Q: Bash: Use raw binary in variable as executable?

user321517I'd like to create a variable containing binary data, then execute in a command. Example: #!/bin/bash var="$(cat /bin/sleep)" "$var" 9999

Q: Different ways to execute a binary?

user321532Are there more ways of executing Unix binaries? Using echo as an example: $ /bin/echo "test" test $ cd /bin/ $ ./echo "test" test $ eval echo "test" test

This was too funny not to share, even though it has nothing to do with Ubuntu whatsoever. :P

Q: Boot/systemd problem in Ubuntu

MilliwaysI have Ubuntu MATE 16.04.5 running on Raspberry Pi. I did a apt update/upgrade to install 18 upgraded packages but the system failed on reboot. It entered emergency mode and on entering Ctl-D I could boot as normal and everything works as normal! The only problem I could see is is dependencies ...

@NathanOsman the movies he plays is are made using Ubuntu :P

@dessert while I was trying to sleep and not having any success, I was thinking about this
I might have misunderstood what about that construction you found odd
but I what came into my mind was a line from the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, "/mə'mɑ:/ why do you keep winking at me? What am I to do?"
I can't imagine anyone saying that, at least in my dialect (we'd say "what am I supposed to do?" "what do you want me to do?" "what do you expect me to do?"). It sounds archaic. But it's very understandable
there was another instance of that form of question that stuck in my mind from the translation of a dialogue in a book I have for learning Tamil, "Am I to bring thing1 or thing2?" I don't think anyone would say that in my dialect either; we'd say "shall I bring thing1 or thing2?" but I can see they chose that translation because it's similar to the original; of course there's no equivalent of that strange modal "shall"
am probably talking complete nonsense now, but, it's Sunday, so nobody will mind, hopefully XD

1 hour later…
10:38 AM
@Zanna thank you very much! :) I was wrong there, the construction is not “so. is to make sth. adjective” but rather just “to be to do sth.”

10:58 AM
Ah good, that's what I thought was the unusual part, {to be} + infinitive, the rest of your example being context
:)

@ByteCommander Have you seen this: askubuntu.com/q/1093582/504066 ?

@Fabby Hey again! I am now uploading this version on usb, you think it should work now?
alternate version of lubuntu

12:34 PM
@mrSuperEvening Does Win10 work as intended already?
(always install W10 first)

win7* - yep, it is working. also, i can see ubuntu option when i press esc on booting

If yes: did you take a backup of that already?

so i think i will try to do this: askubuntu.com/questions/139966/…
use easycb

@mrSuperEvening Nope: that's commercial (and $$$) software
(if you want to change something: free just to look)
@mrSuperEvening What's the brand of laptop again?

the thing is, i tried to use uefi version, but when i try to install it, the whole window is messed up
hp
it's very old laptop
that's why i want to install lubuntu for my friend

12:36 PM
@mrSuperEvening Then don't install W10 if it's very old.
Just install lubuntu.

i installed windows 7

forget about W7

they need photoshop

@mrSuperEvening Wine.

i will try that, but they want windows 7 just in case

12:37 PM
@mrSuperEvening How much RAM does the thing have?

@mrSuperEvening Xubuntu and wine.
4G is enough.
Win7 needs 6 GB nowadays with all the patches.

it is running, not perfectly, but they need windows 7 unfortunately...

/shrug
@mrSuperEvening Good luck.

thanks a lot again

12:42 PM
YW.
@mrSuperEvening You should change your username because in chat I always think you're MrSuperEvil...

Q: Ubuntu Server 18.04.1 Netplan and UFW

soundconjurerOk, so I want to make a router using Ubuntu Server 18.04 ( already have the hardware and it all works, I have IPfire currently on it). I’ve looked at all the router distros and they seem rather limited in scope. Sources The article: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/04/the-ars-guide-to-build...

this is actually something I might try to beat into working

Q: how to disable filelight showing snap applications?

Alfredo SerafiniI'm using linux ubuntu 16-04, and filelight as my favourite tool to inspect disk usage. Recently, installing some snap packages, I see them showed as they were different units on filelight... do somebody has the same problem, and do you have any suggestion to disable this weird behaviour?

For the human that should translate ufw rules to firewalld rules?
> * enp1s0 is my external interface
* enp1s0 is internal.

hey guys, is there anyway to force load ubuntu bios instead of windows?

One of the two should be 2

i tried clicking f10 and then changing loading order, but there's no ubuntu there
ubuntu grub * not bios

4:09 PM
@mrSuperEvening Your question doesn't make sense.

@mrSuperEvening Dropping into an efi shell and doing the NVRAM setup yourself if HP refuses efibootmgr commands
(unless you haven't tried efibootmgr yet)

how would i begin sorry?

@mrSuperEvening Start here:

A: How to point to GRUB instead of windows loader?

Rod SmithTry the following: Boot to Linux. Open a Terminal window. Type sudo efibootmgr -o 1,2. In theory, this should set up Linux (Boot0001 in the efibootmgr output) as the first item in the boot list, followed by Windows (Boot0002). Unfortunately, some computers (notably many HP models) have broken...

sudo efibootmgr -o 1,2
is it safe to run this?
i have hp though, ahhhh

4:13 PM
only when efibootmgr commands do not work should you go a level deeper (pure efi shell)
@mrSuperEvening It depends on your UEFI hardware and I don't have an HP, so the only answer anyone can give you is:
efibootmgr > savelist.txt
then try...

to try run this command?
on ubuntu?

It depends... On my machine it would be dangerous:
efibootmgr
BootCurrent: 0000

BootOrder: 0000,0002,2001,2002,2003
Boot0000* rEFInd Boot Manager

Boot0003* Unknown Device:
Boot0004* ubuntu
Boot2001* EFI USB Device
Boot2002* EFI DVD/CDROM
Boot2003* EFI Network

i should have probably installed linux first, then windows... i don't get why this is complicated to achieve such simple task

(unknown device are my first 2 M2 SSDs)
@mrSuperEvening That doesn't work: Windows just wipes Linux.
@mrSuperEvening Read the docs and understand what's going on and then do it.
UEFI works differently from BIOS which you've known for all of your life.

````BootCurrent: 0005
@mrSuperEvening it's a mess.
start with:
efibootmgr --remove-dups
then show again.
i did that, and it returns the same thing
efibootmgr --verbose
i wonder if i should switch to windows and try this: easyuefi.com/index-us.html ...
how many disks (excluding CD/DVD-ROM, USB drive) does this machine have?
just one pretty sure
4:27 PM
Like I said: your NVRAM is a mess.
2003 in the boot order doesn't make sense as there is no 2003, so that's one to remove already.
can i somehow make ubuntu first?
Yes, but we need to know what we're doing.
sudo efibootmgr -o 4?
Before you do something, you need to know what you're doing: what's the difference between 0004 and 0005?
Maybe it's 0005.
both of them work (when i press esc > f10)
so if any loads first before windows loader, that would be great
4:31 PM
I can't remember what the difference is between RC and noRC
OK.
In that case:
efibootmgr --bootorder 2001,2002,0004,0006
(You still want to be able to boot from USB and DVD is something horrible goes wrong)
then do another efibootmgr --verbose
it still booted windows first... :(
I never told you to reboot.
im sorry!
again: efibootmgr --bootorder 2001,2002,0004,0006
then: efibootmgr --verbose
everything the same as before, expect order is correct now
4:37 PM
Go here
@Zanna man bash (under EXPANSION/Parameter Expansion) says that in parameter expansion “word is subject to tilde expansion, parameter expansion, command substitution, and arithmetic expansion.”, and variable expansion is a type of parameter expansion
so
${path/#~\//$HOME\/}
becomes
yeah but why does parameter expansion work but tilde expansion doesn't?
${path/#~\//'/home/dessert'\/}
first
because not the parameter itself, but word is expanded – $path gets expanded to its content and that’s all
sorry dessert, I am not understanding right now, but I'm really upset about something completely external to AU. I'll take a look later :)
get well soon :)
4:49 PM
thanks <3
@Fabby basically the core firewalld commands and ufw config are the same
So the firewalld commands I ran should work in UFW
@JourneymanGeek Ah!
