I just made a CW here... the story is long.... I helped this person and they ended up writing up the steps (rather incoherently) their answer was deleted by a mod, possibly because they deleted it from their other post (as I advised them it was in the wrong place and should be posted on the first one) and possibly because it was a bit confusing. I am not sure what to do now. Have I done the right thing? Can I get an upvote on my CW to close the question? Can we close the OP's linked question?
long time ago... because only now I can see the deleted answer!
@Zanna im not allowed to post answers cause of my rep on these forms how people downvote when i ask for help :( — Ubuntu N00B 6 hours ago
what to do here ^
do we really need ???
surely is enough?

@Zanna OP is not allowed to answer their own question? really?

yeah I would think that they can, but I don't wanna dispute their reality, you know? you can get an idea of their competence from the edit history of the question... but idk
I'm gonna reject the tag edit on I think that tag is overkill, so sue me

8:15 AM
i removed the tag from the only question it was in

@Zanna anwar just wrote a CW

thanks @Anwar :)

thanks for editing

:) teamwork :D

I'm re-writing an essay answer and getting distracted all the time

8:27 AM
I have installed Linux Mint 18 and wireless drivers also, but NetworkManager cannot create wireless hotspot

I'm also doing maintenance, but I am feeling lazy @Anwar

hmm..
your answers?

@Zanna that gnome-terminal and "less" question is quite interesting. I've found bunch of workarounds, tweaked tons of settings, yet gnome-terminal stubbornly keeps the position of text :/

haha!
@Anwar yes, I need to move some images :(
@Serg I'll upvote the question then, I didn't realise it was a general problem.... why is gnome-terminal so glitchy?

@Zanna I don't think it's glitchy. The developers have made some . . . interesting choices there

8:33 AM
hehe ok!

I didn't maintain my answers for quite a long time. I know I should re-visit, but need more courage

The more i look at it, the more i come to dislike gnome stuff in general
except for a few things

@edwardtorvalds hi. As far as I know, hotspot things are very much hardware dependent. You should make sure these works in Windows or other OSes

@Anwar haha why is courage needed?

too many answers...

8:37 AM
haha long job yes

sometimes i get upvote on old answers, and re-read them; i often think "I could have done it much , much more different today. Oh, that was unnecessary, and this could be rewritten in shorter manner"

and I need testing on newer releases. but it's not possible for my current setup

I also have to change my html formatting to markdown in a few old ones

I confess to having dumped gnome terminal a while back: Sakura has been my best friend for some time...

@Serg I always edit when that happens
@andrew.46 there's a terminal emulator called cherry blossom??

8:38 AM
In these days of absence , I only updated 1 or 2 answers after notified from other readers comment

That is what it means

@Zanna yup , i used to use that one
Sakura is pretty cool, minimalistic

cherry blossom?? how do i install it?

That is what it means?
Keyboards dying here :(

@Anwar it's called Sakura. Sakura in japanese means cherry blossom
sudo apt-get install sakura

8:40 AM
ohh... got it. thanks

>:)

well, I've been bothered by sudo: unable to resolve host anwar-pc error since i changed the hostname with hostnamectl. Any solution?

do /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname match?

@Anwar Possible duplicate of askubuntu.com/q/59458/295286

Thank you. The culprit was /etc/hosts file retaining old value

Aeroplane mode

@ParanoidPanda it disables hardware that's all I know :P

When i enable bluetooth my tooth becomes blue

user136984
@Zanna: It says it is inactive.

user136984
That is something I have noticed disappears from my list of possible connections when I turn that mode on, but I'm curious about what else it does.

I wonder if aeroplane mode is a systemd .target
do systemctl list-unit-files | grep target

that seems weird...
afaik I have no flight mode

no

Perhaps have a look through all of your settings? It should be there somewhere, I'd be very surprised if it wasn't.

Yes, I think someone has just been staring random things which they agree with or something like that. I wish there was some sort of page with guidelines about the star wall because seriously some people just don't get it.

It's funny to think how soon 16.10 is to being released! :D

how did it get to September already?

user136984
It just doesn't feel right because normally when a new release is nearing completion there is much hype about it, however there doesn't seem to be anything new in it which people are talking about.

@Zanna time flies , while we humans crawl around

user136984
9:42 AM
I hope we haven't got to a stage where there is nothing really to add/change?

sure is cold outside at night

@ParanoidPanda I don't think it's possible :) "everything is changing around us"

user136984
Well, yes, there will be package updates etc, but I mean like big changes to the DE and internal workings like there were up to 15.04.

@NathanOsman Launchpad question. i wanna fork a project , but unlike github i don't see an easy option for that on lp. so how can one do that ?

@Serg there's no policy sin e there's no way of knowing who downvoted.
@Rinzwind I deleted the question tagged with it, the tag should age away by itself now.

@terdon \o/ @zanna

9:59 AM
^_^ thanks @terdon @Rinzwind

testing?
okay
I really need to change ISP's

@terdon i just find it strikingly odd that Thor's two posts, accepted one and non-accepted one , both have no downvotes, while mine and other guys both have -1 , even though clearly both work and have no issues

This modem is possesed man
It keeps turning off

in fact sp asic, the other guy, gave sed solution, which is what OP said they prefer

@Serg nevertheless, there's nothing we can do.

10:02 AM
understandable

commitable
wait, uncommitable
@Serg can you feel the taste slowly creep in while watching above photo?

user136984
Is anyone else having any trouble connecting to the Ubuntu wiki site?

@Serg hehe I think I answered a question somewhere where user asks "can I do this with grep or sed?" and I write "you can do with grep not very well like this and with sed quite well like this" and someone else writes " you can do with awk like this" and OP "accepts" (comments to say they liked it more, but didn't actually click the tick) awk solution (rightly, as it was shorter and easier to understand)

@Edity oh yes . . . while this is supposed to be chocolate, the color more reminds me of caramel though

lol

10:08 AM
@Zanna in this case, the issue isn't what OP prefers, really. I already answered after the question got accepted answer. What irks me is that mine and other person got downvote with no explanation, which really "smelled" to me like someone trying to make their answer look better or just downgrate the other answers

yeah I get it, sorry that happened, was just sharing my own amusement with vaguely related situation

@ParanoidPanda You mean viewing or logging in?

user136984
@ByteCommander: Viewing, but it seems to be working fine now.

And with that situation that you mention, well , OP doesn't always know there's better way, so they ask for sed or grep first, but then someone throws in one-line awk or perl and suddenly they realize that's way better than what they wanted really

user136984
I just couldn't connect for a few minutes.

10:15 AM
@Serg yes very true

The Ubuntu wiki site has always been crappy.

user136984
Do you think they are going to fix it up at some point?

Many parts are totally outdated, and logging in takes hours in Firefox (minutes in Chromium).

user136984
I think I heard at some point that they are planning it as now basically nobody maintains the pages, in fact, I am being forced to maintain the pages I care about! :D

I think it's abandoned and nobody really dares to fix all the mess left.

user136984
10:16 AM
@ByteCommander: Hours? I'm on Firefox and it doesn't take more than a few seconds for me.

Goodnight

user136984
I just keep the really important release related pages as up to date as I can though I can't deal with more than a few pages.

user136984
I think they shouldn't have a wiki and should just have a documentation site.

user136984
That would be better.

@ParanoidPanda someone answered your aeroplane question :)

10:20 AM
@ParanoidPanda When I once logged in the first time there to fix a typo I encountered, it took eternities in Firefox. I then aborted and tried in Chromium, which was still slow, but bearable.
Anybody good with hard disks?
This guy's disk is behaving extremely strangely.

Q: Recovering data from an encrypted hard drive

inblankMy old laptop processor has collapsed last morning, but the hard drive is still working, as well as the RAM sticks (at least, there's no evidence of them not working). When my brother made the Ubuntu installation, he chose to encrypt the home folder. So, whenever I try to use the hard drive on a...

(he does not want to recover data, just make the formerly encrypted HDD usable normally again)

I thought it was you who was good with that stuff

I thought so too until now.
If Fabby was here, I'd ask him.
Not sure who else is good with that stuff.

user136984
@ByteCommander: Don't you have Fabby on Tox or something?

user136984
Anyway, he would say to make a backup. :P

It is encrypted and the password is lost, so no backup anyway.
Just make the HDD behave like a HDD again.

10:29 AM
I wonder, if you can recover data from an encrypted partition without password, why do we need encryption at all?

According to askubuntu.com/tags/hard-drive/topusers I'm #21 of the top answerers.

\o morning Ian

10:49 AM
hey @Serg, how you're doing man?

i'm alright, curiosity kept me awake :)
i'm in bed now, though, ready to sleep

I'm about to go sleep too, just got back from work
almost 8am here

4:53 AM

damn, what were you curious about to be awake so long? haha
btw, did you start with Ruby?

No, not quite. I just did a few one-liners here and there, i figured out it has shell much like python, but haven't dived into it too deep

10:56 AM
I've read the first 15 chapters of the book, but so far reaaaaally beginner stuff

As for curious stuff, i figured out another script ( which i might be working on tomorrow ) and there was an interesting historical question about Plan 9 OS on unix.stackexchange.com

what is Plan 9?

It's an OS, by same guys that made Unix

got it
man, I think I'll read a bit of Ruby everyday, but can't really commit to study it hard
because I didn't finish the other 2 books yet, kinda stuck on some chapters
but since at least the basics sound really simple, I'll read a bit of it when I have time

Other two ? I know you were working on C book, what's the other one ?

11:00 AM
Network Protocols
I've been on this for waaay too long

oh, ok

but it's dense stuff
with C I could read quite fast, but with this book I get stuck in a page trying to fit the pieces sometimes
too many details, specially on TCP

Speaking of protocols and networks, Im taking a class on Data Communication this fall, so we're gonna be studying basics of all that stuff
quite excited
And due to classes and stuff, i'll probably will be writing less answers

nice! If you have some doubt I'm available, even though I think it's easier for you to answer my doubts on this matter than the other way around haha

well, i haven't even started with this yet, so I guess you're probably way ahead of me :)

11:07 AM
I'm reading a bit about Gtk, finally I think I understand a bit of all those GNOME, Gtk, KDE, Qt, Unity terminology
it always sounded a bit complicated because I didn't know who did what

Are you going to try writing some Gtk apps ?

I think so, just gotta figure out something useful to code :)
for now I'm just playing around to see how it works, getting the basics

Yes, that's the biggest issue for me,too.I want my code be useful. I could keep making indicators, but I need ideas that people will find practical and useful

have you ever used the appindicator library with C?

Nope. I only copied example online and tried to compile it. Took me forever to figure it out, but i finally did find the proper way to do it online.
Python makes it much much easier to make indicators
With C , I'd need to study gtk stuff first before going into indicators.

11:18 AM
pro side of scripting languages
con is the speed, big programs tend to get reeeeally slow on them
you don't need gtk on python to work with appindicators?

I do need Gtk stuff in python as well, but it's far simpler.

I think you will get it easy on C
python probably uses a wrapper, but the Gtk objects and routines should follow the same guidelines on both

Everything just takes time to figure out.
Anyway, i'll go sleep now
o/ have yourself a good day/evening/whatever , chat folks !

alright, good night Serg, talk to you later!

Serg GoodNight don't let the code byte! :D
IanC Hello! :)

11:28 AM
hey Henry, how you're doing?

why just ok? something happened (if you don't mind me asking of course!)?

Ok was the fastest thing to say.

ooh right haha

@edwinksl added a note

11:40 AM
I just spent two hours installing Windows 10 in a VM and now I don't really know what to do with it.

@Takkat try to break it

it was so nice to me, said "Hi. Glad you're here!"

@ByteCommander hmm?
disk smells like it is broken :P

@Takkat with a fading color background for 20 minutes? :P

@Zacharee1 yeah fading in an out of the blue it did.

11:43 AM
@Takkat format c: ?

I think it was lying.
@Rinzwind I wait a bit with that...

no that was sarcasm!

@Takkat I spent half of a day trying to installing windows 10 in a VM and had to do it all over again the next day.

Who is Cortana in the Ubuntu world... Rinzwind perhaps?

nope

user136984

I've asked this many times, but that's just because I really want to find something new in it! :D

welp
Mir and Unity 8 still aren't coming

user136984
I think that Ubuntu GNOME's gnome3-staging PPA is going to start having Wayland by default, but I don't know if that is such a good idea because let's just say that last time I tried Wayland my machine exploded. :P

PuTTY needs to stop disconnecting when I'm running apt-get

wait could I?
yes

user136984
12:45 PM
@Zanna: What's MATE like by the way?

It's grown on me, I like it
Not as fancy as gnome shell

user136984
I tried it briefly a few times, but it was too small for me.

But I'm inclined towards minimal like xfce4
I like the themes a lot
In mate

user136984
Isn't it just like using GNOME2?

Yeah
Everything is easy to find and understand like xfce, not like unity or plasma

user136984
12:49 PM
I understand that the project is still rather young though and a lot is planned? Or have they got most of the features they want in now?

Their thing has been getting gtk3 support in place Afaik, that's done now & will be default in ubuntu 16.10
I've installed gtk 3, nothing bad happened...
Their goal is to keep the gnome 2 metaphor and just keep up with new apps etc
At work now xxx

user136984
Don't you get a bit board of the GNOME2 design after a while?
