Hello. Any help on this one? askubuntu.com/questions/1093615/…

7 hours later…
8:04 AM
@TheWanderer haha yeah I hate PETA

8:21 AM
@gracious1 there's some sort of UEFI issue with Acer machines. Only oldfred seems to understand it properly
might not be your issue - did you try making the USB again?
I'm not at all suggesting you did it wrong. USB sticks are just somewhat unreliable. Even a new one could be faulty or there might have been some write error or the file got damaged on its way to you. Not very likely but people do sometimes resolve this kind of issue that way

heh, that's true...
one reason I switched to a IODD
(also I'm lazy and having a device that basically turns any iso into a bootable, emulated usb optical drive is magical)

IODD eh? covertly looks it up

@Zanna its a fancy enclosure

oh yeah?

this is the model I have
basically you can boot VHDs and isos directly off it

8:29 AM
looks fancy

also does hardware encryption with a passcode

@JourneymanGeek very neat
@JourneymanGeek wow

Every single system I own now was installed (linux) or updated (windows) using it

$79 is quite steep but I guess it's worth it

IMO? second best/most fun hardware purchase I have made
@Zanna it mounts ISOs and VHDs natively

8:30 AM
:)

there's probably a small arm computer inside ._.

haha yeah probably
or a "very cooperative gnome"

Ya, you could probably buy a cheapie for a fiver

as Khan Academy described enzymes

8:31 AM
@JourneymanGeek ooh

so, workflow for a linux install?
download the ISO. Copy it over to my "_ISO" folder.
plug pick the ISO I want off the screen... (yes it has a screen)...
boot from it on whatever PC I want.
will also let me boot a VHD (for windows 2go or linux) but the performance isn't all that great

brilliant stuff

yup. As you can tell, I'm a fan ;)
Zalman sold an older version - its pricier and dosen't do the VHD thing
So... I haven't used rufus in a while

I use sgdisk to make bootable USBs

ah
my day to day PC is still windows.

8:35 AM
so if that was the 2nd most fun thing... what was the most fun thing?

@Zanna I'm glad you asked.

Q: Ubuntu performance is too slow on "Vmware workstation 14player''

Zunaira ZafarI have installed Ubuntu on Vmware workstation 14player on windows 10 last month with a help of tutorial on youtube.First two or three days it was working fine no problem in performance or anything but then it got so slow that it wont even open .I reinstalled it but still it didn't work.How much s...

I bought a 4 port 'industrial' PC
and built a ubuntu based router.

routers are a total complete and utter mystery to me
I do not understand any aspect of networking at all

@Zanna well, the basics are simple

8:37 AM
I should really make the effort one of these days to get my head round it. I can only really understand things by actually trying to make or do something...

The secret is understanding 2 things...

oooh

1. Linux has all the moving bits you need for a basic router
2. a consumer router is actually 2-3 things
so I literally started with 2 things
arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/04/… this guide (which I adapted a bit to taste here journeymangeek.com/?p=196 )
an ubuntu purist will do UFW ;)

must have a look...

so... you have 2 interfaces. One interface to the internet, one to the internal network. You have packet forwarding (in kernel), you have a DNS server (optional) DHCP server (for giving out IPs) - DNSmasq is a dream for this...
then some basic firewall rules to tell your firewall "Hey, if a client is talking to an external system, please pass on the messages"
quite honestly - I just adapted those rules from basically everywhere.
Ipv6 and hostapd were a pain
but you don't really need ipv6, and the secret to hostapd is most of the resources on the internet suck and you really need to use the stock config file and adjust it...

8:42 AM
hmm

I literally started with 0 experience with doing this sorta thing - took me about 2 weeks to wrap my head around it (and you can do the initial setup with your router-box hanging off your current network)
I think J1900 celerons are what most folks use - I went with a core i3 ULV cause I intend to hang a few additional resources off this.
(like I said, really fun XD)
and the important part is its fast
I can do gigabit line speeds on wan.

ooh :)

also its flexibility - I have a few tools for monitoring (netplan is awesome) and I run a different speed test software from repos cause its better
I'm also toying with a VPN and I can run anything - and possibly take advantage of AES-NI
The one place where it falls short is wifi (I use my old router in a purely AP role)
but I could also use something like an ubiquity and run the controller on it

Q: Finding duplicate files and moving ONE copy to another drive, deleting all other copies

MarcActually I am trying to do two different things.... First off is to make a copy (onto my travel HDD) of all the video files, photos and documents, excluding any duplicates. So there is only one copy on my travel HDD. This would have to be able to see into many levels of folders (ntfs file syst...

Oh, also gives you the option for connection bonding, folks have set up multi-waned/homed connections and since I'm running ubuntu 18.04 at least a decade of software support...
cause most consumer routers have crappy firmware updates

9:08 AM
thanks a lot for the tips and inspiration @JourneymanGeek ^_^

XD. As I said, most fun
I love my PC builds but they finish so fast.

I have recently thought of a couple of tasks that will motivate me to get into networking and understand it haha. That's at the top of my list of things to do when I finish all the really urgent things :/

Well , there's a few concepts I still don't get...
I don't bother to remember subnetting ._.
and vlans are still a complete and utter mystery

sounds like a creamy dessert to me

but I'd need a managed switch to really do it

9:14 AM
unfortunately I now have to try to get my head around acid dissociation constants
not fun at all

eh chemistry

10:55 AM
@dessert You're asking the wrong person. You should ask @JacobVlijm

Q: Realtek rtl8821ce wifi drivers for Ubuntu Budgie

timw99I tried installing the endlessm and tomaspinho drivers because they're the only ones being suggested on here and the rest of the internet but I haven't been able to compile them. Does anyone here have any different options I might look into?

12:48 PM
@dessert because python rocks :D

1:30 PM

Q: Using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on Chromebook with crouton

user312533I am planning on buying a Chromebook and using crouton (https://github.com/dnschneid/crouton) to install Linux on it. I want to use a normal install of Ubuntu 18.04 'Bionic Beaver' (preferably the "minimal" version). I have never done this before, so my main question is: How close is this to what...

2:00 PM
Can I ask about ubuntu native (just plug it in) hardware support here?
I didn't see the word "hardware" on the tour
and if this isn't the correct place, where should I ask
oh maybe I have to ask this on the main page and then link to it on meta since I don't have enough reputationpoints or something...

@USERID_UNK this is perfectly on topic if you ask me

3:03 PM
Based on the feedback, I'll ask about a specific piece of hardware then, rather than a class of hardware.
I asked on meta, because this is often an issue I have, not extending only to this specific question.
In this case, I am wondering about the availability of a non-wacom drawing tablet with video display.
There are several I've been reading through, for example, the GT220,I have found conflicting information about ones such as the Huion GT-220, but their official support says it doesn't work. And I've read posts that say it both does and doesn't. Plus there are two versions, V1 and V2, and there seems like there are actually different makes within these. Possibly all with different support.

Q: Meta (meta) question, hardware support as a question on ask ubuntu

USERID_UNK I have a question about my Ask Ubuntu post: Hardware support on topic? I would have added this earlier, but it says "You can only post once every 40 minutes." Here is the question: Can I ask about ubuntu native (just plug it in) hardware support here? I didn't see the word "hardware" on t...

hey guys. i installed lubuntu as dual boot with windows. however ,i can't select it when i'm booting up the laptop. what should i do?
how do i make it bootable? i now used usb to launch lubuntu and opened gparted. anything i should do there?

I suggest you run boot repair to get the info summary
there could be any number of things that went wrong. Not enough info to advise further - but the info summary should provide plenty

@Zanna Thanks a lot. I am getting a message now. Do you want to have all grub 2 files removed
it seems like i shouldn't accept it?
but boot repair i think is suggesting to do that
i pressed yes, lets hope for the best...

I should have said don't let it do recommended repair
just want the info summary
but maybe it will work shrug

5:34 PM
@mrSuperEvening We just need the boot repair info posted as a question on the site so we can have a look.

@Fabby @Zanna Thank you guys. Here's the report: pastebin.com/dp9HRdev
i tried what boot-repair suggested, but it didn't help

6:02 PM
@mrSuperEvening Please post a question on the site so we can answer.
include the exact steps you took to arrive at this situation and then ping me with a link to the question.

Reading and editing.
@mrSuperEvening Fresh install?

yes, both of them fresh... spent hours on this, going insane...

No worries.
Reading.

thank you so much

6:07 PM
@mrSuperEvening Easy fix:
=> No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda.
 => Syslinux MBR (5.00 and higher) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb.

sda1: __________________________________________________________________________

    File system:       vfat
    Boot sector type: Windows 7/2008: FAT32
    Boot sector info: No errors found in the Boot Parameter Block.

    Boot files:        /EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi
                       /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgr.efi
You installed Windows in EUFI mode and Lubuntu in BIOS mode.
Answering.

after i ran boot-repair thing, now windows don't start. i can only start lubuntu via usb try lubuntu live

@mrSuperEvening Did you have boot-repair remove anything?

nope
yes, grub 2 fields

Well, looks like a reinstall to me then...
Sorry!!!
Boot-repair doesn't like mixed UEFI / BIOS systems and screws up at least one of them.
(depending in which mode you are)
@mrSuperEvening P.S. after you've installed Win10, use CloneZilla to make a system backup of your working system.
Actually, I'm going to reboot and make a full system backup as well as the October update came in a few days ago.

ahhhh... okay...
how do i install lubuntu in uefi mode btw?
i will reinstall everything tomorrow

6:17 PM
@mrSuperEvening lemme check.

6:55 PM
@Fabby uptime: 1 day, 22:42 hours

7:13 PM
@Videonauth Woohoo!!! Congrats!

@Videonauth How the mighty have fallen: Happy with 1 day uptime!

What sort of people want to setup a proxy server (which isn't particular a beginner's task) and at the same time are not skilled enough to replace two occurances of the digit 2 with a 3 and a 4? I don't get that.

Q: Reverse proxy listening to multiple ports, Nginx

A SinghI want to proxy pass all requests coming from a series of ports into single port and different IP, using Nginx. I have the following config: server { listen 3333; server_name test.in *.test.in; location / { proxy_pass http://10.1.1.2:5479/; include /etc/nginx/proxy_...

Sorry. I'm nasty again.

@Fabby ^ the culprit

@PerlDuck Reading...

@Fabby Read the suggested dupe! And compare them.

@PerlDuck Just voted to dupe and was going to do that next.
@PerlDuck What do you expect of someone who can't even remember their own login???
:D :D :D
which mod is on shift?
@PublicVoid you can read, but you cannot write until you get 2 more rep...
Huh! on a saturday night... going to flag for moderator attention.
@PerlDuck Or they are students of the same professor...

@Fabby Well, it's not exactly a dupe. One is about "Which keys do I need to press on my calculator to add 2 and 3?" while the other rather is "Which keys … to add 2 and 4?" But if someone cannot even apply such a clear solution to his own problem, then I tend to say "You're in the wrong job"

@PerlDuck I can say that about... 90-95% of management in my (IT) company...
Most managers and directors have no fucking clue...
Though our CEO is quite technical still.

7:36 PM
The proposed dupe is three years old and the text is almost identical. However.
@Fabby Our management is quite OK. They have other skills which I, for instance, do not have. Making decisions, for example.

@PerlDuck >:-) Do you know what I do in RL?

@Fabby No. Enjoying french fries, I'd guess ;-)

@Zanna Just heard the strange construction “somebody is to make something adjective” – what exactly does that mean? Is that AE?

hmm
it means somebody has the intention or obligation to make something like that

do you use this construction?

I'm sure I use it in writing sometimes
sounds formal
I guess in speaking I would say somebody is going to make something adjective or somebody has to make something adjective

nice :>

it seems more likely in a conditional structure... like... if somebody is to make something adjective, she will need...
so there I guess "is to" means "will have the ability to"

Q: Monitors keep swapping after the machine sleeps for a while

casolorzI'm on Ubuntu 18.04.1 Usually if I turn off my machine and turn it on then the left and right monitors will be correct, but if I let the machine sleep overnight then they'll swap. If I just lock the screen and unlock it then it will be fine, it is only after long sleeps that the issue happens. ...
