ for every time I had to explain to yet another Manager: "I'm an intuitive thinker and 85% of the time I'm spot on, 10% of the time I'm mostly right and 5% of the time I'm completely wrong, and this feels completely wrong!" I would have retired rich and beautiful a long time ago...
@Zanna :O That's just plain wrong!
Sleep tight, bed bugs, etc...

better not be any bugs

@Zanna Good Night, Sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite!

like i said every baby knows the scientific method

I'll kill the little suckers

8:51 PM
@Videonauth :LOL: Starred!!!
No need starring Zanna's reply: everyone looking at Videonauth's pic will see that one!
:D :D :D

not the babies, the bugs...

Q: Linux - Hades Canyon Intel Nuc 8th Generation

davideI have recently acquired a Hades Canyon (Intel Nuc8i7hvk) and I'm trying to put Linux on it. I have tried Ubuntu 18.04/Debian 9.4. On the Ubuntu 18.04 version I make it to the Grub option page, and then I see a black screen hanging on the system. On Debian 9.4 I make it to the Grub option page ...

@Fabby That seems fine to me.
No different then telling people how to go into the BIOS to tell it to boot USB
or maybe I'm missing something
