OR extract all the files off the iso and copy it into the usb drive?
@Videonauth you could've uninstalled KB 3035583 to get rid of the pop-up... but I think its too late now...

I prefer doing it without any 3rd party tools. So.. answers like "change bs=XX in your dd" or "from 16.04 onwards its ..."
are appreciated

@Edity I'll never return to the dark side

:p
happy reading: support.microsoft.com/en-nz/kb/3035583 @Videonauth
Will someone sharpen me yet? -----)
it's video vs edity then videonauth removing windows, Edity removing Ubuntu

@SeverusTux well I'm using all internal tools in my approach and this way i have meanwhile 1 EDC USB with a complete ubuntu install on it

which I laughed in evilness to remove Grub then Ubuntu bit the dust
sharpens himself ----|__| _ _ _ _ _
there's a blog called linuxhaters and heres a picture of them
@SeverusTux Got it yet?

Q: Is it possible to format the root boot disk with Ubuntu still running?

Duke DougalI want to boot Ubuntu, and format the root / boot disk whilst Ubuntu is still running. Is this possible?

10:01 AM
how full is that flag cue ? and whos egible to run down on that ?

me

ah so only elected mods ?

we have a bit of a backlog. I try to keep it low but boo.
@Videonauth I think so.

wee sucks, im so close to my next badge and have more than enough flags open hehehe
this is why I'm asking

10:15 AM
@muru Thanks, didn't notice that that was already an answer.

hey you @Fiksdal

hey you @jokerdino ! How's it going?

It's been great.
I peeked at your profile some time ago and it said Southern India.
that's so vague.

Sure, I live in Tamil Nadu

much better
where in there?

10:18 AM
Yeah, the CIA are on a manhunt for me so I can't disclose my precise location... jk
Thiruvannamalai

haha
You got the spelling spot on. I wonder how long you been here.
how do you cope with the heat in these parts?

Well, actually Romanization is not an exact science, so the correct spelling would be திருவண்ணாமலை
Some people spell it Tiruvannamalai

did you copy that from somewhere else?

I did, as I would have probably made a mistake if I tried using the Ibus Tamil keyboard myself
I cope with the heat by using an air cooler, lol.. It's got this water tank inside that helps give me cool air.. I sit in front of it a lot, lol
Do you have any relationship to South India?

lol
I live in Chennai..

10:21 AM
Cool.. I was there a few months ago
Tamizh terima?

aama
nalla theriyum
yes, I know it very well.

Onga tayy mozhi, a?

yes :)
wow man, you are very impressive.

Alright
I'm guessing it's probably against the rules of the main chatroom to speak non-english, right? haha

I think so. Never had such a problem before though.

10:23 AM
hehe

and never had someone talk Tamil to me outside of rl contacts.
and definitely not an European.

Yeah, so I've lived in India for four and a half years now.

you got a family here?

There are a few westerners here who know Tamil... maybe me and five others

pretty curious to know what you are doing here for so long. Feels like some sort of NGO.

10:24 AM
No, my family are all in Norway, and I'm un-married

@Fiksdal you know those other 5?

I'm volunteering in an ashram here
5 was just an estimate... I know some of them, but not very well.

that makes sense. thi-malai is a pilgrimage spot.

I've chatted with them a few times on the road

I never been there but I might just visit some time soon.

10:26 AM
One time I was having a whole conversation in Tamil with a British guy on the road. Some of the locals were looking at us with pure shock as if the moon had just fallen out of the sky

for what do we have those version badges if people going around and remove them everywhere ?

yeah, I would be shell shocked. WAATTTT

Like why the hell are these two white guys talking to each other in Tamil

@Videonauth slap them hard and put the tag back if it is relevant

Yeah, you should visit Tiru... If you're a Hindu you should check out the big temple and Ramana Ashram

10:27 AM
@Fiksdal never had that thing happen to me and I will have a similar reaction.

well i dont know where i only see that my score has dropped from 97 two days ago to actually 84

@Fiksdal I am born Hindu but not much of an interest in visiting temples.
are you a Hindu or a convert?
this is all bizarrely new to me.

haha

I do think you are talking about ramana maharishi ashram

what, westerners living in India? There are actually hundreds or even thousands of westerners here, depening on time of year. Or are you talking about the language thing?
In this town alone i mean

10:29 AM
I guess loads of them are religious kind.
@Fiksdal a westerner asking me to visit a Hindu temple in my state.

Yeah, I'm talking about Ramana Maharshi. It's actually really interesting even if you're not a devout Hindu... Ramana didn't really care much about the traditional things, his teachings were more metaphysical

that never happened to me

hahaha
I don't consider myself a convert myself... I think there is wisdom in a lot of traditions including Hindusim (Advaita Vedanta), Sufism, Gnosticism, Zen, etc. But I think Ramana Maharshi was one of the greatest teachers in modern times.

Hello everybody! Can someone help me? I tried to use rsync to copy my files on an external hard-drive. I did not think about doing any logging settings. When rsync finished it said:

rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors) (code 23) at main.c(1183) [sender=3.1.1]

10:32 AM
@jokerdino check it out

can i now print everything in my terminal to a file, or is the rsync default log file somewhere?

@Fiksdal I never paid much attention to his teachings but you are doing your work really well here.

:)

@Fiksdal hop in for a chat in the future when you got some free time. You seem like an interesting person.

What do you do for a living in Chennai? You have spouse and kids there?

10:33 AM
@Videonauth I dont know where I would be starting.
@Fiksdal I just got done with my studies. Not married

OK, cool

what do YOU do for a living?

yeah me as well not two days ago it was 47 answers and 97 score and now im back at 42 answers and 84 score -.-

@Videonauth Who's graph is that? They got rep pretty fast

@Fiksdal mine 71 days for 6210 rep

10:35 AM
@jokerdino I inherited a house from my grandfather in Norway, so I have income from that

ah, that's nice to hear.

@Videonauth How did you get rep so fast? Answer a lot of questions?

@Fiksdal yep over 200 answers meanwhile
202

@snail-on-a-quest are you still here?

Are you taking a shot at the illuminator badge?

10:37 AM
yep 17 so far :)
hard to score them

What do you mean 17?

@snail-on-a-quest I see similar errors in questions asked before on the site but no answers so far.

Eric HermanssonI'm trying to set up two Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS servers on my homenetwork. I'm looking to have this configuration but I can't seem to get it working. Server 1 - hosting www.domain1.com. Server 2 - hosting www.domain2.com. Do you guys have a clue? Regards, Eric

@snail-on-a-quest ok good luck with your thing

Q: Could we have member of the month voting?

NonStandardModelIt is just an idea. There could be once a month voting for "best" member of the month. It would be just a way to say thanks for all the help. Every member could for example give 3 votes for others (not possible to self vote).

@Fiksdal my mum has been to the ashram it seems.
my dad and mom used to visit the town for girivalam back then.

So within 12 hours you have edited and answered 17 questions and gotten a score greater than 1?
@jokerdino Cool! :) Millions of people come here for Girivallam on Deepam :)
@Videonauth

10:53 AM
yep

Haha.. Wow.. It much be really, really hard to earn that badge
I think one would have to be up all day making answers.. And how can we edit all 500? Most questions don't really have that many errors to edit.

he doesnt sleep

Yeah because you never know, you might get upvotes from others but the answer may not be accepted within that time, many people drop their questions and vanish for 1-2 days
yep i sleep rarely, maybe 12-16 hours per week

he will be up when I go to bed and still be here when I wake up.

and might be here when you go to bed again and get up again ;)
well as long you dont loose your humour all is fine

11:06 AM
LOL. What, the answer has to be accepted to count? I thought the score was enough
@Videonauth

Nope it has to be acceppted
you have to edit, being the first to answer, getting upvote and accept
i made that 17 times in past 71 days
and tried many more times

WHAT???
That's insane.

eh, no need for an accept.

You'd literally have to be on the computer for 12 hours straight and provide awesome answers all day.
@jokerdino Yeah, that's what I thought too

still hard to get

11:09 AM
I am on 43. Wow
Refiner is at 50.

Just to make clear i see no competition on this site, im doing that because helping people gives me something and i have nothing else to do mostly

it also doesnt require you to be first to answer.

sure i try to get badges

@jokerdino Does that mean in a single day you edited and answered 43 questons with your answers getting a score of 1 or more?

> Edit and answer 50 questions (both actions within 12 hours, answer score > 0)
@Fiksdal very likely different days
I edited questions that I answered which also happened to get some upvotes.

11:11 AM
oh...
Isn't this the illuminator badge?

50 is refiner. 500 is illuminator

yep hard to get one
my next badge most probably will be marshal
i think if im lucky ill get it today

dont count on it
maybe a week at best

woot ?
for 9 helpful flags a week ???
youre kidding me
im shooting spam flags the whole morning already ;)

So illuminator and refiner have the same requirements, except for 50 vs 500?

11:17 AM
@Fiksdal yes

hides all @Videonauth flags.

:)
and after that om not sure which gold badge will come firt electorate or fanatic
they are both on a good way

user136984
Finally hit the 500 mark for the amount of questions I've asked! :D

user136984
There should be a badge for that! :P

11:45 AM
The most difficult question I have ever seen on AU askubuntu.com/questions/781300 . Who is ready to award a bounty ? ;P :-P

well i had a similar easy question answered yesterday wich made it in the hot posts lists

LOL

got 18 upvotes on that one yesterday

Making it to the "hot" list is almost guaranteed to get you a high score.. Especially since voters from other sites with 101 rep can't downvote

yep but i never expected that this easy thing will turn out that way
and it clearly wasn't hard to answer

11:56 AM
matter
Hehe.. yeah it doesn't matte
It's just a matter of probability.. The question was viewed by almost 1000 people... Only 1.8% of them voted on your answer (many of them probably weren't even members of AU).

Q: PBS queue -- job-exclusive node state

user3653831I want to submit multiple jobs to the PBS queue. I have a cluster with 4 nodes, each with 12 dual core CPUs. After I submit the job, I notice that each node takes two jobs and there are two jobs left waiting in the queue. When I type pbsnodes -a, I notice that the nodes have this "job-exclusive" ...

yeah i guess so

@Fiksdal Ah... I know that ;-P ;)

haha...
You are a wizard, right?

@Fiksdal Did you try ??

12:04 PM
who ?

@Videonauth we were talking about this

And the fact that Severus is actually part of the Hogwarts staff

@Fiksdal were you running multiple copying to same Destination ?

12:22 PM
Nope, just a single copy process

Which DE do you use ?? Works well on Unity

1 hour later…
1:31 PM
Hi guys!
How do I update my BIOS in ubuntu?

@Masi did you reboot ?

@AbhishekBhatia askubuntu.com/a/338777/3940 you need DOS if your BIOS does not support upgrade from USB drive.

user136984
@Takkat: What about the firmware updates utility in 16.04?

@ParanoidPanda never tried that out but may work... I choose my systems to be able to upgrade BIOS from BIOS.
or else: if a mainboard or laptop needs Windows to have it's BIOS upgraded it is not built for me.

1:58 PM
@Takkat I am running a dual boot with windows, should I update from there?(Referring: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1588428)

user136984
@AbhishekBhatia: What Ubuntu version are you running?

@AbhishekBhatia this should work if the vendor had provided a Windows tool... there may be issues with UEFI, ubuntu wiki recommends to backup the UEFI partition: help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate

@ParanoidPanda I am using 16.04

(but actually I have no idea what we can do with such a backup... I bet just restoring the EFI partition may not be such a good idea)

user136984
@AbhishekBhatia: What's the output of fwupdate -s?

user136984
2:14 PM
@muru: Thanks for the edit by the way! :)

@ParanoidPanda Firmware updates are supported on this machine.

user136984
@AbhishekBhatia: What does fwupdate -l return?

user136984
2:57 PM
Have you all died or something?

Ah.. I thought I am the only one feeling that way :)
How about this feature : which shows: " ParanoidPanda is typing ..." , "Fabby is typing ..." in chat room'

@SeverusTux Nathan wrote something to do that
but most people didn't use it because of privacy concerns I guess.

Hey folks, there's definitely not a cool thing behind this link... askubuntu.com/election/5
4
bbl

3:24 PM
@SeverusTux It was on XFCE, I wrote the details as a comment at Mark Kirby's answer.

user136984
Am I required to restart my machine in order to restart X?

So it will cost me $491 to buy the OnePlus 3 with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.
...apparently.

@NathanOsman Damn, that phone has a lot of RAM. I'm sure you can play three games at the same time.

@Fiksdal @MarkKirby is correct, it would seem to vary based on desktop environment. best bet is use the file manager that came with your desktop
What is the criteria for voting ?? is there any minimum reputation required for the Voters ?? Should they be members for atleast one year ??
@Seth 👆 👆 👆 👆 👆 👆 👆 👆 could you please tell me about it ?? Or anyone knowing about mod elections

3:48 PM
@SeverusTux It's all on that page :)
Reputation for nominating: 300. For voting: 150.

Ah.. thanks . which page ? this one askubuntu.com/election/5 ??

@SeverusTux Does it mean the file manager that belongs to the flavor installed or the one that belongs to the DE one is currently signed in to?

@Fiksdal I meant using the Default DE with default File-manager is always better. Eg : If you want to yous xfce , I would say its best to use Xubuntu instead of installing Xfce on Ubuntu unity

@SeverusTux yup, that one!

Ah.. now I got it..

3:54 PM
Hello everybody ! :)

Hi 😜 😜

@SeverusTux ok, Thanks. Is there an upcoming mod election? When is it?

@Fiksdal yes, nomination period begins in 3 days & election begins in 10 days . more details : askubuntu.com/election/5

@NathanOsman I'm gonna buy the Asus Zenfone 2 Deluxe because it has an x86 "processor. I can use chroot to install a Linux distro and the phone will double as a desktop computer.

@ParanoidPanda still alive ... but what about your hamster ... is he still alive after what you've done to him yesterday ? :D

4:01 PM
Cool, I'm looking forward to voting

Hi @Fiksdal @SeverusTux ! :)

What happens if someone is nominated but doesn't want to be a mod? What is the minimum rep for nominees?
Hi @cl-netbox :)

@Fiksdal Minimum reputation is 300. Self nominations only :)

Oh, ok.

4:04 PM
@Seth : What is it ? Will all moderators have to be re-elected ? Hi ! :)

@cl-netbox Nope! Moderators are elected for life (until you either retire or are retired from inactivity). We're looking for a couple more :)

@cl-netbox 👇 👇 👇 👇

@Seth Good to know ... because I think you and the others are doing a pretty good job here ! :)

thank you!

4:06 PM
Gotta go, guys. Phone out of battery. See you :)

@Fiksdal bye :D

@Fiksdal goodbye ! :)

@Videonauth So the story is steam advertised on their front page, and in the "coming" to steam os sale - saw a post that confirmed that they wernt even working on it.

@Seth Unclear/offtopic -- > askubuntu.com/questions/781409

user136984
4:33 PM
@cl-netbox: He chewed through my best jumper and made a big hole in it! :D

@ParanoidPanda hahaha ... then he must be in good condition ... :D :D :D

user136984
@cl-netbox: Yeah, but my jumper isn't... :P

@ParanoidPanda that is understandable ... :D

Q: The Asker or the Answerer?

David Cole - Grammar PoliceWhen people come to this site, they seek help, and I acknowledge that. Now however, it is time to question how much they need to know before they come asking for help. I was scrolling through earlier when I found this. Now normally yes you get 1-2 decently bad questions, but this is just horrid. ...

Hey everyone, my desktop is getting about 1/3 the bandwidth of my laptop, and I think it might be the wireless card's fault.
I tried looking into the driver, and it appears that it is using a realtek driver despite being a rosewill product, could this be the issue?

oh, mod elections ??

@Videonauth just to handle all your flags :)

lol

5:40 PM
I am still looking to go into a next subject.
Mods elections! :O where?

@jokerdino mhmmm you know what i think right now?

dont know boss. you tell me

Hi @jokerdino ! :) Hi @Videonauth ! :) what about flagging everything by default ... then you only have to care about the little amount of unflag votes ... :D :D :D

make a guess :)

@cl-netbox yeah wait what? NO

5:43 PM
@cl-netbox ah even easier, deleting the whole site starting from scratch :D

@Videonauth you want delete at sight privs?

why not?

try your luck ;)

i mean im on the site here long times of the day, have fun in answering

hmmm
@Videonauth 🤔

Q: What desktop environment was Joli OS based on?

FiksdalI know Joli OS was based on Ubuntu (or some Ubuntu flavour), but what DE was it based on? Or had it built its very own?

@Mateo well I got the font issue fixed, but now I've got more problems -.-
@Anthony eh, it might be not using the most optimal product, but most likely rosewill just bought a realtek chip and rebranded it. Ask a full question on the site tagged though and someone more knowledgeable will look at it.

@jokerdino seems youre sceptic :)

its a food for thought emoji

ah ok its somewhat small here :)

@Seth you mean chillybean555

5:55 PM
minus the bean, yes ;)
and WildMan.
and Jeremy31

goodbye :) see you tomorrow :)
