12:22 AM
Here's Raspbian ---^
I've got Chromium installed and running. 3D performance is pretty nice.

2 hours later…
ahoy all
just an fyi, i'm really impressed with the touchscreen on my asus working out of the box and having predictable behavior. thanks ubu dev team. i complain a lot, but i like to say thanks when i'm really impressed.
@RolandiXor your new gravatar looks a lot like the album cover for streetsweeper social club's one album

lol I have no clue what that is :P
You're seeing my Blender.SE avatar btw

i put in 2 questions for blender.se. i should probably put in another one to stand on my private beta invite status...

@CallmeV I see
@CallmeV you should :)

I'm thinking an IK solver - how type of question. I know they don't exist in ogre or bge, but they must for blender proper...

2:30 AM
It may need some more detail.

@RolandiXor i'll look for a way to explain what an ik solver is...is that what you're thinking?

Not necessarily, but more like how you want to use one in "in a Blender Render". It may be read as "not a real question" by some people.

how about now?

Blender can do IK so the answer would be a yes

yes, but...how. i know it's out of bounds in the game engine and in ogre. does the question make sense to you, or not so much
and i get real interwebs tomorrow AM \o/

2:40 AM
I think it would be better worded as "How do I use IK solvers in Blender"?
What ever result you can can be rendered.
@CallmeV \o/

feel free to edit away man. i'm not sure i see a large difference in the two statements, but if you think it helps

I got it now :D
re-read it

i feel trolled

no lol
the second question, I couldn't understand the last line at first but I got it now

i think a "here's a monochrome image, make a reasonable 2d model and extrude for me" would make a lot of sense

2:45 AM
I think so too

I also figured out how to get flash running in ice cream. Thinking about trying to pull the .so out of the apk and see if i can get some hackish workaround going on Ubuntu-ARM

@CallmeV I managed to get Flash running on ICS as well.

@NathanOsman Yes, yes it is.
I have a raspi, but I have yet to do anything bordering on useful with it.

I would love to do something like that.

I want to play with turning the arduino usb shield (device) in to a usb host shield for the teensy. I think that would be pretty epic.
Next question...if we have photos from near space with the raspi, how long before we have the first raspi powered hobbyist satellite
Also, I thought Rinzwind's rebuttal needed to be next to your observation...so I placed my stars accordingly.
I can think of a couple of interesting raspi projects for field technicians...if/when I have the time and inclination.
@NathanOsman Do you know if you get significant performance gains for using bcache? Like is it worth the time backing up and re-installing my new system to use the SSD as cache-ing or should I just write that off and use it as superfast storage

3:09 AM
How much RAM do you have?

6 G with 1 shared to Intel video (don't get me started on intel and shared ram)

I wouldn't worry about a cache then.

I follow and like your logic sir...
Have you tried out sublimetext?

Afraid not.

I'm liking it, but I'm getting some odd segfaults sometimes
anyway...moving on
askubuntu.com/posts/315656/revisions <-- wasn't sure how else to say that for the edit reason

3:31 AM
@jokerdino They weren't lies; I was back. But everyone else went AFK ._.
@CallmeV LOL. "One cannot simply" would've been better though! hahahahaha

Wait, Mochan was around and everyone went AFK? Is that even possible?!?!

you mean people went afk while there was a ... FEMALE ... !!!!

@Seth Apparently.
@CallmeV A female!? MOTHER OF GOD!

Sorry...some idiot on facebook is defending the dog-shooter and I'm having to make the other side of the case...

@CallmeV Why would some shoot a dog? Honestly. Go and smash~
LOL facebook, please just.. die. Or something.

3:42 AM
I get lots of useful communication with that as a bounce point. It's not my preferred method of discussion, but if you want to talk to ... a particular type of person ... you listen to it.

~(O_____O)~
A particular person, you say?
What are 'sticky edges'?

That's when you move your mouse to the edge of the screen and something happens.

@Seth Nothing is happening ._.

swipe in from the edge

Wait... maybe that's hot corners.

3:46 AM
what platform are you referring to?

13.04

and what are you trying to accomplish?

@CallmeV Banishing curiosity? IDEK.

i was mostly asking if you were trying to get ubu-touch swipes to work
i had a little erratic behaviour, but they mostly work.

Is it when you drag a window to the top of the screen and it maximizes or whatever?

3:48 AM
no, that's not what sticky edges are

@CallmeV I don't have touch. I don't have a nexus :S

so do i, and i have touch, ubuntu-arm, and android triple booting

wut

it's a proposed edit to the wiki and a couple of threads on xda that never got approved. multirom i how i did it

How did you even... do that? I tried to use VNC I think, but I don't think my tablet supports loop devices... yadda yadda yadda so I just gave up.
@CallmeV I shall inquire about this.

3:50 AM
install multirom
it's sex for your tablet

\o/ w00t
Yeah, I will. Does it have any prerequisites other than root?

you don't need root. just the unlocked boot-loader. my android install is stock, no supersu

Supersu = Supersuperuser? LOL

android app for rooted phones

But it's for the Nexus. //cries

3:52 AM
didn't you just say that's what you have?

4 mins ago, by Mochan
@CallmeV I don't have touch. I don't have a nexus :S

nevermind...that's what you said you don't have. signed comparison error/int wrap/something

LOL
BBS, I'm going to make some lunch (^_^)/
Back~

that was a speedy lunch
it must be sammiches

I haven't eaten it yet ^_^
I'm waiting for it to cook ~
@CallmeV Disappointed I'm not making sammiches? >:D

4:05 AM
no, you just beat me to complete on hotdogs, so i took a guess

I'm making chippies! It'll make my skin cry, but chips are yum ~ !

i have great skin. bad teeth, but great skin. not something i have to worry about ;)

I try to look after my skin. I think it's OK, but I still use about 4 skin products a day. IDK about my teeth.

Oh, my teeth are BAD...but I don't need skin products ever. I just have to avoid incredibly large amounts of peanut oil and I'm always fine.

Haha just peanut oil?

4:16 AM
I am determined to get xwayland working.

yep. olive oil is fine, many other oils are fine. peanut oil in sufficient quantity makes me break out
@NathanOsman i'll wait. i'll trust it later. like after other people have raged against it

@CallmeV Interesting 0_0 I only break out but nothing really triggers it, it just happens when it wants to .-.

But there's a twist on this.
I'm trying to get it working on the Raspberry Pi :)

@NathanOsman Wah! I'm jealous!

@NathanOsman good luck
@Mochan which is why i say i have good skin

4:18 AM

Night all.

Oli
@jrg Drifter? Yeah I've got my beady eye on that. Just my sort of thing. Only problem with it is it looks a bit 2D; everything's laid out in one plane, there's no up or down, which is a bit odd for space but does make things a bit more simple.

8:18 AM
Hi everyone need a bit of help
Im trying to use sendmail to send email in a shell script its like
echo "$Message_Success" | sendmail -f dunkin@email.com "$Recipients"
but Im not able to find out where to give the subject for the email
please help me

Oli
@Tarun Why sendmail? Why not mail?

this script has to go live on a server it has sendmail but not mailutils so I will have to use sendmail for it
I did echo "Subject:Status mail Message:$Message_Success" | sendmail -f dunkin@email.com "$Recipients"
now everyting goes in subject
:(

Oli
How about echo -e "Subject: testing\nBody"
(the -e is required to process the newline)

ok thanks let me try
Hey it worked :)
thanks alot Oli
:)
you saved me

Oli
8:34 AM
You need two returnlines after the headers and you should probably add a Content-Type: text/plain on the line after the subject

Sorry I didnt get you what your trying to say?

Oli
The echo should be like: echo -e "Subject: Status mail\nContent-Type: text/plain\n\nThis is the body"

ok thanks I will make sure I have defined it

Oli
The \n\n before the body is the important bit. Most mail clients won't interpret it correctly without it.

Ok that thing I didnt found out whereever I searched everywhere I just found mail is being used to send emails

Anyone having problems with the brightness being reset to 100 everytime restart ubuntu 12.04

2 hours later…
11:51 AM
@Mohit just use a logon script to set it unless you need it before lightdm. then just use a custom upstart tweak

12:18 PM
ahoy @Mitch

@CallmeV o/

12:38 PM
alright...i'm done with the lolcat/grumpycat for the day. got it out of my system
it's my caturday anyway... first of two days off back to back

@CallmeV I am a newbie to linux, i dn't get what you said about lightdm.

@Mohit do you need it before the login in screen or you don't really care as long as once you log in it's fine

Whenever i log in brightness is back to 100, Normally it should remain where it was set all the time.

i'm trying to give you a solution. if you want to file a bug and wait do that. if you want it to set to something when you log in, we can fix that.
does the distinction i'm making make sense to you?

@CallmeV Hey there. I managed to get 12.04 installed with the problematic GTX 580. :)

12:46 PM
Ya, fix that. Earlier i read an answer and changed one of my file in etc directory. next time i logged in it was complete dark :p

@ath88 awesome. did you post it as an answer on that question i sent you?

@CallmeV I did, yes.

@Mohit we won't change anything in etc. we're looking at login scripts to set brightness to say, 50% on login
@ath88 link?

Q: 12.10 unable to install or even run from Live CD with nVidia GTX 580

user99056I've used Ubuntu in the past (set up as web server, etc over in Iraq), so I'm not a 100% Linux Noob, however, I'm running into a brick wall here. @CallmeV ya that would be good. i normally set it to 50 %

12:47 PM
@ath88 upvote
@Mohit do you set it from the gui or the cli

cli

then just throw that in a bash script and add it to your logon

@CallmeV wait, i have some other bigger problems/doubts

i have a doubt is my first troll indicator. be careful

i didn't make any partitions while installing ubuntu

12:50 PM
@CallmeV Thanks man. I just hope it'll help someone.

I have a live usb of ubuntu 12.04
can i make partitions now

@ath88 theoretically you shouldn't have to use alternate though. you can drop to a command prompt on any installer. your answer might be more forward compatible if it didn't depend on alternate since alternate went away, much to my ... dislike ... recently
@Mohit different question and not at all related

@CallmeV sorry to change the question suddenly.
Is it possible to make partitions now.

@CallmeV I guess. But i had problems with the normal installer getting stuck on 'Configuring hardware..'. I have no idea if that is related to the GTX 580, or if its something else. And i suppose there will be an alternative installer for as long as the 12.04 LTS is supported, right?

@Mohit you could. if you want the same setup, you understand partitioning, and you just want to move a liveusb to an identical HD install, use the old BT installation tutorials. they use the tar piping thing to preserve partitions

12:54 PM
what is the thing about Using live usb of GParted to make partitions

@ath88 yes. i'm just thinking ahead. if the answer is good, it should live. while it has alternate dependencies, i can't bounty it and donate some rep because of that thinking.
@Mohit search the site

i read an answer where it is mentioned that we need a Ubuntu live usb. But its not clear that how to use gparted during boot

read another one.
let me enter that in the search box for you

do we need to burn gparted on the same usb

Q: How to create a partition in Gparted?

Ubisoft Terzuz Possible Duplicate: Resize partition with GParted How to install Windows 7 after Ubuntu and dual boot? seems like you'll need to resize stuff, so this closed as duplicate question should suit your needs. it was also the very first search result for gparted, liveusb
also, the reason your screen dimming settings aren't preserved is because you aren't using a real installation. you're using liveusb without persistence (or with and no logon script). so it's a you problem, not an ubuntu problem.
@ath88 - I bountied it with some specific requirements askubuntu.com/questions/203333/…

1:07 PM
@CallmeV Cool, that should bring some attention to the subject. Good thing i have some spare time at hand to look into it. :) You mentioned that it is possible to get a shell with the normal installer?

yes
same ctl-alt method as before. identical. the installer just uses a thin x11 instance to run the installer, so it's just like dropping to a command shell on alternate or on a full install by switching to another getty

@CallmeV I downloaded ubuntu 12.04 from official website and made a bootable usb from it.

@Mohit i'm done talking about it. live-usb is not the same as installed. read the gparted question, do a full install for dual boot, your problem will go away in all probability
if you do that, and it doesn't, come back and we'll work on it

I will leave it as it is, don't want to lose so much data.

and my second troll-dar ping just happened.

ABout the brighness thing, i just read this answer: askubuntu.com/questions/162317/screen-brightness-not-working/…

i can't see what you're typing. you're on ignore. i can only determine that you spoke because your position in the top right moved. when you finish an install ping someone to ping me, and they will.

@CallmeV Mohit: @ath88 askubuntu.com/questions/162317/screen-brightness-not-working/…, please forward it to Call me V

@ath88 thanks - @Mohit that doesn't say that you did a full install, that says you're complaining. please don't bother people with complaining.

@ath88 I fixed my brighness problem by adding start up program with command -xBacklight -set 65, it will be 65 whenever i login. I don't want to lose data. Ask him to remove me from ignore list.

@ath88 - thanks again. you've been awesome.
@Mohit - I just don't take to complaining well

@CallmeV I just hope you two figure it out. I understand the frustration from both ends, but i think i observe that Mohit probably should do a bit more in-depth reading. Just my 5 cents.

it's worked out, i'm just a little quick on the trigger
and he's not on ignore at the moment.

@CallmeV Thanks to both of you.

hi! There's a user James who is running from the Live CD, installing a bunch of software, then his Casper/Squasfs filesystem gets full (duh) and posting questions over and over again with the same symptoms. How do we deal with this? I VTC'd one now, but I think the other vague questions all come down to the same. Moreover, all he's trying to do isn't worth it - installing kernel modules in a live CD. askubuntu.com/questions/314936/…

@gertvdijk Coincidence. I am just looking at the user profile.
He seems to duplicate his questions.

"I am running from live cd, trying to install so i dont need the cd" <-- really does not make sense as an argument. Maybe he thinks that changes to the Live environment are copied into the installation?
Or maybe he thinks that by booting off the Live CD with Ubuntu installed on the hard drive he is installing things on the installation. But clearly, he is trying to install stuff to an installation he isn't in. It's a big mess.

5:17 PM
Yeah. It really is a mess.

i need to know how to make ubuntu save to the 100+ GB hard Drive, i never got the answer before. I have recently uninstalled and reinstalled and dont know how to use this large space, im getting no answers — James 5 mins ago

being a crappy service is fine, but don't lie to me. your install tech was supposed to be here today. it was marked as done, but i was supposed to get a piece of hardware. didn't happen. i get on the phone with support "must happen by friday 10am even though you already cocked it up once" evidently means, meh -- whatever.

@LuisAlvarado Awesome!
@LuisAlvarado Is that your newest record for longest answer?

@Seth I guess so. I was having a problem repeating myself many times for the same wine stuff. This way I, well, wow! save myself a lot of explaining.

@LuisAlvarado Can you please help on this if you have time?

Q: Ubuntu 13.04 on Dell Inspiron 1520 (WiFi not working)

Nick J.I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 that is rather finicky and had Windows XP installed on it. I recently installed Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail", and since, I haven't been able to get the WiFi to work. It has a Dell 1390 wlan mini card for WiFi. Any ideas are appreciated, I have spent hours searching ...

Oh, sorry.... Hello

graveyards aren't so bad. i worked them for a while when i was doing waffle house. just remember you could be serving waffles and eggs to some drunk for half your salary or less.

@Mitch Hi, sorry for the delay. For your answer I would ask the OP to tell you what lspci, lspci -vv or lshw -c network show, because depending on the 1520 model it has 2 or 3 different wireless cards. It has 2 intel and one broadcom. This will quickly help you narrow down which model the OP has and which method to use to install them. You can also guide them to my guide about askubuntu.com/questions/55868 in the case it has a broadcom and the model is convered there.

bigTreeI just tried to upgrade from ubuntu 12.10 to 13.04. The upgrade aborted because there were too many errors. I tried to look and it seems I have a problem with my dpkg... I ran apt-get update (which worked ok) but, after a apt-get upgrade I got the following error: dpkg: error processing ...

A: Moderators should be able to undelete comments

Jarrod DixonThis is now implemented. On a Question/Show page (not the mod dashboard), moderators can now quickly delete a comment without getting a prompt. After deletion, the standard "deleted content" styles will show the just-deleted comment, along with the "undelete" link. Also, the "X deleted comment...
