Q: how do I remove a startup application from the command line?

In Xubuntu, how do I remove a startup application that was set in Menu –> Setting –> Settings Manager –> Sessions and Startup without using the GUI? My startup command breaks the gui, and I need to disable it using the command line.

I had to install from the alternative installer, and then install nvidia-current through apt before finishing the installation. And then i had to permanently add nomodeset to the boot options in grub.
