@RobotHumans But I've been doing this intead:
mind, that's not quite typical gameplay. We picked the smallest map and packed the most people in we could just to see what would happen.

hey, I need some help to re install my audio drivers
I have Ubuntu 16.04 and I don't know how to re install my audio drivers

4:19 AM
@Seth - oh, that feels like descent.
is there mission style single/multi?

@RobotHumans Yep! Same dev team. They just can't call it Descent because the name was licensed under another company.
@RobotHumans Absolutely! It's still in early access (release date is May 31) but there's a full singleplayer campaign, singleplayer "challenge mode" (you vs hoards of robots) and multiplayer PvP.
Right now no coop or multiplayer CTF. It may come later though.

Awesome. I hope they do well. I'll check it out later. I hope single player delivers. That's my largest complaint with most modern "kickstarter" games. That they rely totally on PvP or mindless play with no mission system.

guys...please.....

@RobotHumans There are about 5 (iirc) of the singleplayer missions in the early access builds. Pretty good IMO. Brings back the old D1 terrors

can someone pls help me with re installing audio drivers on ubuntu 16.04

4:25 AM
@RishiC I don't know anything about audio drivers, sorry. Ask a question on the main site. That's your best bet.

I did ask on the main site....but it is dead AF

opened the tab so it's in my history. holding pattern at least until morning, but i'm glad to see it.
@RishiC if you don't get an answer in a few day ping Takkat. He's the resident audio sound subsystem wizard, but don't ping him superfluously. He's really good and we don't want to burn him out.

sure
thanks

Q: Re-install audio drivers on Ubuntu 16.04

RishiCI'm making a speech recognition code in python and I get an error saying "no default input device". On a forum it was suggested that I re-install all my audio drivers. But I don't know how to do that. So, how do I re-install all my audio drivers?

here

4:32 AM
@RishiC Well, like I said, I'm not an expert here, but I highly doubt reinstalling your audio drivers will fix that. Especially if audio works fine now
@RobotHumans Cool!

yeh...i think that too...but so far everything i've tried has failed

Reinstalling audio drivers won't fix that. Are you sure you have an input device at all? I've seen that happen if you use a USB device, but that's a bug. Some apps recognize hotplugged devices, but the OS doesn't declare them "default" necessarily.

yeah I have the comp's in built mic
which works

My usb headset for example hot-toggles with chrome, but not with the gmusic app I have on a cron job as a wake up alarm. Is it a pseudo built in device like the mic is paired to the webcam?
Only asking for clarity, so things you might add to your question. Not because I have a solution, I have the same sorts of problems. I just use things differently to get around it

i didn't understand you

4:41 AM
If I plug in USB headphones, chrome finds them and uses that headphone and mic.
gmusic app does not.

i see
well my web cam gets the in built mic just fine
i tried doing print(sr.Microphone.list_microphone_names()) but it just returned an empty list
in python
I have a usb sound card and mic too, but they don't get recognised either

If your mic is paired to your webcam it may only work sometimes (when the webcam is turned on or not). I'ld add to the question where you can and can't use it. Does it work with audacity? Does it work with google hangouts? Simple things to make things more "troubleshoot-able". In my areas of expertise, I often don't get enough details to help people, so I'm trying to help you find the right details to provide.
Like, on my laptop, the mic and webcam show up as USB devices. So, if USB doesn't get recognized, for some apps, I'ld be dead in the water.

i see
it works with audacity as well
I don't use hangouts or skype so i don't know if it works with them

You may want to take a look at pavucontrol and make sure it's selected as the default. You may also want to add that it works with audacity to your question so you don't get "does it work at all" in your comments.

i see
ok i'll do that

4:51 AM
Be prepared. You're going to get "then you don't need to reinstall audio drivers" comments. It's just a thing. It'll turn out fine in the end. Just give it a couple days. AU just isn't on-call expert support.

i see
anyways...thanks for the help so far
if I don't get an answer in a day or 2 i'll ping Takkat

I would check to see what input devices are in pavucontrol though. And yes, if anyone has an answer off the top of their head, it's him.
Edited the question verbage. Maybe it will help.
Title only, so if you get another edit for content of the question to take out the how do I reinstall drivers, you'll get another bump.

saw that
thanks
how do i post pics here?
I took a screenshot of the pavucontrol
In input devices i got 2 options

Q: How do you upload a screenshot?

BJsgoodlifeI just installed Kazam, and it looks very simple to use. I want to use it here on askubuntu. I figured out how to take a screenshot, I just don't know how to upload it. Does anyone know how to do this?

one was internal microphone and the other was microphone(unplugged)
no no i meant post pic in the chat

5:06 AM
If you don't have the upload button, you don't have enough rep yet. You have to put it on imgur then hotlink it.

o

just paste the link to imgur

ok...signing up or imgur right now
here

edited those in for you.

?

5:14 AM
take a look at your question.

oh I see

for some reason your "unplugged mic" is registering input while your built-in is not. might be part of your problem - just looking at the screenshots. sounds like a bug, but I'll let it ride. someone might have a solution.

yep
anyways...i have some college stuff to do now,,,i'll follow up with the mic problem later

5:51 AM
@Seth haha what would it be called
@TheWanderer sooo many times, but over time I've managed to reduce the distance I get before I realise it's happening. Now I usually wake myself up after a couple of paragraphs of gently running my eyes over the words while thinking about what's for breakfast

Q: External money reward

ubashuI found this post. The OP states "A 30k Geek (GeekCash) reward is given to you after the job is complete." I wasn't sure what this meat, so I commented "What does "What does a 30k Geek (GeekCash) reward is given to you after the job is complete mean?". The user replied with "@ubashu: Yes, you can...

8:18 AM
flagged as spam :P

8:43 AM
Why?
What makes you think it's the OP's product?
They want to set up a repo for it, right?
@Rinzwind ^

9:23 AM
@terdon the website linked in OP’s profile (“Working at codequs.com”) has a GeekCash launch announcement and is heavily advertising the cryptocurrency with popups – I’m with Rinzwind here, I consider this spam and OP is at least working for the company behind the product.

9:47 AM
@dessert Why spam? It's a question asking what seems like a perfectly valid question about setting up a PPA.
They weren't even linking to the geekcash site on the question anywhere.
There's nothing wrong with asking a question about your work, is there?
The only offense here was offering a monetary reward for an answer. But that's easily fixed by an edit.

should there be a comment to tell OP that offering a reward isn't allowed?

I guess. I put it in the edit reason, but a comment would be better. Hang on.
Done

thanks :)
is it maybe a dupe of How do I create a PPA? or is there a specific issue...

@Zanna Dunno. I don't know the first thing about PPAs or repository setup, so I can't judge at all.

same :( that's why I'm asking. I guess I should post a comment... done

Q: Always use full Ubuntu version numbers

MelebiusMore often than I wish I come across a post (mostly a question) which uses wrong version numbers of Ubuntu. Examples: Ubuntu 17 to 18 upgrade, wont log in Ubuntu 17 and hibernate? How to install USB-to-Serial driver on Ubuntu 17? Ubuntu 16 not detecting Windows on the hard drive despite partit...

12:27 PM
@Rinzwind yeah, but why does that make it spam?
I mean, yes, the OP seems to be working for that company, but it really looks like they just want to make a PPA. And they made the mistake of offering money, but I don't see why that makes it spam.

@terdon oh he also is the one that made it >:)
and the definition of spam includes advertising.
what he is doing
and i think I also read somewhere you HAVE to disclose any relation to software on AU(?)

@Rinzwind I would say that only really makes sense when you are trying to get people to use your tool. The OP hadn't even linked to the site or anything. Just to the github releases. Dunno, it seems like a reasonable question and a useful one, the only fault was that the OP tried to pay us to answer.

@terdon I have seen enough on the web to believe he does >:)
but anyone is free to ignore my flag >:-D

You know what drives me crazy?
When a travel agent's website offers you a price and you come back a few days later and it has increased BUT YOU STILL GET THE OLD PRICE WITH INCOGNITO MODE.
I mean, that's a little bit sneaky IMHO.

@NathanOsman Travel agents? Those still exist?
Also, son of a. . . ! That's really sneaky!

Hi

I am trying to simply echo something to /proc/sys/kernel/printk on my machine so I can see my debug messages, but I can't echo to that file apparently
$ sudo echo 8 > /proc/sys/kernel/printk
bash: /proc/sys/kernel/printk: Permission denied
Does anybody know why that's the case? I didn't use to have that on other devices/machines IIRC

@terdon I don't usually use them but they currently have the cheapest price.

@NathanOsman TIL
@NathanOsman I heard prices can also vary depending on the OS you are using, eg people using OSX might see higher prices than people using Windows

Oh wow, that's even dirtier.

4:49 PM
@NathanOsman Seriously? Actual agents? You don't mean an online ticket selling service?
@traducerad Yes you did. The sudo only affects the echo command, not the redirection.

Q: Redirecting stdout to a file you don't have write permission on

Michael MrozekWhen you attempt to modify a file without having write permissions on it, you get an error: > touch /tmp/foo && sudo chown root /tmp/foo > echo test > /tmp/foo zsh: permission denied: /tmp/foo Sudoing doesn't help, because it runs the command as root, but the shell handles redirecting stdout a...

@terdon Nah, it's online.

@terdon thx! didn't expect that to be the error.

@NathanOsman Ah, OK. I thought you meant actual travel agents and they're a dying breed unless you want a package tour or something.
@traducerad you're welcome. It's a common confusion.

@dessert sorry no. There is totally no need to mess with permissions in /usr/sbin/ The S is for superuser so intended to be root only.
the 33 answer is the way to go

5:42 PM
@Rinzwind I agree it may not be the perfect general approach, but it’s still a valid way to achieve the goal, and the answer is pretty well-written in terms of warnings and explanations. I’d rather let the users decide based on that…
@traducerad use tee instead:
 echo 8 | sudo tee /proc/sys/kernel/printk

@dessert yup thx, I was indeed adviced to use tee. I am not used to use tee
and didn't expect that to be the issue

6:00 PM
@traducerad The main issue is that you are running a command with sudo privileges, but redirecting the output is completely independent of the command, so the sudo doesn't affect it. That's a shell feature and you're still running your normal shell session. So yeah, either use tee or sudo -i to open a root shell

On a tangent line I am always surprized by the number of developers that never saw the sudo updatedb command
I use it all the time
Am I the only one?

Q: Why does "Community" bump years-old questions about now-obsolete versions to homepage?

Zeiss IkonThis question was just bumped to homepage (appr. 14:30 EDT 2018-05-21). It's About an EOL LTS version that lost support years ago, specific to a kernel version that's a whole generation older (3.x versus current 4.x) than what we have now. If this were asked new now, it would be instantly close...

@traducerad I don’t really use locate, so yeah, I never use updatedb either.

@dessert how come? Find is way too slow imo

@traducerad not for what I do with it, no – I neither have to deal with lots of files nor with directory structures I don’t know. If not with -exec, I use tree more than find I suppose.
