Q: SSH prompt for password on Ubuntu 18.04, but password unknown because it was never set

Jacob NuttallI have been having a perplexing problem when I have been trying to use the SSH protocol to login in to a remote host. Here is an image of my problem: I am perplexed because no matter what password I put in (I would assume it would be my normal root password or something like that) I can not g...

Hmm... maybe it's because I'm using Wayland...

4:39 AM
I thought wayland was gutted - like removed from mainline. I can't find the story right now, but I could swear I read it.

4:54 AM
Fedora ships with it on by default.
(Yes, you read that right. I'm running Fedora now.)

RobotHumansWhat are some of the common chat items? I want to understand what people who are more familiar with other chat clients are trying to say to me.

I found this meta question very helpful more than once… ;)

Q: Ubuntu 18.04 taking too long to boot

KorliClear Ubuntu Server 18.04 LTS (not the live one) install (shell only). Software RAID 1 has been configured during the installation (swap and ext4 partitions). Boot up (time before login query) takes about 1min 30 seconds, which seems too long. I'm far from Linux-savvy person, so I'm kind of at ...

seriously why do people want to close everything as a dupe >____<

It only has a single close vote.

sure. I'm not talking about everyone :) It definitely had 2 close votes earlier. But what's bothering me now is OP being pushed to edit their question (to show it's not a dupe)

… and actually changes the question by doing that.

Q: md5 sum (fdupes) vs sha256sum - why different results - ubuntu server

sheikhnessI have a directory structure that I know contains a LOT of duplicate files. (the dir tree has 67K files with around 8K duplicates). Naturally, the duplicates are all same size in bytes and the same content but filenames are all completely different. When using fdupes /dir/path -rm I get only 125 ...

Q: How to deal with 404 error questions? (repository/installation related)

Aryo AdhiAs 18.04 is relatively new, not all repositories (including PPAs) are releasing their packages for Bionic. Still, there are constantly questions regarding 404 error while trying to install package(s) from PPAs. In short, I want to discuss: What to do with questions regarding 404 error on reposit...

Heh, posted a perl one liner.

:)
I don't understand this comment... before I ask dumb questions, does anyone else understand it...?
There should be if the OP can't wait for some reason. I experienced that I almost break my system because of that way of package installation. Probably, flagging that kind of question (as a duplicate) works, but it will take a lot of time to collate data of which installations are success and which aren't. — Aryo Adhi 13 mins ago

Trying to convince my manager(non tech guy) to push our servers to full compliance with PCI DSS requirements, HIPAA guidance and NIST guidelines, but I cant seem to write a non technical indepth explanation on why to upgrade our server to that area. Anybody got a simple way of explaning that?
My personal server is in compliance with PCI DSS requirements, HIPAA guidance and NIST guidelines: SSLScan of eurobytes.nl :D

@Zanna is it would you rather say “a -ls option” or “an -ls option”?

I have an interview tomorrow thru webex

Q: To run webex - firefox error

overexchangeAfter following the steps mentioned here, I see below errors after launching 32 bit firefox. /opt/webex/jre/bin$ file java java: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2, for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, BuildID[sha1]=c5e580c49759f72b674a6b...

Trying to resolve these errors

@dessert I prefer "an". I am not even sure what is correct in writing. In speaking, if the next sound is a vowel sound, folk will say "an", like "an LTS release", and if the next sound is a consonant sound, folk will say "a", like "a UFO". The reason for "an" is euphony. I usually write what is spoken in this regard. But I assume it is acceptable to write "a LTS release" "an UFO". Maybe we should ask ELU ^_^

A: When should I use "a" vs "an"?

nohatThere is a bizarre urban legend of sorts that you're "supposed to" use "an" if the head noun in the noun phrase it determines begins with a vowel sound, rather than the first word in the noun phrase, giving rise to claims that "an green apple" is somehow "technically" correct. Here is a blog post...

12:30 PM
@Zanna so you pronounce the characters one after one instead of speaking them as a word (/ləz/, /lɪz/ or something like that)?
@Zanna thanks btw! :)

12:55 PM
@dessert sorry, switched devices... yeah I say /'el'es/, I guess because it would be really awkward and sound like somebody's name if pronounced as a word. But I prnounce mv /mu:v/ haha and I call the - for options "minus" so ls -l in my head is /'el'es'maɪnəs'el/ XD

@Zanna Really? Huh, I always thought of it as em-vee

yeah, that makes way more sense
I think it's just me
I don't think calling that hyphen "minus" is at all sane or helpful either

I do the same

@Zanna I do the same

Probably because in German, "hyphen" would be "Bindestrich", which is waaaaay too long. Minus simply stays minus.

1:02 PM
haha el es Binestrich el XD

How do you guys “speak” rm?

arr em

@dessert makes sense. But in English sounds like a child's impression of a car

Wow, one could easily write a paper about that, especially how the mother tongue affects it. You usually only see command lines written, so there’s no “bad” influence – that’s a wonderful topic!

haha yeah!

@Zanna in German too, especially if iterated

1:08 PM
haha yeah

talking about iteration…
;)

wow I'm a social disaster

@Zanna Ah, that seems relatively common, actually. I think there was a U&L post on that

Q: Why do Unix-heads say "minus"?

Eric SmithA couple of weeks ago I attended a talk on Git by someone who seemed to be from a Windows background. I say "seemed to be" because he kept saying "dash" when referring to command-line options. I then recalled something that I found curious in my early days of learning Linux; that is, when refer...

I say minus too. As in "el ess minus el"

isn’t dash rather – (endash) or — (emdash) as opposed to hyphen/minus -?

Yes. Hence people calling it minus and not dash.

1:15 PM
oh, yeah – I should read answers.

@terdon that is interesting... can't think of anyone I heard saying it or reading it anywhere. I think it just sort of looked like a minus to me

oh, the + argument is quite good: xterm +hold vs. xterm -hold – plus vs. hyphen minus

set -x / set +x
although set -x in my head means "add some stuff" so I have to remember it's the opposite of what it "sounds" like

-x is the "normal" option, which enables things. +x is inverted and disables.

I always confuse them as well, I like --something, -s and --no-something more.

1:55 PM
@terdon "min teken" :=)
From the link in the link: % grapes. wtf?

@Rinzwind ???

2:10 PM
@Rinzwind that’s actually quite good, I think I’ll use that from now on :>

@Rinzwind Aaaah

funny German words there: @ strudel and & pretzel

@dessert - thanks for the tip of the hat there. right when I posted it, there was some discussion as to whether or not it was a valid community wiki style list question.

refer to this question pls....I have put screenshots of the pavucontrol as well

@AmagicalFishy Why? It’s in the repos, just do sudo apt install ffmpeg.

@dessert I'm working from a docker container and in my case it is not in the repos

@AmagicalFishy if you want to install a .deb file including the dependencies, rather use apt instead of dpkg: sudo apt install /absolute/path/to/package.deb

5:05 PM
although, maybe this is a better way to go about it: which repo is it? i'll just add the repo to souces.list from within the Dockerfile

@AmagicalFishy universe

excellent, lemme try that (tyty)

5:25 PM
@dessert That worked! thank you. i've been dealing w/ trying to get ffmpeg onto docker foreeeeeeever

@RishiC sorry I am of little help when it comes to sound inputs - I usually don't have a mic attached to my boxes and if I do it just works after been plugged in the mic input jack.

yeah making them... a middleman
"the middleman" should be "some middlemen"

@AmagicalFishy you’re welcome, now that was an easy one. ;)

Q: How to lodge disagreement with certain Review Test fails?

SDsolarIn Review, I usually pass the tests when they occur. The most common cause of failing is that I add a comment to a first-timer's question asking for clarification about what their goal was, or some such. So then after the fail, there is no way to lodge my disagreement with the test. Why d...
