A: Review-beta: Obviously good answer in low-quality

Kevin MontroseYou caught me. We throw a few known cases into the queue* as "gotchas" to keep people from just nailing "Looks Good" or "Close" or whatever without reading the questions. If you see one of these just handle it normally, we're probably going to make them a little more... subtle over time. For n...

Hah! How clever.
@RolandTaylor thrice now
@msPeachy haha
behold.
17:03
Hello all @LordofTime
i have arrived
note: i'm on vacation, sitting on the balcony overlooking the beach with a drink in hand, so i'm not staying long.
@JorgeCastro so is the castrobot part of this tricky quality control system?
but were arrived before you
now I'm sleepy
17:06
@msPeachy 0_o
they got you too!
lol, I had an hour nap earlier, not sure why I'm sleepy this early
isn't it 1:07AM there?
yes it is, you Google?
lol no
I just check my time and move it forward by 12 hours
oh I see
17:10
You're from the the future
lol
guess you could say that
that makes you even more awesome :D
how-to-spy.com was linked in askubuntu.com/questions/14180/… and the site looks suspicious; what should I do?
@RolandTaylor but we're actually at the moment on the same time
The same user also posted Windows-specific instructions to detect keyloggers.
17:13
@ObsessiveFOSS hmmn I'm not sure
@ObsessiveFOSS flag it
@msPeachy lol we need to get you a TV show
huh? why?
@msPeachy Spam or other?
i'm not sure the poster grasps that it's askubuntu not askwindows. check his other answer. they both target microsoft products
The site just looks suspicious. It's a scam.
People: What flag reason am I to use?
17:17
@ObsessiveFOSS up to you, I'd choose other and specify your reason
I'm going to do a simple diff of the build directory after running configure for both the original and patched copies of gettext.
@RolandTaylor ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@msPeachy Don't visit the link! Suspicious Javascript!
@msPeachy hahaha 5 times!
@ObsessiveFOSS too late already did
17:19
sorry I didn't answer the why - I was afk
@msPeachy I hope you're on a Linux system now...
You need a TV show cause you're from the future - a time traveler
we'll call you Dr. Peachy
@ObsessiveFOSS I am on Oneiric
(and Dr. Who fans start rioting)
Still, worry.
17:20
@RolandTaylor Oh lol, and you'll be the episode writer?
@msPeachy ofc course :D
@ObsessiveFOSS why worry?
Possibly infected site...
Same user uses a suspicious shortlink... askubuntu.com/a/175625/54298
Oh i see
@ObsessiveFOSS flagged for spam
17:22
@RolandTaylor you write it first
I edited the link out
then we'll talk
lol
just need to check the revision history to see the link @mods
@msPeachy haha
can I put dino in it >:}?
BBT
Good Night
17:23
@RolandTaylor as my brother? sure
The adventures of Dr. Peachy and Joker Dino :D
@jrg A user has posted two links to suspicious keylogger sites, one has no mywot reputation, the other has a poor reputation.
@msPeachy LOL
@AmithKK good night :D
Good night @AmithKK
17:24
now, I'm not sure how my story line would work if he is your brother :>
he's too young to be my leading man
lol
okay okay I'm done :D
xD
man I'm wicked sometimes
done with what?
lol with my joking around.... at your expense
oh i thought you were doing something else

@JorgeCastro did it
jrg
jrg
those spam flags are useful.
@ObsessiveFOSS @jrg that user has been destroyed
What's with the recent spam?
jrg
jrg
17:29
@ObsessiveFOSS fossfreedom is on vacation, thus tricking the gold watch spammers into thinking they can come after us.
@ObsessiveFOSS we have a lot of users now - we're a prime target.
@jrg Ah.
it's just a company searching for "keyloggers" on google, seeing the top hits, and then target spamming
we actually get spam all the time, believe it or not
17:30
it's nbd
I've never seem so much...
Except Outlook and Yahoo Mail
there's like 2?
We get a handful each week
It's larger by an infinite factor.
@ObsessiveFOSS I think we just have more eyes now
17:33
Ah.
Sometimes I perceive a fluctuation in something, and people tell me they're not seeing it. I think it's luck of the draw and what jrg noted earlier
This wave of spam is certainly not as bad the one we had almost a year ago
We would had a wave of idiots spamming about gold watches and random generated junk
How did it get resolved? Hard work? r just a mass-ban?
jrg
jrg
we just braced ourselves and flagged like crazy. Eventually, SE started catching on.
yeah
brb
back - now afk - food
17:37
Sounds difficult...
if a post that was edited by me got deleted, do I lose rep point?
no, you still edited it. Just because it was later deleted doesn't mean you never worked on it
jrg
jrg
depends. if its within a week, yes, otherwise, no.
(i think)
I'm confused. Anyway, doesn't matter. Thank you!
jrg
jrg
(i might be mistaken though)
17:39
@RolandTaylor what do you have?
Do duplicates damage your account's good standing?
jrg
jrg
in what way?
Rep-wise, other than the downvotes manually added?
jrg
jrg
Nope
Also, what about migration/off-topic?
jrg
jrg
17:41
sorta and no.
What do you mean by "sorta"?
jrg
jrg
migration moves the rep to another site - so if we migrate to gardening for some reason, the rep you would have earned from that question gets added to your gardening account.
OK.
Thanks.
anyone has any idea how bootstrap works?
their docs, at best, give me no clue.
jrg
jrg
context?
twitter bootstrap?
17:44
yup.
context-- just had a conversation with a certain someone who asked me to check it out
@jrg ah.. other than that.. no good docs?
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh there are examples all over the place.
And by that, I mean right click on the docs site.
secleanup.com is back online, now with 80% less errors
If you're seeing API errors, your DNS sucks
@jrg ohkay. guess i need to be a bit more patient and read things before i ragecomplain.
anyone heard of zurg?
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh nah. it's fine.
@Mahesh I know of Zerg
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh Zurb foundation?
Zerg yes...
@Mahesh zurg no...
17:47
no ideaa what its spelled. sounds like zurg or zurb, must be a web dev framework.
and my query in question looks like a googlenope. :(
and someone said its awesome, actually someone i better consider.
@jrg yup, that looks like it. :D thanks.
jrg
jrg
Enjoy.
jrg
jrg
And I really need to clear out 1GB+ of disk space on this windows box. :(
17:50
@jrg Just shovel out the useless crap in C:\WINDOWS

and , um, i am totally messed up right now, but something pulls me to ruby. I'm a zeroer, so any pointers to start at?
my read it later list is growing...
@ObsessiveFOSS well said.
my windows side is full, but it's tiny(MW3 and RAGE are huge)
jrg
jrg
@ObsessiveFOSS I wish. Unfortunately, I need it for classes, specially teaching.
17:51
You are AWESOME @jrg
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh bows thank you
@jrg O.o
did I read teaching
jrg
jrg
Yeah. I'm teaching web development to people, so I need Windows. Since having them install (and learn) a completely different OS is out of the question for a one day class.
ohkay.
17:53
I'm waiting for the day when it would cease to be a 'cpompletely new OS'
@jrg It's good that you teach. As they say, those that can't do teach. :P
jrg

@MarcoCeppi @MarcoCeppi As the Linux maintainer for Hackety, No. It's broken.
Worked for me
jrg
jrg
Windows and Mac builds are fine, the Linux builds are evil.
17:54
As the Linux maintainer, you're not doing a very good job :)
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi how long ago? That last build I did is broken on anything except 11.10 32.
we're in the middle of a rewrite. :)
About three months ago
jrg
jrg
Interesting. Ok, yay.
@msPeachy cheese sandwhiches (or as we say here cheese cutters)
I'm going to give Hackty a try...
I have no ruby experience.
17:55
@jrg you hulked again? (for lack of a better way to put it)
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh IM ANGRY
There's also Code Academy
bah
save hulkie for something else. jus chill!!
@GeorgeEdison what about trying ifeq ("don't", "ever"); then \
just to see if it's not evaluating if false the way you want
Oh, good point.
jrg
jrg
17:56
@MarcoCeppi i thought that was only for javascript?
But that really isn't the reason for the compile errors.
I'm thinking my initial patch is somehow borked.
@jrg I thought they had ruby
but it's Python they added
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi looks like they have python.
@RolandTaylor was to make oats with milk but it's late and I might not be able to sleep if I eat.
17:57
@msPeachy oh :S
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh I recommend hackety (if you can get it to work), and then Learn Ruby the Hard Way. Both are excellent.
Are circumventions to bugs on-topic or are they off-topic like the bug itself?
I recommend learning a language usable by humans.
@RolandTaylor :P
Something like Perl.
jrg
jrg
17:59
@RolandTaylor like Ruby.
Everything bug related should be in a bug report, including work arounds @JohnSGruber

@RolandTaylor .... BOOOOO

@jrg :)
jrg
jrg
@JohnSGruber If it's bug related, put it in the bug report.
@jrg , and @MarcoCeppi cool, thanks.
18:00
@jrg Noted. :)
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh tryruby.org is also useful.
It's part of my curriculum.
suggest a way in which I can organise notes in a sane way, without going mad.
failruby.lol is also useful
(don't try to find it, it obviously doesn't exist)
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor Watch it smarty pants. One of these days you'll find yourself without a friend. ;)
@jrg :O
that would be the um...
I lost count... -th time
18:02
Man All Battle Stations, people were comparing interpreted language and nobody touted Python
5
At least nobody mentioned C# :P
(Not truly interpreted as it can be compiled to CLI assembly but yeah)
@aking1012 ready sir!
and python is one of those languages I like. The others being C and java. maybe its because thats all I know. :P
@RolandTaylor you can marshal pycs directly from memory too, that doesn't make it a compile-able language...
@Mahesh /me knows enough java to know he doesn't like java.
@aking1012 true
I gave up, I'll do the rest of the review tomorrow. Good night everyone.
18:06
it can be compiled to native code on Windows though IIRC
nigh night Roland
@msPeachy good night :D
have a good rest :)
Good evening people
@RolandTaylor yes it can. small difference to me though. you can static compile the python interpreter as an object and embed a string of the main python file, then marshal all the sub-modules as strings if you want. people just don't do it.
@unNaturhal evening
@aking1012 well that is very different
18:08
Could someone tell me if it's normal that Lubuntu has so much problem in transferring files/directories between two partitions? :/
@unNaturhal hi
@RolandTaylor accomplishes most of the same use goal i think, but i see how you could view it as a large difference
@aking1012 ?
My brain's processing is slow right now. :/
@unNaturhal i can't think of a case where "slow" is "normal", but i'm a tolerant kind of fellow that wants to know why it's doing it...not just be upset that it's doing it.
sounds like Psychonauts should break their engine and their game-data separately so the package download/install is fast and incremental game-data grabs could keep a 6 hour timeout from happening.

Q: Problems with Psychonauts and the Ubuntu Software Center?

sundry-somersetI decided to buy the Psychonauts PC game from the Ubuntu Software Center. Now, my laptop is practically empty, with only my OS and a few bits and bobs installed. The download for Psychonauts took about 6 hours, and I waited patiently for it to download the 4.4 GB. Now, however, it comes up with s...

Can you answer this? Switch workspaces individually on each monitor http://askubuntu.com/q/126100?atw=1 #multiplemonitors
18:15
@aking1012 that, deserves attention. upticked it.
@aking1012 Slow? Who said that is slow? I said that it has problems.. Transfers will stop after some hours with strange errors.. I tried to pass a Directory that in the original place was 11.7GB.. when the tranfer ends (without pass everything, but just an half), the directory was 20GB....
jrg
jrg
have you tried using rsync instead of the file manager?
@unNaturhal i took problem to mean slow not on disk size doubling. is one disk a lot larger than the other? if so disk/partition blocks could be larger, but it shouldn't exaggerate that far
@jrg I don't know what is it..
@aking1012 Are two partitions, one of 64GB, and another of about 200GB (both NTFS)
I have come to the (bizarre) conclusion that Mingw32 is somehow defining _WIN64.
...which is totally wrong and confusing.
18:20
@GeorgeEdison what?
like you stuffed an echo/touch line into a makefile
(P.S.: Nitroshare doesn't work.. when you try to pass larger files/directories, it will freeze..)
I'm gonna do some writing folks.
Cyas :D
@unNaturhal was built in like 2 weeks. i think he could charge for it if he wanted and people would pay. just saying
@aking1012 It was just a note, I won't criticize it
@aking1012 I'm going to try adding some junk code wrapped in an ifdef _WIN64 to see what happens.
18:23
ifdef _WIN64
  touch /tmp/ZOMG_THIS_IS_JACKED.txt

@jrg you still around? do you know the canoncial dist-upgrade question?
whats that word for following your activity with all extra useless unwanted attention?
aaarrrrggghhh... my mind is dead.

Q: How do I upgrade from 10.04 or 11.10 to 12.04?

i could swear there was a blanket when you can and can't leap....that

Interesting.

But... how... I don't even...
Weird. Just. Plain. Weird.
Congrats!
My hacking your Launchpad account has helped you!

@GeorgeEdison --^
@GeorgeEdison You mind using your supreme knowledge of The Force to get my PHP scripts to work?
19:22
I have to do something in a couple minutes.
But I'd love to help.
Maybe you could send me an email?
I keep getting recursion I never included with my objects, and every time I test my system to arm wrestle over IP, I win, which is highly unrealistic.
That was meant to be sarcasm, again.
LAMP should be re-invented as LAMD, just saying...
@GeorgeEdison Don't worry, I'll be fine. I don't want to trouble you, and I doubt anyone would willingly try to read my messy code.
I don't mind :P
@GeorgeEdison No need. On the subject f your wincross PPA, any plans to build for Oneiric?
19:26
I'm not 100% sure.
Is Mingw-w64 in Oneiric's archives?
I absolutely need a recent version of Mingw-w64 in order to build for a platform.
Let me take a look.
Yes, it's there.
jrg
jrg
19:40
@aking1012 I would be friends, but only if they were to also point out how I could improve.
@jrg That could work...
my instinctual response was "i try to be by biggest critic and my biggest fan. so it doesn't modify my world view what others think really."
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 i am also of that opinion, but I also try and keep an open mind when it comes to feedback.

no, just you

i just love being a spam filter

mlissnerI've been using Ubuntu for about five years now, and I still can't make it suspend when I want to. yeah, the suspend one is quite similar
thank you @jrg , I guess most of the other ones end up as "off-topic" or "too-localized"
just get a lot of "It could be anything! try this.... and post the output" for answers
doesn't look close enough for a dupe...

@jrg you've got a download link now too. the shell script in workspace/usr/bin should just work as long as you have python, pygi, and bash
