to answer your question, david, it's a custom python stack that's actually very extensible.

my chatbot went the way of the dinosaur when google turned off xmpp

haha @RobotHumans

I completely ignored PEP when writing it, because i don't care, but it's actually rather easy to play with

Brb, rl problems

hopefully the kitchen isn't on fire or anything

8:02 PM
@RobotHumans my kitchen is always on fire.
yay 60s aluminum wiring!

^ That, my friend, is more concerning than the kitchen, in some circles :0

@ThomasWard lp0: printer on fire

@KazWolfe exactly!

i want that whenever my printer runs out of ink

well, enough reading about git here, going to get ready for work
I think I'm getting a feel for it
soon I'll pull my little indicator on github and try to keep working from there

8:04 PM
don't pull with SSH unless your network permits it. :P
(I have to use HTTPS for all my git stuff at work, and through a proxy >.>)

@ThomasWard wat. always pull with ssh, unless you actually can't
if you can't use ssh, yell at your admin

you mean if my network blocks SSH connections?

@KazWolfe a lot of work networks prohibit external SSH destinations

@ThomasWard that is stupid.

not really

8:06 PM
i want to ssh into my home server from work

I was going to use HTTPS anyways

@KazWolfe I want that when Optimum does service on my street, and because my modem refuses to behave when it doesn't receive service, it heats up to 55 celsius, OH WAIT.. pretty much the same thing

if i wanted a reverse tunnel with no code, ssh cli or script would be key

@hbdgaf go get trusted lol

8:06 PM
It burned my desk :I

@KazWolfe if there's a business critical reason, it can usually get permitted. otherwise, it's an information concern, especially since you can use SSH to tunnel and bypass other security controls.

I've read you can do SSH through HTTPS for github though

@KazWolfe I had a network admin threaten me with a shock collar wired around the server room. thankfully, the server room was right next to the bathroom... so it would have been inhumane

@RobotHumans turn off the collars :D

8:09 PM
odd as it sounds, that did actually happen

well, gotta start getting ready! I'll keep you posted when I do pull some code on Github, you will be my guinea-pigs (???)
that's a weird translation for "cobaia" lol

 wlan0: router on fire

see you all later!

Yeah but your computer has cooling @KazWolfe my router doesn't XD

8:10 PM
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice that IS my router.

Oh crap what are you using to see that?

it just has a really nice admin panel

Dannnng
Mine is miserable
After last years "incident" we can't access ANY ip's on school computers

oddly enough i don't have trouble with my net connection any more since i guessed the lineman testing phone # and use it on the daily for my base connection

8:13 PM
What router you got? When I switch to FIOS I want a new clean router

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Asus router.
with custom firmware

@jokerdino enjoy :)

I wanted to use pfSense, but i couldn't. :(

8:14 PM
asus routers easy to flash? or do you actually have to try?

@RobotHumans this one wasn't.
T-Mo had a promotion where you got a free router from them.

then points to you.

This is said promotional router, which required me to screw with the CFE.
but the AC-RT68U is actually pretty easy to mess with

Q: Reputation with editing "to be closed" questions

David Cole - Grammar PoliceAs an avid editor for the main site, I have taken quite a liking to the 2 rep I get for passing my time, however when I see a question that is off topic, and yet messy, like this one, I still feel the need to edit it and make it pretty ^v^ My question is not if I should do this, but if the questi...

8:15 PM
it just had some t-mobile firmware signing garbage

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice not so lucky when it's something like 9876543211

What do you mean? @RobotHumans

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Never bypass a MODS! >:)

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice I didn't need luck to guess the lineman number. I said "What would even a retard be able to remember?" 1-9, 9-1, etc etc

Huh? @HenryWHHackv2.0
Oh true @RobotHumans
HOLY DICKS

8:18 PM
yeah, asus routers can be both slick and pricy

I hate when sites can't just TELL YOU HOW MUCH THE PRODUCT IS

i wasn't trying to guess the lineman number honestly. they didn't tell me my phone number b/c i wasn't getting telephone service with the dsl... and i spent my time on hold guessing at lineman numbers. oddly, i guessed right just about the time i came off of eternal hold.

Like: I'd respect you more if you just told me your product cost an arm and a leg instead of hiding it inside of 4 different links!

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice yeah that is a pet peeve of mine too

So many antennas

8:21 PM
If someone can recommend a good priced (50-70$) router that supports 100/100 with ethernet I'd love them <3

That's awful and at the same time I can't stop laughing @RobotHumans

that's my MO

this router was free (lol) and reaches about 150 yards LoS.

Kaz what model do you have

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice let's summon Satan!

decides a joke about pinging oli would be in bad taste

@RobotHumans no, that would be Shog

@Serg Hello! :)

brb more rl problems

8:34 PM
\o

hi serg

yay work from home, to the point where you have an IP phone on your desk

I might go get a haircut, getting a little long in the back

Long in the back? Well, mull it over.

Yeah like it's a little shaggy, kinda looks like I used a curler XD

8:39 PM
@chaskes yeah, he could go with the mcguyver

But get it? Long in the back, mull it over? :)

@RobotHumans There you go. I can always count on you.

you're in IT. nobody cares how you look

My gf probably does
Okay so at the bottom of an email, I clicked unsubscribe
it brought me there

8:41 PM
@KazWolfe "You're in flip flops, cargo shorts, and have a 72 oz coffee... and it's december. You must be in IT"

don't change for people, opposite sexes especially.
@RobotHumans cargo shorts are only acceptable for camera crews and IT.

LMAOO @RobotHumans
¯_(ツ)_/¯ I do anyways Kaz, I'm self conscious

seriously though. i just wear jeans, a t-shirt, and a hoodie. Good enough. Hair is cut whenever it interferes.
No problems, nobody seems to really care

I wear shorts all year round, and designer shirts, spend 45 minutes every morning doing my hair, and yes, makeup then I go to school, and then work

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice that seems way excessive.

8:44 PM
Meh
Im used to it by now

yay for just putting on whatever clothes are nearest and then heading to work!
entire morning routine takes ten minutes, tops.

When I have to wear slacks, Perry Ellis has me covered saksoff5th.com/main/… dress slacks with cargo pockets. Didn't know they made them until recently

I wake up at 5:30 to catch the bus @ 6:40 to get to school @ 7:20 to get out @ 1:30 to get to work by 3:00
Then get home @ 9
do homework, eat, sleep, and it repeats

wake up at 7:20, leave to work at 7:30, get there at 8, leave whenever i want

.-.
The life of an IT...

8:47 PM
i can get there later if i want lol
or... i just stay home entirely.

@chaskes xD

yay SSH and IP phones!
and my comfy chair

Stop leaving out the bad parts. Nobody knows you until the world is on fire, then you're satan until everything works again. Then they forget who you are again.

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice one arm is gone

8:48 PM
@RobotHumans that's why i'm here lol
if i had work, i'd actually be doing it
but i do have a layer of job security

@edwinksl I'm here all night.

i basically get paid crap to sit around, drink coffee, and browse Reddit and AU
love my job, hate my pay

@KazWolfe loves/hates job and loves/hates pay are usually inversely proportional. as long as it's direct and not logarithmic against you, you're on the winning side

and whenever i get bored, i just plug my coffee machine into the UPS
(which invariably involves unplugging a random server, but who cares? if anyone complans, i get a support ticket)
so far there are three servers that are unplugged with no complaints lol

8:51 PM
hahahahh

yes, this is support. how may i direct your call...

Apple support is actually great

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice they are. i have AppleCare+ on my hackintosh!

i wish i were joking

I'm desperate. I tried to reinstall mongodb from scratch. Now /etc/mongodb.conf has gone missing, and whatever I do I can't get it regenerated. I've tried to apt-get remove and apt-get install. File is still not there. I've tried dpkg-reconfigure mongodb-server. Nothing happens. :-(

i also get my own office, so the perks are nice
(although it is the server room, but meh)
yay climate control for the whole office (and campus)!

@aioobe have you asked a question on the site ? Asking in chat is not always a good idea, but more of a gamble of having someone who knows about package management present

schadenfreude@oubliette:~$ apt-file search mongodb.conf
...
mongodb-server: /etc/init/mongodb.conf
mongodb-server: /etc/mongodb.conf
@aioobe maybe check in etc/init to see if it's just a permissions broken link?
alternately, just rip it out of the deb. it's just a specifically formatted archive anyway. extract it and you can get at any file it provides.

@RobotHumans, thanks a lot. I'll give it a try.

9:03 PM
@aioobe the latter option is probably better. and np.

@RobotHumans, I'm surprised that apt-get remove / apt-get install didn't regenerate the files. This is something I've noticed before too. apt-get remove doesn't actually remove everything associated with the package, like config files. Is this the case or have I dreamt it?

@aioobe It is the case, and it is by design. Think about how pissed you would be if you spent hours and hours on a config file, only to have it blown out when you fiddled with packages. I'm sure there's a way to tell the packaging system to reset config files, but I don't remember what it is.

I tried "sudo apt-get remove mongodb-org mongodb-org-mongos mongodb-org-server mongodb-org-shell mongodb-org-tools" now for instance, and I still have an etc/init/mongodb.conf on my system.
True.
Ok.
I bet that since I removed the files (in an attempt to try to force them to be regenerated) the system considers them "modified" and doesn't do anything about the non-existent config files. Although that's the opposite of what I want right now.

That may be the case.
I don't really know. I'm giving you the pieces I do know that sort of explain what is going on.

apt-get remove --purge did the trick. Thanks for confirming that config files are not actually removed by a plain apt-get remove.

9:09 PM
There you go.
On non-existent == modified, it's probably so things that depend on starting the daemon dynamically and loading a config in a non-standard location don't break by oopsing into a new config file.

ah. That sounds like a reasonable explanation.

Am I missing something or does this accepted answer have nothing to do with the question? askubuntu.com/questions/825895/…

@chaskes probably not

Meaning I'm not prolly missing something? Even the comments make no sense.
Answer is prolly that the .desktop for lynx has a non-obvious name.

you are probably not missing something

9:21 PM
I'm so tired of intervening in crazy situations. I'm not sure I want to get involved right now.

i can't get involved in that one. the 3 rep user has the nvidia optimus tag in their profile, and when i see it, my vision goes red. so i don't touch anything involving it.

So you understand what I'm saying. I'm so tired of the arguments and pushback.

why does my company have a classification policy
this is dumb

@chaskes yes. i don't touch optimus questions or users b/c it feels like "So, what had happened was, I checked the internet and saw this stuff was super buggy, but now I bought some of it. So, I want you to fix it. It's your problem, not mine." I have no problem with users that sound more like "Hey, I knew this was buggy, and it mostly works now, but with these duct tape fixes and that bit of bailing wire, I'm not sure what to strap down next"

@chaskes ^
I think that's what LD James is talking about

9:26 PM
@RobotHumans Or this is the laptop I already had, I can't afford another one and now I'm trying to make linux work well enough with the graphics card

@chaskes that is also ok.

The answer probably gives OP what they want - that "thingy" doesn't show up in the dash anymore. OP also has no clue that those items in the dash are not necessarily launchers. I'd say the answer is proper

@edwinksl Thanks, but I understood what he was saying but I don't see how it solves the problem.
@Serg That's his list of installed apps. It's not going away that way.

@chaskes presumably OP found that the question mark icon went away after clearing usage data, lol

@edwinksl I'm betting he just didn't put ly in the search box this time.

9:30 PM
i don't know how to test it though, so i assume OP accepted the answer because it worked :/

@edwinksl Well, I have to say that's a big assumption. People seem to accept answers for many reasons other than "it worked"
Oh, well.

@chaskes lynx , the command-line browser that you see referenced in that screenshot, however doesn't create a .desktop file upon installation. That had to be something from usage history

I challenge the claims made in this guy's bio.

@Serg Well, my original thought was that sometimes terminal apps do create launchers and sometimes the launcher has a name that doesn't match the executable.
Of course, I could be wrong, but I just don't see anything in the answer or the comments that linked the Q with the A. That said, you are probably correct.

@chaskes that's true, there are many cases where launchers don't match the executable, and terminal apps do create .desktop files. In this particular case , it's neither. I've lynx installed right now, checked dash - no launcher, nothing. Only runable from terminal

9:36 PM
Ok, good to know. It could also be that the OP is mistakenly calling it a launcher and a .desktop file. Still, the answer should point this out then.

yeah looks like lynx doesn't create a .desktop file packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/amd64/lynx/filelist

perhaps launchers should have a divider in the left panel to show manually launched but remembered apps and actual desktop files added to the menu?

Thanks, guys for the feedback. I still think a better answer would correct the OP's misconceptions and point out that he may erase some history that he wants...but these are quibbles. It's not an out-of-the-blue answer like I originally thought.
So I was missing something.

me too, so don't feel bad

@RobotHumans one hell of a username and hostname

9:45 PM
yep
and another dark side landing. :/

10:08 PM
?

wtf
my printer has a function "Expire current cartridges"

Do you have monthly shipping of cartridges by vendor or such?

no. it's in the service menu
it apparently sets the cartridges to 0 pages left and marks them as unusable.

I was thinking that might be a way to trigger the send me a new cartridge, but it was a guess.

it's a way to trigger me to go out and buy new cartridges

10:13 PM

10:41 PM
so... would a bot that flags mint and kali posts a la SmokeDetector be a good idea?

@KazWolfe tag tsar, should we add wsl tag to this askubuntu.com/questions/825922/…

Smokey does not flag, it only reports in chat.

it flags it for chat's attention
urgh
#EditWarz

fun to watch

So what is the diff between and ?

10:46 PM
wsl is the "official" name
i use it because it's shorter, but there really isn't one.
They represent the same thing.

why aren't they synonymized/merged then?

submitted meta post, no answer.

seems some manual mod poking is needed...
Easier to fix it while the tags are still small.

Q: Tag Synonym Request: Ubuntu on Windows

Kaz WolfeThere are currently multiple tags covering Ubuntu On Windows. This proposal aims to bring them all into a single centralized (and easy to use) tag. As such, I'd like to request that wsl be used for all posts about the Ubuntu on Windows system, so it should be a synonym for bash-on-windows and ub...

So many uncompleted synonym requests... meta.askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/tag-synonyms

here's a secret feature of AskUbuntu.

no

What's the policy on an answer like this: "instructions" for gnome 3.18 on a 5-yr old question about gnome 3.2? askubuntu.com/a/825923/117123

@chaskes I'd say leave it if it is useful for newer versions.

@ByteCommander Ok, thanks.

@chaskes Hi, Chaskes. You might have missed something in reading my comments and answer. My comments was to be certain where the user was seeing what he was interpreting as a program. I thought about discussion whether it was something runnable. But instead I asked for information so that my answer would be more direct to his problem and question.
2 hours ago, by RobotHumans
@chaskes probably not

Damn scanner, i can't figure out where the dark lines are coming from

hardware defect?

11:26 PM
@L.D.James Problem's been resolved. We were just a bit confused at first because it doesn't seem to be on-topic until you actually read through it

Maybe hardware defect. I took it apart, cleaned the glass bed, the scanner thingy itself - and yet there's still dark line in the image

He saw something on his system and asked for a description, thinking he had hit something to install it. My answer was to describe some of the feature of the search button and history of activity. I understand that you saw things different. But I put myself into his place when I was new to computers. I gave him something to work with. Also looking at the tool for removing history will help him to understand how to remove what he might consider junk from this search history.

Yeah, your answer is just fine and can stand.
We were just confused here for a bit.

...or course, or just let it do it's thing an scroll off. I'm sure if you think about it, it'll make sense and you're recognize the answer matches the question.
Thanks!

though, if i may give some advice, it would have been preferable to explain where it actually came from, not just how to get rid of it.
But that's just a personal taste.

11:29 PM
@L.D.James I absolutely missed something, which I admitted in later comments. You were right. In the end I just had a quibble saying that the answer should make it a little more clear what was going on. But you were absolutely correct. :)

Or, at least make it more apparent, it's kind of hidden in your post.

I thought I did explain where it came from in the first part of my answer. I wanted my answer to match his question... so I added the part of how to get rid of it.

@L.D.James Yeah, you did, it just took me a second or two to notice it. Like I said, it's fine, and that's just a personal taste issue.

Thanks!

One more minor point, info in comments is not permanent and should be expected to go away. So it's good practice to include points from the comments in the answer.

you can post a link in the chat, but actually ask on-site

I agree about the comments being trivial and might go away. My comments was mainly for my information so that I could be more on point with the answer. Speaking too much about the details of the comment could distract from the on the point and clear answer. My comments was just to identify clearly what he was seeing. From the original question, he mentioned dash but appeared to describe launcher. I really thought he was talking about the launcher.
I believe as you mentioned, the comments was throwing you off at first. So they can be as you mentioned disregarded and deleted. I was focused on giving a clear and to the point answer... which I understand it might not be as clear and precise to some. But that was my intentions.
I appreciate the advise and critique. When I answer a question, I try to take in account that others will be reading and should be able to benefit. So if it isn't clear to you, then I'm failing and will have to step up trying to be more careful.

i guess i'm getting a new scanner. This is BS of A

Well, the answer is well-written. I would just suggest adding a first sentence that says something like "You're not finding a .desktop file, but a recently used app from your history. Here's how to clean it out..."

11:45 PM
@Sara thanks!
@JamesTobin o/

no u thanks

The way I read his question is that he was concerned about how to remove the file when there isn't a desktop. He had already recognized by searching that there wasn't a desktop file. I guess I could have repeated what It appeared that he had found and posted in his question. There's always a little more to add. Even now, I'm feeling like I'm leaving some important points out... but at the same time I feel like I might be a little verbose.

Simple Scan is absolutely horrible

@Serg NO ITS NOT!!!

@JamesTobin Instead of typing in allcaps , maybe you could help me fix it. Otherwise, my argument still stands - it's crap
