Q: How can I create a bootable flash drive for Lbuntu and also store temporarily other personal files in the same flash drive?

TimI have a flash drive, whose information given by sudo fdisk -l is Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type /dev/sdb1 1 7864319 7864319 3.8G c W95 FAT32 (LBA) I would like to know how I can use the flash drive for two things simultaneously: a bootable flash drive for Lu...

Hey guys, quick question that I didn't know if I should post or not:

So after I connected a device to my laptop with bluetooth, I turned off my laptop before manually disconnecting from the device. When I powered back on, I still have the latency correction while using the laptop speakers, so the video is about a second ahead of the audio. Any solutions?
(By the way, it was a bluetooth speaker)
Also, it's hard to tell as to whether it's pulseaudio or something else. On youtube, it's delayed by a second. However, in VLC, it glitches out and gets blurry, and slows by about .5 seconds.
Yeah okay, might as well post it

Okay, turns out I solved my own problem. In Pulseaudio Volume Control I went to the output devices, then clicked advanced under my laptop speakers, and found that the latency correction was set to 1000 ms. Simply changed it to 0, and we're back!

Q: What live OS with reasonably small size that I can use to rescue files on a laptop?

TimI only have two flash drives: 4GB and 1GB. I would like to create a bootable flash drive for a live Lubuntu installation, so that in case my very old laptop's Lubuntu can't boot, I can rescue my files by booting into the live Lubuntu out of my flash drive. Since lubuntu-18.04-desktop-amd64.iso ...

@Zanna time for you to apply for moderation :=D

@ParanoidPanda thanks :)
@Rinzwind dear SE, I have proved myself to be a pedantic interfering so-and-so, please make me a mod, sincerely, Zanna

Dear Zanna: done :=)

@andrew.46 I am mostly ok, thank you. About to start a busy period of work!

@ParanoidPanda that’s a good thing – did you read Hundertwasser’s “Holy Shit Manifesto”?

@Zanna Just finisdhed a long day at work here :)

@Varuna I dont see anything weird? He placed the launcher at the bottom. That's an option for the launcher. It ould also be an extension though ( extensions.gnome.org/extension/3/bottom-panel ) He uses flat remix icons. github.com/daniruiz/flat-remix

Q: Ubuntu 18, what is using my hard-disk space?

AnshulI recently installed Ubunt 18.04 on my machine and installed all the regular stuff that I had put the 17.10 version. However, it seems like something is amiss as my linux partition is showing absurdly high memory used. Here's what a df -h looks like (sda7 is linux) Filesystem Size Used A...

@Melebius Oh, don’t let Zanna see this… ;) Seriously, I don’t think this other question is of any help here, the manpages etc. contain even less information on this exact matter than the online documentation. — dessert 39 secs ago

hahaha yeah
already voted Leave Open on that one

sorry for the pingpong

oh no, I'm glad you pinged me so I could enjoy your comment XD

I don’t always agree with you when it comes to this, but this is crystal-clear.

As I wrote most of the Q&A it actually doesn’t matter where people leave their upvotes. ;P

lol
IMHO, the ability to close stuff as a dupe is not given to us to prevent people getting rep or to spare people the effort of writing answers... it's to avoid having a million more-or-less poor copies of the exact same thing and avoid duplication of effort

Q: Keymap file works under Centos Gnome terminal but only works partially under Ubuntu(possibly X server)

WesternGunI am editing a keymap file (like those located under /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols in Ubuntu, or those under /usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/legacy/i386/ in CentOS) to create a custom keyboard layout. It is partially done, and you can see it here: https://github.com/WesternGun/Symmetri-Keyboard-layout/tree/m...

@dessert Holy shit!
That's a good one!
:D ;-) :D

@Fabby I just knew you’d like it. ;)

:-)
@Zanna Unless both Q and A are both as good as drivel...

Evenin' fellas
So I have this weird problem, and I'd like some help formulating a question (or, if it turns out to be small, just solve it here)

@MadaraUchiha o/

A giant just stepped in...
:-)
We're only used to Rinzwind and Oli having >100K and being in chat.

Sometimes, when I get to the login screen, the keyboard simply refuses to respond
The mouse works, and I can log in by enabling the on-screen keyboard, that still doesn't "wake" the keyboard up.

Urgh... a "sometimes" error...

After a reboot or three, it fixes itself.
'till the next time

Internal or external keyboard?

external
It's a dektop

PS2 port or USB?

9:33 PM
Worth noting I also have a Windows boot on this machine, and it doesn't cause problems there

tried a different USB port?

USB
I have, yes

Tried a different keyboard?

I don't have another keyboard handy.

Ah...

9:35 PM
Israel
I'm hoping for tips for debugging it from the software point of view, because I'm extremely doubtful that it's a hardware failure

Yup, just checked your profile...

Or, barring that, what kind of information would be expected to be provided in a question on Ask Ubuntu

@MadaraUchiha I'm pretty sure it's a loose contact inside the cable.

Why does it not happen on Windows then?
I'd expect choppiness or at least brief unresponsive periods

When you reboot, and you reboot into Windows, does it magically start working again?
If you reboot, have you tried a cold reboot?

9:37 PM
As in, boot to windows, then boot back to Ubuntu?
Or just boot to Windows?

just to Windows

Whenever I boot to Windows, it works on Windows, always.

Also when it did not work on Ubuntu (seeing that you have to try 3 times?)

I assume by "cold" reboot you mean shutting down then powering back up?
I tried that too, yes, no apparent effect

Does the keyboard have a ⊞ Windows key?
there you have it… it doesn’t like linux ;D

9:39 PM
@dessert :D

It doesn't, actually

@MadaraUchiha Yes

The meta key is blank
More questions? :D

@MadaraUchiha In Ubuntu, you sometimes have to reboot 3 times for it to work, but when you reboot into Windows is works straight away, right?

Correct

9:40 PM
What's the output to xinput list

$ xinput list

@MadaraUchiha Gaming keyboard?

Indeed
On a previous installation of Ubuntu, I also had a specific driver (which allows, among other things, the control of the keyboards' LEDs and the such), and it still happened

You don't have any problems under Windows because there's a driver for it and there's a shitty one in the Kernel.
next time, try:
 rmmod atkbd ; modprobe atkbd reset=1

I'm expected to type that while the keyboard doesn't work? :D

9:43 PM
@MadaraUchiha yes, with the on-screen keyboard...

You mean, enable the on-screen keyboard, login, open terminal, and type that?
Probably with root?

@MadaraUchiha Just try.

Let's see if I can reproduce
brb

@MadaraUchiha after you get back, what kernel driver are you on and what's the brand and model of the keyboard?

@Fabby you really know your stuff

9:45 PM
Lady luck doesn't (or does? depending on your perspective) favor us today.
How do I test what kernel driver am I on?

@dessert That's effing old! one of the first drivers ever programmed. That's Linnus territory.

Also, keyboard is Corsair Gaming K70 LUX RGB Keyboard

uname -a

@Fabby on AT disks it could be found…

9:46 PM
@MadaraUchiha good kernel.

I literally installed 18.04 an hour ago.

@MadaraUchiha And still happening? Or gone since then?

Still happening.
I can't get it to reproduce now

Hrmpf...

9:47 PM
I'm guessing there's some hidden state I need to trigger in order for it to return
I hate bugs like that, I also hate it that I have no freaking clue where to look for indicators of what the problem is
Is there a log or something I can look at?

I had that on my previous installation

And still problems?

It had no effect, although I am going to install it nontheless

What keyboard layout are you using?

9:50 PM
Gotta have that wave effect :P
Standard QWERTY

QWERTY or
ah...
I was going to ask or ISRAELI QUERTY!
:D

This Israeli not funny :(

@MadaraUchiha Give me your address and I'm going to buy you the cheapest keyboard I can find and ship it to you and if that solves the problem, you owe me beers when I come diving in Eilat!

I'm still convinced is's a hardware problem that got solved in the Windows driver...
(I've had that before with a cheap gaming keyboard. Brought it back after a week...)
Can't remember the name but it was the cheapest rainbow keyboard I could find...
3 months ago.
maybe 4
@MadaraUchiha I can ship you AZERTY today...
>:-)

9:56 PM
I'm fairly sure I can flick a switch at the back of the keyboard and make it AZERTY

@MadaraUchiha :D

Swap keyboards with a friend for week...
Someone who has a normal keyboard.
@MadaraUchiha Stop that
:-) ;-) :-)
@MadaraUchiha Sorry man, that's the only thing I can think of: Hardware problem sorted in Windows driver...

So make a script on your desktop containing the rmmod atkbd ; modprobe atkbd reset=1 and use the on-screen keyboard to log in.
and see what that does and then come back and ping me.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

10:05 PM
@Fabby It does seem like there's a specific problem with this keyboard, I see a few GitHub issues opened about it
Very odd, I have the same keyboard at work and it caused no problems, and I keep the kernel there updated too

@MadaraUchiha yup. that's what the reset should help with.

Maybe it's the 17.10/18.04 move that screwed with it?
I have LTS at work

@MadaraUchiha he says he doesn't have another keyboard!

Still on 16.04

Swap both: it's a hardware problem...
@MadaraUchiha I'll bet you a bottle of champagne it's a hardware problem.
@MadaraUchiha Do you speak Yiddish?

10:23 PM
@Fabby No, I am not 70 years old.

kek

@MadaraUchiha :D :D :D
They got rid of the age in the profile, so cannot check.
@MadaraUchiha (You could be an old fart needing a gaming keyboard to see the keys)
:D ;-) :D

I love that GIF

total starbait

10:26 PM
bit it delivers

10:39 PM
@dessert And that is how you wind up on the opensuse music video playlist...

@RobotHumans and it’s worth it
you should however also try 2CELLOS

I'm debating about distributing my forex scraper, because when I put my yahoo stock precompute thing out in the discord stock rooms, they nerfed it. Like I didn't charge for it and didn't redistribute the data. I just gave out a harness. So, I'm hesitant a little now.
dueling cellos is nice. dueling pianos is also nice.
