yeah i guess i suck at configuring fail2ban
it is supposed to block that crap

You copy the jail.conf to jail.local, then set your bantime and retry counts. My bantime is 604800 seconds (1 week) and only 3 retries.
Modify that in the jail.local file

bantime = 30758400

4:13 AM
Also make sure that you modify /etc/fail2ban/jail.d/defaults-debian.conf to enable the jails you want to have blocked.
[sshd]
enabled = true

[vsftp]
enabled = true

[apache-auth]
enabled = true
Those are the ones I have

actually fail2ban doesnt want to restart sec

Make sure you only enable the jails for things you have running. It will fail if you enable any that you don't have.

No file(s) found for glob /var/log/audit/audit.log

That's weird.

4:27 AM
@TheBrownOne Sorry, power went out.

well i now have shut down apache for now while i look into it

@Videonauth Good luck. I have to go for now. Chat with you later! Take care! :)

take care, i will figure this out surely :)

user139252

@jokerdino Sure it did :P

power went out and I shrugged and went to bed.
Still catching up on transcripts on multiple places. brb

mhmmm now it seems to be silence

user139252
I made spicy pickles. They were too spicy.

user139252
I'll bring them into work, maybe my coworkers will like them :P

5:35 AM
ok it seems i got rid of this haxxor

Hey, I am going to nominate myself.

huh ? ^.^so youre going to take two mod places then ?

Yes

well go for it :) even if its only for the lulz

I dont think I will win though. Don't worry.

6:00 AM
meanwhile i see it really relaxed

@Videonauth Approve

I have once installed Sparkleshare and the new description is better than the old one

FUL ACK
Close Votes are now below 400 :)

6:11 AM
I guess we should hold elections every other week to keep the review queue down and low.

Hi

@jokerdino hmm

and nice to have you here @MadMike.
Haven't seen you in chat before.

hehehe
well i do my review cue since im on the site daily to the max possible
just got the stuard badge the first time

And, I lost 260 rep last night. lol
Shame I didnt have very many fans.

6:15 AM
when i look at the comments on my nomnation post i feel already better :)
thought really it would more be negative

let me put you down

awww :(

@jokerdino thanks for the warm welcome. I love IRC-style chat. ;) Sadly me being here mostly means I'm on a procrastination-ride :P

don't we all?
This is not that similar to IRC. Stack Exchange chat is a bit different and has some features that you would love to have in other chats.

Yeah. Sometimes I wonder if that is how AU works :)
Is there some kind of list of all the features?

6:18 AM
for chat or the main site?

for chat

check the faq

@jokerdino thanks :)
Anyone knows why Seth isn't on the list of candidates?

because he is already a mod.

Well he is... how long is a mod elected then?

6:26 AM
for life

That's a pretty long time. Not that I mind Seth does a good job :)

Seth is not the only mod here, you know.
Besides, mods can also step down due to other pressing commitments.

Q: Election: minimum reputation/moderation requirements

Luís de SousaTwo years ago there were one or two nominations from users with low reputation and hardly any moderation track record. At the time this brought up a discussion on raising the minimum requirements for nomination. The 2016 election opened a few hours ago and there are already 3 nominations with sc...

@jokerdino You have been a mod for how long now?

6:48 AM
@MadMike feb '13

I wonder what my candidate score would be. Is there a easy way to calculate it?

check the election room

hi

hi

why voting reversal?

7:02 AM
Read pinned star to the right -->

@jokerdino shakes hand I got a -330 :)

lol haha

hi @Rinzwind

@jokerdino cl-netbox lost 22k :X

hmm, I should stop.

hammer time?

Hello Everyone. :)

howdy!

FUN FACT: I always thought Oli was a higher ranking moderator than the others mods. Are all mods equal?
I hate typos.

all mods are equal

7:14 AM
@HenryWHHack yes, AU mods all equal

What was the first post on askubuntu?

Q: The morning after

Jacob VlijmAs we all know, there has been a great amount of malicious voting. As we all know, there has been a correction. Right. What I really need to get of my chest: If you think you should make corrections (in general, which I think you should) you should never have waited this long. It has been cl...

@JacobVlijm come here my man

@HenryWHHack "How to get the “Your battery is broken” message to go away?"

@HenryWHHack all mods are equal

7:18 AM
Hi @jokerdino

AND OUT THE WOODWORK THEY COME >:-D

happy to have you back.

he's addicted :=D

@jokerdino Yes I am addicted...

and I told him I'd chase him down and force him to answer questions

7:19 AM
hi

holland aint that big >:)

Unfortunately, I cant give you the details but we have been on this for a couple months now.

damn

@jokerdino the cross voting thing?

yeah, the targeted voting.

7:20 AM
@jokerdino I believe you

and here I thought I could blame Jacob for posting it on meta :*****

there goes that plan >:-D

It simply had to be done.

@Rinzwind You still can :)

7:20 AM
I cant say anymore.

YES!
starred >:-D

@JacobVlijm were you the man on the grassy knoll?

@jokerdino hmm even this: I would remove your posting from chat

@jokerdino go on, go on
@JourneymanGeek I am afraid so...
@jokerdino kidding

It was the right thing to do.
@Rinzwind done

7:23 AM
simple voting rings are the hardest thing to be certain of. This looks huge.

over a 100000
I still don't get the un- accepts. I really trust some of them completely

I do believe it was too harsh what they did.
even if there was a voting abuse a topic that has 300+ upvotes should not have the vote deleted.
I myself would assume if 300+ others agree something is good that even -that- vote should stay :P

no, it's not like that.

ah well. let's leave it :=)
I am still above fossy >:D

@Rinzwind there is a snowballing effect that you are ignoring.

7:29 AM
no I just like snowballs :=D

A post quickly gets 3 votes from friends and that will artificially increase its score and will lead to more votes incoming from non suspecting members.

Holy crap, I go away for a long weekend and all hell breaks loose!

:)

Voting rings and mod elections and everything!

terdon! naa it was a mild snowstorm

7:33 AM
I seem to have lucked out, I only lost ~70 points

and the mod election at the moment is a farce >:-D

I guess the "unupvotes" I see are part of the vote reversal thing.
@Rinzwind Don't tell that to videonauth!

@terdon ah, you were not granted membership to the ring.

Damn!
Who's stepping down, by the way?

@terdon him and Tim look like the only viable options :P

7:35 AM
It's just the first day.

@terdon nobody... 2 extra's

Ah, right

@jokerdino sure ... but I aint applying >:-D

stepping aside

@jokerdino But still, the result is a punishment. Looking at the score per year I am lower then last year now, while I am much more active on the site. As mentioned, I don't trust the algorithms without having seen them.

7:35 AM
I like sitting on the side making comments >:)

@terdon lost 6000

@JacobVlijm yeah well it is not 22k or 17k ;-)

Yeah, but...

@JacobVlijm I know. You might have mentioned it on meta once or twice :P

@JacobVlijm think of it as rep you shouldn't have earned because they were not rewarding the post but the user.

7:37 AM
That has to hurt though. I understand your frustration.

@JacobVlijm if people knew the algorithms, they would try to work out how to circumvent it

@terdon I saw my rep going down as the script was running. that was interesting :D went from 0 to -40 to -100 to -330

@JourneymanGeek not saying anyone should tell me

this thing that happened was to fix things that should have been but failed to.

@Rinzwind Oh man. I can imagine: "Aaaaaa! How do I turn this off?"

7:39 AM
@terdon no I was like: WHY DO I NOT HAVE MANY FRIENDS :((

@JacobVlijm also, this is the first time its happened to this scale, there's probably going to be some fallout, and trying to work out how this could have been communicated better

they probably are going to run this on other sites ;)

oh crap _O-

And poor cl-netbox. He lost 22229

hmm

7:40 AM
now that would be interesting to see

Oh wow, if they run this on SO, it will be "interesting".

@terdon check A.B. and Fabby ;)

@terdon It will
I'm curious whether this has to do with chat.
but, yeah, local mods, shuttup about that ;p

@terdon imagine a 100 people voting ring ... that could destroy SU :X

@jokerdino yeah, especially the question "if I perhaps created an additional account to vote for the other me" was good for some adrenaline.

7:41 AM
@Rinzwind They're next but they lost less than netbox

sorry
I did not post that :+
I do like I get a 2nd attempts on breaking 125k >:-)
I missed the 1st time >:-D

darn ;p

:D

@Rinzwind I might suffer. There's already a joke about me having a cult of personality on root access ;p
(Of course, I tend to share other people's posts more than my own)

ehm. sorry I did not get that comment :P
what joke? D:

7:49 AM
@Rinzwind ^

oh that one :D :D

and most of our current high rep users are a bit inactive I suspect
(and a lot of my recent rep is off the HNQ lottery)
I've never actually seen our number 3 user, the two guys above me are fairly busy, since they were chat regulars.
so, #2 (grawity who's cool) and #1 (harry) are the only active high rep users above me
wil answers some. Haven't seen slhck in a while

feeling a bit underrated now after I had lost 55 rep only... obviously almost nobody did me a favour :(

I lost...
0

lol

7:57 AM
lol

you 2 have less friends than me! yay me!

poor Journeyman

then I realised I have under 2K here ;p

only 2k :X

and then, meh. I'm on SU more anyway, and I'd like to hit 10K before next year ;p

7:57 AM
Yeah, it looks like the cool kids all los a few thousand and all I lost was 70 :(
Quick, someone downvote me!

wait you can have that, ah no it will get reversed anyways ;)

well... what I find interesting ...

o/ terdon

@Videonauth you should \o everyone if you aim to be a mod >:=D

o/

7:59 AM
put the \ far up you know what to please everyone >:-DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

@Rinzwind right :)

is that going to far? :X

\o/ all

lol

\o/ back to you :)

8:00 AM
@Videonauth look at my biceps \\O//

let me hear your war cry ?
nope you dont scare me try again
xD

@Videonauth Haha

well even if wrongly quoted, from which movie was it ?

8:06 AM
@terdon " Fruit Ninja before it was cool...:
:D

:)

aww the video was cut at that scene
he says show me your warface ...
youtube.com/watch?v=D0T4Yw-TabE <-- well here is the cut out scene

@SeverusTux Not in my opinion, no. I voted to close.

8:48 AM
How to block an email adres from linux server

ban its rDNS
im running at the moment with spamdyke and it performs quite well in that task

I have multiple servers, need a simple and fast howto
I have spammassasin on all servers, but don't know how to add email adress to a blacklist

spamassasing only marks the mails as spam if he finds patterns, sec searching the link

@blade19899 It's "blacklist_from billg@microsoft.com" in your spamassassin conf
without the quotes
It might be /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf or something like that

9:06 AM
@StefanoPalazzo Thank you! also found some docs!!

@blade19899 are you going to run for moderator?

@StefanoPalazzo Thanks! It is a company that got hacked and is now sending spam: virustotal.com/en/ip-address/217.6.164.162/information
@StefanoPalazzo I don't have that much time

9:22 AM
Fair enough

hey @Stefano

Have to log in 40 hours minimum a week at work, and usually I'm home around 19:00.
@StefanoPalazzo Still want to though!!!! D:

@jokerdino Yo :)

@StefanoPalazzo what is the workload like on AU?

hmm

9:26 AM
Good morning everybody ! :) Hi @jokerdino ! Hi@terdon ! :) You may think I am frustrated now ... I am not - not because of the points ! Having lost the points is not nice but part of how the system works. I upvoted good, helpful and useful answers. Serial upvoting ? When members write many good answers, they get many upvotes and there are some members who write much more good answers than others, so they get more upvotes ... so supporting their effort is nothing bad for me ...
and I think I also helped many users ...
but ... please tell me : Shall I stop writing correct answers because I receive upvotes - does it make sense at all ? Shall I stop voting for good answers from members like @A.B. @Fabby @JacobVlijm @Serg and others ? Maybe we have to overthink the whole voting system ?

@terdon Different for different people. Some of these guys do a lot (80% of which they can do as high-rep users, without having to be a moderator).

@StefanoPalazzo How many flags per day on average?

good question

@terdon mid double digits

Wow. I can see why you need help.

9:31 AM
and it still remains there every day.
@cl-netbox hiya

@jokerdino Hi my friend ! :)
@jokerdino So what do you say ? Shall I continue to contributing to the site ? I joined AU mainly to help unexperienced users to solve their problems. Is it my fault when I receive upvotes from members who appreciate my effort ?

Of course, your answers and contributions are most welcome in the site.

@cl-netbox it's not a matter of "fault". It's just that upvoting posts because of their author and not because of their content is against the rules. I don't know the details here, but I think that's what happened. So many such votes were invalidated. That doesn't mean what you posted was not good, only that (I guess) some people were giving you too many votes because they liked you.

Customer tried to mail me a screenshot of his credentials, Gmail didn't allowed him, saying there are username and password in this screenshot. Couldn't send me the email xD

@blade19899 that's fantastic
the robots are learning

9:42 AM
@terdon yes ... I know ... some people like me ... some maybe not ... but my answers in most of the cases are correct, well researched, tested, working and useful ... so when I receive upvotes for them, I think it should be okay - right ? :)

@jokerdino that explains things.

@jokerdino hmmm ... but why does @JacobVlijm talk about malicious voting then ?
Hi @muru ! :)

@cl-netbox apparently the system asked him and @ParanoidPanda whether they were involved in that
(in addition to reversing the votes)

@muru we are trying to get new hands with the view that these people stop flagging more and getting them to handle some on their own. Win-win in my books.
@cl-netbox it's a bit of a poor terminology.
malicious in the meaning that it was to beat the system.
I really dont want to be talking this in public.

@jokerdino nobody does

9:49 AM
hi can any one tell me how to excute command using wp-cli

wp == Wordpress?

yes
i want to set a cron from that wp-cli

I have a wordpress installation didn't know wp-cli existed

ok..

@muru Involved in what ? I stand to my upvotes for @ParanoidPanda and others ... upvotes is the AU way to say "thanks" for writing helpful posts ... and they are kind of "motivation" - right ?
@jokerdino this is what I mean ... who says that I (and other users) want to beat the system ? Even though I am here for some time now - I sometimes don't even know how the system works ...

9:56 AM
@parth From wp-cli.org "WP-CLI is a set of command-line tools for managing WordPress installations. You can update plugins, set up multisite installs and much more, without using a web browser."
@parth I'm not sure if this is made to run interactive editors

@MadMike i want to set cron job from that

@Oli le resident Python guru, care to take this one on: askubuntu.com/questions/783874/…?

@MadMike i want to exccute one facebook url every hour "* 1 * * * wget domaincom/wp-content/plugins/mng_facebook_feed/…;

I wouldn't know how to do it... I have ssh access to all of my websites.

@cl-netbox please read things that were sent to you.

10:20 AM
@jokerdino I checked my mails - who is Shog9 ?

He is the community manager for SE.

@jokerdino Thanks ... :) maybe I reply to him later ...

10:42 AM
Now that I check it, I think this has affected badges - the gold tag badge had more people: askubuntu.com/help/badges/182/command-line

Say, I notice the pinned link to the election chatroom uses HTTPS
Does chat.se work well over HTTPS?

@muru Yes of course. I wonder why it doesn't automatically redirect

What is this ? why am I getting this everywhere 👇 👇 👇 👇 👇 👇
Its on the top of every page on AU 👆 👆 👆 👆 👆 👆

@SeverusTux did you mistake the Wayback Machine site for the actual site?
Oli had posted a link to the Wayback Machine a few messages ago.

10:52 AM
Ah... may be, now its gone

11:17 AM
Cleanup badge has no much explanation, what is it ? how does one obtain it ? the only explanation given is : "first rollback"

You need 2k to know what it is.

Ah.. ;D I could have seen it yesterday :(

lol

But I see some users with 300 rep are awarded with that badge

they rollback on their own post.
It simply means reverting a revision on a post.

@James what about this one, practical its an answer but could as well be a comment and the tone of it is definifively not nice askubuntu.com/a/783918/522934

Q: Why have two of my questions and their answers had a series of unupvotes?

DevRobotYesterday all my answers to two questions I posted had many votes "unupvoted", including one question. My reputation history and the two questions: ASCII screensaver for the command-line or a TUI? ASCII animations that are viewed in the command-line? What I don't understand is why there are so...

hahaha,... here is what happened just now : I wrote an answer, OP said "thanks Severus" then he did not accept it, Instead he wrote same answer with a few extra lines to his own question.

@Videonauth similar answer here: askubuntu.com/a/783779/75166 seems "The Emperor..."tries to be a nuisance.

well i wasnt talking about the emeror he is already known to me iwas more disappointed in the tone the other answer was made of
well i put a comment on that and moved on
i must admit normally the emperor should get an upvote for afford lol but since its so much superfluous information he gets none
xD

;)

12:37 PM
@SeverusTux Most likely because they're used to/expect a 'forum' (like ubuntuforums.org) where you simply say "[SOLVED]" in the title. They don't know of anything like an accept button. Maybe we should show new users how to upvote and accept answers before they post their question. And when they answer their own question.

@BharadwajRaju may be yes, but I visited the OP's profile, he has accepted one or two questions. And he has 100+ rep on stakoverflow. So he knows what to do

mhmm severus tux that seems to become a problem lately

@SeverusTux 100+ is not much. A couple of good question could land you that

Well thats true. But as I said, OP has accepted answers before on AU. ... hm.. its okay with me. He got the answer, and the people who visits this Q with same problem will also get the answer. So acceptance is not a problem.

@SeverusTux do they know they can suggest edits?
That's what I tell people who post lightly modified answers to do.

12:48 PM
@muru That may pass notice. The 'edit', 'share' etc. buttons are very light gray, can be easily missed.

Q: Setting primary screen in middle of three-monitor-setting

user1252280While googling to solve my problem I came across the stack post here. However, my setting is a little different: ----- | D | | V | -------- ---------- | I | |HDMI-1| |Notebook| | - | -------- ---------- | 1 | ----- The most left monitor is portrait, where the remaining screens ...

well.. I don't know if he know that.

@StefanoPalazzo Sigh.. All links become HTTPS too, including those to the site. :/

1:05 PM
@muru didn't mean to offend you on that question tho

Offend? Who? What? Where? O.o

annot create regular file ‘/var/student’: Permission denied
you sounded upset
just wanted to make sure you arn't

@Videonauth I did? Nah. I'm just terse around homework questions.

that are typical teacher exam questions
no given state etc. and then how to do this ...
this guy has no student directory
otherwise the error would say cannot write to directory: permission denied

That's the thing. It's not like he has to do this on his system .
If it were actually a test on a computer, I would think that computer would have this directory

1:09 PM
guess so too

I think this just a normal pen+paper test

well he could write an answer needing him to boot into root shell and make the directory, and then copy the file
no use of sudo hehehe
but thats just theoretical

Anyway, I think I VTC'd as unclear.
Without more context...

I'd support that

1:34 PM
well, whatever happens I'm now on the site for more than 15 hours, I need a rest to let my brain cool down.

@Videonauth it's a wrong answer.
So the proper response is to down vote.

to whom tyou refer to? to the emperor ot the one i commented on ?

Q: Editing a post when there is already an edit waiting for review

Android DevI was just attempting to edit a post where there was already an edit waiting to be reviewed. When I clicked on the edit button, it asked me to review the edit. Is it not possible to edit a post when there is already an edit waiting for review?

@muru What's wrong with that?

Something must be, or they'd have been using HTTPS on the sites by now

you can use https by default on chat and site.

Well if I go to askubuntu.com it don't automatically get redirected to the https site. Unfortunately
But you have to turn all the links to https if you are on the https site. Otherwise you've got a serious case of mixed content :)
like that

@StefanoPalazzo Yep

2:08 PM
How sad :)
I use https everywhere on the chromebook (because I usually take it outside and onto public wifi). You can set it to ether only accept https connections or to prefer them if available.
