Most of my meta answers were down-voted shrugs It's only meta :)

@Zanna Just be glad you're not this guy :)
@muru Good to know. Was kinda waiting for that.

Your favourite troll is named Jane Doe... interesting :)

It's unknown whether it's a Jane. In the past it's also been David

@Seth 219 down votes must be a record

3:06 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix It is.

samthebrandUpdate: January 15, 2016 Thank you for your patience and feedback. We're going to delay the implementation for now - we'll be back soon to open some more discussions. Hmm, for an answer, it is.

I don't feel so bad with my 5 or 6 down vote meta answers now ;)

yeah, not for a question.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix worse, downvotes on meta.se actually count to rep. :D

@muru Cool I can delete my meta answers to gain rep then?

3:08 AM
You don't even have a meta.se account. O.o

I thought we were talking meta AU

@WinEunuuchs2Unix the posts Seth and I linked were on meta SE

points are bigger on the other sites. I posted one answer on Security SE and got 27 upvotes in 3 days.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix HNQ?

3:11 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix it's much more stressful because it's meta

@Zanna Anytime you are deemed wrong it's stressful even if it's crossing at a red light.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's definitely been on the HNQ

@Seth lol it's not personal though, I'm just upset people disagree about it

@muru Oh.... maybe I missed my calling :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix true but if that was all I could delete my answer and pretend it never happened but it's not about me
I was stressed about it the whole day
I didn't want to write an answer but I had to

3:15 AM
@Zanna I wouldn't sweat it Zanna... 99% of the stuff you write is well-received. So what if 1% isn't well-liked?

And now it's like I made it worse

My program is really acting strange.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix because like I'm trying to say it's not about me, it's about the site

I'm setting a value and when I check it on the next line, it hasn't changed...
Immediately sees typo.
Er, oops.

3:41 AM
goes back to sleep :/

acid_crucifixI am trying to design a system that plays multiple parallel streams of audio via multiple USB audio outputs. I have my laptop setup with 4 usb audio devices connected. @jokerdino too slow

It was deleted before I could load the flag dialog.

I'm debating what to do: sleep 1.5 hours, or stay up anyway ?
I'm not too tired,but at the same time I'm kind of hungry and could maybe go to work early, avoid all the traffic . . .
heh , "avoid" all the traffic that never seizes to exist in the first place

10:56 AM
@jokerdino that's how it is these days. I'm sure I'm flagging all kinds of stuff gratuitously to make up for it
@Serg no worries, I would have deleted that message if I hadn't been too slow

Q: Keeping a web app running on Ubuntu

user1226884I am new to web programming and Linux, I have an Angular2/NodeJS app running on a Linode Ubuntu server. I start the app using npm start and the app will stay running until the Terminal window on my mac is closed on times out. What should I be doing to keep the app/site running? Thanks Steven

OH YEAH?

YEAH. You can here it. It's very loud.

god, how could you possibly not have a full grasp on such a complicated language?

@JacobVlijm Jacob, please try and understand before one of us dies.

That's one of my all time favorite Fawlty Towers quotes.

1:27 PM
It's a master piece. One of my favorites too!

That it is. That it is.

2:14 PM
@ThomasWard you don't happen to have a Server 2008 R2 key lying around, do you?

2:27 PM
@jokerdino Done :)

sigh

@Zacharee1 What's up?

you

o.O
Need some tea?

that'd be nice actually
got Chai?

2:30 PM
Sorry, I drank them all already.

pls

Will give some on the next round.

@Zacharee1 Umm... maybe, why?
there's also a lot of different variants of 2k8R2, so i need to know which variant

Standard
I have Server 2008 here, but Vista

i'll have to see what i have lying around

2:35 PM
hi

i can check that later, @Zacharee1 I can't check from here though

@ThomasWard OK
@TheXed ih

whats up?

@TheXed The End.
(I just destroyed a computer oops)

@ThomasWard how so?

2:37 PM
Windows probably

@ThomasWard Isn't it your job to fix them ? ;P

@TheXed accidentally plugged it into a power strip fed by too much juice so boom
fried the board.

rip

@cl-netbox I have junk computers around for various tests, so oopsies I busted a power supply. I have a dozen additionla ones :P

@ThomasWard junk machines ... hahaha :D

2:38 PM
laptop or desktop?

@ThomasWard at least you didn't set a hard drive on a video card

@cl-netbox ancient repurposed systems that i paid about $18 each for :P

@ThomasWard nice
desktops or laptops?

@ThomasWard nice ... though it could have been cheaper ;P

If it was a desktop are you sure it wasn't the PSU and not the MOBO?

2:39 PM
yeah, that's plausible
and you can usually cannibalise something

@JourneymanGeek junk desktops
@TheXed PSU went 'pop' so yeah it's the PSU, not the mobo

@ThomasWard so that should be an easy fix...

as i said
but i don't care i was just stress testing the power supply :)
i have additional power supplies.
since it was an old one

I have used all my psu's...I need to buy some new ones...

i keep a few spares lying around, the GOOD ones I don't use in the junk machines :P
i have a few server-grade power supplies lying around, guess they'll be for my next build xD

2:43 PM
I sold my spares...

purchases a rack-mounted server with redundant power supplies, laughs evilly as he takes all the electrical power
In other news, I squished someone in two games of chess in a row from the code golf site :P
'twas fun.

I have a whole server that just needs a Hard drive to rebuild the RAID

2:56 PM
great
I asked how to transfer one Server 2008 to another and I basically got "RTFM"
and MS manuals make no sense

@Zacharee1 "transfer" what?
the licence? the contents?

@Zacharee1 full image of the hard drive, copy the image over.
transfering the license is harder

@ThomasWard nope
the source is 32 bit
dest is 64

@Zacharee1 then you need a brand new license key

I have one
Windows is activated

2:58 PM
license keys are issued per-arch too

the server had a sticker

then i'm not sure what you're asking :P

I need to transfer the configs

like the domain controller settings, DNS settings, DHCP settings
@ThomasWard I asked on Server Fault already: serverfault.com/questions/838930/…
god I hate Vista
no Aero snap

3:00 PM
god I hate Windows

guhhh

god I love Linux

@ThomasWard I can't even get a DC set up on Ubuntu :(

@Zacharee1 that's because Ubuntu's not designed to be a domain controller

well we need a domain controller
and a DNS server and a DHCP server

3:01 PM
Windows Domain Controller for Active Directory, system group policies, etc. DHCP and DNS on an Ubuntu server.
your Windows server doesn't have to control DHCP or DNS.
DNS is easy - bind9 or any of the alternatives. DHCP isn't too hard either, dnsmasq or such.

yeah but we only have this one box to do it atm

learn to virtualize?

there's also a 2850 downstairs, which could probably run Xubuntu, but I haven't gotten it set up
@ThomasWard srsly

@Zacharee1 You can quite literally deploy HyperV to the system and then install Ubuntu within the HyperV VM, bridge it to the network, and make it be the DHCP server with static IPs.

well OK
but if I have Windows Server up I might as well use it

3:03 PM
in my network, I have many VLANs, 3 are Windows VLANs and their DNS and DHCP are on the pfSense and two bind9 recursive resolvers in the DMZ
the rest of the VLANs are either mixed or pure Linux
or lab environments.
@Zacharee1 you'll have to export the DNS settings from the DNS Management in the one server

I need to transfer the DC first
and all the guides are for R2

Yeah, yeah nice, nice. But my vote is for the avatar. — Jacob Vlijm 2 mins ago

What happened to 'hue' ?
Well, I guess that was a good move to switch avatars. Makes me feel . . . blue

@Zacharee1 I'll make you some tea...

3:07 PM
I might even switch to . . . Microsoft Azure now . . .

:D

I feel like . . . the sky is the limit . . .
OK, I'm done with blue puns for now

@Zacharee1 2k8 and 2k8R2 aren't much different
the guides should still work

@Serg I might have been joking :) (well, I did vote, but about the motivation)

R2 is just a huge patchset

3:09 PM
@Zanna secretly puts salt into tea just to mess with Zach

R2 has some new migration tool that doesn't exist in 2008
@ThomasWard R2 is Windows 7

Q: 16.04 Ubuntu Installing Arial over SSH

Can CinarI am trying to install Arial on a Ubuntu server over SSH. I tried to use sudo apt-get install tff-mscorefonts-installer. But all I get is Unable to locate package tff-mscorefonts-installer. Can someone please help?

Vista --> 7 is a pretty big jump

@JacobVlijm I know ;) I understand the jokes . . .sometimes . . . when people explain them ._.

@Zacharee1 in terms of configuration i don't really think so - AD, etc. is mostly the same.

3:10 PM

Now I feel... orange

@JacobVlijm which of the 50 shades specifically ? ;)

I have no idea how any of this works....

3:14 PM
@Zacharee1 join me and Jacob. You'll do well with full-purple avatar

sigh

@Zacharee1 I need to run, I will explain to you why you should when I get back

Explanation is simple: peer pressure

@Zacharee1 read the comments
on the SF answer
steps are identical regardless.

I'm not moving to R2 unless you have an extra R2 key

3:17 PM
@Zacharee1 basically, open the R2 Services and Roles, add the services you need, to match as closely as you can the original server, deploy the services, export from old, import to new, etc.
@Zacharee1 i told you i'll look but the steps are the same for 2k8 -> 2k8 or 2k8 -> 2k8R2
yawns

3:40 PM
I've never seen a PCI-E x8 slot before today...
thankfully, I have a PCI-E x1 video card

@Zacharee1 I have. I have a PCI-E x16 slot too xD
thankfully you don't need to use the whole slot so one that doesn't need all the connections can still be put in a larger PCI-E socket and still work :p

Can I haz engrish question ?

This server uses PCI-E x16 slots on the MB, but then one 90-deg adapter goes to two full-size PCI, and the other goes to PCI-E x8

@Serg how can i has cheezburgr with linux cmdlin?

@ThomasWard I know how to get cheezburgr with cmdlin, there's a canonical post on AU about that.
( not a joke, by the way , there's a real question)

3:46 PM
it is?
I was just joking around heh

Q: How can I make my shell prompt look like a cheeseburger?

Corey GoldbergI want my shell prompt to look like a cheeseburger! 🍔🍔🍔 It would be nice if it also displayed: username, hostname, and current directory.

o.o wat

204 upvotes for cheeseburger !!! ^.^

lol

@ThomasWard I toldya

3:48 PM
16MB VRAM

I've been here for how many years, and how did I miss that?!?!?

I know this is a server, but that's just terrible

@Zacharee1 There's a button over there that explodes the vRAM into massive amounts

OK, back to my question

wat is @Serg

3:49 PM
but we don't use it because it requires vacuum energy and taking energy from normal subspace and shoving it into normal space which creates exotic particles.

Actually nevermind . . . I just found the phrase I was looking for while typing the question

lol
what's the phrase

I was trying to find English phrase equivalent for Chinese 实战 . That translates as "real fight" or "real battle" as opposed to training. The equivalent is "real-world"

ah

So if you search on amazon, there's bunch of books like ”Python编程实战“ , so I was struggling to translate it. I know I could say "Battlefield Python Programming" but . . . it seems like nobody says so in English, plus I needed multi-purpose phrase

3:53 PM
@Serg that;s a valid explanation for first-time learners of the Pythonic languages :P

hoi!

Oi, mate !

grr
it won't use the PCI card

@ThomasWard by the way, I decided to participate in the cheeseburger madness: askubuntu.com/a/894062/295286

@ThomasWard PCI is so last generation...

4:02 PM
ah I need to remove the DRAC
and viola
although DIMM 3 and 7 are failing for some reason
5 was and then I jiggled the DIMMs around a bit

@Zacharee1 you need a new test bench it sounds like...

I need to reseat them probably
and maybe pair them up correctly
whoever installed them put them in 1,1,2,2,4,4,4,4
which is nice and orderly, but not correct

@WinEunuuchs2Unix : I added a prerequisite package check to your selective kernel purge, server version, script. Reference: stackoverflow.com/questions/592620/… . Why? Because the error without the package installed is really useless. I hope you do not mind that I edited your answer. Thanks again for a really great script.

yay I have Aero now
that lessens the blow of Vista

somebody stop me before i spend my whole paycheck on kindle books

4:11 PM
lol
spend it on the OnePlus 3T Colette Edition
Server 2008 has an SP2?

I actually wanted to save up for a trip to China

actually, you could get the Mi Mix if you go to China
really cool phone

"The special edition handset will come with 128GB of internal storage, an engraved rear case, and all the other 3T specs including 6GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 821 processor, and a fast-charging 3,400mAh battery (“a day’s power in half an hour” is the OnePlus slogan)."
wuuuuut

yurp

@Zacharee1 Mi Mix ? From Xiaomi ?

4:14 PM
@Serg yehs
Xiaomi and Huawei make some great phones

They sure do.

also no Chrome on Vista :(
I have to use FF or shudder IE

@Serg how are you :) ?
blue profile pic?

@Anwar I'm ok. Blue because I am copying Jacob XD

So, why is he all orange?

I've no idea . . . Probably had too many tangerines :p

4:29 PM
He's actually Donald Trump

gasp

ha ha ha!

@Anwar because @Serg drank a whole bottle of vodka (without mixing it with coffee as he usually does) and is totally blue (another word for being drunken in Germany) now ! :D :D :D

Speaking of Donald Trump, I remember that troll post nomination during last AU election . "Make Ask Ubuntu great again!" XD
@cl-netbox how do you say blue in german , by the way ?

@Serg blau :D

4:31 PM
@cl-netbox he he :D

Ich ist blau , Ja!

google-translate to the rescue !

@Serg wow ! little correction : I am totally drunken = Ich bin total blau ! :D

I just forgot it all

Tsk, tsk.

i need rep but like half of the questions I don't understand

By the way @Serg the kernel thing ... did you check it ? :)

@Edity well . . . ever considered just reading some of my or other people's answers and learning from them ?
@cl-netbox haven't but will later today

4:38 PM
and then plagiarising them?
who said that?

YAWWNN epic yawn

@Zacharee1 ofcourz

@Edity only the half ? :D :D :D

well might be more

@Serg Your blue is a bit lighter than mine ... good piece of plagiarism ... but the result is not as perfect as your scripts and indicators are ! :D

why do they always make the "diet" text so hard to see?
and why does Windows have to reboot for everything?

Q: How to obtain logs which show what application/process started running on what time?

Parth VermaI have seen the syslog, auth.log and dpkg.log, but none of them contain which process started running at which time. I am doing a project which requires noting the user's activities (i.e. what programs he opened almost simultaneously). Any software/program would also do. I also saw sagan but it...

@Zacharee1 is it like "I wanna puke, this tastes horrible" type of diet or just no-sugar and tasteless diet ?

it's the "this kinda tastes like Stevia but I know it's aspartame" type

@cl-netbox it's actually royal blue, the color of my high school
thanks for the kind word on the scrips and indicators, btw

we need to make a scripting language: derpscrip

4:48 PM
i'm about to go on spring break, so . . .probably will make a couple new ones

my "spring" break is about to end :(

@Serg thanks for fixing my answer even more haha

@Serg but that's a C++ plugin, not an entire scripting language

@Zanna always welcome !

:) :)

4:51 PM
@Serg nice choice ... royal blue is much better than "dirty" orange (IMHO) ... hahaha ... what is your opinion on that @JacobVlijm ? :D :D :D
@Serg honestly meant (that part was not a joke) ! :)

Also . . .I would like to point out . . . Dear Go, developers . . . you did not make your programming language name easily searcheable online . . . But at least golang works

vtc as broad and it's an cross-post: askubuntu.com/questions/893974/…

@Serg Uhm. C, C#, C++, R. . .

@cl-netbox "dirty" orange and royal blue complement each other. Ying and yang , yo
@terdon yeah, that too
People need to get creative with programming language naming

@Serg as long as you don't mix them - yes ! :D

4:56 PM
@Serg Brainfuck?

@Serg yin

Hi terdon ! :)

o/

@terdon overly creative and prone to censorship

@Serg they could name them like ubuntu releases, "How do I sort a dict in blue gopher?" ;)
