@ManuelBellini this one if any... but idk if anyone here is expert in that... have you had a look around to see if there's already an answer to your question on the site? If you don't find anything, maybe you should ask a new question?

@jokerdino thanks :)

@jokerdino hopefully not :)

@Takkat :) I agreed with you because it was reasonable.

@Zanna this one is unfortunately: askubuntu.com/questions/133533/… 797.343 times

@Zanna :)

10:03 AM
@Takkat haha smh

@Zanna i found some questions that problem, but the answer are not working for me...

@ManuelBellini OK, then ask a question and tell us what you tried and how it failed.

I'm happy and conserned at the same time.
I'm happy that I got top 11% this year, but concerned that I haven't commited for a month and I'm still top 11%
oh well, popped on meta.
lets just wait for the bot to put it on

I have an dell precision 5510 with a on board intel GPU and a nvidia M1000M.
If i install the nvidia-370 driver (recommended to me) and then reboot i experience a black screen. Then i tried to do this http://askubuntu.com/a/760935/543758
Then i experience a login loop and tried this http://askubuntu.com/a/223634/543758
But have always the login loop problem...
I get a message that says failed to start kernel modules....
and in /etc/modules is no nvidia or somthing similar...

@Edity It's not a glitch. The vast majority of users only ever post a single question. Anyone who is even a little active will be in the top 20%

you can VTC your own questions?!?

@ManuelBellini OK, but put all that in your question. That's where the most people will see it and somebody might be able to answer.
@Edity yes

is that normal? i posted a question a bit time ago about a screenshot bug (askubuntu.com/q/801378/543758) and now im thinking that things are correlating each other.

O_o

ah

@ManuelBellini btw did the answer to that question solve your problem?

You've gained 196 rep this year and that's more than the vast majority of users.

O-o

@Zanna No, so i don't marked the answer as solution (askubuntu.com/q/801378/543758)...

10:26 AM
ah I see

10:40 AM
i posted my question here http://askubuntu.com/q/833328/543758,
thanks for the help!

are shells two type 1-CLI 2-GUI?
why in User processes we have shell and GUI?

@Sinoosh Yes
> In computing, a shell is a user interface for access to an operating system's services. In general, operating system shells use either a command-line interface (CLI) or graphical user interface (GUI), depending on a computer's role and particular operation. It is named a shell because it is a layer around the operating system kernel.
In computing, a shell is a user interface for access to an operating system's services. In general, operating system shells use either a command-line interface (CLI) or graphical user interface (GUI), depending on a computer's role and particular operation. It is named a shell because it is a layer around the operating system kernel. The design of a shell is guided by cognitive ergonomics and the goal is to achieve the best workflow possible for the intended tasks; the design can be constricted by the available computing power (for example, of the CPU) or the available amount of graphics memory...

11:08 AM
jokerdino has stopped a feed from being posted into this room

o.O

@terdon why in my picture we have shell and GUI

Because both are user processes.
The GUI isn't a shell, it's the GUI. You also have a graphical shell, but that's part of the GUI.

@Sinoosh more examples here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_space

@edwinksl@terdon thanks

2 hours later…
12:54 PM
This is completely about Chromium askubuntu.com/questions/825903/…
why is it protected?
this isn't a dupe, at least of the accepted answer askubuntu.com/questions/829053/…
the second answer is correct, while the first answer no longer works
and the first answer is so long, the second answer isn't getting attention

1:17 PM
@Zacharee1 It has 3 deleted non-answers from 1-rep users.

ah

@Zacharee1 Why isn't it a dupe? It's the same issue AFAIK

The question of same issue i think. no?

@terdon like I said, the accepted answer is obsolete. It doesn't work for GPT systems, which most things are now.
The second answer is much easier and it works, but the first answer is so huge, no one is going to see the second one
We need to either make a new Q&A or edit the first answer to point to the second one at the top or something

Well then, we should upvote the second one

1:19 PM
If a user is looking for answer, he/she will certainly find it.

@terdon I already did.

But how is it obsolete?

But it's not going to get above the first one

> Boot into Windows and power down the system by shutting it down completely. You may then boot back into Ubuntu and the partition will mount in read-write mode automatically when you open it in Nautilus. Note that the "Shut Down" option may not be the one displayed in your start menu by default. You may need to click the button next to it to see further options.

@terdon For the most part, that doesn't work. Fast Boot in Windows 8 broke it unless you use a full shutdown and even then it still doesn't work.
All the Ubuntu-side stuff it suggests doesn't work for Windows 8 and above

1:21 PM
@Zacharee1 You mean the ones suggested in the section about windows 8 and above?

@terdon that's not the Ubuntu sided stuff
and like I said, full shutdown still doesn't work

@Zacharee1 It doesn't? Not even if you "click the button next to it to see further options."?

@terdon No!
Trust me on this. I followed that answer and none of it worked for me
It took me a really long time to find the second answer's solution

OK. You should probably take it to meta then. I know next to nothing about Windows.
You do NOT want to do this. Doing so will result in the filesystem being corrupted when you resume your hibernated windows session. — psusi Jan 4 '15 at 4:24
Either way, though, the question is a dupe. If what you're saying is correct, we just need to fix the answers of the dupe.

@terdon most of the time, there is no hibernated session. Even data partitions are messed up when Windows mounts them
@terdon Alright. I can accept that
But it felt really condescending the way you were questioning everything I said and the way you worded your messages

1:26 PM
I do see various (recent) comments claiming it worked for them though. We need to be sure before changing anything and since I haven't used Windows since the late 90ies, I am not the right person to ask.

Here's the thing. It works perfectly fine for Windows 7 and MBR/legacy systems
Windows 8 and MBR usually works with the manual Ubuntu stuff
Windows 8 and GPT is where problems come up

@Zacharee1 Oh? That was certainly not my intention. I was just asking you why it's obsolete so I could understand. I wasn't assuming you were wrong. I don't know diddle about WIndows.

Sometimes, full shutdown will work. Usually it doesn't.

I wasn't questioning what you said, I was asking for an explanation.

ok

A: Is btrfs stable enough for home usage?

Mark ShuttleworthThe roadmap for btrfs in Ubuntu is to have it as the default filesystem by 12.04 LTS. The likely cutover to default will be 11.04, other distributions may have more or less aggressive plans, but watching them is your best cue to the perceived stability and reliability and performance of the code.

12.04 btrfs.

I wonder if he regrets posting that >:=D

Someone should link it to him.

user136984
@Seth No, why? What's that?

5:46 PM
Hi all :D

ooooh... btrfs.
to be fair, it is a cool platform but it makes no sense.

Q: How do I open "File Manager" in Ubuntu 12.04?

IWPCHII would like to search for an email address in a file on my Ubuntu computer. Q: How do I log out of "Ask Ubuntu"?

IWPCHIWhere did you hide the "log out" button on this website? I search and search and can't find it anywhere. How about making it clearly visible right at the top of the page next to our gravatar/avatar/whatever? And must we hunt for an "appropriate" tag for every post so we can post a comment ...

we're moving to the cloud at a scary fast rate

8:03 PM
@ParanoidPanda did you read it?

and this is going to be the doom of computing

user136984
@Seth: No...

panda...

user136984
@Seth: Looks like a nice site...

8:05 PM
@ParanoidPanda can confirm ring is secure. completely decentralized sorta like DHT/torrent

it doesn't work the best on Linux, as I found out yesterday though :/

user136984
Also, nobody can ever seem to find that Log Out button nor the Chat button (which is probably quite a relief looking at the kind of folks we often get on the main site >:P), for some reason I found them both without any trouble when I first started off here (I have a sort of intuition with user interfaces).

user136984
@KazWolfe: Is it anything like Tox?

better, really
less crashy and problematic
same dynamic key-based account generation though

user136984
I think I'm going to give up with Tox, what used to be the best client (and still is in terms of usability and design) now has evil developers (qTox), but the ones with the nicer developers aren't yet quite up to standards... So it's quite difficult with that one. An alternative would be nice.

8:11 PM
@ParanoidPanda well we're getting a combined score of over 5 clicks per day on the 2 chat ads.

user136984
@Seth: Oh good! Is mine still there then?

user136984
:)

@ParanoidPanda it's not like it's going anywhere :p
so I've got an old Garmin GPS with maps from 2010 and almost 0 battery life. What should I do with it?

user136984
Well, at some point in the past people downvoted it and it stopped being shown, but seems that hasn't happened again.

user136984
Whose chat advert is the most popular?

user136984
8:13 PM
:D

@ParanoidPanda iirc that was because there was a problem with it that you then fixed and all downvotes were reversed.

user136984
Or are they equal and just sharing 1.5 of a user each? :P

749 at 2.88 clicks per day for Fabby and 691 at 2.64 clicks per day for yours.
@Zacharee1 Do the Pixel phones have the same camera as the HTC 10? I know they have the same body design.. The HTC 10 got top camera reviews too.

Hi all! Can I please get a few spam flags on askubuntu.com/a/833468/175814? Thanks.

yeah

8:18 PM
out of flags for today :(

@Seth probably, unless the 10 has OIS.

@DavidFoerster Flag on the question or answer?

@Terrance The link should lead directly to the answer (/a/ is for answers, /q/ for questions). The answer was deleted and locked already though.

I can't settle for no OIS. My hands are so shaky, I can't even take room light photos with my DSLR.

@DavidFoerster It links me to the question, but I see what you're talking about in the link provided in the answer.

8:21 PM
That's.. pretty shaky. :/

Well I may be exaggerating a bit :p
But I do have a pretty unsteady grip

@DavidFoerster Awww, it's gone. :(

@Terrance Ah, that's because the answer was deleted and you need 10k reputation to see deleted posts. It falls back to the question in that case.

@DavidFoerster Yep, that explains a TON!

@DavidFoerster did we flag it to Smokey?

8:28 PM
@KazWolfe I'm not sure what you mean. I didn't find it through smoke detector but through the First Post review queue.

i mean, manually report it to Smokey
so that we can keep an eye out for more of that type of spam

did you manage to nuke your MAC address fun?

oh fun story about MACs.
So at my college a few days ago one of the students somehow/for some reason set the MAC address of his VMWare NIC to the address of that classroom's gateway.
You can imagine the rest.

user136984
So I've installed Ring... Where do you file bug reports?

8:35 PM
@ParanoidPanda maybe check the website? ring.cx/en/bug-report

8:46 PM
@Seth christ

@Seth pls elaborate

yay I just posted an answer
@Zacharee1 all traffic destined for the gateway on the local network went to that students VM instead. Effectively destroying all connectivity in the classroom.
basically the student performed an ARP spoof on the entire class.

right.

well, any new questions then ?
In other news : working hard on my udisks indicator, rewriting a few parts here and there, soon it will be complete and ready for 2.0 release

@Serg i don't think python system indicators work...
I told you he's wanted to expire the bounty in such a way you don't get it

Being away for 12h a day is a remarkable change.
Didn't @Terrance also want to provide an answer?

@KazWolfe well, I'm going to challenge that. That'll take some time though

Hey @KazWolfe did you see my first question? Not sure if it follows the right parameters to be put in meta, so I wanted some outside opinions.

yeah, i did

10:29 PM
So, it fits in meta?

i think so, but the community will be the one to ultimately decide.

Yeah, of course.
How's everybody doing today?

okay, it's fun watching all the hell my bot is raising :D

Alive. Surprisingly, I'm quite energetic considering that i got less than 3 hours of sleep

less than three hours?

10:32 PM
Huh, @Serg I find that there's a sort of threshold of lack of sleep where below that point, I seem really awake, but I'm also super irritable and have a flawed logic flow
Just makes my thought process distorted

it is a fact that about 15% of my income goes to coffee.

Late enough for me, got to get up early tomorrow again. Good night.

i drink a lot of coffee.
and intern pay isn't good

Byte, what time is it for you?
"Good night"... pff it's 5:30 PM here

half past midnight

10:37 PM
@KazWolfe coffee should be handed out for free. It's the fuel of society nowadays

Well now, that's pretty late especially if you need to get up early
Oh, I've never had coffee

@Serg any IT office that does not have a free coffee machine should be committing a felony

Q: My potentially helpful answer possibly lost due to bad question

Owen HinesEarlier, someone posted a "question" (I would hardly consider it that) that was basically him ranting on how he doesn't like how it's difficult to do basic tasks on Ubuntu such as getting the correct permissions to write to a USB and getting an email client to work properly, and the only question...

C is weird (tm)

?
who posted that

you

@ByteCommander I was working on it for a bash script with the times of day and stuff, but I hit a snag on diving deeper in to the /sys folders as my script that I have been testing doesn't want to see any files. :(

10:44 PM
I mean in the chat here
eh, whatever

oh, we have a SE bot that watches for meta posts

Well
Im off to a good start with my first question being closed 15 minutes after it was posted

new way of being evil.
when anyone sends me a paywall link, respond with a picture of the paywall and say "wanna pay?"

who do you know who sends you emails of paywalls?
I thought I had a ton of homework tonight...
I have Spanish -- that's it
(well after doing English and Math)

I'm doing AP Human Geography right now

@Zacharee1 they send me articles on wired or forbes or whatever
they like paywalling adblockers.

@KazWolfe oh yeah. If a visit a site that blocks my adblock, I leave
they're not getting revenue or traffic then
@OwenHines ew

11:27 PM
@Zacharee1 yep, which is why i send back my new "wanna pay" message

heh

if you really want me to read it, you can buy me an account.

is there an adblockblockblock extension?

there is
but i don't care enough to use it
because why do i want to see their clickbait?

Finally there's someone else using a chromebook for Ubuntu!

Evening everyone :) Byte Commander posted a question last night asking how to fast boot the machine skipping BIOS, Grub and Login screen. A posted a comment but I can't seem to see history of comments I posted. To relocate the question. I also don't know how to call up his profile to see his recent questions. Any tips for finding his question again?

I just have to be careful, because if the regular users catch wind...they will want it too...

@TheXed Yes. Except for that one nerd that nobody talks to.
(P.S. that was me)

@NathanOsman I haven't meet him yet...
or I am him...

Yeah, you must be he.
(No, that is correct. "he" is being used in the nominative case here. Further proof that I am the nerd :P)

@TheXed Does that bother you?

you and your predicate nominatives
