5:00 PM
I'm always running as a dumb user for all of my stuff, and I takes 2 kinds of back-ups:
system backups and data backups...

@terdon May I ask, what did I miss?

Do forensic can recover deleted files or files hidden in root

Read here for more info...

Backups? Every day via rsnapshot and NAS

@A.B. Well, Mudit asked how Linux can be cruel and I answered that it's easy, just run echo "rm r -rf ~/" >> ~/.bashrc and then open a new terminal. I assumed he would know what that command meant and wouldn't actually run it.
I also said "DO NOT DO THIS" right under it :(

5:01 PM
o_O

Unfortunately, poor Mudit actually ran it.

@terdon anyway, Ubuntu standard is HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth

@Fabby Ah, cool.

all files are deleted but do folders are also files in Linux

yup.
even devices are files
actually: everything is a file!

5:03 PM
@Fabby I wonder what it will take to change that to HISTCONTROL=ignoreboth:erasedups

so what are the losses for me
only files or OS files also

@MuditKapil Well, all folders and files in your home directory will have been removed.

@MuditKapil you've lost all of your data files...

Nothing outside your home should have been touched.

no OS files...

5:04 PM
Linux can be cruel but it only does what you tell it to do. If you want it to be cruel , it will be

yup :)

@MuditKapil Please, read the back-up Q&A! (user type 4 at a minimum)

Or if you do what random idiots on the internet like myself tell you to.

wise man

@terdon :D

5:04 PM
can anyone access my root folder also if the password of root has changed

I once did a:

and If I login graphically as root

(NO ONE TO TYPE NEXT COMMAND)

@MuditKapil What do you mean by access? Read, sure. Edit/delete, no.

oi

5:05 PM
(typo ; instead of .)
then i saw:

@Fabby Oh man

@terdon even if the password is changed for root

BAK not found...

@Fabby You are dangerous

@Fabby remove every backup files ?

5:05 PM
NO
your /

@Serg that's what I WANTED to do

and than executes bak

@MuditKapil Reading, yes, for most files/dirs. You only need the password to modify. For some, you'll also need the password to read.

And @A.B. got it!

oh, gawd

5:06 PM
yes, restore backup from DAT-tape was next...

whoami;bak

@Fabby Were you root at the time?

and it was a Friday, so I had to restore Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, ... Friday!
@terdon IBM AIX system: yes

Ouch

So that's why I always run as a normal user!
Not even admin!

5:08 PM
Well, at least rm -rf / won't do anything bad.
Not on Linux or most Unices.

(I do have an admin tab open, but I'm really careful in that one as the PS1 is red... and for the other users green)

I have another command
sudo kill -9 -1

@A.B. That's OK, worst case scenario is that you need to reboot.

@A.B. what does that do?

lights off

5:09 PM
kill init?
I thought that was 1

Kill all processes you can kill.

I'm definitely not going to try!
ah! Cool!
in my case I'd have to sudo it in the admin terminal...

I like the phrase "Kill all processes you can kill."

oh, according to man, it doesn't kill init
A PID of -1 is special; it indicates all processes except the kill process itself and init.

kos
Who wants to try this? eval "$(echo ZWNobyBCb29tCg== | base64 -d)"

5:12 PM
OK, I'm going back to writing cover letters!

Boom
I can read the Matrix

kos
Damn you were fast!

echo ZWNobyBCb29tCg== | base64 -d
echo boom

No, I have a open terminal =)

eval $(echo boom)
boom

5:13 PM
@Fabby "-1"

he @Fabby -1
eval $(echo "boom")
=P

eval "$(echo Boom)"

Well, that is of import, since you can send signals to init:
0
A: Sending different kill signals to init - how to log

muruI'm afraid there's no general way to "log" init's reaction. First, there's the fact that kill won't deliver any signals to init that init isn't handling (from man 2 kill): NOTES The only signals that can be sent to process ID 1, the init process, are those for which init ha...

kos
Without the eval fever there's no joy however

@muru Really funny! You just made me laugh!

5:17 PM
:D

Too bad I can't upvote twice!
1: Nothing to be detected here. 2: User the source, Luke!

A line I want to use more often.

I like this one...
I flagged it as spam, it was denied, then I VTC with "other" and then the OP deleted his answer!
(denied by a moderator! >:))
I'm good at finding product placement (which I consider spam)

Probably should be asked on that new Open Source Stack Exchange

Which one?
(smoke! BRB!)

5:26 PM
What happened?
My bad, it's not started yet:
251
Open Source

Proposed Q&A site for people organizing, marketing or licensing open source development projects.

Currently in commitment.

@muru I went for a smoke! :D
@muru That'll get lots of product placement!

@muru why did you delete my whitespace solution? :P
@muru Wow, it just did. Did someone commit just now or something?

@Fabby Is there some AskUbuntu App also down-loadable from Google Play

5:42 PM
Does anyone remember at ed?
1
A: Get two files in a single

A.B.Using sed: sed '/^/ r h.txt' k.txt or with ed (echo '0a'; cat k.txt; echo '.'; echo 'wq') | ed -s h.txt

kos
Is there any real difference in running a pipe in a subshell which forks into two subshells vs. running a command in a subshell which then uses a process substitution?

@MuditKapil There is one for Ubuntu Touch!
(which I'm using!) :P

There is an official Android app.

@Fabby whenever i use Ask Ubuntu on my android it ask ya ok

Hmmm... I would have thought apps would one-box...

5:44 PM
I thought as i download google app from googleplaydownloader without log-in gmail someone get annoyed

@A.B. Your ed one doesn't do anything for me.

@terdon Nothing?

> "WhatsApp Desktop A free and Open Source unofficial desktop client for Mac, Windows and linux has been released. And it works beautifully." - WhatsApp Desktop, Unofficial Desktop Client Released - EuroBytes

@blade19899 What's WhatsApp?
>:)

@Fabby Really? -_-"

5:48 PM
 $ (echo '0a'; cat k.txt; echo '.'; echo 'wq') | ed -s h.txt
Newline appended

@blade19899 Standard Q when someone mentions it!

@A.B. ^

sorry BRB

Neither file is changed and no output is shown. But I'm testing on 2 files with no final newline.

@Fabby Sure ;D

5:49 PM
@terdon Oops!

:)

Find people that use tox, and then add them: toxme.se
I added oli. I think.

@terdon I have also no final newline

@blade19899 Can tox do video chat and screen sharing by now?

@blade19899 Cool, I did not know such an index exists.
I wonder how two clients can contact each other without a server in between anyway...

6:03 PM
@Fabby VIdeo chat since like forever, i even tested it out.

@A.B. Yes and I added a newline to one of the files and it made no difference. What output do you get?

@Fabby "Desktop Sharing" is a "yes" as stated here: wiki.tox.im/Clients#Features

Which client should I chose? qTox?
(going to install in the next few minutes...)

Spell Check, Contact Blocking, and iOS are not supported. at this time
@Fabby QTOX

Thanks!

6:06 PM
@Fabby How to istall:
> sudo sh -c 'echo "deb https://repo.tox.im/ nightly main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/tox.list'
wget -qO - https://repo.tox.im/pubkey.gpg | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https
sudo apt-get update

@blade19899 reading!

Then:
> sudo apt-get install qtox
@Fabby Okay! :D

3 5 7 9 19 20
000010
100001
111001
@terdon ^
in h.txt

@blade19899 qtox does not have a feature to publish the ID yet, you can only do this manually - right?

@ByteCommander Yes that is correct, you need to do this manually, in: toxme.se

6:11 PM
Okay... Maybe I will, maybe not.

@ByteCommander @blade19899: you both have my skype address, how do I add you to qtox?

You need our or we need your tox-ID.

@Fabby Click on the "+"

I'll skype you mine.

@A.B. Doesn't work here:
$ printf "000010
> 100001
> 111001" > h.txt
terdon@badabing foo $ printf "3 5 7 9 19 20 " >k.txt
terdon@badabing foo $ (echo '0a'; cat k.txt; echo '.'; echo 'wq') | ed -s h.txt
Newline appended
terdon@badabing foo $ cat h.txt
000010
100001
111001terdon@badabing foo $ cat k.txt
3 5 7 9 19 20 terdon@badabing foo $

6:12 PM
And this is mine:
QTox ID ^

Remove!
(got it)

I post that ID here a bunch of times. Nothing bad happens.

@blade19899 Was uploading a picture on an answer. Looks quite snazzy doesn't it? :D

@RPiAwesomeness Yeah
This is the groupbot of QTox:
> 56A1ADE4B65B86BCD51CC73E2CD4E542179F47959FE3E0E21B4B0ACDADE51855
Add him with the text "invite"
He can help you out with QTox

> It appears that qTox has to use the old tox1 protocol to access DNS record of your friend's Tox ID.
Unfortunately tox1 is not secure, and you are at risk of someone hijacking what is sent between you and ToxDNS service.
Should tox1 be used anyway?
If unsure, press “No”, so that request to ToxDNS service will not be made using unsecure protocol.
Bad bot.

6:16 PM
@ByteCommander How did you get that?

@blade19899 Sent inInvite sent...

Enter bot ID, click on friend request.

@Fabby Choose a proper name

Same as here...

A long list of code, does not define you ;)
Or does it xD
In the Message box, you have to type in "invite"
I just had the same error, when I didn't added Invite in the message box

6:18 PM
$ cat k.txt
3 5 7 9 19 20 %
$ cat h.txt
000010
100001
111001%
(echo "0a"; cat k.txt; echo ""; echo "."; echo "w out.txt"; echo "q") | ed -s h.txt
$ cat out.txt
3 5 7 9 19 20
000010
100001
111001
@terdon ^

No "I" but "invite"
lower cases
Did you guys added the groupbot?

After Effects is fun to derp around in, but using a version that's outdated by like 7 years isn't.

o_O 177/200

Shape animation has thus far proven to be too complicated :P

6:28 PM
Epic: Earn 200 daily reputation 50 times
I have 22 =)

I have none! \o/
sobs in the corner

Come on, do not cry
=)

:) I'm only kidding.
I'm not expecting to be getting 200 reps a day. I'm simply not active enough, nor am I experienced enough to be getting the repz

Is this correct? <!-- language: lang-perl -->
in an answer?

Question for those who are more experienced than I in programming/versioning.

6:31 PM
@Fabby I think I've found how can root be logged in without showing up in the last command (which is what the OP wants, last reads the wtmp log , right ? ) . But I think I'm not gonna post it, it kinda smell fishy to me. There's a good (security) reason to keep track of all logins

>:)

People, I have made a "Ask Ubuntu General Room" on QTox.. So, install it.

Otherwise I'll delete my answer...

i don't trust that guy

I was looking into Sematic Versioning for my projects. However, they seem to be talking about APIs.

6:32 PM
@blade19899 Is there an Android version?

Does Semantic Versioning still apply for non-library work?

@Serg Me neither...

So Verizon just bought AOL.
@RPiAwesomeness nope.

@NathanOsman Awesome :)
I'll just stick to my MAJOR.MINOR.MICRO scheme then.
Did you see the cardboard programmer I made? :)
@blade19899 Can you chat with people on Skype via QTox?

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness yes! it does!

6:36 PM
@jrg Well, bother. Now we have conflicting views :P

one of my friend Sabeer has also sold his email portal to Microsoft long time ago

@RPiAwesomeness nope, I didn't see it.

k..gimme a sec
3 hours ago, by RPi Awesomeness
user image
Even comes with interchangeable messages!
I would've printed him in color ... but our inkjet was out :P

I'm on my phone, otherwise I'd scroll back.
Oh cool!

:)
Oh yeah. And I had to set up my mom's new Windows computer.
O.O The amount of crapware on that thing was insane
And it wasn't quick to remove either...
Thank goodness for Ninite Installer and CCleaner.
17 min on the download for 0ad...gonna give this thing a try.

jrg
6:40 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Use semver for everything. For an application, breaking change is to remove a user-facing feature.

@jrg Ah. Well, that's essentially what I've been doing already!

jrg
Adding a new feature, but not removing any, is not a Bad Thing (tm).

Only one … o_O

jrg
The other thing is you can datetimestamp your releases (what's what I do for webapps)

@jrg Do that too :)
Just the date, though

jrg
6:41 PM
I don't have v1,v2,v3. i have 2015.06.23.1440

@A.B. QTox has an Android client! See: wiki.tox.im/Clients

jrg
(Timezones are obvs in my local timezone, only because I'm the only person)

@RPiAwesomeness No. Only if they have a tox client installed on there system.

@blade19899 Ah :P

Skype, and tox are two different systems!

6:42 PM
I figured as much
I'd totally switch. Getting my friends to do so would be the hard part :P

Now, I gotta go!
Bye 0/

I use Git hashes for versioning web apps :P

heh, that works too

jrg
@NathanOsman I need to report these to humans.

6:43 PM
Oh.

@NathanOsman Oh! Just released v1.0.0 of my Beam.pro chat bot!

Anyway, that's what we use for 2buntu.

Websockets, REST, and asyncio are ... interesting

@RPiAwesomeness awesome!

6:44 PM
Yes, they are.

@RPiAwesomeness Start with your friends here! :P

@Fabby :)

I keep walking in and out of coverage, so I apologize if the conversation is difficult to follow.

I just installed qTox, but it doesn't like my microphone

lol :)

6:46 PM
@NathanOsman WHAT? CAN YOU SPEAK UP? ;-)

Working on adding a urwid control console thingy for the bot now.
Figuring out how to get asyncio to run stuff in parallel took some work, but eventually got it working :)

anybody knows how to make mksh history file to be text file , not binary ?

user136984
I feel very strange after watching this and it has been giving me some odd dreams too! :D

I need a smoke BRB
@Serg Sorry no, what is mksh? ;)

6:53 PM

@ParanoidPanda I don't click on youtube videos with ugly faces in their preview image.

pFbcZqmUzyoBxGDCRAbzcCebQxMNYU

6:59 PM
@blade19899 lol, isn't that the company that is banning users that are using unoffical clients...
