12:00 PM
@Rinzwind: :/
I once spent 12 hours straight migrating a wubi install to its own partition
and wubi's what got me on ubuntu. I for one will morn its passive and fall from grace

<-- never tried Wubi, did not see why I should.

@JourneymanGeek ha! I got you there: Ubuntu already owns you so no wubi needed >:D

@Takkat: its a bit like a relationship without commitment, you have a quick fling, with no commitment unless you like it enough to put a ring on it
;p

@JourneymanGeek Just use a 2nd blank hard disc and no harm done :=)
and nowadays we can virtualize

@Rinzwind: oh, thats totally why I have a bunch of smaller disks for just that
but this was back then!
when I had just had a bad experience with mandriva
and totally insecure in my skills

12:03 PM
@Rinzwind love it

hm, actually I had a short affair with suse ;p

I understood the "try ubuntu for an extended period without installing", but with all the virtualization solutions, why not just pack up an ova and a vbox installer?
And the daily funny:

@CallmeV: basically? I could tell if all my hardware worked
and just uninstall it

@JourneymanGeek how can you not do that with a live dvd?

@CallmeV: not as easy.

12:07 PM
@CallmeV Awesome. I have a cat like that.

point was, it was one of the things that got me running ubuntu, along with the freebie CDs
which they also killed off

@JourneymanGeek that proves Ubuntu got enough traction.

I think the freebie disks was to get loco groups started and now the disks are the responsibility of locos

@Rinzwind: yeah, it has.
lol
I wonder if my friend's UNR install's still running

12:19 PM
we got a new user called davmor2. He looks related to software center devving wgen I read his answer >:D

@Rinzwind No. He answered a Q back in 2011, so not really new.
lots o' comments as answers though.

yes. looks like works on software center. it's the only tag he's active in

most of his 46 rep comes from me >:X

would it be useful to have additional tags next to the username if they were from canonical or a dev?
hmm.
It's hard to tell when a dev is commenting on their own software. Found that out the hard way. sort of.

@maggotbrain: we suggested having tags/flare for official dev representitives a few times I think

12:33 PM
it would be alot of work...
the verification process and maintenance alone...

hm, could someone @ me ?
I need to test something

@Rinzwind They do it, somehow, over on reddit, no?

:¬)

marco !! How's Austria today?

Like this guy, here. He should get a danger sign next to his username. :-/

12:38 PM
yeah his profile tag is longer than my screen

12:57 PM
@Rinzwind how so? you can use launchpad as your AU login right?

if launchpad does openid

@CallmeV that would assume anyone on AU has an LP account would it not?

i didn't mean EVERYONE has to have an associated lp id. just it would be an easy way to verify who was associated with what packages etc
also, my last paycheck from the previous employment just got here. i'm SO thinking about a nexus 7

Ohhhh I got an answer for this one:

Q: How can I split a mp3 file?

Javier RiveraI have a big mp3 file, it comes from ripping a full cd. I would like to split it into one file per song. It will be great if it can split the file automatically, detecting the start and the end of each song. Extra background: I have tried mp3splt and audacity. The first one fails to autodetect ...

1. Take an axe;
2. Chop your hdd into pieces
3. done

@JourneymanGeek hi

1:03 PM
yup, same thud

also hi from me JourneymanGeek

@Rinzwind He should have a cue file if he has a file like this
then use that to split

he just needs to add the "insert 5 seconds of silence between tracks" if he legitimately owns the audio disc to begin with and use mp3splt

@CallmeV: orrrrr... rip it properly ;p

or enter track lengths, or anything else a rational person would do
@JourneymanGeek yes, lots of options. and lots of "i can't do that"

1:06 PM
I would not even bother... just download the cd :X

@Rinzwind: piracy is bad. Besides if you're going to do it, might as well get flac ;p

I have about 1000 cd's at home. I just re-downloaded them ... wtf would I spend time ripping them!?
@JourneymanGeek It is PERFECTLY LEGAL in Holland to download music
and besides that: as I said I did buy them ;-) well most >:)

@Rinzwind: XD. Bad, not illegal ;p

Oh :D :D
well I did not like the MJ reference >:D I am a Prince fan
sorry >:)

what MJ reference ._.
Oh, thats...
Bad

Q: How to remove rick roll script at terminal startup?

user148545I injected an sh script (https://github.com/jart/rickrollrc) using ./astley.sh inject evil for a joke but now when i need the terminal i have to wait and then lets me do commands. that is great.

answered :=)
he should have read the readme.
@JourneymanGeek far too difficult answer... it has a stop argument

Seriously? If you've astley-overdosed???

evil mode likely stops that from happening

lol
that rickroll got me to 200 O

I only upvoted through my tears.

Im trying to find a book which does a focus on issues that can cause a web server to not work or be slow, because I find myself having that issue often and finding nothing in the apache logs. So I read good reviews of "A practical guide to linux commands, editors, and shell programming". Will that book cover what to do when a server goes down and how to maintain a web server?

@JohnMerlino no. shell programming is something different. it will deal with command line but not with webservers. You need a book targetted for your webserver/
"apache cookbook" might be better (my.safaribooksonline.com/book/…)
chapter 11

1:43 PM
@JohnMerlino: google.com.sg/… I hate to point you at google, but thats a good start

(=perfomance) and 12 is debugging

1:59 PM
@Rinzwind Im looking to be able to create and maintain a web server on ubuntu server. So I want to be able to know the command to tell where to find directories on ubuntu, how to tell disc usage from command line, how to backup a web server on ubuntu, how to tell why an ip address on an ubuntu server is slow to respond or unresponsive, how to be able to have solid command of linux commands

that is not what you asked the 1st time ;-)
This 2nd one is what "A practical guide to linux commands, editors, and shell programming" will cover but it will not be webbrowser oriented ;)

2:16 PM
@JohnMerlino The Official Ubuntu Server Book is what you need
has everything you've asked about so far

thanks for that

@AmithKK Huh?

@mods this kid (last post here: askubuntu.com/questions/279781/…) is rude again... it's not the first time.

@Seth don't worry about JMitch... he's been rude several times over and accusing people (calling them mods) of all kinds of nonsense.
If he persists I'm going to suspend him.
You did nothing wrong.

2:32 PM
o/ @RolandiXor - I can't believe that particular problem/question is even a thing

@RolandiXor there's a pending merge to that question that would solve his problem

Isn't it merged yet?

nope

linky!

oh wait
it did get merged
Marco deleted his answer with the info I added

2:35 PM
@CallmeV: people get teed off over all sorts of silly things

@JorgeCastro i think he already knows the answer.

lol that does not sound if it is voluntary :X

2:38 PM
@JourneymanGeek nice!

nope, they arn't offering the modules I need to graduate
so I figured I'll apply to that company and see what happens

i put that email in the burner.

@jokerdino: I actually recommend contacting the guy, saying you're a student blah blah...

@JorgeCastro Oops, sorry about that! Didn't realize you edited it

@JorgeCastro >:)

2:39 PM

Q: command line equivalent for Ubuntu update manager

Xah LeeWhen I do sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade Sometimes the Ubuntu GUI Update Manager will still have some items left. e.g. “Complete Generic Linuux kernel”. I know there's also sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, but that touches other things. My question is, what's another command line option ...

that is the post in the screenshot.

Oh god he is still rickrolling himself >:X

jrg
@AmithKK learn the travis thyself.

3:18 PM

@RolandiXor I'm not worried.

Killed?

you nailed it.

3:32 PM
I don't understand.
Apparently I missed his explosion.
@jokerdino Are you talking about my comment?

And @jokerdino is still talking in riddles.

Good grief.
I don't have time for this.
I gotta run.
LOL. It got into the reopen queue: askubuntu.com/review/reopen/107014

World done even though hello can you do not have words?

I can randomly arrange words too >.<

@jokerdino Heh.

Q: is the lack of games availability the only thing stopping ubuntu from replacing windows?

Joe Coder GuyI recently lost my linux virginity, and now I feel like the 40 year old virgin. What is holding back linux (especially ubuntu) replacing windows? PePaFollowing https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/Headless I run into a snag at: u1sdtool --start It gives: X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication (Why X11?? This was supposed to be headless. The used u1sdtool is actually the wrapper in ~/bin/ )

Q: The on going problem with Linux software centre and driver downloads

JoshReally tags no allowed with out as called existing reputation? What bunk? Not a geek. unclear and confusing. The on going problem with Linux is there is not a straight forward "non geek" aka "non terminal" approach to making things like a Brother MFC-240C multifunction machine work. Work: mean...

Unless someone wants me to answer this. Because I can take him for a spin >:)

5:40 PM
If you have a problem with how a really reasonable site does things, check out MSO. Otherwise, don't post complaints as questions. What would happen if we allowed anyone to add tags? We would get a goatse tag, and a pr0nsite tag, and an i'm-a-retard tag, and.... I hope you get the point — Call me V 13 secs ago

Is the server kernel really still different from the desktop kernel? I thought that has been changed several releases ago.

I think it's just the scheduler?
Note: Since 12.04, there is no difference in kernel between Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server since linux-image-server is merged into linux-image-generic. If you are using an older version of Ubuntu Server, see explanation below:
