@cl-netbox eh, it would have helped if the mods were asked before you folks did your thing for a long time.. Fixing what was wrong will get my support.
I am going to end up saying too much if I continue, so peace out for now.

@cl-netbox What shog says is... kinda the law. And shog rarely turns up to tell people this sort of thing personally. And unlike mods, CMs have a lot more visibility than we do with things like that.

@jokerdino yeah, I absolutely agree - that would have been a good idea ... then there would have been a chance to hear both sides of the story ... By the way, one of the reasons why I "moved on" after what happened was that you were very kindly asking me to "stick around" ! :) Hope that you appreciate my work for AU (a little bit) though ... I think I'm doing some helpful stuff here ... :)
@jokerdino ha ... yes of course peace ! :)
@JourneymanGeek I was in a management position for a very long time and what I said was "kinda the law" too, but I would never ever have handled any similar situation this way ... only saying it because you told me ... anyway, the thing is done and through ... :)

@cl-netbox I mean, essentially in my entire time as a mod, we've only had this sort of thing happen 2-3 times, and no one ever got a polite warning from him. Most of the time its suspensions all around.
And as I said, they have MUCH better tools for these things than we do, and there's a certain implicit level of trust.
and essentially, I'd trust shog or any one of the CMs with things like this
I've almost never had one get in our way when it comes to running the site

12:21 PM
/facepalm
I just misread "ruining the site"

@ByteCommander no, that was correct

@JourneymanGeek you are a mod as well ? Where, also on a SE site ? :)

@JourneymanGeek so you are a Windows expert ? :)

@cl-netbox I'm platform agnostic

12:25 PM
@JourneymanGeek I don't do much in Windows anymore ... only when it comes to supporting people who (still) use it. :)

@cl-netbox lets see, right now...
windows, fedora, ubuntu, windows windows, openelec....

@JourneymanGeek I use centos / fedora / redhat / ubuntu :)

I really need to try to answer more on AU ;p

@JourneymanGeek hahaha :D

and I actually mean answer ;p
(One of my early tricks on SU was just banging out an answer a day)

12:29 PM
@JourneymanGeek wow ... what do I see there ? more than 100 thousand points ! Congrats man ! :)

@cl-netbox I am getting a box of swag for it ;p
including the legendary SE mug apparently

@JourneymanGeek really ? nice ! :)

@cl-netbox Its kind of a special milestone ;p

@JourneymanGeek Well done ... really really well done ! :)

I'm also working at 10K on MSE next

12:32 PM
@JourneymanGeek MSE ? ah ... Meta ...

meta stackexchange
I want trusted user there so I can read deleted complaints about me XDXDXD

@JourneymanGeek you'll get this done fast - I'm sure :) But why should someone complain ?

I actually thought I'd hit that before I hit SU 100K
@cl-netbox as a mod, sometimes you do the right things for the wider community, not the thing that makes one person happy
wait what?
I can read it?

@JourneymanGeek yes that's the way it works :)

this person was unhappy ;p

12:36 PM
@JourneymanGeek what can you read ? :)

oh, deleted question
might be cause I answered it, but I wasn't aware I could

@JourneymanGeek as a mod with 100000 points I guess you can see everything :)

lol
naw, I'm a normal user everwhere else
@jokerdino could totally suspend my fuzzy ass on AU ;p

@JourneymanGeek Oh? I thought they stopped doing that after everyone and their sister passed 100k on SO.
Cool! I'll be crossing the 100k mark on U&L any day now!

@terdon expect stuff then!

12:39 PM
@terdon You'll get some very special extra swag I think ... :D

You pretty much get an e mail the same day, I think

Don't need extra swap, I have 32G of RAM on my laptop! :P

@terdon the last 2k or so... is so damned painfully slow

It's my last milestone to reach. . . :(

@terdon typo ! already corrected ! :D

12:40 PM
@terdon I seem to recall there's a 250k milestone ;p
I just want to overtake John T ;p

There is?
@JourneymanGeek You should. cough

A: Replacement for broken mug?

animusonAll of our mugs that go out with 100k and 250k swag packages come with a limited lifetime warranty! Not really, but we appreciate you all enough that we'd happily replace it if it gets lost or broken. We do have your support ticket requesting a new one - we're just a bit backlogged at the moment...

Isn't the imgur/aws issue fixed by now? I'm getting a broken image there.

@terdon I wrote an answer today ... first it was denied to upload images ... then it was allowed, but pictures were not visible ... I uploaded them again ... can you see them -> askubuntu.com/questions/888557/… ? I'm not sure ... I am on firefox in fedora right now. :)

Anybody need a simple Mail migration software?

12:45 PM
@cl-netbox Thanks... I don't want to come across as overly-sensitive in my comments when someone negatively criticizes an answer that way.

I've been having some glitchiness all day so I probably wouldn't notice ;p

well if you do to bad, because its still in Alpha...
Only shows information about the mailboxes....

@WinEunuuchs2Unix You're welcome ! :)

@terdon did you comment on the encrypted password changes I did to rm password answer? I want to make sure it fits what you were looking for: askubuntu.com/questions/888458/…

Can you see the screenshots in the answer @JourneymanGeek @terdon @WinEunuuchs2Unix ? They are essential for the answer ... especially because it is an answer for panda ! :)

12:48 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix No, I just upvoted :)
@cl-netbox yes

@terdon okay ... good ... thanks ! :)

@terdon Well always grateful for upvote of course.. thanks :) But I was wondering if md5sum encryption was good enough or something like rsa-64 or md256sum (whatever!) should be used instead. I picked the easiest method.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Oh, md5 is (apparently) crap, but I don't think that's a big issue in this case. The whole approach is absurdly insecure anyway (no fault of yours, it's what the OP wants).
Sure, you could use sha512sum instead of md5sum but meh, up to you.
I'm probably the least qualified person to give pointers on encryption and security though. I know enough not to have a password in plaintext but anything more complex than that, you'll have to ask someone else.
I think ThomasWard is a security type.

@ThomasWard is the dark lord of security :p ^^^
K have to run... bye all have a great day/night.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Same for you ! :) See you ... :)

ohai, good meowning @Serg
I still haven't slept, but I think the exam went successfully

@ByteCommander good job ! byte legions can be proud of you as.commander salutes in binary
@TheXed exactly

yay the app works!
it's hella slow but it works

@Zacharee1 java and slow ?
totally never heard of that

@Serg so are you still at work?

Well I am glad you got your friend consoled, and your nosebleed plugged...

sucky situation

@ByteCommander good to read that exam went successfully ... Hi Sergiy ! :)
@Zacharee1 not very nice ... :( Hi @Zacharee1 ! :)

yelloo

@Zacharee1 which Q&A ? link please :)

3:58 PM
pretty sure you've already seen it askubuntu.com/questions/815591/…

@Zacharee1 no I didn't ... DVs compensated : 2 UVs from me now ! :)

:D
yay for asynchronous methods!

@Zacharee1 not very nice ... this is a part of what I am always talking about : negativity on AU ... who the hell downvotes such a Q & A ? I try my best to provide "thinking and acting positively" ... my UVs are fully deserved for your good (or better GREAT) work ! :)

hey all
so, I'm trying to bind a certain combination of keys to λ
currently using debian i3, but still
I've tried a few things, and I'm probably completely overlooking something

i'm going to say the obvious and suggest using U&L instead

4:12 PM
so I think it's a good idea to give up on trying to make it work on a very low level, and use some kind of utility that allows you to specify what happens after a certain sequence of keys is pressed

because Debian != Ubuntu
(just saying)

yeah, sure, but the question is about using a utility :)
still, not the same, but not that different
can anyone suggest any that would do this kind of thing?
I'm not even sure what to google

@ThomasWard not =! ? hahaha :)
@ThomasWard (just laughing) :D

@towc Will Ctrl+Shift+u then 03bb do?

λ oh wow
I didn't even know you could do that
is there a way to make it shorter?

4:25 PM
@towc wow ? don't you know @terdon ? He has for (nearly) everything a working solution ! :)

that's good to hear :)

Actually, I learned that one from @Seth :)

wait, so, again, is there a way to make it shorter?

@towc in general, you can enter Ctrl+Shift+U and then any unicode code (03bb is λ, and yes, of course I had to look it up)

for example, I never use 4 in the keypad, can I rebind it to that?

4:27 PM
@towc Maybe you could convince xbindkeys to do this but I don't know if it can. I only use it to assign shortcuts to commands.

well, ctrl+4 would be good enough :P

Alternatively, you could probably configure xmodset to do it. Somehow.

or shift+keypad4
thanks for the utility names, that's what I was probably looking for

Finally, you could always install a Greek keyboard layout and then use Ctrl+shift L and Ctrl+shift to switch back.
Σεε? Λικε τηισ
Ah, no, @towc I have it. Assign this command to a keyboard shortcut: echo λ | xsel
That will put the λ in your clipboard so you can run your shortcut and then paste it.

that would make more sense

4:33 PM
Make that printf λ instead of echo, you don't want the newline.

which I can actually do in i3...

@Zacharee1 What I especially found to be useful in you explanation was : "4. Just stick with the open source drivers." I exactly do this on my fedora 25 workstation with open source nouveau drivers for the NVIDIA GPU ... and it works great ... I am even able to launch applications with the dedicated GPU ... nevertheless on my ubuntu 16.10 workstation I still have that latest stable NVIDIA drivers installed - mainly for testing things which help other users here ! :)

open source drivers never work for me, but I figured maybe they'd work for others who don't really need intensive games and such to run

@Zacharee1 yes, intensive hard-core gaming is something else ... there of course it is recommended to have the latest stable proprietary drivers installed. :)

unless you use AMD

4:39 PM
@Zacharee1 Maybe it will change soon ... the new company strategy gives some indication I think ! :)

new company strategy?

@Zacharee1 example : Ryzen

so, I added this to my /etc/i3/config: bindsym $mod+a exec "printf λ | xsel"
not sure why that should work
I'll need to research xsel a bit

@cl-netbox whoa o_O
those are some cheap CPUs...

@Zacharee1 and powerful ... very competitive ... intel at once cut down their prices ! :)

4:43 PM
lol
good
we have competition now
so cheaper CPUs all over

competition is always a good thing

now we just need Intel and AMD to step up their graphics game

@towc a little hint : when you don't put an @ in front of a member name, @terdon might not notice that you responded to him :)

it's not important enough :P
I don't want his attention if he's trying to do something else

okay ... then ...

4:50 PM
@towc the thing about pings is they don't need to be responded to right away

but they do disrupt you slightly from whatever you're doing

not if your volume is muted

There is an icon in the top right to mute pings

and besides @terdon "loves" it when people ping him, especially excessively or to say hello
:p

Ok, what the heck is going on with imgur ?

4:52 PM
@Serg Seems you did exactly that ... so once again : Hi my friend ! :)

I can't upload anything to chat , nor I can upload into questions

Imgur is going on with imgur
Imgur is always breaking

@cl-netbox Hello :) And yes, I did exactly that, because I was listening something on loud volume and pings were scaring me
@Zacharee1 for two days ?

Possible

@Serg No idea ... I also had big issues with my new answer from today ...

4:54 PM
@towc xsel is just a clipboard manager, basically. It lets you save things from the command line into the clipboard. So echo foo | xsel will save the string foo in your clipboard and allow you to paste it.

Although the main version is working alright, so maybe it's stack.Imgur that broke

heh, not working for me

xdotool seems to be what I want though

There !
Finally

4:54 PM
Lol

See that volume icon ?
@towc what are you trying to do anyway ?

@Serg What about it? I don't even have speakers on the machine I'm currently on. I still get popup notifications though (which I do want since people sometimes ping me with good reason). Sound is only part of the annoyance.

@Serg yes, I knew about it :P

And I don't mind being pinged! I just don't want to be pinged for no reason.

Well, in case somebody does mind sound, i pointed it out, big and clear

4:58 PM
But with no read freehand circles. I am disappointed.

You asked, I delivered
Still disappointed in me, terdon sempai ?

@Serg How can I do this ?

@cl-netbox Install shutter. It has editing option.

@Serg Thanks :)

@Serg Freehand! Freehand! :P
You don't hang out on SO enough apparently ;)

5:05 PM
But freehand looks ugly
And yes, I don't go there that often

@Serg already?
Oh semester. I'm thinking quarter system. That's probably the difference.

@Seth yeah , already . . . I would understand if it started in April. We're still on like 6th or 7th week of 16 week semester . . . There's plenty of time to fail XD

Hi All, can someone please help me? My ubuntu 16.04 doesnt connect via HDMI to an external monitor. I have tried every possible suggestion and i cant seem to get it to work :(
if anyone knows how to solve this i would be eternally grateful! Whats more you even get to have some of my bounty :)

5:24 PM
Ugh . . . Wat ?O.o
@CodeGeek123 tried running xrandr --auto ?

@Serg @ Yes! This is what i get :( Can't open display :1.0

@NathanOsman OK, so question: my indicator-bullentin's PPA built everything OK, except for Yakety one. Did I bork something or is it problem with launchpad's servers ? launchpadlibrarian.net/309452531/buildlog.txt.gz
@CodeGeek123 Very odd. Tried different HDMI cables ,too?

@CodeGeek123 I don't have any suggestion (it looks like the screen isn't detected at all, are you sure it's connected properly, with a working cable etc?) but it would help if you could add some more details. Is this a laptop? A desktop? What graphics card do you have? Do you have more than one? What driver are you using? Which version?
If you don't already have it, install inxi (run sudo apt install inxi) and then add the output of inxi -G to your question.

@Serg I'd retry the build.
@Serg That looks like it's a repository related issue, not a build failure.

Ok, builds pending

5:34 PM
@Serg if it's still failing give me a link to the actual PPA, I'll pull the source and run the build in a chroot where I can then dissect the failure of installing packages a little more
@Serg almost certain though it's a small issue here?

@ThomasWard same thing again. PPA recipe: code.launchpad.net/~1047481448-2/+recipe/… Imports from github here: github.com/SergKolo/indicator-bulletin

did you add it as a dependency in the PPA you're building in?

@terdon Thanks! I have added the results of inxi -G. Its a dell xps 15. I uninstalled Nvidia i think because it doesnt work either :(

@CodeGeek123 Don't tell me, add it to your post :)

@ThomasWard add what as dependency ? the public key ?

5:36 PM
For example, you mention you uninstalled nvidia but don't clarify what you mean. Is that the proprietary nvidia driver? The open source nouveau one? The other one whose name I never remember? Was it the latest driver? Basically, the more info you give, the higher the chances of someone being able to help.

@Serg ... the PPA. i'll peek at it
@Serg uhm, imports from which repository lol
linking me to your plain GH does nothing useful

@CodeGeek123 I see the laptop make and model were right there in the title from the beginning. Sorry! Still, it's usually a good idea to have everything relevant in the body. Titles are easy to miss for some reason.

@ThomasWard code.launchpad.net/~1047481448-2/indicator-bulletin/+git/… Imports from github there, then builds into PPA

@terdon Thanks. I have now added it to the body

boxy!

@terdon was that star important ?

5:40 PM
@Serg no ... as mostly : not ! :D

@cl-netbox I have added a screenshot of the driver

@Serg star? I didn't star that.

@cl-netbox and i installed it like above.

@terdon I know, I was just letting you know it has been starred in a roundabout way in case you might wanna get rid of it

@CodeGeek123 okay ... which NVIDIA GPU do you have ? oh ... I see : GTX 960M

5:43 PM
OK, smoke and then class

@Serg have a good one ! :)

@Serg unfortunately I can't even get a package build done :/
i'll have to grab a .dsc to do it hang on

@CodeGeek123 off the top of my head, I would assume that only one of your cards, and almost certainly the discrete NVIDIA one, can use the HDMI port. In any case, you'd be more likely to get that one to work.

i have class so i'll have to look later

@CodeGeek123 Please stay tuned ... I am having an idea ... but it is too complicated to explain it here - do you want me to write an answer ? :)
Sorry terdon ... accidentally pinged you :)

@terdon Thanks!

@CodeGeek123 I can't guarantee that it works, but it should (hopefully) ... I solved many of these kind of problems in the past here ... :)

@cl-netbox Yes. Any lead on this would be much appreciated. I am stuck at a dead end! :(

wait, @CodeGeek123, XPS issue?

@Rinzwind Why don't people just check first? A simple ls would have been enough to demonstrate that that command didn't do anything.

@KazWolfe I don't know whether its XPS / Graphics card. Certainly the cable is working :)

5:55 PM
@CodeGeek123 Why are you so sure? And, if you've tried it on another operating system or machine, for example, please add that to your question.
You need to rule out all the obvious things so we don't suggest them and waste your time.

@terdon Have XPS 15, it doesn't have the discrete bound to anything.

@KazWolfe No? So the intel can also use the HDMI?

righto

@terdon Thanks. Yes will do

It's full Optimus.
Everything is thrown through the Intel graphics card, but it uses the discrete GPU as the video processor because "battery life"

6:01 PM
I see. Neat. I guess.

it's really not...

@KazWolfe Oh? Why not?

@terdon performance is annoying.

Like?

and it murders battery if you want half-decent performance

6:03 PM
@KazWolfe Oh, I thought you were describing the inverse.

It needs to go through a framebuffer on the intel card, which adds some delay.

The whole point of optimus is to switch between the two so as to increase battery life, right?

doesnt work on ubuntu
only always-on or always-off
you need to relog if you want to change things.

@KazWolfe Oh? You sure? I think I got it to work on my Arch. But I may well be wrong.

@terdon Bumblebee is dead.

6:05 PM
Um It is?

@CodeGeek123 What version is your NVIDIA driver, and what prime mode are you in?
@terdon pretty sure

My laptop seems to think its running it. Or, well, I think my laptop is running it. Not entirely sure how to check though and not at home at the moment.

last bumblebee release is 2013

@KazWolfe sudo apt-get install nvidia-378

Have you installed Intel drivers yet?

6:08 PM
@KazWolfe No. It already came installed i think. Also i dont know how to check prime mode?

nvidia-settings, PRIME Profiles

@terdon um...
That command is absolutely harmless. What makes you think anything actually happened? — terdon ♦ 46 mins ago
^ that only works with rm -rf /
I think /* is interpreted differently

@ThomasWard Yes. That's what the OP did. There was no *

@terdon I'd reread the question then if I were you

I assure you this the results of this command were real and severe. I ran it on 16.04 LTS. The display reset, and I lost use of all non-builtin commands (including ls, etc...). I lost access to almost all of my directories. But maybe this was not the precise command. Perhaps it was sudo rm /* -rf — D. Myers 11 mins ago

because ^ this now
so your comment has obsoleted itself

Yes, but not when I posted my answer.

6:30 PM
@terdon I didn't say anything about your answer
I made a reference to your comment on the question
there is a difference.

@ThomasWard Yeah, and both are obsolete now that the OP has edited.
Thanks for pointing it out.

yep

@ThomasWard issue went away, finally built

@Serg good, maybe it was a temporary issue with the repositories
