@fossfreedom I will do but it does seem that a slap is given (ban for seven days) then all is forgiven and back to normal :)

@DKBose people are often simply not aware of the concept that something can be both freely available on the net and not licensed for copying. A seven day ban seems fine to me, if the user keeps doing it that's another matter but these are often honest mistakes IMO.

5:18 PM
@terdon, IMO, there's a whole bunch of issues with this user. One is the time factor: an answer is provided without a couple of minutes of a question being posted. It can happen once; it can happen if you have the answer prepared and just waiting for a suitable question. But I prefer to think that a sockpuppet account is created so that 15+10 points accrue. If the question is asked and answered by same person, then upvoting would need more participation.
Also keep in mind that we're not talking about just "anybody" but someone with a trackrecord.

@DKBose fair enough. I was thinking of first time offenders

A: Stack Overflow is getting a place of its own

LauraThis is still happening. Though we've been quiet here on this thread, things have not been quiet at Stack Exchange. We've gotten a lot of the back end prep work finished, written a bunch of guidance to help ease the transition, and are about to start testing the process to make sure we don't brea...

I frankly don't know why this is allowed but to quote from the help center: "Reputation is a rough measurement of how much the community trusts you; it is earned by convincing your peers that you know what you’re talking about."

@DKBose What do you mean? Google-fu is valid knowledge. As long as you clearly state your sources, a lot of good answers come because you know how to search better than the OP. The time issue you mention and plagiarizing are big no-nos of course.

@terdon I don't see how rehashing blog contents a day after it's published "convinces your peers that you know what you're talking about". But if SE has just the criteria of being "useful" then I have no comment.
@terdon anyone who does research knows that plagiarizing has 50 shades of grey. And so any case in isolation may be given benefit of doubt.

5:25 PM
@DKBose It all depends on how it's done. For example, my answer here is 1) copied verbatim from the vbox docs and 2) copied verbatim from my answer to a similar question on Super User. So, in this case, I was just better at searching than the OP. That's still a valid and useful answer.

@terdon i know Google-fu is good work. I do it as well. But to google and to compose formatted answer in two minutes! Not just once but several times?

@DKBose no no, that's is certainly fishy!
I am talking about honest cases of copying content, that's all. The issue you raise does indeed sound like a sock puppet

@terdon which is my point. Then a seven day ban and they're back.

Actually, if they continue there are harsher measures. Repeat offenders are banned for life and their accounts disabled. This actually happens quite often.

@DKBose If you suspect about somebody, flag their answer or use the contact us link and explain your case and reasons
discussing with @terdon won't solve anything
:P

5:28 PM
@terdon I could put up a strong case but it would take time. @Braiam you must be knowing who I'm talking about but you are silent otherwise. Working on tags ;)

@DKBose in case it's not clear, I completely agree that what you describe is abusive behavior. All I'm saying is that copying content from other sources is not necessarily bad.

@Braiam also the flag format doesn't allow enough space so I can't give more than one link at a time and so people (mods) think I'm just going on about one thing when there's a repeated pattern.

is anyone here a moderator

@Braiam that's why I asked if there's a script. Gilles provided one but I'm too noobie to know how it works.
@terdon we both agree that copy per se is not wrong. It's the context that concerns me and should concern SE because rep is important.

Oli
@HarrisRubin I'm about to hop in the shower but what's the problem? I'll help when I'm back.

5:39 PM
Wow, gives a whole new meaning to the phrase: You dirty mod!

@Oli ok i am getting help in #askubuntu

Oli
@HarrisRubin We have an IRC channel?

@Oli freenode #askubuntu only 3 people

@Oli I sit in it to redirect people to the chat server

@Oli maroceppi a moderator is helping me with a question ban but can you tell me why i cant edit post for 7 days

6:04 PM
@Oli @MarcoCeppi how does upvoting questions help contribution
Too many of your edits were rejected, try again in 7 days.

Oli
@HarrisRubin That's because you're pushing weird formatting edits. What on earth was going on here and why would you expect it to pass muster?

@Oli well achu thought it was good
@Oli all i did was put that all in one paragraph

Oli
@HarrisRubin Look at the markdown comparison and the rendered output comparison. It makes it a single numbered list item. You do have some good edits (and some borderline too-minor rejects) but there are a couple of edits where it looks like logic went out the window.

6:20 PM
@Oli will you aprove the border line rejects

Oli
@HarrisRubin They're already rejected. I just mean some of them could have gone either way in review.

@Oli can i see a list of my aproves and rejects

Oli
You can see a list of everything you've suggested, askubuntu.com/users/64940/…

@Oli are my anserss good

Oli
I'm not sure if there's a breakdown for accepted/rejected/etc.

6:24 PM
Evening
Anyone knows how to add an Imgur account to Shutter? I've looked at askubuntu.com/questions/428828/… but the checkboxes marked there aren't editable.

@MadaraUchiha just go to preferences=>upload=> select the imgur entry and add your username and password

@terdon I can't change anything on that screen.
Where do these fields supposed to show up? Instead of the FTP section?

@MadaraUchiha have you selected the imgur service in the Upload section?
Also, what version of shutter are you using?

@terdon Yes.
0.90

Strange, I'm looking at it right now:
Ah, but on shutter 0.88.3 perhaps things are different in your version

6:32 PM
@terdon That's the exact same screen I'm seeing.

And yet you cannot type?

Where am I supposed to enter the credentials?
In the FTP section?

Umm, where it says username and password?

That's under "FTP" though, Imgur doesn't use FTP...

Leave everything else as is
@MadaraUchiha it probably does
For uploads anyway
Just try it and see

Oli
6:34 PM
bugs.launchpad.net/shutter/+bug/990921 Authenticated uploads don't seem to be supported.
The checkboxes are just a feature-table telling you what you can do with each service, hence their readonlyness.

@Oli but they're not, I can type a username and pass. Going to create an account and test.

Oli
@terdon Where? Under that section headered "File Transfer Protocol (FTP)"? That's for FTP upload. It's separate from the services above it.

@Oli so it is, I stand corrected. I thought that lets you specify the details for each upload service. @MadaraUchiha looks like it's not possible.

6:55 PM
@Oli can you remove the edit ban and for now on i will only make neccisary edits

@terdon it is ok

@terdon ... Where do I enter credentials for accounts which do allow for authorized uploading?

@Lucio thanks
@MadaraUchiha not sure, I was curious and am having a look at the source to see if I can implement this. shutter is just a perl script so it should be easy enough. I'll let you know.

7:16 PM
@MadaraUchiha OK, this is not as simple as I assumed because imgur requires you to register for this type of upload access. You would have to "register your app", then modify shutter to use your authentication token as well as your credentials to upload. You'd also need to use a specific URL. This is probably why it's not implemented. It is possible but requires some knowledge of Perl. Sorry, but I don't use this so I don't think I'll be looking into it more than this.

7:48 PM
What to do with edits like this one? meta.askubuntu.com/posts/1505/revisions
You need to switch to side by side markdown to know what the edit was

@Dan in that particular case, you should roll it back. The OP had used the correct, immutable form of the link and the edit inserted the one that depends on the question's title
@Dan scratch that, it was actually the other way around,, perfectly valid edit
It was the OP who had used the wrong link form

Q: Share Home Directory between Arch and Ubuntu

Jeroen BollenBefore I start asking my question, I would like you to know that I am aware of the "Different linux distros sharing the same /home folder?" question already asked on this website. It did not quite answer my question though, and as it's too broad I don't think it ever will. Is it possible to sha...

I'm so thinking about crafting an example code blob for this one: askubuntu.com/questions/431547/… similar to my code blob for this one: askubuntu.com/questions/155298/…

Q: How can I customize the Ubuntu boot up logo?

Roshan George I am making a custom distribution, and have a question about the Ubuntu Logo with 5 dots displayed when booting up. The Ubuntu-Logo-Script in the /lib/plymouth/themes/ubuntutext folder has the word Ubuntu and beneath that 5 progressing 'dots'. Is it possible to remove the progress bar dots, and ...

@Mateo thanks. added comment

@hbdgaf It's lengthy, I bet you could put something together that would be simpler - say take sequential images and time them, swap out the images and you have ready made code, just make the images
or even extract frames from a gif, that would be amazing.

it's irritating though. like write an app for me... which is a site that should exist.

@hbdgaf Bet people would buy a app that auto converts them ;)

i think it sort of does... it was called rentacoder, but yeah possibly.
@Mateo i know what you mean
why must straighttalk refill be so irritating...
o/ @psusi

10:09 PM
o/

@Mateo another app idea. you scratch off the back of your refill card, take a picture, and push the refill button. millions per year must be made on laziness i suppose.
@Mateo are you logged in to google out of band?

10:38 PM
@Lucio 7 I think. NetBeans 7.4

11:26 PM
@Braiam around?

?

Do you think this is a dupe of this?

Things we learned today: 1. #stackoverflow runs okay on 2 web servers 2. Lack of L1 cache can take out all but 2 of our web servers

The first one is obviously closed wrongly.

@Seth I voted for unclear...

11:29 PM
@Braiam good grief. The question has perfectly fine answers.
I'm talking about the other one.

@Seth I voted for unclear both...
and that it has answer doesn't mean that will solve shit...

triple facepalm

the one most likely is iuliux's but still
remember that I vote the questions, not the answers

this is silly.

@Seth everyone is entitled for their own opinion

11:33 PM
@Braiam Don't protect things unless they really need it please askubuntu.com/questions/432284/…
