Q: Posting useful online content from non Stack Exchange site to askubuntu

ranchoIf I some very useful post regarding Ubuntu on some non Stack Exchange site is it alright to modify it to make it more relevant and then post it here?

@RPiAwesomeness Very nice.

Thanks :)
Hopefully I can enter it in the 16.10 wallpaper contest

i know this is not the best play to say this, but my parents are so goddamn stupid
buy blinders that are short for the window and probably cost money ? sure, who cares
but buy a few things that are necessary ? noooooooo
too expensive,we need to save money

@RPiAwesomeness That's a good idea.

Q: Necessity for suffrage and vox populi badge

ranchoMany new users will simply close their eyes and go on upvoting regardless of why they are or for what they are upvoting. It is because that they want the badges. So why do these two badges exist?

^makes perfect sense

so... two wing?

1:13 AM
@ParanoidPanda Rebooting fixed it.

1:51 AM
@Serg parents indeed don't always make the best decisions

2:04 AM
meta.se has a rep system?

think so

FINALLY

@edwinksl meh, i am just tired for today. I don't even care what decisions they make.

the tablet shipped!
8:54PM

tablet hypuuuu

2:10 AM
@Zacharee1 which one did you get

wat
@Serg SM-T813

askubuntu.com/questions/806337/… i am not sure why apt-get install -f would suggest installing python unless OP uninstalled python previously?

nice, 9.7 inch, 32 GB

yurp
I also got a 128GB SD card for it: $34

i hate the samsung bloatware though

2:14 AM
@edwinksl since this isn't a carrier device, I can just root it, unlock the bootloader and install the debloated TouchWiz ROM

that ^

good

yay, got my bag...now I can hall all my junk into work in one trip

unlocked tablets and phones are the best

and the same person who made the ROM I might end up installing is also working on a CM build
@TheXed haul :p
@Serg yesh

2:15 AM
yes haul...
My bag did not come with grammar check :-P

really?
should've gotten the latest Samsung

return the bag then

the Galaxy Bag S3 has Google built in

@edwinksl I will just have to install a dictionary.
2

@TheXed good old fashioned paper and ink

2:18 AM
@Zacharee1 actually I do have 2 pins/stylus in it, and a notebook (that I forgot at work, because it wasn't in my bag)

pens?

ink pens.

you need that new Bag

Yeah I kinda outgrew my laptop bag...

@Zacharee1 i just bought it. SHIPPED 10:19PM

2:20 AM
lol

I couldn't fit the tone tracer, rj-45 connector, and rj-45 ends in it...
and my cable tester...
and...and...and....
Actually I had to take my Laptop out to fit everything else in.

lol

So I was walking around with my laptop bag with everything in it but my laptop... (silly)

^sorry but i loled

Yeah it made me lol too when I just thought about it...

2:27 AM
@CodeX so apparently i misunderstood your questions. You asked for scrolling speed, but my script only does pointer speed. however, i will fix that. I've installed imwheel and will include that into my script. However, that will take some time to fix. Especially since tomorrow i have to take care of some things outside of AskUbuntu
feel free to unaccept the answer

Anyone install the new Windows 10 update?

running it now

I am downloading...

the one that comes with WSL?

2:33 AM
WSL?

windows subsystem for linux

Oh Bash for Windows...
Yeah I use it to SSH into my RPI's...
since windows has no native ssh client...

man, I wanted to learn C again, but not in the mood of starting from scratch

just read K&R?

K&R?

2:41 AM
iirc that book is pretty concise
The C Programming Language (sometimes referred to as K&R, after its authors' initials) is a well-known computer programming book written by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, the latter of whom originally designed and implemented the language, as well as co-designed the Unix operating system with which development of the language was closely intertwined. The book was central to the development and popularization of the C programming language and is still widely read and used today. Because the book was co-authored by the original language designer, and because the first edition of the book served...

will take a look
I'll probably skip the early lessons
wanted to relearn some more advanced sintax stuff, review pointers
I was reading some sockets tutorial, could understand it quite well
but if I take a more complicated code I might get lost

That's the best book for refreshing C knowlege and learning a bit extra
There's one more
And one more

@Serg Perfect!! Thanks man!
I needed some material with linux focus too
back when I coded I was still on windows (dark days.. lol)

2:57 AM
@IanC by the way, wanna see the project i did for my C programming class ? it's been like 2 years and it kind of sucks, but it mimics ps command in a very simple way

sure!

Q: Reviewing - how much you do

ubashuThis is not a complaint, but a suggestion... As I now have access to statistics of the review queues, I find that users are commonly only reviewing e.g. 5 posts when there are 90 posts to review. So what I am saying is If you have the time to, please use up your reviews. If you are skipping the...

basically it reads all process directories in /proc and gets info about each process

@Serg Nice! There are some things I'm not familiar with in the code but I can get the program flow
i.e. I'm not sure, but probably struct dirent is a struct defined in one of those headers, with some directories information?

3:07 AM
yeah, dirent structure belongs to dirent.h . Basically library for reading directories
i had to research a lot at that time, so when I got A for that project, i was really happy
my hard work paid off

you did this for college?

yes

cool, what course?

Advanced Technical Programming, EET 2370 . The stuff we learned in that class was very basic. We only touched linked list , some sorting and searching. Numerical integration. But otherwise - good intro course
I failed it twice though. First because it was hard, second time because of my own stupidity
Third time i took that class, was after i started learning Linux
So I basically passed that class with nano and gcc
I hated Visual Studio , so much. Especially after during exam it complained about scanf function
Luckly , professor let me use cygwin , gcc, and nano for the rest of the course

I wish I was as involved in learning linux a few years back as I am now, would probably know lots of cool stuff by now

3:14 AM
People were looking at me like , " That guy is doing everything in command line , what the heck ? "
Yeah, i regret i havent started learning Linux earlier

I can see how much windows can hold a programmer back

it brought me much more happiness in general

I was always curious about how things happened in lower layers, and windows kind of hides this from you
linux is freedom in that sense, you can learn how everything operates

@Serg yeah I know xD I thought I will fix it myself so didn't further bother you

and change it if you want
well, I'm going to get some rest, afternoon shift tomorrow!
good night!

3:20 AM
@CodeX I decided that i will write a new script and add it as part of the answer. Same idea , but it will only have option for scroll speed. Because imwheel must have only one instance, I can only force just one window. The new script probably won't be able to operate on multiple ones. So for example, firefox can have fast scroll, but others will only have regular

@Serg I think we might be able to change it even without imwheel ... I have to play with xinput for that

there was a suspisious old wit outside my home
luckly he went away or else we wouldv'e called the cops on him

3:39 AM
@CodeX i can use xinput to slow down my mouse
but can't speed it up

3:56 AM
I don't think that's really from Marco...

@Serg yeah I tried it now . there is "Evdev Scrolling Distance" but the speed difference is very less

@NathanOsman lol

@NathanOsman SK T1 Marco Faker
Did you know: Nitroshare is more faster than my usb 3.0 drive

4:20 AM
Cool, that's pretty fast.

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD over network transfer?

4:23 AM
@TheXed Could be a local bridge too.

@NathanOsman sure, @ƎpᴉʇʎXD I love gigabit ethernet, but at work I have 10gig fiber :-P

however my gaming computer doesnt even care, instantly copying things.

LiFI looks pretty amazing

@TheXed 10gig copper is a coming thing I think

I love VPN's

4:26 AM
@JourneymanGeek hope so, fiber is expensive.

mm, fiber.
my isp provides it for 19.99 a month
( i no have it doe )

I have a gigabit network - it gets the job done.

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD I am talking 10gig fiber over the LAN...
so fast...

i wish 1TB wires exist in the future

Holy Smokes that would be amazing @ƎpᴉʇʎXD

4:29 AM
Be honest - how many times have you needed to transfer 1 TB and couldn't wait two seconds?

I use homeplug AV for backbone

nope @NathanOsman

Even system memory usually tops around 25-30 GB/s.

If we do major home renovations I need to see if we can get some ethernet cable laid in

4:31 AM
mouse wheel speed turns out to be quite difficult to configure
i can slow it down
but can't speed it up

well BBL

at least not without extra tools

@Serg My Microsoft mouse has a unique bug. If I use it in Windows and restart and boot Ubuntu, the scroll wheel sensitivity goes through the roof.
To fix it, all I have to do is unplug it and plug it back in.
Annoying. But it works :D

@JourneymanGeek I'll do it for a small fee...
I love running ethernet cable...

damn you cups drivers'

4:33 AM
@TheXed the problem's really with trunking/routing
and I think I'd move out before we renovate so meh

@JourneymanGeek just tell me where the cable needs to go...you can do whatever you want with it after that...

@TheXed My apartment is pretty big and kinda [ shaped. The problem is at the top end of the C ;p

Dude, I have ran cable in 100 year old buildings...surely your apartment has nothing on it...
buildings with towers and 10 foot tall ceilings...
I got this :-P

@TheXed I live in a large castle in Northern Ireland. WiFi in the dungeon is poor - can you do a cable run down there for me?

@NathanOsman yeah....I'll call in the Knights of the Round Table to assist...

4:39 AM
Sir Patrick is used to 100 Mbps and he is our most highly favored prisoner...
@TheXed You mean the knights of the routing table >:)
Ba-dum-tshhh...

Prince Arp wold be happy to help.

Hope he can get through my... firewall :)

I have CISCO ASDM installed...

[Insert joke about Prince Arp wearing AppArmor here.]

Err...I am mean he does...
Or should I say Sir VPN can help with that?
I am running out of bad puns....

4:43 AM
Sir VPN - you can't use his initials. That goes against protocol :)

#enable catapult
that is about the only cisco command I know...

echo "Call to arms against @TheXed!" | wall

cat million_dollars >treasury

All I have to do is find the incoming connection...cut cable...and you are toast...

Why does everyone want to touch my million dollars?

4:50 AM
ps -A -o pid | xargs kill -9

**pulls the plug

@TheXed Those are my million dollars and you can't have them. Because "chmod 0600", that's why.
@TheXed That does the same thing :D

Well you can't touch it anymore...

Oh, you pulled the plug on my machine?

On my machine...

4:51 AM
Ah.
I guess I win then?

Security through lack of access :-D
You can't access my machine, which means you can't do anything...
I think that means we are at an impasse...

You didn't say which plug.
Could just be a mouse or something.

the one that connects me to you...

Just the network cable? Lol.

I hope that is all...

Q: Gnome-terminal custom command and dynamic working directory

qzncThis is kind of a followup to another question. I use a custom command in my gnome-terminal profile (/usr/bin/fish). When using Ubuntu 14.04 a Ctrl-Shift-N opened a new gnome-terminal window in the same directory as the current terminal. With 16.04 this changed and now it always opens in $HOME. ...

So I just let it be and I let mods/high rep users handle this?

yup
I think so.

@ByteCommander: When running sudo update-grub I get:

user136984
/usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 36: /etc/default/grub: fsck.mode=force: not found

how did you edit the file?
You must append it to the whatever_linux_default line where you normally have"quiet splash"

user136984
I just edited it with vim and stuck the entry in at the bottom. Is that not what you're supposed to do? That's what I always do...

9:50 AM
No! Not at the bottom! >.<

user136984
Oh, so it's got to be inside the "" where "quiet splash" would normally be?

exactly.

>.<

and then update-grub and reboot.
after the reboot you can revert the changes again.
Or you boot from a live system and run e2fsck -f /dev/sda1 or something like that on the unmounted partition.

user136984
Right, will reboot now then...

@ParanoidPanda I haven't done that before this way, but looks okay. Where is your /home folder on?

I'm going to post a question on the main site on it, then I'll deal with the LiveUSB... Just so that anyone who could help knows about the issue.

Uh... What's that?
RAID?
Full disk encryption?
LVM?

@ByteCommander logical volume manager :=)

Oh, there it says it's LVM.

basically raid

10:16 AM
Well, I have no experience with that, so don't ask me how to fsck an LVM

same way :=)
fsck is just checking your journaling :P
then again lvm is overkill on a 1 500G disk :P

Q: Some files not showing up in Nautilus, but definitely are there

Paranoid PandaI have got the most strange problem, I downloaded 4 images, then cut and paste them using Nautilus into a sub-folder of my Documents area. I then closed Nautilus and went on with my normal business. However later on I needed to send the images to someone so I went into the folder with the images...

user136984
@Rinzwind: Well, next time I do a fresh install I won't install it with LVM, I just thought it would be useful but seems not... I've never actually used it and it just seems to confuse everybody! :D

user136984
Is it the same command from the LiveUSB though to check the filesystem?

I have no idea whether you can just e2fsck -f /dev/sda3 or whether that will break because sda3 is an LVM container...

10:28 AM
@ParanoidPanda not me. I have several online systems with lvm. 2 1TB disks with client data in raid and with mysql replication to make 2 similar instances so we can switch in an instant :-)
fsck.ext3 /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
@ByteCommander would be the command
NOT sda3 ;-)
you need the lv name shown at " lvdisplay" @ParanoidPanda
Time for some shopping BBL

user136984
@Rinzwind: Ok, thanks! :)

user136984
Do you guys think though that this is likely to be an issue with my filesystem? I mean, if Nautilus is the only program which can't see it, then isn't it more likely to be an issue with that?

user136984
I might install nemo and see if it's affected too.

user136984
How do I check what filesystem I am using?

user136984
Oh dear... I am hopeless when it comes to partitioning and filesystems... I know a bit about the former, but nothing much about the latter... :D

user136984
10:49 AM
Never mind, I figured it out...

user136984
The same issue is present in Nemo, but when I do a search for the files in either Nautilus or Nemo, they show up correctly and I can open them @Rinzwind @ByteCommander!

user136984
So this is all rather confusing now...

user136984
Why do all the crazy things always happen to me? :D

user136984
Whenever there has been a system that I have got, brand new and everything, that works for everyone else, it never works for me! I actually get quite worried when it does because it means the issue I will face is still yet to come and unknown... :P

user136984
But even if everything I have is identical to what the others have, my one will always break or not work properly.
