12:00 AM
Ctrl A switches instances I think

no, I mean the shortcuts to go to virtual terminals, and then back to GUI
sorry, called them VTs and I'm not even sure people call them that way haha
what the hell
my virtual terminals are not working O.O

34
Q: Why does switching to the tty give me a blank screen?

SeanOAfter booting to the GUI in 12.04, I attempt to move to the virtual terminal (or shell, or tty) via Ctrl-Alt-F1 (F1 through F6), and the screen remains blank. I'm tried all 6 tty instances and the results are the same. Ctrl-alt-F7 brings me back to the GUI without a problem. Any thoughts?

maybe resolution issue, I'll try it later to see if it works

Uh
Fglrx or fglrx-core guys?

Oli
nvidia

12:12 AM
-.-
Seriously I cannot boot
stopping user manager for uid 120
also my /etc/resolv.conf doesnt exist

@JamesTobin do you want nitpicking?
beause i can offer some limited advice on those lists.
sadly, mostly criticisms... but...

go ahead :)

12:19 AM
@JamesTobin "gaming computers" is sort of a... restricted term.
Meaning, they have a dedicated graphics card of some sort -- typically ATI/Nvidia

oh?

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice with?

When I boot I get stopping user manager for uid 120

yeah. even with a good processor, games are often bottlenecked by the graphics card. If a PC does't have a graphics card, or has an Intel on-chip card, it's not really meant for heavy gaming

they do have dedicated graphics cards inside
the Dell has AMD graphics

12:20 AM
you should add those to the listing then.

the acer has intel graphics

those specs are very important to someone buying a gaming computer
that, and linux does get viruses occasionally. Very rare, but it can happen.
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice That's normal.

But the boot stops there

@KazWolfe not viruses. Trojans but not viruses

oh.

12:22 AM
Im installing gnome as a package right now incase it was damaged

@JamesTobin ehh, debatable. we can get into a very long argument about that, but i have a lot of code to write

Ill see if that helps

Open a terminal (TTY1) and set lightdm as the default again

Ew
Im in recovery mode right now ill do that I guess
Whats le command I noob

i would hazard a guess that gdm doesn't like you

12:25 AM
:(
sudo dpkg --configure lightdm?

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

Restarting now
Okay, it worked. Kinda
Only 1 monitor
OH GOD
my main monitor isnt there
I dont have my sidebar
damn fglrx is broken

in 16.04? yes

Fuck!!!! I can't do anything with my installation GREAT
And there's no way to fix it?

@Serg Did you start learning Ruby already?

12:44 AM
Fuck Canonical

blasphemy!!

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice that sucks
should have searched on AU first

If they're gonna fucking get rid of support for AMD cards, they can fucking bite me
Im not buying a new graphics card so I can use a fucking OS
@edwinksl I shouldn't HAVE HAD TO BECAUSE CANONICAL SHOULDNT HAVE BEEN A BUNCH OF LAZY ASSES AND NOT MADE SUPPORT FOR AMD CARDS

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Please calm your language a bit, my finger is twitching around the flag button...

flag me, please, I really don't care anymore. I'm giving up on Ubuntu

12:49 AM
maybe stupid question, but isn't this going to be an issue on other linux distros too?

This is sad, but no reason to leave this community as an asshat.

thought drivers were either built in kernel or compiled in modules

sad? No this is retarded
they completely screwed over AMD users

and I see no reason a distro would have an AMD module and another wouldn't

Which is why Windows

12:50 AM
calm down

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice lol, it's not Canonical's fault

Why should I? I spent 5 hours trying to install an update that people said would just look bad, but no! It turns out I can't FUCKING USE IT

Xorg 1.18 broke fglrx compatibility
Every version of Linux with Xorg 1.18 is unsupported
This is AMD's issue

oh nice amd lord is here to help out :P

"Canonical will not be supporting the fglrx/Catalyst Linux driver in their archive beginning with Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus."

12:52 AM
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice maybe read up on it. They said that because they were unwilling to create their own driver for AMD
because that's AMD's job

But Nvidia, suuure
Cause why give a fuck about AMD

and if Canonical made a driver, it would have to be supported for 5 years, even if AMD made one
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Listen to me very carefully: This is NOT Canonical's fault
This is the fault of the Xorg dev team
Please calm down

I don't care who's fault it is. I honestly can't be bothered to fix something every goddamn minute when I'm using Ubuntu, one thing or another, this shit is ALWAYS broken

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice It works fine for me. This is an issue you need to take up with AMD

@Seth Great you're just arriving. Can you please clean up some F-words in the posts above?

12:54 AM
Oh yes

@ByteCommander among other things :p

Because AMD will listen

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice exactly.
AMD doesn't care
This is why you stick with Intel or opt for NVIDIA

THATS SO HELPFUL! OMG U WANT A MEDAL!?!?!?!

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice fixing stuff builds charecter.
also, calm down please.

12:55 AM
This is why NVIDIA is the preferred brand for Linux gamers; AMD drops support for cards that are 1.5 years old

THANKS THAT'S SO HELPFUL
Who doesn't have a spare graphics card lying around?
Oh right
EVERYONE

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice OK, what is your problem? That is the situation. I'm almost certain I told you that AMD would not work on 16.04. You should also know that upgrades never work well if you have modified system files

dude, stop trowing your frustration on people that has nothing to do with it
go get windows and shut up

Hey David, I know you're frustrated but this outburst is not going to help your situation here :)

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice programmers.

12:56 AM
@Seth good luck :/

Also, there is a lot more involved in this situation than Canonical just deciding to drop support for AMD cards.. Like, a lot more ;)

also, calm down, please

@Seth Canonical didn't even drop support. Xorg did. It's every Linux version that uses Xorg.

@Zacharee1 Case in point.

@DavidCole Amd is hard at working on making it compatible with 16.04 but it takes time.

12:57 AM
Unfortunately, the timing of support droppage was a little unfortunate, since 16.04 is LTS
@WildMan AMD has made AMDGPU-PRO, which works on cards maybe 8 months and newer

Hi @WildMan!

But I don't think they're going further :/

anyway why not focus on fixing your system for now

<-- just bought a Nexus 5X

@Seth oooh

12:58 AM
If I do recall Seth told me 16.04 would work. And I've told you my problem. The driver isn't loading my main monitor, so any control I had over my installation is gone, and everything is off screen, Terminal opens on second monitor, so does anything else, and I CAN'T FIX IT WHEN THERE'S NO DAMN COMPATIBLE DRIVER EDWIN

Enjoying your freedom from Verizon? @Seth
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice If you uninstall fglrx, which the upgrade should have done, then you'll have better luck

well I just got it 10 minutes ago, but I definitely intend to! :D

@Seth Put CM on it!!!

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice zach has a q&a that may help. have you seen it yet?

12:59 AM
@Zacharee1 I kinda want nougat :P

@Seth hello, I have a friend doing work in that area right now and they are making great progress.

@WildMan sweet! I am very happy that AMD is actually putting work into their linux drivers.

@Seth I think there's a CM14 build out there for the 5X, but it's buggy as hell

My last laptop had Nvidia and it was a huge pain.

@WildMan wait, they're actually working on it?
That's something to look forward to!

1:00 AM
@Zacharee1 nope just CM13.

@WildMan I have a Radeon 250X There's no way in hell that their drivers will support my card

@Seth me too, I have a card that i not supported yet but will be soon

@Seth darn. Must've been the 7 then

they are a good company

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice if what @WildMan is saying is true, then I think there will be support coming
@WildMan what about them dropping support for 2 year old cards about a year ago?

1:01 AM
Not for cards as old as mine

A lot of people weren't happy

Let me see if I can find a link

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Radeon 250X? What is it? Radeon R7 250X?

I have a 260x
the lowest supported model of the PRO driver os 270x
you're not far behind

1:03 AM
Too bad I can't use any graphical things

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice reinstall. It's not hard. We also recommended you do that too, didn't we?

God no
I have 600 GB worth of stuff
I am NOT reinstalling

Then you read the many guides that show how to separate your home directory and /

Ugh what does that even mean
I'm so done with this
This OS is so high maintenance
See I joke about users going back to Windows but after the shit Canonical calls an OS made me spend 5 hours without a single warning or error then did this, I can see why they do

create a partition for your stuff with gparted, and don't format it on the reinstall

1:08 AM
I CANT
I DONT HAVE ACCESS TO GPARTED

LIVE CD
WHY ARE WE TALKING IN CAPS

or liveusb
you would have to do it from there anyways

This is stupidly complicated

because it's highly unrecommended to split partitions while you're using them
it's quite simple, I might find a link to a guide

Also which damn version am I installing?

1:10 AM
what are we talking about

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD Nothing.

windows? linux? mac?

David, last warning. Watch your language and tone please or you won't end up getting any help. Thanks.

you resize a partition, put your stuff on this new partition, reinstall system on the other one

1:11 AM
I really don't need help. The people who made Ubuntu, need some serious help, me however, I need an operating system I don't have to spend hours fixing every time I need to use it.
That's what I need

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice See, I installed Ubuntu on someone's computer who was entirely new to Linux. You know what happened? Nothing. They enjoyed it.
Now where is that "Linux allows you to shoot yourself in the foot" quote @Seth

Nice story, but guess what
I don't care
Ya know why
Because something DID happen

man, I thought I was a bit harsh on you a few minutes ago, but you're too childish. Everyone is trying to help you, even though you're being such an (less-offensive-word) to everyone for free
just go solve it by yourself then, nobody needs to waste time trying to help someone that keeps insulting everyone

watch your language, there is a moderator

Im sorry if Im being tempermental, this is just honestly annoying.

1:13 AM
Temperamental??
uh, no....

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD meh, people should be polite and nice even when there's no elected responsible adult mod here.

I gotta go get dinner, mull over everything

eddited @ƎpᴉʇʎXD haha

@JourneymanGeek lol, "responsible"
:p

started development of my soon-to-be released andrioid rom!

1:15 AM
@Zacharee1 yup. total "airquotes" responsible ;p

my bad, I think putting * on words don't make them appropriate :p

:p

hmm
nexus 5 or 7
lollipop or kitkat

Nexus 5

sure ?

1:17 AM
then you get Nougat

i'm feeling hungry now
kitkat or lollipop?
HERM...

sigh
eat food before candy

Bacon!

That means you have to suffer through an Apple or two before you get your KitKats and Marshmallows

lol

1:18 AM
should I scrap the pencilOS name and replace it with BaconOS
LOL

YES

hm, anyone know how to check the manufacture date on the 5X?

OUI

sure then
baconOS it is

@Seth Settings>>About maybe

1:19 AM
I'm thinking about ressucitating my desktop

and it will have a system default bacon background
makes the flasher want to eat bacon

@IanC ew desktops

I blowed up my ATX power supply, hopefully the rest is still alive

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD give them a link to buy bacon online in the About page :p

@Zacharee1 nothing obvious.

1:19 AM
STOP WITH THE ew

@IanC there's a reasonable chance it is

@IanC "blew" but nice :p

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD ew

There's a date of Nov. 2 2015 under the kernel version, but that's it.

1:20 AM
@Zacharee1 ew ew ew ew ew

I think it is, because it even booted when I simply changed the switch from 110 to 220v

@Zacharee1 are you a laptop toteing plebian peasant? ;p

at least for a while

@JourneymanGeek I want a desktop, but I have two homes and I board during the school week, so I'd need three

@IanC most PSUs with that switch are old or crap.

1:20 AM
I think mine is both

and I'd probably buy another crappy one

@Seth
> First three numbers of the serial number. The first number is the last digit of the year and the next two are the month.

my desktop isn't really next gen
I think its an intel core 2 duo

most of the time I've blown up PSUs, (I've done it twice) the rest of the system was fine

1:21 AM
@IanC chokes
@JourneymanGeek this sounds fun. How can I blow up my PSU?

Triple moderators!

@Zacharee1 good enough for basic stuff with a few small tweaks

@Zacharee1 Um, 010?

@Seth 2000 October :p

@Zacharee1 one was a old PIII, about 10 years old at that point.

1:22 AM
OK, so it isn't that
@JourneymanGeek o_O

@Zacharee1 Pretty sure that only applies to the Nexus 5. Not the 5X.

one of the VRMs just blew up in use.

@Seth I hoped it would be for all :(

man, I can't describe the feeling I had when I blew my PSU

the other was when I was 14 and wondered what would happen if you clamped a HDD magnet on both sides of the power cable and moved it...

1:23 AM
I had just spent months trying to figure out what was wrong with my computer, that was rebooting by itself, some hardware issue

@IanC "Oh Snap"
looool
that sounds like the PSU

@JourneymanGeek ... * 10000000

then, when everything was right, the computer was perfect, I turned it on with the switch on the wrong voltage

@IanC noice

and it blew up, like a gun shooting and some white smoke came out of it

1:24 AM
Does Brazil use 110 or 220?

both!!!

I guess 220
@IanC but for outlets and such

depends on the city
on the one I used to live it was 110, on the one I'm living now it is 220

The US uses both, but we only use 220 for higher power stuff, although apparently, houses get -120,gnd,+120 in
@IanC weird

@IanC I used to use super shitty PSUs, but getting a bronze or better might be a good compromise over your andyson or other strange chinese brands.

1:26 AM
bronze is a PSU brand? I used to buy some so crappy ones I never knew the brand of them :p

bronze is an efficency rating

News: Edity's soon to be released Android ROM is officially called baconOS

I think my desktop has a seasonic M12II
good 'midrange' PSU

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD what device
@JourneymanGeek now PSUs are graded?

It will be released on the nexus 5 first :)
Then S3 mini

1:27 AM
Once I find one I'm thinking about buying I'll share it with you, just for a feedback on if it's worth it

ahh

then s5 and so on

Note 4 per'aps?
Verizon to be specific?

It's hard
I will come up with a plan later

@Zacharee1 works on the 6P, but I couldn't find a "barcodes" section in fastboot.

1:28 AM
coughs

@Seth sigh

i am on verizon and i feel like a loser

@Seth maybe it was just never manufactured
@edwinksl THE BIG LLLLLLL

the desktop configuration is kind of lame though, as I said, only a Core 2 Duo, SATA cheap HD, guess the best it has is the video card, which is kind of old too, Nvidia GT220 I think

@JourneymanGeek seasonic are nice

1:28 AM
@ThomasWard for gods sakes get a drink already
:p

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice this might help until the support is complete. help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver#Unsupported_chips

@Zacharee1 bzzt wrong guess
@Zacharee1 ill with bronchitis

@ThomasWard David?

coffee, duh

@ThomasWard For gods sakes get the codeine already

1:29 AM
@Zacharee1 E: Allergic

srsli

yes, you do NOT want to see what a reaction to codeine is like

For gods sakes get the medical marijuana already

think Morphine-grade altered mental state

noice

1:30 AM
UGH

in any case

@ThomasWard so prescription heroin? :p

KERNEL PANIC

how do you know it is morphine-grade? :P

maybe I should stop talking about narcotics....
@edwinksl he knows... (LennyFace)

1:30 AM
@Zacharee1 lol.
@edwinksl 'cause I"ve had morphine before (substantially broken bones), and I"ve had codeine before long after the morphine, and it presented with similar altered states

@Zacharee1 has PA gone 420blazeit yet

@edwinksl lolno

@JourneymanGeek Seasonics are good, though I tend to need more power with workstation machines and the builds I do. Bought a lot of 5x Seasonic SS-650HT, which helped for the dual Xeon builds I had recently.
and will be powering my next workstation build too

@ThomasWard nasty, broken bones :(

Dual... Xeon....

1:32 AM
@Zacharee1 Ohh, the first 3 digits thing is on the box.. Unfortunately the seller sent it in a different box :/

@ThomasWard Its a regular, single processor + high end video card build

GIMMEH TEH XEONZ

@Zacharee1 quad-core + hyperthreading, 2.4 GHz.

@Seth lol
@ThomasWard eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

@Zacharee1 yummy ECC RAM

1:33 AM
oh god ecc
the memories
the nightmares

@JourneymanGeek indeed. My next machine for my own use is going to be a Xeon build though, 2x Xeon 8-cores, 64GB ECC RAM, and enough expansion space for many cards o.O

gotta get ready for work folks, pleasure talking to you

that'll be my gaming machine, eventually

have a good night!

My dad got ahold of an old Solaris server. It had like 4x1GB in it DDR2, but IT WAS ECC

1:34 AM
@ThomasWard wow what do you play

I was so sad

that is some serious firepower

right now i can't even play Call of Duty, my system is crap
@edwinksl Multiple purpose machines
not just a gaming rig
though it'd make a fierce one

@ThomasWard has a choking fit and dies from excitement

@Zacharee1 SPARC or x86?

1:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek dunno
@ThomasWard I'd say ~100FPS in MC if you're lucky :p

ooh, you should Hackintosh it!

i was going to go after dual graphics cards though :P
so............
yeah, not a tiny build

Q: Root filesystem disk image as OverlayFS upperdir

Michael SpencerTL;DR — Is it possible to to union-mount an existing disk image containing a root filesystem to the upperdir of an overlayfs mount? I'm trying to union mount some old disk images on an Ubuntu 16.04 machine and have run into a bit of trouble. I have some old automation scripts that used overlayf...

well then 50FPS @ThomasWard

1:36 AM
BIG BEEFY EVIL BUILD :P
@Zacharee1 lol

@ThomasWard how much is it going to cost

'bout $900, i'm estimating

@edwinksl probably about a MacBook Air
omg
I was being sarcastic @ThomasWard

about the same price as my do-it-myself hypervisor :P
@Zacharee1 :P I'm not

That's just sad, Apple
helu evri1
ken ai haz f33 repz
ai n33d 140
plz

1:39 AM
ayy, is an iPhone 7 with airpods at the same price point as thomasward's beefy builds

@edwinksl ikr. The highest tier with everything is $1120-ish

@edwinksl airpods with only 5hr battery life?
better off getting the iPhone 7 and a pair of Jaybird bluebuds
which have about 12 hours use-time, and 24 hrs. standby (my observations)

Post 2 talks about the amd and Canonical working on two open source drivers. The person who wrote the post tests new graphic cards and drivers for compatibility with ubuntu. ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2327075

@ThomasWard or just avoid the iPhone 7?
