@A.B. May break X ... maybe ... :(

2:12 PM
Happy Xmas @DavidFoerster :)

Happy holidays, everyone!

@DavidFoerster Frohe Weinachten!

@Fabby: thanks!
*Weihnachten
…stupid German orthography
…only making sense, once you know the spelling of the word stem

ah!
Entschuldigung! Ich sollte meinen deutschen Rechtschreibprüfung aktiviert haben müssen!
(doesn't sound right) ----^ @cl-netbox @DavidFoerster

nope, it doesn't

user136984
2:22 PM
Ooh! I do love Pandas! :D

@Fabby fast richtig : Entschuldigung! Ich sollte meine deutsche Rechtschreibprüfung aktiviert haben. - aber trotzdem ... sehr gut ! :)

Danke schön! :-)
Luckily Takkat isn't around or he would have migrated all that the the German language chat! :D

@Fabby Du bist der Beste ! :)

@Fabby Apart from the awkwardly superfluous "müssen" at the end, that's pretty good. If you want to dabble with conditional past tense, you probably want to say: "Ich hätte meine deutsche Rechtschreibprüfung aktivieren sollen."

Ah! That's what I was looking for! -----^
I can still understand it pretty well, it's just the speaking bit...
(let alone writing!)
;-)

2:26 PM
pretty straightforward from english actually: should have activated → hätte aktivieren sollen

@ParanoidPanda So basically, you're just a [narcissist]! :D :P

@Fabby Don't mind ... german language is somewhat ... let's say crazy and difficult sometimes ... :)

@cl-netbox Well my native language is part of the Germanic group, so it should be easier!
(but then: English belonged to the Germanic group 1000 years ago!)

@Fabby or in simpler words : you're just a panda ! :D

user136984
@Fabby: :D

2:29 PM
@cl-netbox Well, I was going to look it up in the dictionary for him, but then I got sidetracked by complex German sentences! ;-)

@Fabby :D

user136984
2:49 PM
What does the kernel parameter 3 actually do?

@ParanoidPanda The first time I ever saw this "3" ! :)

user136984
Maybe it means to go to TTY 3 or something instead of TTY7 by default?

user136984
I don't know, anyway, stolen answer here.

@ParanoidPanda : I found it - it boots directly to Ctrl + Alt + F1 without having to press the keys.

user136984
@cl-netbox: Oh right, but does it actually stop the GUI from launching in TTY7 because I want the GUI only to start if I execute startx in one of the TTYs.

3:02 PM
@ParanoidPanda I dont't think so ... when you want to change to GUI you have to press Ctrl + Alt + F7.

user136984
@cl-netbox: Right, but I want all of the TTYs to be the console, it I switch to one I don't want to find a GUI unless I have run startx in that one.

@ParanoidPanda Do you understand the second answer ? I don't ! - GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text" ???

user136984
Well, the second answer is actually stolen so I didn't really look that much into it, but I broke a Linux Mint machine once with that text kernel parameter... :D

user136984
The text one should mean that it boots straight to the console rather than to any GUI.

user136984
But that it is only for machines running upstart, the others which have systemd need to use the other supplied method, I don't know, I'll test in my VM later and see if any of them work...

3:06 PM
Stealing answers ? who does this ? seems that I am still not used to everything ... but I saw he linked the original ...

user136984
@cl-netbox: Yes, this guy seems to have just copied and pasted someone else's answer, even if he has given credit for it, it still doesn't feel right though I haven't actually looked at the original answer.

@ParanoidPanda close as dupe - if the answer is word for word the whole thing should be in a quote box, but if the answer is the same most likely it should be closed as a dupe or not right for the question

user136984
@Mateo: Just because the answer is the same to my question, does not mean the question is a dupe, plus the answer doesn't fully answer my question, nor is my question an exact match to the possible dupe.

so, I downvoted the copy/paste as it dosnt fit
just saying he should have flagged as dupe if he felt the answer was exact the same

user136984
Yeah, but he wanted the rep so he's going to have to learn the hard way. >:P

3:18 PM
woah, looks like someone figured out Netflix on the raspi, I'll have to try it out later

@ParanoidPanda DV&C...

user136984
@Fabby: DV&C? Digested Videos & Cameras? :P

downvote & comment? :p

user136984
Oh... :D

user136984
No, I prefer my one... :P

3:28 PM
@ParanoidPanda Have you seen that the answer was deleted ?

user139252
Jet lag has me all confused! How is everyone?

@HeatherBrown I am fine and what about you ? Merry Xmas ! :)

@HeatherBrown jetlag does that.
Happy boxing day ;p

user139252
I am tired! But glad to be home. No boxing day here :p

lol
Sure you do! (Unless its a britishism)

3:36 PM
Hi @JourneymanGeek Happy Xmas for you as well ! :)

happy tree day.

so I have a secret hat o.o

which one?

sun wukong

3:40 PM
no idea how i got it

user139252
@Fabby tell your cousin that I did invent Monopoly. I just had to time travel to do so. :p

o0
You're HG Wells? ;p

user139252
My name does start with an H... :p

3:55 PM
;p
(totally noticed that ;p)
Also someone mentioned warehouse 13 on another chat

user139252
I'm not nearly as pretty as that HG Wells :p

lol
XD. I'm not sure of a safe answer to that

user139252
That was a good show. Too bad it was SciFi channel, so the budget was so low

yeah
but sci fi's been doing some decent stuff since
And to an extent some shows make the low budget work for them

user139252
They do Helix, right?

user139252
4:03 PM
I like that one

I didn't watch that
I was watching dark matter (which was decent, and would have been right at home in the late 90s) and killjoys tho
I should watch it. Io9 completely hated it.
And they hate gotham so much the write a loathing filled review after every episode and I love that show.

user139252
I thought the first season was good. Haven't had time to watch the second yet. I only have Netflix and Hulu, no cable

ahh
Oh.
lol
(I get my tv shows... elsewhere)
We have cable, but I'd likely get netflix when its available here. I watch most of my TV on my computer(s)

@JourneymanGeek you should watch Jessica Jones.

@Rinzwind I did
Its a good show

4:08 PM
Dark Matter was pretty good yes. Would have fitted in the 90s sci-fi
@JourneymanGeek and Daredevil?

yuuuup

user139252
I liked that one too. I think Daredevil was a bit better, though

just caught up last week
Daredevil was more classic super hero
Jessica Jones was more charecter driven IMO

Jups. I love what Tennant did in it

Also, on the edge of being too disturbing to watch.
God, Tennant was goooood

user139252
4:09 PM
Yeah. Kilgrave, though.... I never wanted a character to die so badly

XD
Yup
@HeatherBrown but that really drives the story
Also caught up with the DC TV shows

user139252
Yeah, I can't wait to see who takes his place in season 2

user139252
It will be hard to find a villain as good as him

@HeatherBrown and he's not a "stength" villan
his entire power is in being manipulative
yeah
kinda hard to match that
also tennant is a hell of an actor

user139252
What user is sshd supposed to run under?

4:14 PM
er

@HeatherBrown a deamon? "root' I'd expect

geek@journeymanweb:~$ ps aux | grep sshd
root 1243 0.0 0.0 61372 804 ? Ss Oct06 0:14 /usr/sbin/sshd -D
root 27332 0.2 0.1 105652 6652 ? Ss 00:16 0:00 sshd: geek [priv]
geek 27412 0.0 0.1 105652 4444 ? S 00:16 0:00 sshd: geek@pts/0

user139252
I've got a process of sshd running under root, taking about 11℅ cpu...

@JourneymanGeek you took your time there >:-D

user139252
4:16 PM
Alright. I'm not used to it showing up in top

@HeatherBrown ehm I am. when it is used :+

user139252
Any ideas why it would be using more cpu than usual?

you are being hacked >:D

@Rinzwind jumped onto my webserver VM since its the only ubuntu box I have

@JourneymanGeek lol.
poor server :P

4:17 PM
and it uses my old password
@Rinzwind web hosting's easier/better on ubuntu
but the main system's fedora

user139252
It's using more than Apache... My load average is still below 0.05 so I shouldn't be too concerned

@HeatherBrown depends on what you're doing I suppose and what the machine is
working out what exactly its doing would be a pain tho

@HeatherBrown any zombies in "top"?

@A.B. Writing kind of blindly at the moment. It might take a day to answer, since I only have my tablet and occasionally a laptop (with no second screen) to try things out (still not at home) :)

user139252
4:34 PM
@Rinzwind no zombies

user136984
4:46 PM
What is this guy on about?

user136984
Also, can we have delete votes on this answer please. :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: Yeah, but there isn't really an answer which I can accept yet because non of them fully answer my question or fully work, and some of them... Well... Are just odd like the one above... :P

@ParanoidPanda Maybe there will come in some new answers and someone else has a better solution for you. :)

user136984
@cl-netbox: In VirtualBox, I have Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 installed, do you know if there is any way of switching to another TTY in VirtualBox because you usual keyboard shortcut commands are doing it for my host rather than guest? :)

5:01 PM
@ParanoidPanda nope.

@ParanoidPanda No sorry - I have no idea how to do this.

you need to press control alt f1 inside the vbox

user136984
@Rinzwind: Nope, not working... That just gets me to the Activities Overview... :(

Please can anyone name any package for RHEL7/CentOS7 that is in the repoforge repo? I don't have CentOS to actually try it.

5:34 PM
Ok, np. Found it is dead

@JacobVlijm ok =)
@JacobVlijm I forgot to mention, it's possible to use the mouse and the pen independent?

Q: Could a moderator actually delete a post permanently?

Paranoid PandaI was wondering, because now that I have more than 10k rep, I am able to see deleted questions and answers, which shows that even if you a post, it is not really gone, just invisible for most and you can't really interact with it. And I can see that this is a good thing in most cases, for instan...

hello @A.B

user136984
Is there any way to search for posts which were asked and answered by certain people?

@ParanoidPanda I will talk to you.

Q: There should be an "edit title" button as well as a "edit tags" button

Paranoid PandaI have recently reached 10k, and thus have unlocked the feature which allows me to edit tags with the "edit tags" button rather than the main edit functionality. And this is a very useful thing, but another thing which would also be rather useful I is if next to the title there was a button calle...

see above ^ i'm sure this is seen as pretty standard of processing file and stuff in script
But the book, I'm ready confuses me, it say its order to done for "..its only puprose is to command returns status value $?."
like if [ $? -eq 0 ]
it can be done without this "ls "$1" 2>/dev/null | grep "$1" 2>/dev/null 1>&2"
@ParanoidPanda does it make sense?

user136984
Hmm... I shouldn't have said I was at home... :P

@ParanoidPanda :)
is it that hard?

@ParanoidPanda You are not at home ... you are in the forest ... together with your panda friends ! :D

user136984
6:32 PM
Sorry, I'm just stuffing my face with food so I can't really think about code right now... :P

user136984
@cl-netbox: Yeah, I'm in the Bamboo forest! :D

@ParanoidPanda Nothing to be sorry ... pandas need much food to grow up properly, so that they can stand the fight against coding monsters ! :D

user136984
:D

@A.B. oh, crap, of course! It is relatively easy to lock up the mouse on one screen, but it will be for whatever input device you use... aargh, have to think.

@ParanoidPanda Yes, the search operator user:{userid}, for example your answers.
Or if you meant applying both "asked by" and "answered by" conditions at the same time, then you need a SEDE query.

user136984
6:45 PM
@NormalHuman: I need to search for questions of Pilot6 which I answered.

see you tomorrow - goodbye :)

@NathanOsman is there a way to simulate the power button with press simultaneously vol up and vol down on Android?

@A.B. Why do you want that?

@Zacharee1 I have an old Nexus S and the power button doesn't work

Let me take a look
I'm sure there's an app for that

@Zacharee1 =)
Currently I use adb shell input keyevent 26
:D

@HeatherBrown :D I'll tell him next time!

7:43 PM
Hey @Fabby =)
I need a smoke

@A.B. would you want to shake your device to turn it on and off?

There are still newbies on AU :-P

@Rinzwind ?
@A.B. There are two options I've found. Neither is exactly what you wanted, but they may be helpful

Not really :p

@Zacharee1 shake is good :)

yes you can >:-D

@A.B. lemme find it again ;P
Found it on my phone, so I can't give a GPlay link
Shake Screen On Off FREE by FREEBOOKS Editora

@Zacharee1 ok :)

or Shake to Lock/Unlock by Codificator
@A.B. What phone?

I got it

Q: Grey screen when using tightvnc and trying to run xfce4

booshislooseI have a amazon ec2 instance. I am attempting to run a dedicated arma 3 server on it. Part of this it to set up a repository on the server. The program I want to use requires a gui. This is the guide I used http://www.serverwatch.com/server-tutorials/setting-up-vnc-on-ubuntu-in-the-amazon-ec2-Pa...

user136984
@cat: Are you really a cat? :P

Is it just me or is Ubuntu(Unity) is looking more uglyer and outdated?

Just you.

user136984
@MathCubes: I agree, they need a redesign.

@Seth really? With Gnome moves more towards headerbars. That suck things like system-monitor to look really awkward in Unity. Also using old versions of software instead of using others like Nautilus instead of Nemo.
I switch to GNOME from Unity.

user136984
9:56 PM
@Fabby: What do you think of my new Q&A by the way? :)

I now use ARCH. But I am installing it in a VM why did they remove the overlay scrollbars that everyone like and love? Now they have what GNOME uses and it looks so ugly and out of place.
With the default theme that I don't know how to spell.
The theme still look nice when they redid it in 2012 I believe.
Does anyone else have anything to say?

user136984
@MathCubes: I don't use it with Unity any more, but when I did use Ubuntu with Unity I would have agreed with @Seth, I'm just used to GNOME now. ;)

user136984
Though I haven't noticed anything with the scrollbars... :P

user136984
Not that I've really noticed them at all actually... :D

@ParanoidPanda The menus also look old. Now with Plasma 5 and GNOME...

user136984
10:00 PM
Oh those scroll bars, no (well at least on Ubuntu GNOME) they look fine, actually better than before because in the past I couldn't actually get them to work most of the time but I think that was some bug somewhere with my hardware...

ok
When is Unity 8 overtake unity 7?

user136984
I think though that it was a big mistake to switch to Unity, I mean it probably looked better in those days, but now it's really behind, I suspect that one day they'll switch back to GNOME.

user136984
@MathCubes: Oh, I think that's in 16.04 (or it could be 16.10, but I think 16.04).

Ok
They still need to polish up Unity 8
I love Untiy when it first came out...

Either way @MathCubes, Unity will be replaced with Unity 8 very soon.

user136984
10:06 PM
I'm a GNOMIAC! I don't care about Unity unless it's getting better than GNOME (and it's not, just getting worse if it's actually going anywhere at all...)! :P

user136984
Anyway, goodnight! :)

GNOME Too. But Unity looked nicer back them, and fitted more back them with the menus, theme, ect...

cat
@ParanoidPanda Yes, of course I'm a cat, aren't you a panda?

@Seth you still use GNOME?

@MathCubes Hah no. Never used gnome for more than a day at a time. I cannot stand it.

cat
10:07 PM
@MathCubes >still

I meant Unity

cat
Do people actually use Unity?

Sorry.

cat
PFFT

oh, yes, yes I am. Unity is the most productive environment I've found. At least for me.

10:08 PM
@cat Yes, I used too

@cat yes, lots of people use Unity.

I still feel they still need to add Dodge windows back.

I'm sure you do.

I am still stock that Microsoft realize that Metro wasn't working... Yet to me and this is really stocking they are still trying to keep it alive.
In a different form
Is it stocking to anyone else?
Wow it still uses Gedit 3.10
Untiy it shelf still look nice.
How they did the trasparentcy.

I use Unity. I used to have lots of problems and not like it. But I guess I got used to it.
At present there is only one part of it that I specifically don't like and it's the auto hide of the scroll-bars. I can't imagine getting used to not being able to see at a glance of the 10's of screens that I have distributed between three monitory whether I'm looking at the full content of the window without constantly wiggling the mouse.

10:27 PM
Funny Untiy 8 isn't working inside of my VM.
Is it light dm?
Oh I ddidn't do "sudo unity8-lxc-setup

I've been fine with Unity, quite enjoy it
Never had any issues with it other than the one time it got reset when I installed the NVIDIA drivers

I understand what they're trying to do with Unity, but I still like my XFCE... and I'm waiting for LXQt to hit main LXDE

LXQT does look nice

Yes
Anyone know how I can get the Unity 8 next ISO?

10:36 PM
When I get my new laptop I'm planning on trying to put Arch with LXQt on my current laptop

I really want to try Unity 8!

Here is the current desktop next daily page right here
The old "desktop next" links don't work. Changed the naming structure to just desktop/daily.

Thanks

@RPiAwesomeness I've thought about playing with arch. I choose between LTS and right on edge though. So, nothing in the middle... and I like stable.

Yeah. I would keep Ubuntu on my main machine, but could use the old laptop as a testing grounds

10:47 PM
A lot of people like arch... and the documentation is amazing. I've referenced the arch docs for questions here.

It is ... but it kinda has to be >.>
Seriously, I have a really hard time with French questions

Yeah. It's sort of the linux version of "The Manual" for freeBSD

@hbdgaf I thought that was "Understanding Women - Volume 1".
Ducks.

Good thing @HeatherBrown isn't here

@NathanOsman Since you seem to be around-ish and it isn't Christmas anymore, can you give me a quick rundown on what it took for you to get 0 A.D. working w/ multiplayer?
My friend and I cannot get it to work. Either he can't connect to my server or I cannot connect to his. AFAICT we both have port forwarding set up properly..
and I disabled my firewall to test too.

11:59 PM
@Seth are you both using Ubuntu?
Are you forwarding UDP packets on port 20595?
