Can we get some VTC here? askubuntu.com/questions/774909/… Adding a mention of Ubuntu as an attempt at a salvage doesn't help it, plus at best it's a dupe of How Do I Install Something.

9:41 AM
I've been exploring options to share a WiFi internet connection using the same WiFi adapter on my laptop. According to askubuntu.com/questions/318973/… I need a hardware supporting this. But, according to howtogeek.com/213761/… there is already an application which can create a virtual adapter to connect to multiple networks.
But it works only on Windows. Does anyone have any idea on how to recreate this on Linux?
I mean if it's possible on Windows why not Linux?
Also, would it make sense if I posted this as a separate question?
Anyone?
It seems the application itself is open source too. virtualrouter.codeplex.com

9:57 AM
Think I'll post a question

@shyam I believe the facilities for that is built into some wifi adaptors and windows

@JourneymanGeek I had a look at the source, it does not make much sense at this point. I'm not familiar with the code structure there and the README does not help. I'll look into it deeper.
Also, I seriously doubt the facility is built into the adapter. My colleague has been running the application on what is a presumably substantially older and cheaper hardware than what I have running Windows 8. I'm not entirely sure his adapter supports it.
Chances are low.

12:13 PM
@Masi sue now i should be online for a while
o/ all :)

12:39 PM
@Videonauth I am back. We can start.
I am just playing with RB3b here askubuntu.com/q/775150/25388 at the moment

so is it only firefox ?
because I cant reproduce the problems you have here on my stick

Yes, it is the firefox and the Internet browser.
But we can try to tackle Firefox first.

for the firefox like i said removing the mozilla directories in /home/user/ should suffice
one is called .mozilla and the other .config/mozilla
and one should be in .cache
if i remember right

It was not sufficient. Restarting the system gives back the problem.

mhmmmm

12:42 PM
* is not sufficient

did you check the permissions on users home directory ?

How?
What do you think they should be?
They should be ok, but not sure what you want with them.

well they should all be owned by the user so far

yes

or better even we recreate it but give me a second
mv -v /home/<user-name> /home/<user-name-backup>
you might want to sudo that if it gives you a permission denied
same with the following commands

12:48 PM
done

mkdir -v /home/<user-name>

done

chown <user>:<user> /home/<user-name>

done

chmod 755 /home/<user-name>
reboot
this way you still have all data in backup and you createa ground up new user dir

12:53 PM
@Videonauth It works with the first startup. I wonder what caused/causes the problem.

borked up file permissions ownership
now you can check which files are differen with the ones in your backup dir
so you find the exact cause

Any diff tool for that?

for contents yes not sure if there is a diff tool for permissions
remember im a linux user since only 3 months ~
not seen anything yet xD
i would probably open two terminals and then ls -lah side by side
btw did you see that i sorted out the grub issue in my answer ?
you can remove or replace that step 14 in your text
echo 'GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER="true"' >> /etc/default/grub
update-grub

1:09 PM
@Videonauth How can I do the correction now to the existing USB?

youre booted with that stick ?

yes
on it

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
put
GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER="true"
at the end and
sudo update-grub

Good! Thank you!
@Videonauth To compare two trees, here unix.stackexchange.com/a/284451/16920

1:46 PM
@Braiam oh wow

Hello :)

@Braiam Hi ! :) I flagged some of them @jokerdino - please have a look ! Hi ! :) How are you today ? :)

@Braiam no need to close the questions. They have accepted answers which contains workaround for the problem.

asking again ... how are you ? @jokerdino - everything alright ? :)

1:56 PM
yes, I am all right. Thank you.

@jokerdino nice to read this ! :)

@jokerdino why not? They are bugs. Bugs. We close bug questions
and also, there are at least 3 users copying the same answer from one question to the others.

@Videonauth See the end here askubuntu.com/q/768970/25388 Do you understand what could cause the bug in starting Firefox?

or are you suggesting that we change AU scope?

better off to find a question and make it master and dupe rest of them to it.
I suggest we put people and their problems first and then worry about the site later.

2:08 PM
no. Duplicates are for question that are on topic. All of them are off topic
@jokerdino so, you are willing to convert AU in the bug tracker? That is a very unwise desision

@Masi the .cache/ directory it was, it was owned by root which should be owned my user
the programms couldnt write to .cache so they terminated or caused undefined behavior

@Videonauth So what would be the correct solution here?

I am a bit busy cleaning up the site. I will get back to you later.

There's no workaround, just to apply the update that was released. The bug is fixed, the issue should go away when every mirror is synced.

@Videonauth can still switch back to backup. So sudo chown masi:masi $HOME/c.ache, rigth?

2:11 PM
@Masi the one i described befre is the most hassle free one, and then cp back data you may need

.cache
Why not just changing the owner?

more running chown -R masi:masi /home/backup

How would you do now `rsync between /home/masi and /home/masi_backup?

but im not really sure if this would end you up with proper ownership of everything inside the home dir
by hand only copying the data you want to keep and throw away the rest
thats the cleanes solution
each programm will write itsconfigs new on starting them
so the ownerships are perfectly

@jokerdino I am very glad to see this opinion from you - helping users should be the main thing ! :)
@Braiam : I posted this in my answer - please have a look at the bottom -> askubuntu.com/questions/775091/… :)

2:21 PM
Next week I think I'm gonna ask my manager if I can post some of my scripts on GitHub, cause seriously some of them works awesomely!

@jokerdino : you marked this one -> askubuntu.com/questions/775091/… as a duplicate pointing to this one -> askubuntu.com/questions/774953/… which has not the best fitting answer ... wouldn't it be better the other way around ? :)

I am not going to swap it around but I can merge if you want.

@cl-netbox why are telling me this?
@cl-netbox yeah, help them by driving away the most knowledgeable experts, so you have a site full of blind people guiding blind people
BTW, this kind of behavior is why I don't answer questions here anymore]

@Braiam because you said that an update is released -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/29785749#29785749 and I informed the OP in the update of my answer about this. :)

@cl-netbox I don't follow

2:27 PM
what's up @Braiam - haven't seen you in forever.

@hbdgaf nothing much, old same hell here

@Braiam you said an update is available and I just wanted to inform you that this information is included in my answer, where in other answers to this problem only the workaround was provided. :)
@Braiam hahaha ... nice :)

@cl-netbox still don't follow. I know that an update was released.

Eh. Well, maybe it gets better. That load of apt questions that are all bug reports of the bug that has a patch landing very very soon or already was sort of bombing chat from @SeverusTux yesterday. They really should all just be closed as dupes to one answer that is closed as a bug report and links to a chain of about 3 different reports. One is the root bug, and it's fixed in Debian and Ubuntu.

@Braiam yes and because I saw you saying this I only wanted to inform you that I already included the information ... that was all :)
@jokerdino : please delete this comment -> askubuntu.com/questions/775091/… makes no sense anymore ... :)

2:38 PM
done

@Masi as well the .bash history owned by root may be a problem

@jokerdino Thanks :)

@jokerdino before, though, my Google keyboard wouldn't let me access the emoji keyboard in browser. With the new update, I can.

@jokerdino : I have a suggestion - what about merging -> askubuntu.com/questions/774953/… to this one -> askubuntu.com/questions/775049/16-04-apt-update-never-ends ? Would fit better and has the better title ... IMHO ... :)

user139252

3:35 PM

@cl-netbox would you like this to be the master?

@muru should I add this answer to that question? [Duplicate-discussion]

@jokerdino it would be better than what we have now - but I think the master should be this question -> askubuntu.com/questions/775049/16-04-apt-update-never-ends ... on first sight you see the main problem and it has a good accepted answer ... so when new users search this keeps them away from posting a new dupe question. :)

@cl-netbox yes of course

@jokerdino then merge as much as possible and I make my mind up for a proper title ... :)

The issue earlier was caused by a routing problem, which has been resolved, so all sites should be back to normal.
