@Zacharee1 supply and demand

@Mateo you've got a point
and why is my computer unmuted?

- everyone wants the new faster ram

@Videonauth you could go to the UK. They're pretty accepting

- less people are upgrading ddr2 computers

@Mateo Let's see, I have my laptop here running Windows 95. I don't even have DDR RAM in it, but I hear this new LPDDR5 RAM is pretty fast. Could I put that in? It's not that expensive.

12:06 AM
wow jorge is pretty generous with bountys :)

@Zacharee1 -_-

:)
um @Videonauth, why do you have 1.5k more rep than 2 days ago?

huh ?

Your rep is climbing so extremely quickly

Yeah, but you know a lot and write good answers
@Videonauth did you flag that NAA?

yep

@Videonauth I just want to have as much rep as @Jorge has given away.

1500 ?

12:14 AM

@Videonauth I think he means over time ;p
@Videonauth in Alaska you wouldn't get much work though, so that's a problem

@JourneymanGeek Wait, dune?

dunecat knows about the spice.

12:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek +1 For being a mod with humor. :D

They all have humor

@Zacharee1 :O

Yes, some people just push limits a little hard from time to time.

is that a hint?

myself included. I have been obnoxious at least once

12:40 AM
lol

AviD and Oli has no humor there very serious mods.

Oli has loads of humor. It's just a little dark sometimes.

he's also not quite as patient, which can be a good thing
@RobotHumans ah, Russia

someone has to be the one to take hard-line positions. it just turns out most of the time it's Oli.

yurp

12:46 AM
I am Oli pretending to be a normal user.

uh huh

really.
Was anyone fooled?

no
Everyone flag this NAA: askubuntu.com/questions/780600/…

It's not NAA. It's just supremely low quality.
While it may theoretically answer the question (it's how the vmware .run bash script does it for example), link only answers are discouraged. — RobotHumans 17 secs ago

@RobotHumans link-only answers are NAA
And it also doesn't really answer the question, at least how I understand it

12:54 AM
I'm trying to give the original answer-er time to edit and some insight in to why they should.

The person wants to run a bash script that'll include what it needs to run
Like a snap
But a script instead of an entire package
Actually, I think they want to make a CLI program
so maybe they want to make a DEB

@Zacharee1 i had this flagged naa already as it was answered, @Seth expained me a link only answer is naa and not vlq

kk either way.
Saving this for the next time someone bigs up Apple

1:09 AM
XD
But why no direct link?
@Videonauth I was just bringing it up again with more people here

where ? i dont see something bad there !?

it's a comment not an answer. it doesn't attempt to answer the question. it only eliminates one possible problem.

@Videonauth ^
@RobotHumans I'm still laughing at that pic
it's too true

@Zacharee1 Yup. I'm totally ready to unleash it on someone.

heh

1:14 AM
that would not be me im a true believer in the pc with linux church

Well if @Daniel ever rejoins

grant, i don't think we need 37 button gaming mice to run a desktop, but there is a balance between "the button" and "enough buttons"

lol
Well I like my 6-button mouse, with an 7th DPI changer button
I can program the four side buttons

About 6 would be nice sometimes. At least three and a scrollwheel. I'ld like to have a few programmable buttons most of the time.

To all women who think they are special, just because 5 men showing interest in them. Please think on soccer there are 22 men chasing a ball and the only thing they want is, score a goal.

@Videonauth the last two people i got lucky with it was because i didn't chase... at all. odd how that works.

well im single now since 1995

eh
So, this scares me a little. Hopefully I don't ever have to say Apple beat out Google on a privacy stand:

not that i like it tho, its just im not chasing anything at all when it comes it comes and if not well then so be it

@Videonauth where'd that come from? :p

1:22 AM
just saw it as a meme in german on my facebook
only translated it, dont think it was a perfect translation

@Videonauth ah

well you could think that someone posting a question about a problem and gets a reaction within 3 minutes would react on it, or ?

@RobotHumans not really my kind of music :) but thanks

Q: terminal won't lauch (ubuntu 16.04)

leobapA weird thing happened today: I clicked in terminal icon and it didn't launched, just blinked and disappeared. If I press ctrl+alt+t it won't launch. I tried to launch a light terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+f1. The login screen, appeared to put my login and password, the system accepted the login...

i think i know the problem, but want to confirm it first

How're they going to add that if they can't run commands?

you can access the logs via GUI as well

Ctl-alt-F1 to get to a tty instead of ctl-alt-t and xclip or redirection to a file

i had it once already that terminal didnt want to open because of bad locales settings
yep or dmesg | pastebinit

1:30 AM
@RobotHumans check the question again

then LIVE cd/stick

@Zacharee1 eh. i stopped reading at ctl t. ^^

@RobotHumans I honestly don't see the problem. It's just location history, which is still private data until you're suspected of commiting a crime

theres always a ways to access the logs

lol

1:31 AM
@Zacharee1 camel nose. it's all a camel nose

say what now

@Zacharee1 heh if google tries to put me somewhere they get the exact location of one transmission tower about 40 KM away

gps is switched off by default

@Videonauth yeah, you can also just turn it off

1:33 AM
and funny thing is they not even can triangulate me because there is only that one tower

@RobotHumans slippery slope fallacy
@Videonauth lol. what about the E911 location though?
How's that work?
if it even exists in DE?

there are fallacys on both sides of every argument.

this is noexistent in germany ;)

@RobotHumans have I presented one? (sincere)
@Videonauth time to move to DE
I have a phone that supports every cellular band, so I'm set

if you had to support the slippery slope fallacy, there would be a fallacy in your argument.

1:35 AM
what they include here in stock roms is a tool where you can get your gps then switch on and send an sms to police or someone you trust in case of emergency containing your location

@RobotHumans but you're supporting the slippery slope
@Videonauth so more conscious

@Zacharee1 yes. i'm saying if you had to support that it is a fallacy, i could find a fallacy in the argument.

I'm honestly not sure why they have the E911. Apparently, cell phone location is really inaccurate anyway, because they can only use the towers (which I guess is what E911 is)
@RobotHumans oh
Well let me try :p

@Zacharee1 yep german law acts contain a big junk of privacy protection, and the law enforcement agencys here have to have a judge sign a warant first before they even can see who you have talked with and this only for about 8 weeks past nothing more is alowed to be cached

@Zacharee1 XD plz don't

1:38 AM
fine
@Videonauth cool

laws in Germany are fairly liberate, mostly

@Videonauth Ha! I got 10 whole rep in the past hour. So there! :p

its not so much about general paranoia and shootin ǵ first asking questions second

@Videonauth liberal?
@Videonauth hello USA

Imagine in 2015 the whole german police fired 58 shots at all in the whole year, and about 90% of them where warning shots

1:42 AM
290 if multiplied for the approx population of the US
We has 390 killings by law officers in 2015
and we have 55 so far :/

becoming a police officer here is aa process which takes you to school again for about 5 years (law school and all whats needed on knowledge), then they put in active duty with a senior officer for about 5 years again.

sounds quite rigorous

but necessary, this way we know we have to expect a high quality standard, and not power hungry idiots with guns
this affects every aspect when you meet an officer here, they know their limits and treat you respectfully as long you do the same

tengo celoso

English please

1:46 AM
I'm jealous
Spanish grammar is similar enough to English that Google Translate generally works pretty well
It literally means "I have jealousy," but that's how Spanish (and German, right?) works

no htere it differs sligtly i think but not sure
btw did you try to translate that setence i posted yesterday ?

no

the first part is easy but then it becomes impossible because of the difference in words, you wouldnt get the proper meaning across

I didn't know that's what you meant :p
ah

That's how it works for French. connaitre is a fun one to try to explain to people that never tried to understand a foreign language.
although German is famous for its frankensuperwords

1:50 AM
That's why I love German
@RobotHumans Google says it means to know

Yes, but the difference between je sais and je connais

Oh, is this like saber vs conocer?

well german allows to concanate words yes thats what youre meaning

To know as in knowledge and to know as in acquaintance?
@Videonauth so much fun

@Zacharee1 yes

1:52 AM
You just put a bunch of shorter words together and their definitions combine @Videonauth
@RobotHumans ah

yes like "Schokoladenkirchturnspitze"

Someone help this clueless soul: askubuntu.com/questions/780649/…

three words give a new meaning

I see chocolate
what's it mean?

chocolate church tower tip

1:54 AM
xD
and the actual meaning? xD

well a church out of chocolate, and describing their tower tip

Yeah. google screwed that one up. It split chocolate and steeple, but i had to manually split church and tower/spire

thats a funny but possible word

@Videonauth ohh, I thought it was an actual existing word xD

it is, you might even find it in DUDEN

1:55 AM
Stop playing German god :p
wat

It could come up in an episode of Archer...

uh k

The duden is a comprehensive dictionary for german language in print form
there is the duden press which meanwhile do aswell foreign dictionarys and translation tables

The Duden (German pronunciation: [ˈduːdən]) is a dictionary of the German language, first published by Konrad Duden in 1880. The Duden is updated regularly, with new editions appearing every four or five years. As of August 2013 it is in its 26th edition and in 12 volumes, each covering different aspects such as loanwords, etymology, pronunciation, synonyms, etc. The first of these volumes, Die deutsche Rechtschreibung (English: German Orthography), has long been the prescriptive source for the spelling of German. The Duden has become the bible of the German language, being the definitive set of...

Do not delay. Do not wait for more answers. The worst outcome for both you and the employer is they settle for someone who is a less good fit for the job, and make an offer. Every hour you delay increases that risk. — Patricia Shanahan yesterday
I blame @TheBrownOne that I read that as "Do not delay. Do not wait for more answers. Do not collect $200." :P

o/
Still haven't heard back from the KDE folks.

hmm, now that you mention it, I haven't heard back from the snapcraft people either.
also \o

I'm trying to decide how long to wait before submitting the patch to either Debian or Ubuntu.
I always try upstream first, but if they aren't responsive, it makes no sense to deprive everyone else.

@NathanOsman tbh, I assumed they would not respond for a long time. the site didn't have a look of high responsiveness

I always envisioned KDE being a more active project.
An acknowledgement would be nice.

3:11 AM
my view was based on kdenlive itself only

@Nathan have you considered going to a Debian or Ubuntu user that is active in KDE as well?

I don't know any...
I'm on the Qt mailing list and it is very active.

I think you should always submit to ubuntu. they may say contact upstream but ubu is much more responsive

Right, but they will be more receptive if I've tried upstream first.

ok. but now there's no reason not to file a bug on launchpad

3:13 AM
I'll do that later if I have a chance.
I was also hoping someone familiar with the project would look over the patch.

I wish more projects used Launchpad or GitHub (or even BitBucket) or something easy to submit patches to.

I mean, it works. But that doesn't mean it actually solves the problem.
@Seth you think that's bad... wait until you submit a patch to Qt. You have to use their special issue tool and sign stuff and...

o_O

GitHub really is the best. Launchpad is okay too.
I prefer GitHub though since the workflow is quite a bit smoother.
Launchpad will get better though now that they're moving to Git.

3:43 AM
@Seth NitroShare has Nautilus integration now.

yay!

ah while youre here nathan, will it hurt if i install python-gi for both python versions?

O_0

@Videonauth It should not cause any problems.

ok wasnt sure :) my second day into python

Oh, cool!
Let me know if you have any Python questions.
I'd be more than happy to answer them.

5:24 AM
will do, if im really stuck
thought only i made a game of life application in openGL c++ once now for to getting my feet wet want to recode this in phyton with gtk+

Sounds like fun.

yeah should be the logics should be the same, just with different syntax
and it will give me as well insight how to import libraries and use them etc.
will come in handy if im going to make other applications

Is your heart set on GTK?
If it's not too late, I would actually recommend giving PyQt a try.

not really, im a c++ geek, the opengl game of life i made with SDL2

I think you will find PyQt a bit easier (and more powerful) than GTK.

5:29 AM
mhmm pyqt could be intresting because of the qt creator
will make designing the windows maybe easier

If you want to see an example of what a PyQt application looks like, I wrote this a couple years back.

as defining them from scratch

It's a simple app that monitors the kernel entropy pool.

ok stupid question the lines with those tripple doublequotes, whats their function? comment ?

Yes, they are called docstrings and they serve as comments.
Python will ignore them since the strings aren't assigned to anything.

5:32 AM
ah ok they kept me puzzled because the python documentation not uses them
takes a lot from me to leave out the brackets everywhere and just work with indentation
xD

Unlike normal comments (which start with "#") docstrings are stored with the method and there are ways to look them up.

guess the variables are all global for the script as well ? Or are there scopes ?

Any variable initialized outside a function or class is global.
Variables initialized within a method or function are local.

ah ok so classes and functions have their own scope good to know

However, there are no scopes for if, while, for, etc. statements.
So if you have a function that initializes a variable within a for loop, it will still be accessible outside the for loop, but not outside the function.

5:36 AM
ok, this is so much different from c++ where you even could use {} without a function or anything to create a scope

Correct.

importing sys gives me as well the IO access ? e.g file IO and such ?

Depends what you need. You don't actually need anything to open a file, for example. the "open()" function is a built-in.
Anyway, I gotta head to bed now. Ping me if you have any more questions.

ah ok
yeah will do, like i said if I'm really stuck, I'm normally only asking if i run against a wall
oh man askubuntu.com/q/780693/522934 now this guy changes his question around and i look like an idiot with my answer, he not even replies on it but keeps changing his question

@Videonauth hes trying to do top 10 possible ways to drive your question mad or something, is it top 10 ways to handle your question in the most worst way?
