@Zanna What comments would you want to clean up? I see no need, they're all related to the post.

@ByteCommander I took out the part you were talking about

@Zanna ok, done. You have 2 more left.

Nice edit :)
Thank you

12:20 AM
odd thing, i made a small indicator to test a few things, but it doesn't show up
invisible

@Serg Declare it as a feature and wait until OMGUbuntu posts an article about it ;)
Invisible is the new black.

/facepalm

@ThomasWard I just googled rsync for Android and there are lots of hits. — WinEunuuchs2Unix 30 mins ago
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Uhm...... explain the relevance of your comment please, I'm curious.
to everyone else, greetings.

o/

@ThomasWard how old are you?

12:30 AM
@Windows3.1 26, why?

just wondering
you looked really young on your profile picture :)
maybe that was from a few years ago

that's cause it's old

gravatar is being updated shortly
there, updated image (nuke the cache!)
I look better in a suit though :P

@ThomasWard I find you look more personable with beard and baseball cap :)

12:41 AM
eh

@edwinksl @NathanOsman thanks for the tip on posting that protocol question on stackoverflow, I finally got one answer, it seems the book where the doubt came from could be wrong after all..

lol

Q: Using Gtk.Widgets in App Indicators with Python

SergIn 2010 Stefano Palazzo , asked a related question, Putting an arbitrary gtk.Widget into an appindicator.Indicator, and similar one was asked on StackOverflow. In both cases the consensus is that Ubuntu's App Indicators are limited. As Michael Ekstrand put it: The Application Indicator menu s...

This ^ will have a bounty in couple of days
I'm willing to set the largest one, 500 rep

1:00 AM
is that toggle button a default Gtk object or is it a image object that is coded to work like a toggle button?

@IanC yes, there is Gtk.Switch which is default. I strongly doubt it's an image

just found it, my bad :p

The bluetooth indicator is in vala, and i've no vala experience, so i couldn't trace how they got it to work

you tried adding it to the menu with no success?
like, does it appear at least?

Has anyone ever heard of the XanMod kernel?
Its features sound interesting, I'm considering to try it sooner or later.

1:05 AM
@terdon @muru So remember how I like using main() function in my bash scripts ? well, i'm not the only one, and there's a good reasoning for that: unix.stackexchange.com/q/313256/85039

Oh, just noticed that I recently passed 30k network rep. \o/

@IanC I tried adding many things. The only thing that can be added is Gtk.Label() widget. Anything else, doesn't show up
I spend whole morning tweaking it left, right, upside-down. Nothing works
@ByteCommander congratz :)

@ThomasWard You told the OP there is no way of syncing Android Phone music to Ubuntu so I googled it and there were lots of hits. It was during queue review so I don't have the question at hand.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix um, no?
I told them that Mint was offtopic

I remember the off-topic part too. I didn't comment on that.

1:08 AM
I suggest you re-read the question they asked, and my comment (below). I said nothing about rsync or syncing.
Mint is not Ubuntu, and is offtopic here. Please visit Unix and Linux for Mint questions. — Thomas Ward ♦ 1 hour ago

@ByteCommander do they give the XanMod kernel compiled and packaged or do they give some configuration script?

Someone else said "No, you can't"

@IanC You can download the deb from their site, I think.

LOL yes our little warrior friend. My apologies... It was queue review and my eyes were bleeding and my brain was exploding.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix This is usually when I get coffee :)

1:10 AM
I can only do coffee in the AM... Beer works better when the sun goes down.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix also, iPhone and Android are different
the OP asked about syncing iPhone
not Android

@Serg I'm not sure how to load the Gtk Switch, but as a last resort you could try using images to make something similar

all good though :)

Oh I didn't know "I" phone I was thinking "My" phone...it's android :p

but there's probably a way, I might play around with Gtk trying it

@IanC I could do that, but the problem is that getting images into indicators is also a pain. I can get only small icons to work there. Rhythmbox icon being an exeption - that sucker loads full 24x24 icon for whatever reason.

@ThomasWard You would think Tim Cook would have had his iPhones sync with Linux by now. Not to mention iTunes for Linux.

@ThomasWard why this is localized ? askubuntu.com/q/249/295286
I mean . . . that's not that good of a reason to close a question
maybe we should reopen ?

@Serg and then close as "too broad", or "opinion based" because they ask "What is the best way"
iPhone 3G is pretty old at this point though
i think they discontinued updates for it around when the 5s came out
which would be a while ago

Mkay, that's valid actually

1:15 AM
which could explain 'localized'

@ByteCommander cool, I might give it a try! Won't need to spend 4 hours compilating it to see it crashing in front of me :p

the only iPhone 3G i know of (still) existing is in a drawer back in Pittsburgh, and it's my sister's old one, at this point a paperweight/relic

btw, I still need to finish the compilation of the kernel on my VM, I totally forgot about it

:)
Tell me how it works when you tested it.

@ThomasWard Can I delete my bad review comment on rsync with Android without offending the following commentators, ie you and Serg?

1:17 AM
wouldn't offend me, I"ll just prune my messages. Serg is in here if you want his opinion. Though, obsolete comments are that, so... :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix my comment is gone, feel free to remove yours

@Serg ^^^ 2 posts
ty
@ThomasWard I have lots of pruning to do being a "noob" :p

eh, you're fine. :)

ok, I'm off to play with getting sound files to play instead of annoying motherboard beep.... have fun everyone!

Q: Installing WiFi driver on machine with no internet

RyanNI have an old laptop with only a WiFi card for internet access. I've installed lubuntu server since it would fit on a CD (no DVD). It didn't recognize my Linksys WPC54Gv3 adapter, so I downloaded the bcm43xx-fwcutter_005-2_i386.deb on another machine and copied it over on a thumb drive. When I t...

good evening Nathan!

1:52 AM
hello Awesome Man!

Evening

+President @NathanOsman how's it going?

@Zacharee1 yikes. good info

@Zacharee1 We've seen that one a hundred times before.

what kind of network topology are you currently using?

@TheXed Pretty much star here.
One router to rule them all. And with one cable to bind them.
Or... something like that.

cheap, no redundancy?

2:46 AM
It's a home network.
It doesn't have to survive WW3.

ugh
can we have another season of Futurama?
plsss

Okay...but don't you want to make your neighbors jelly when their Internet is down and yours isn't (which I have done before)

@Chan-HoSuh ohai

@Zacharee1 hey, how's it going?

work work work work work work

2:48 AM
Oh hey, congratulations. You just wrote a hit song!

school work, or a job?

school

@NathanOsman oh god no
there

@Zacharee1 No, you did it - not me!

2:49 AM
lol :D

It's not my fault society is dumb enough to like that kind of... "music".

I'm missing the reference

You don't want the reference.

unless you're just talking about dumb music in general

Yup, popular music in America is dumb.
And of course, also Canada too.
Since we're practically the 51st state.
:D

2:50 AM
I was about to get defensive and do some Canada bashing.. but that's better

We're not all that different, sadly.

I was reading about evil Canadians the other day. Taking over the suit industry.

dude, the guy lives in Canada :P

It isn't me. I hate suits.
@Seth Which guy?

wait nvm. I misread what was said -.-
I'm so tired.

2:51 AM
I am exhausted from work today, myself. Stayed an extra hour or so just to try to make a dent in the amount that needs doing.

I read somewhere that Canada makes very bad tasting beer...

I have no idea. I have yet to try any.

I have never had Canadian beer either

@TheXed You owe us a visit then :D

Well the mainstream Canadian beer isn't much different than the mainstream American

2:53 AM
"mainstream" meaning "garbage", I assume.

You have all the Bud light type stuff, then you have the slightly less light stuff

wait a sec. canada isn't safe.
Justin Bieber came from Canada. what other horrors are lurking up there?!
WE NEED A WALL

@KazWolfe Uh-huh... meanwhile you have every other major pop star that ever existed...

@NathanOsman WE NEED A WALL AROUND OURSELVES
KEEP THEM IN. TRADE EMBARGO ON MUSIC, GO!

We need a wall too. I'll help you build it :D

2:55 AM
Canada needs a wall to protect themselves from Beiber coming back...
5

okay. we'll need 4 cubic feet of wood.

We don't want Trump (or That Other Person™) up here.

Too bad. We're deporting Trump to Canada.

The problem with Trump is he turnips...

We figure a bunch of niceness exposure will fix things.

2:56 AM
@TheXed That and 13,892 other things...
@KazWolfe Sorry.

Hey did anyone watch the debate?

yep

Didn't you catch the live coverage here?

i think most every american here did

I missed the first 10 minutes but watched the rest. Sadly

2:57 AM
I'm so making a bookmark.
It was hillary-ous.

@NathanOsman we're revoking your mod powers for that

Lol.

America is in a tough spot

I would have loved to hear Canadian commentary on the Debate...
that would have been worth watching!

yeah. Trump will start World War III.
And Hillary will leak everything to Russia.

2:58 AM
There is no way to really punish all the politicians for making their bad decisions except to vote in some crazy guy. But that's a bad idea in and of itself.

@Chan-HoSuh yes, North Korea has done that for the last 40 years...well I guess, without the voting part anyways...

lol, yep without the voting part

so... the only way to end this cycle in America is to vote in someone sane.

I think China finally realized helping some crazy guy nearby build nuke capability isn't a great idea.

Which is never happened because nobody sane is ever a nominee of the Democrats or Republicans.

3:01 AM
Actually the problem is those people are too sane. They are maximizing their own self-interest.

Yeah China is going to get screwed over on that deal...they are going to be drug into a Nuclear war with the United States that they don't want to be in, in the first place...

@Chan-HoSuh or... China sees "hey, let's take their nukes, because we get more!"

China owns America anyway.

I guess the reason I brought that up, other than because of the North Korea reference, is because obviously the Chinese leadership thought long and hard and somehow came to an incredibly stupid decision. But at an earlier point it might have made some sense.

3:02 AM
But hey....we have bigger/faster boats...and ladies...

though what proof do we have that NK even has anything close to a nuke?

@TheXed Pretty sure every culture has that... or they wouldn't exist.

No China does own America...without America, China's economy would be devastated... They need the United States...

Dat haircut says everything.

besides north korea media?

3:03 AM
@TheXed Pfffffffffffffffftt.
China owns nearly every valuable asset in the US.

@TheXed Yet if China were to embargo us, we'd have a huge shortage of goods because we can't swap over to local production fast enough
or cheap enough

If they suddenly decided, "hey, let's recall everything we loaned to America" you guys would be done.
Your liquid assets are a drop in the bucket.

@KazWolfe yea, but The US had a large enough Army to invade Canada and win...
@NathanOsman they would never do that though because they need American Consumerism...

when did we invade canada?

@KazWolfe You stay out of this.
@KazWolfe Oh, you mean when we beat you guys up in 1812?

3:06 AM
@KazWolfe WE haven't yet...but we canme close back in the 1700's

Our government is already spying on you guys.

@KazWolfe You think you're spying on us >:)

@NathanOsman No, Snowden kinda spelled it out

He's also American... Coincidence? I DON'T THINK SO.

the US controls the majority of the internet, right?

3:07 AM
Puts on tinfoil hat.

NSA spies on the US, and all communications in/out, right?

@KazWolfe They used to.
Then ICANN handed it off.

@NathanOsman I still think the majority of serious infrastructure and the central backbone is in the US.

@KazWolfe no, Al Gore single handily controls the Internet...

@TheXed so why are there no popups for global warming?

3:08 AM
@KazWolfe CERN has all the storage.

There are...ever hear of pop-up blockers?

^--- pop-up blocker

@NathanOsman lol]\
well my wfe had made it really awkward fo rme to type

@KazWolfe besides North Korean propaganda, there is a leaked US intelligence report that suggests they have "low reliability" nukes: bloomberg.com/news/articles/2013-04-11/…

so I guess that mean I either kick her off the couch or head to bed\

3:12 AM
speaking of north korea
some poor sysadmin there got executed, probably as with the rest of his family on live TV

and if I try to kick her off the couch it might be like a Nuke going off from North Korea...
slo I guess I will see you later gaterz

@NathanOsman China owns a big chunk of American debt, but nowhere near everything
And it's not that different from Japan

Japan actually has more American Debt then China..

@NathanOsman i approve.

3:22 AM
Why is amazon recommending the German edition of Randall Munroe's Thing Explainer to me?

the question is what will china do if the US decides to just all-out invade and wipe NK off the face of the earth.
which can honestly probably be done in 3 months

Why wouldn't China just invade Canada?

also. We really need AskUbuntu shirts. Can we please have those?
@Chan-HoSuh Why did Napoleon fail to take over Russia?

Dunno :) but hard to see the relevance here

same reason
too cold

3:27 AM
it's not that cold
Siberia vs Toronto

Still. Imagine how much less cold it would be with an AskUbuntu hoodie (available for $29.99)!

huh, you selling them?
I wanted a StackOverflow shirt, but they stopped selling them

i want one too
an askubuntu shirt would be great
HOW IS ZANNA ALREADY 100 REP BEHIND ME

@KazWolfe is awesome
that's why

@Windows3.1 you have been made obsolete by version 3.11

3:34 AM
i think someone got into my car today
apparently they took a lighter and a knife
surprisingly , they didn't take any change
or just didn't see it at the bottom of the compartment

did you lose them, Serg?

@KazWolfe when I left my car on the parking today before catching train to go to work, i distinctly remember leaving a lighter on the passenger's seat. And the knife is always there. Plus i'm not entierly insane not to remember throwing pencils around passenger side and receipts from tire change

why would someone break into a car just for a lighter and knife?

I doubt it was just for those. They expected to find a gps or something probably
I'm really confused right now

@Chan-HoSuh B-b-but we live in igloos!
(j/k)

3:39 AM
@NathanOsman thanks for clarifying ... -_-

First, the windshield. Now this.

do you lock your car?

I do. I distinctly remember locking it. Although I'm pretty sure that's not anything special. My car is pretty easy to open if you know how
I once locked the keys inside my car, so called the locksmith service. I've AAA insurance, so they provide us those services. I watched the locksmith guy open it up. Really piece of cake

At least they didn't break the window like last time.

yeah . . . i don't earn nearly enough to keep changing windshields every month

3:53 AM
@Serg man, where do you live and/or park your car...?? sounds like a crime heavy area

@Chan-HoSuh exactly the opposite. I live in pretty much suburban, middle-class area. Since my university is close to downtown, i part at one of the light rail stations, and catch light rail to downtown. So, when my windshield was broken , it was also at quite nice area, close to Denver Tech Center. Since then i was parking at the one closer to my home ( closer being 15 - 20 minute drive ).
Honestly , i'd expect the widshield to be broken more at the one i parked today, than at the other one.
I sure can drive all the way to downtown, but i can't spend so much money on gasoline,too

4:09 AM
hey
@Chan-HoSuh quit trolling me: I can not change my name until October because of SE's horrible limitation

@Windows3.1 tried asking mods ?

hmm
@NathanOsman can you force change me to Windows 3.11 ?

Why not jump straight to Windows 98 :D Nathan likes Windows 98

@Windows3.1 Nope. Only a site mod can do that and only with a good reason.

@Serg that used to be my IRC nickname
but I like windows 3.1 better
@NathanOsman who are the site mods?

4:18 AM
Hey, @ThomasWard got a new gravatar.
I like it.

@Serg ok.. sorry to hear the bad news in any case. I hope your insurance covered it

4:34 AM
Nah, didn't cover anything
paid 200 out of pocket

stupid minecraft servers and their mods, then.

@Zanna your snakey bias is showing!

haha true
I am so sleep deprived, I can't think of any useful commands to do with sh
my mum is telling me an anecdote haha can't fix it

@Zanna this would be a classic example stackoverflow.com/questions/82256/…

you don't need sh for that though

well, sh is not absolutely needed, but that is one possible usage
variation on the same theme as the first link askubuntu.com/questions/830766/…
i personally prefer the tee solution though :D

8:14 AM
ditto, I always use tee for that, then I can see wtf I wrote to that file...
considering I am super typo-prone
thanks for the example anyway :D as usual you bailed me out

bail people out? i do no such thing :p

8:33 AM
Evening @Zanna and @edwinksl :)

evening @andrew.46, very good to see you
how are things?

Good, a day off and I actually found some AU questions I could answer :)
Oops only one :(
On an even more positive note my 'old school' usenet client slrn will have a new release soon, I have just heard......

I slept 3 hours last night, I feel rubbish... maybe I should try and sleep

as usual, read man bash

@edwinksl yes, very effective

maybe one day you will finish reading all of it

time to completely get rid of it and use exclusively mint or ubuntu LTS :)

he needs to run an old version of Autocad
his windows is borked, but I can't help with that hehe

9:47 AM
@Zanna but i think he can run xp programs in windows 7 using "compatibility mode" right
at least that's what i remember from my dark days of using windows...

@edwinksl I have no idea :)
