Q: What is a positive question record?

ubashuThe question says it all: What is a positive question record? You need this for the Curious badge, so what is it?

4:12 AM
Stay tuned. In a few minutes I will have something truly awesome to show you all.
Ta-da:
It may take a few seconds to load.
But I guarantee that will be the coolest thing you will see today.
And... and... if you have those red/blue z-anaglyph glasses. Well... let's just say it will be even cooler.
@ParanoidPanda ---^

@NathanOsman to some extend it's sort of creepy . I honestly expected a jumpscare . It still cool :D

4:30 AM
good morning altogether

what the f happened to ubuntu instruction guide it doesn't explain what to do with iso anymore

@Serg since I started with projecteuler.net I solved now 14 of the problems by reading it up myself and find a python solution to it :)

@edwinksl for windows

4:35 AM
you should have said that earlier
search this site if you need help

there are plenty of questions and answers for what you need to do

it just used to be easier for newcomers it isn't a bi deal for me

i expect burning an iso to be a basic skill

most computers don't have cd drives today and creating a thumbdrive iso isn't built into windows you need separate software

4:38 AM
and vast majority of windows users have installed separate software
for various purposes

my mom wouldn't know what to do

use rufus or have a longer read on pendrivelinux.com
morning @edwinksl :) hows life today?

well then i am sorry to say your mom isn't an "average" user

its ubuntu it should be the easiest distribution to use but its not

because you said so?

4:41 AM
yes exactly

@Videonauth just another day ;) where were you this past couple of days?

also don't like that ubuntu went over 700mb

summer flu struck me again hard this time
im not fully over it but sick meanwhile laying in bed

Lol

@Videonauth sounds nasty

4:45 AM
yeah it was tho
20 years of no flu at al and then two times in a row

William you can create a blog with step by step instructions about bootable USB stick

@CodeX there are so many already, please only let us reinvent the wheel once a year :p

@Videonauth but he doesn't seem to be satisfied with them xD

even me did one already how to install Linux on a stick via debootstrap, so no persistence install, a full install instead. I use such sticks for myself a load

@Serg dat customer service askubuntu.com/a/800885/15003 xD

Q: My Answer got downvoted and I updated it. Will downvotes go away?

waltinatorI answered What is the difference between hosts and hosts.deny? with a one-line answer (first line of my answer, basically RTFM). I got downvoted to -2 for my answer. I Edited and improved my answer (IMHO). Will the downvotes go away? Will the downvoters be told I changed my answer? I...

@edwinksl I am all about that customer service
i should do some of those Euler questions . . . but so far only AskUbantu questions excite me . . . . i'm all about excitement

ah Good

O_o

are there any hidden settings for the dock in ubuntu 16

5:11 AM
@Serg i love the questions there but you can as well find most solutions on the web so you have to have a good discipline to not look up simply the solution but to find your own way

I'm trying to fix some things they have changed since 12

@William if by hidden settings you mean placing launcher at the bottom of the screen, then yes, there's that setting, although it is not hidden
it was publicly announced looooong time ago

@Serg I mean like changing the expose behavior so it works like it did in 12

[ SmokeDetector ] Link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: there are tremendous quantities of success by rnardjuria on askubuntu.com

is anyone placing launcher at the bottom .. I tried it .. but it felt waste of screen space

5:16 AM
agreed wasted space in my opinion

5:29 AM
I used to think ubuntu had a headquarters in notrh carolina but it appears not anyone now what aspect of linux I might be remembering?

@CodeX I am. I actually like it. Thought it would be bad idea , since it's basically giving Windows fanboys what they want . But actually no, i'm glad devs decided to add this feature
@William well , compiz config settings manager allows changing the hide and unhide behavior/animation. Other than that , i don't think there's anything else hidden there

@Serg what about command line options are something similar

@Serg looks nice! I will try if I am not on mobile :)

how does this sites popularity compare to ubuntu forums?

@William Everything you do via GUI, can be done via command line. There's nothing that is hidden there

5:42 AM
@Serg sometimes some options are command line only though right
is there someone I can pay to figure this out

. . . . .

like geeksquad or apple care or even someone over the phone

My notify-osd has died for some reason . . . . I can't even restart it via killall

that is going to be my question possibly unless I can get some help

sure, ask it if you want . . .

5:52 AM
I have you own record approving this

but remember to make it specific. You ask for command line options and people will ask you " what kind of options " ? Unlike what you think , there's no easter eggs or magic options in Unity Launcher

@Serg no payable tech support question
I just want to pay someone to figure it out

Even if you pay some one , they will tell you same thing we can tell you for pretty much free

except nobody knows the answer
official tech support might

AskUbuntu is official support site for Canonical . And if you reach Canonical , they will send you here

5:56 AM
your joking what about paid support that canonical does?

See that ^
There's 24x7 support for enterprise ( meaning businesses ) , which is probably paid. But for community it's forum and AskUbuntu - that's it

@Serg how much for one day of enterpise?
or maybe 1 hour even

@Serg how's your 8 GB ram

@edwinksl lovely , still 0 swap used
@William I don't know, I'm not dealing with enterprise stuff. I'm a community user

sigh I wish ubuntu was more popular
I feel like the people who decide things in the community have no relationship to corporate decisions

6:05 AM
@edwinksl were you here the whole time ?

@Serg not really, i mean i am in chat but i am doing something else

I have contacted them about profesional support this will be interesting.

dammit notify-osd, y u no send notifications ?

where is autokey in ubuntu 16 I can't find it

what ?

6:15 AM
@Serg it is software I used in ubuntu 12 called autokey

@William the developers stopped working on it. See this launchpad.net/~cdekter/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
Last version is autokey 0.90.4-0~precise Chris D (2012-05-15)

@Serg how do I install that version

@William 'autokey-qt' (on KDE) 'autokey-gtk' (on GNOME) and all required dependencies will be installed for you.

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD command please

@William you can try downloading deb file from here , launchpad.net/~cdekter/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages , but be warned : if autokey wants dependencies, and you can't find them in 16.04 repositories - then you will have really really bad time fixing unmet dependency issue.
O_o couldn't make notify osd run. Ran my script again - the notify osd appears. WTF

notify-osd "bad luck"

For some romantic mood youtube.com/watch?v=lcOxhH8N3Bo

alas, no Finnish here. I have a little Portuguese & Farsi & French, sprinkling of a few others... I used to do admin & website management for a wholesaler & one of their clients was in Finland & I learned some greetings etc but I forgot them already
Speaking of Farsi I have had this song on repeat for the past 3 weeks youtube.com/watch?v=2teO5bwr01w although I'm sure I'm making a big mistake admitting to this

Farsi . . .wait is that Iranian ?

may I ask about the status of the lock keys indicator?

I merged the patch Bharawaj did for me , but the code on git is still the old one. I have it rewritten with AppIndicator3 API , but i still haven't commited it to git
I still need to add command line parameters
I plan to take care of it tomorrow , along with power indicator

:) thanks & thanks for introducing me to Wagakki! (makes me want to go get my face pierced...)

8:19 AM
Actually . . . let me commit the version without command line params first

9:03 AM
Good morning

good morning
AHH SO SPICY

Morning Arne

@ArneN. i don't think you want to provide links to cracked versions of software in your answer

Changed it

9:18 AM
@Serg Copied new script, run it, I get a warning:
lks-indicator.py:39: PyGIWarning: AppIndicator3 was imported without specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('AppIndicator3', '0.1') before import to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
and I only get a broken icon.

@ArneN. your URL still points to pirated software
@Zanna that warning is pretty harmless, nothing to worry

What about that @edwinksl ? :)

@Zanna ignore that warning. I think i know what's wrong with the icon. I'll need to fix that up.

@ArneN. thanks

sorry bout that

9:23 AM
@Serg oh no no ignore, my bad entirely
fixed it, saved it at wrong level

Oh, ok. I thought it was due to deb package

didn't use it... do you want me to test, or is testing not needed?

No , I can do it in my VMs

why do the installation instructions say download the .deb and run the included install script? do we not use dpkg?

9:37 AM
@Serg An Ubunut!

almighty ubunut

@Zanna sigh . . . I'll figure this out. I wasn't the one making deb and install.sh so i am not quite sure how they work together.
May the Nuts be with you ! the UbuNuts

@Serg sorry, please tell me where to go if I'm being a pain in the ass! I am only mentioning it to help debug, I'm not impatiently waiting for anything to happen. feel free to ignore <3

@Zanna Your questions and debugging are the most helpful . I am glad you do ask them questions, because they do make me think . Thank you. Also, do you have any requests for future indicators ? Feel free to ask. I think i will be doing more and more of those

If I think of anything, I will be sure to let you know :D

9:55 AM

welp, here goes my sleep schedule again . . .

:( for what it's worth, here's what works somewhat for me as a long term insomniac: always get up at the same time if at all possible. It doesn't matter when you go to bed, but if you regulate your wake-up time, fall-asleep time will follow

@Zanna Thanks

Q: What can be the disadvantages of having Windows alongside Ubuntu

LeonardoI want to have both OS on my laptop, is there any disadvantages I should take into consideration?

:=)

In my opinion there's no disadvantage except 1. Since he won't rely only on linux, he will not make as much effort to learn it as someone who depends on it completely

11:36 AM
@Rinzwind ah, I see.
and you managed to scare him off.

your computer is named after my favourite herb... — Zanna 2 mins ago
@Zanna mine too as you probably guessed :)
This was at a time when I was working with a guy from Tunisia who'd named his machine cumin. I figured I'd go for my Mediterranean heritage :)

didn't know people have favourites for herbs too.
Mine is mostly favourite sleeping time and stuff.

I like salt

Does anyone have good knowledge and a bit of time to help me resolve an issue for Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu 16.04 with Optimus IGP/CPU ? Tried everything, still doesn't work.

1:16 PM
@dbsso Please post a question on the site. That way it can help others as well.

2 hours later…
2:46 PM
@terdon I did, but the only answer I got was to use bumblebee or nvidia-prime when I was asking what driver I should use. Using nvidia-prime I can now switch between IGP/CPU depending on my needs. I've tried every drivers from 358 to 367, and none are working correctly. Some overheat the GPU, some have very low FPS etc.. In the end they always end up overheating/freezing/crashing the PC while playing. I'm even thinking on going back to W10, which doesn't please me.. But at least it was working

@dbsso Ah, OK, I saw the question now. I can't really help, I'm afraid though.

@terdon Is this possible that I will never run games on Ubuntu as good as it was running on W10 ? In that case I wouldn't spend weeks trying every drivers and settings possible for no results.

@ByteCommander wow, you have some serious graphics driver issues there.
Works for me in Chrome.
It looks like one of the textures is corrupt.
Could you try hard-reloading the page? (Usually Shift+ F5)

3:03 PM
@Zacharee1 any luck with that G2? I'm starting to get really motivated to get more than 8GB of space..

Thermal camera? That is pretty neat.

@Seth there's addon ones that work too

3:25 PM
@dbsso I really don't know, I've never played games on linux.

So this funny thing happened to me today... I went to a café I regularly go to and ordered a Quiche, however they told me that they did not have the Quiche that I had requested so I instead ordered a Falafel. I then ordered a Ginger Beer, but as they asked me what kind of Ginger Beer I completely forgot that I had ordered a Quiche.

user136984
So when they said "That will be £9.50" I was stumped, but out of politeness I didn't question it and just handed over the money as I know them well and don't believe they would so easily make such a big mistake.

user136984
I just assumed that "Wow, this must be just a very good quality Ginger Beer". But then they said "I'll bring it over to you" and it suddenly came back to me, I had ordered a Quiche! So that was fine, I went to sit down and awaited the arrival of my Quiche. I only remembered about the Falafel once it had arrived, but was at first quite shocked about its arrival! :D

user136984
And that was not the first crazy thing to happen to me that day... And it was not to be the last... :D

user136984
Wait, that wasn't today! That was yesterday (you see how confused I am)! I even thought it was still the 20th today! But more strange things did happen to me on that day, and more today! :D

6:30 PM
@ParanoidPanda your British is showing.
@Seth I can't find it. :/
Honestly, it might be worth it to just save up and get a new flagship. You'll be able to keep it longer too.

Maybe.
But I can't even update the apps at this point for lack of space -.-
I guess I could switch to the mostly sorta working GSIII, but then I'd be going down from 5.1 to 4.4.2.
