Intentional misnomer.

@Serg I don't leave the house for less than 20GBP/hr and I'd never be able to pay the rent if I did... I will charge 40 if I can. The way it goes, it's hard to fit in more than 2 hours a day... at least that's how it is for me
@jokerdino Hahaha

3
Q: Is there a word for an intentional misnomer?

batpigandmeIs there a word that describes that something has been named "incorrectly" on purpose (a sort of intentional misnomer)? For example, calling someone who is very tall Shorty (or something to that effect).

god i love gps tracking on phones so much sometimes.

6:03 PM
yeah, I am just going to stick with what I said already.
@Zanna you are not going to shoot me anymore, are you?

Malicious anything doesn't really work...

Hello, Nathan !

I do have time after 4:15 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays until 7 pm ( I've class then ). I've time today so if you wish, we can meet up and discuss details. So far I don't have set price, but you're looking at something around 15 - 20 $ per hour. We can negotiate, though.

Just to make things clear, I don't do other people's homework; what I can do as far as assignments go is proofread the code, and fix errors, go over conceptual ideas of how the code is supposed to flow.
eh ? How's that ?

+1

eh, you are tutoring Nathan O?

6:10 PM
Nathan Osman doesn't need tutoring
He's already a veteran in coding

Wait, wait, wait, what?
7
Oh, a different Nathan, lol.

@NathanOsman TL;DR , a guy with same name as yours asked me to tutor him

Oh cool.

@Serg I like what you wrote to that Nathan guy. Pretty clear at what your intentions are.

6:17 PM
I run ubuntu inside a virtual box hosted under windows 10.. Configured a NAT Network.. However using a putty client, i couldn't ssh into the Guest Machine.. Any pointers?

@Serg jacob is back in action it seems
he just answered the filesystem indicator question

@edwinksl I see. Kinda alright
@karthick87 you need port forwarding on the router AND on the host machine , iirc

Hello everyone
I am struggling to explain to a user that information should be edited into a question
https://askubuntu.com/questions/829322/terminology-works-only-in-guest-session

Maybe my writing is not clear enough... ?

@Serg @Terrance thanks that helped

6:31 PM
@AndreaLazzarotto it's not you, that just happens sometimes. Actually they wrote that comment as answer and it got changed into a comment :S

@AndreaLazzarotto it's clear enough. I've left a comment

thank you @Zanna @Serg

Hmmm, how would I make a dictionary, with each value being a list . . . and key - a string

in Python?

yup
i am for-looping

6:37 PM
do you have a MNWE?

what's a MNWE ?

minimum non-working example :P

em . . . sort of . . .

pseudo-code is fine

hold on . . .

6:38 PM
@AndreaLazzarotto very Stack Overflow lol

eheh LOL ... BTW pseudo-code is usually luxury, clients normally describe what they want in plain words... assuming they know what they want

the world would be a lot simpler if people could state unambiguously what they want

you know, even then it won't be that simple...
I could say "I want to find the love of my life" but I would still remain very single :D

but it would be a good start :p

Nevermind, I got it

6:48 PM
@Serg most of the time you shouldn't be using explicit for statements, though
```
stuff = {
'a'*i: ['a']*i
for i in range(10)
}
```

@AndreaLazzarotto why is that ?

because comprehensions are way faster than for [...]:
a comprehension uses C-loops and a for statement uses Python loops

@AndreaLazzarotto well, I can't really deal with comprehensions here for multiple reasons: code readability, and multiple if statements

of course if you have a complex body you'd probably use an explicit for

@AndreaLazzarotto i am not sure if they are way faster. they are faster, but not a dealbreaker

6:55 PM
Python Wiki: «If the body of your loop is simple, the interpreter overhead of the for loop itself can be a substantial amount of the overhead»

https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonSpeed/PerformanceTips#Loops
it depends on what you do inside the loop

nice list of tips :D

yeah, I had to read that stuff while I was developing RecuperaBit
a good performance boosh was also obtained by switching from Python to Pypy

unfortunately pypy for python 3 is lagging behind

yes... everything Python 3 is lagging behind

anyway, the magic of JIT compiler... i should sit down one day and figure out what that thing really does

7:02 PM
but honestly, the only thing I had to deal with on Python 2.7 was the lack of proper utf-8 support, solved by using the codecs package... for the rest, I guess I am not expert enough to miss something special in Python 3

Q: We're updating jQuery to 1.12.4 tomorrow

Michael StumWe're updating the jQuery version that Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange use from version 1.7.1 to 1.12.4 tomorrow (Tuesday, September 27) at 12pm Eastern/4pm UTC. jQuery is an infrastructure library, and we've been running on an old version for a while because it worked well. However, there are ...

All my 50 VMs have different long passwords and I have forgotten them all!!! >:{

7:05 PM
/facepalm . . .

user136984
Actually, I remember 2 of them, but that's not quite going to do it... :D

@ParanoidPanda 50 VMs? quite the vm farm you have there

Hopefully the point of those VMs is not just trying different wallpapers :D jk

@AndreaLazzarotto lol

user136984
@AndreaLazzarotto: Actually, you're close... :P

7:10 PM
different icon themes?

user136984
No, slightly more impressive than that...

user136984
Different DEs, and one different OS.

that makes sense

user136984
Although I've just gone through and deleted all the ones I don't need so I am now left with only 5. :P

I don't even know more than 5-6 DEs

user136984
7:11 PM
For which I don't know any of the passwords but it should be quicker than with 50! :D

user136984
Yay! I remember the passwords for 4 of them! :D

resetting the password via GRUB is easy
like 2 minutes

user136984
Well, it would be too long for 50.

user136984
That's why I deleted them! >:D

you could actually write a script that mounts the biggest ext partition on each VDI file, replaces the root password and then let it run
it would be fun but probably longer

7:15 PM
My Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 VM is now running the full GNOME 3.22! Yay!! :D

@ParanoidPanda is beta 2 out yet?

user136984
@edwinksl: No, they still haven't managed to do a successful respin it seems.

ah ok
i am looking forward to official release

user136984
Well, you can download the Beta 2 images which are ready, just the Lubuntu alternative and the main alternative (I think it was them anyway) images break.

user136984
But they like to release them all at the same time.

user136984
7:18 PM
@edwinksl: Why?

user136984
Basically nothing is new.

@ParanoidPanda i like shiny new things

user136984
It's just 16.04 with some updated packages and an updated DE if you don't use Unity.

new kernel though

user136984
Really? Because it's still 4.2 on my Beta 2 machine.

7:20 PM
it is supposed to be 4.8 eventually right?

user136984
Is it? I was sure I heard about it going to 4.4, but not 4.8.

user136984
Maybe with 17.04, but I don't think 16.10.

user136984
I could be wrong and 4.8 would be nice, but I don't think so.

Dammit , For some reason I cannot query the Configuration property on each dbus item
AAaaand also i am late for class. FSCK

user136984
@edwinksl: Actually, I think you might be right, strange I hadn't heard about it before nor does Beta 2 run it.

7:26 PM
i think it gets finalized during kernel freeze, which happens next week or something

user136984
Well, this is confusing me, some sources say 4.4, others say 4.6, and some say 4.8... I guess we will find out though! :D

user136984
@edwinksl: You were right! That's really very weird! It said it was upgrading to 4.2 on my 16.10 VM and then it suddenly just changed to 4.8! :D

nice nice
@ParanoidPanda i see you already took action askubuntu.com/posts/517140/revisions

I see you're trying to determine when to use jQuery by analyzing the problem at hand and applying logic and reason to make an informed decision about its possible implementation. You should totally drop that and try jQuery. — snicker Apr 1 '10 at 21:28

A: When is "use jQuery" not a valid answer to a JavaScript question?

Earlz So my question is - bearing all these in mind - at what point is "use jQuery" not an appropriate answer to a javascript question? A question which is not answerable with "Use jQuery" is not an appropriate question. My answer is correct because my answer is correct.

solid reasoning right at the end there

Anyone have thoughts on this? ebay.com/itm/…

MS does a good job making sure it doesn't work.
@Terrance Tried that :/

yeah...
@Terrance nope.
there's still nothing better than MS office, sadly.

But not for Mac!

@Zanna the power of HNQ

we just need MS office and most games on Linux.
Then, Linux will finally see the Desktop Era.

oh and I need VMWare Workstation. Which was crashing in Ubuntu on me.

10:12 PM
@KazWolfe NMS on Linux! lelelelel

@edwinksl I would play it then.
I'm going to be honest. NMS has a lot of potential. They screwed it up a lot, but it does have a chance.

@KazWolfe even at 60 dollars?

In its current state, it's not worth $60. Or even $30. I personally would cap at $20 if I were desperate to play something new.

@edwinksl btw, I think you weren't here... when I asked my Q today and Rinz answered it, jokerdino said "that's going straight in HNQ" with psychic powers - I didn't realise that the rep of the asker and answerer affects it... he was right of course.

@KazWolfe the steam reviews are as scathing as before lol. i am afraid NMS has hit a point of no return

10:15 PM
eh, i might mod
or just play in my own way (which is restrict myself to a few star systems)

@Zanna oh i think i saw jokerdino say that

Q: Heat Detector - analysing comments to find heat

Petter FribergGeneral Heat detector is a StackApp whose goal is to catch offensive, rude, snarky comments, and comments that leads to abusive content (offensive, spam posts, or previous offensive comments). It is running a bot that queries comments from the Stack Exchange API and retrieves all comments posted...

Something for AU? (@Seth)

eh?

SmokeDetector for comments.
Hey, @Zacharee1, this script is perfect for you!

good evening!

10:45 PM
brb going to MSE ;-;
@Seth, I have a mod question for you, if you're not busy

hi
@KazWolfe what about it?

in the post timeline, does anything have a red color?
i'm thinking of writing a suggestion to move things like deletions from the "history" category to a special "mod" category to make them stand out more.
i want to make sure I'm not conflicting with anything, @Seth.

@KazWolfe I think deleted things have that light pink tint, but I can't find a good Q to test on atm.

it has deleted as history

yeah, flags have a red box and deleted stuff has a pink tint background

10:55 PM
flags have a red box.
okay.

Question . . .can a single disk be mounted at multiple mountpoints ?

since i was thinking of something like this:
at least to make close/delete/whatnot actions more visible.
but if flags are already red like that (i guess they are, @Seth?), I'm not sure what to have as mod-type actions.
Unless flags get changed to a yellow tint or something

@KazWolfe not quite so bright, but yes, red.

huh.
Then @Seth (sorry for asking so many questions lol), have you ever seen this color? What does it correlate to?

not that I recall.

11:02 PM
it's listed as "closure" in the CSS.
but closed events are listed as "history"

user136984
So I understand that there is some big US Elections TV debate coming up soon?

user136984
Probably will have to go to bed by then though. It's at 1AM in the morning for GMT/BST isn't it?

9 pm EDT
so 2 am BST?

and let's wait for MSE to kill me.

one goat for you
you will need it before the downvotes come

11:10 PM
in this case, it's a valid question, i think.
i mean, there's no explanation that I've been able to find.

I'm so hungry. But I don't have any good food in the house..

@Seth you can eat when there are no flags :P

:(
hey, new podcast.

who is watching presidential debate later

what time is it?

11:12 PM
me

9 pm EDT

I guess I will try
but I might forget.
I don't really want to watch a crapfest between Hillary and Trump, but I am kind of interested in hearing what Trump has to say.

@ParanoidPanda no.

11:22 PM
@ParanoidPanda calling her Clinton is weird because we already had Bill.

user136984
Wait, which messages are you all replying to?

user136984
@KazWolfe: I guess so, but then we should call the T Donald.

@ParanoidPanda We didn't have President Trump yet. And "Trump" is the brand name.

user136984
We shouldn't use personal names with one and formal ones with the other. It can create a mental bias at least.

Hillary's been advertising herself as "Hillary" so...

user136984
11:25 PM
Perhaps that is to encourage bias.

humans tend to fall for marketing and use marketing brands.

@Serg bind mounts should allow that IIRC

@KazWolfe woah shog replied

user136984
You know, I heard that CNN actually edited out Clinton saying that NY bombing was a bomb before the media said it was, but they didn't do that for Trump and he was criticised for it. Now that is some big bias which shouldn't be allowed in the main media outlets, but we seem to be seeing a lot in this election.

Bias is all the media knows how to do anymore.
Welcome to 1984 - in 2016.
