Q: Using Creative Sound Blaster on Ubuntu Server

emilykI just got a Creative Sound Blaster for playing audio wirelessly. I connected it to a virtual version of Ubuntu desktop and just had to go into the sound settings and switch it to the USB and the device worked. Now I am trying to get it to work on Ubuntu Server 10.04. I plugged it in and restarte...

hmm is it possible to show year in indicator-datetime? i tried and failed

jrg
@jokerdino yes

jrg
Or at least it was back on 11.10

it probably is. i just can't work it out.
hmm i think I found it
you going for the answer?

jrg

@jokerdino nah, you can do it. %Y is what you're looking for.

hmm yeah.
thanks for your kind heart :P

jrg
juju deploy mysql seems to be taking a long time...
scrap that, all deploys are.

haha. where is that dude that swore by juju?

jrg
Marco or Jorge?
All I know is that it's taking forever to do it, juju debug-log is showing nothing, and there is no network traffice other than what I'm doing elsewhere. :P

Both ;p. Not brave enough to ping them both.

jrg
1:29 PM
Might be that i'm using juju from the archives and not the ppa...

i never tried juju.. so.. :?
@jrg hmm i had to choose custom for timeformat but it generally works. thanks

jrg
@jokerdino cool.

btw, the sight of 2012 scares me. so, i reverted back to default.

jrg
haha
if the world ends the world ends. ;P
Sitting here, waiting for juju to do its thing is maddening.

let the world burn!
@jrg yeah worse than letting things compile huh?

jrg
1:42 PM
@jokerdino pretty close, except when things are compiling I can see stuff happening, juju deploy $service just sits there...
not moving, not doing anything.

oh i see the source of frustration.
rolling text are somewhat soothing. at least you know something's going on.

jrg
oh, finally something is going on.

yay!

jrg
that just took far too long.

hee :P

i don't see how error is an informative tag

@aking1012 Couldn't you just do $(basename $PWD)?

kind of
doesn't honour spaces...i don't know about other escaped characters
@MarcoCeppi ^

3:09 PM
@aking1012, thanks for the help. but it is always showing the directory where terminal started.
anwar@edubuntu-lenovo:anwar$cd /media/Main/
anwar@edubuntu-lenovo:anwar$

anwar@edubuntu-lenovo: Main$

okay, may be not a bunch. just one.

kill all comments... ... damn I'm guilty on commenting too much!

sometimes, a third person asks for troubleshooting.

very good point.
most comments don't add much value :/

@JorgeCastro: I submitted an application for review to MyApps (for the contest) 8 days ago. Are the applications going to be reviewed (for the software center) before the contest ends or after?

its been a tough time finding the correct answer to my query about increasing root partition size ,can anyone help me

Q: Partition resize

borax12I have a dual boot system with 1.C:drive with windows 227 GB 2.E: drive in windows 185 GB 3.Ext4 Ubuntu - 38 GB 4.Linux swap - 4 GB I want to decrease the space from E: drive from 185 GB to say about 160 GB and assign the 25 GB achieved from the resizing to the ext4 partition so that my ubu...

is it safe to decrease space from a data partition in windows and assign the unallocated space to the root partition of linux

i've done it, but i usually use windows tools to manipulate the windows partitions

6:13 PM
ah i see ,but yeah please help me out in this ....i want to increase the size of linux root partition
without causing any grub 2 boot problems
using gparted in live cd

I have done it many time in windows, and it works. I don't think Ubuntu should be any different, if not easier.

what he said should work...and you're not adding new partitions so grub won't realize any changes

i am not adding new partitions ,thats right on ,but i 'am' moving the root partition
and the warning says something about moving /boot

grub only cares about the disk and partition index, not the on disk location

ah so can i then safely move the root to the left and then increase the space on the right ?

6:16 PM
as far as i know
if something did go wrong, there are already answered questions on the site about re-installing grub from live media. either way you're covered

well what does that moving /boot thing mean anyway ?

You really not moving anything. If I understand you right, you want to take a chunk of one partition, and add it to another. Right?

yup
you got me spot on

it's probably a warning in case you're trying to move it to another disk

ohk ,..yeah i am basically removing space from my E: and adding the space to root partition of ubunut
:)
all in one same hard disk

6:19 PM
and not changing the index number of the partition. so should be fine

well dont know about the index number but definitely not doing anything other than a shrink ,move and expand ...thats all ....hope that keeps me covered

The answer that you were given, will get the job done. But with all thing that you do to a partition, there is a chance that something might go wrong, so its better to have a backup just incase.

ohk
ah .....thats sad.....its a 45 gigs of data that i will have to ccopy
:(
anyways ....thanks for helping out @Mitch and @aking1012 :)
thumbs up

np. you should be fine.

@aking1012 i hope so ,,,wish me luck :)

6:23 PM
You'll be OK.

arg, that app-devel tag is turning in to write my application for me

and did i mention ,the ubuntu community is the best out there :) and especially this askubuntu portal

greetings!

@borax12 thanks, we'll take that as a compliment

Hey all, I'm having issues connecting from my Mac OS X to a linux samba share.
My `/etc/samba/smb.conf` has the following configuration:

[home]
writable = yes
browsable = yes
guest ok = yes
read only = no
public = yes

Using the Mac finder window I attempt to map the smb share with:
smb://128.251.xxx.xxx
it then prompts me for my creds, to which I reply 'guest', it then asks me which share I want to connect to (i.e. homes, [or the other share on my box]), but then fails with the following after I select 'Homes':

this does not look on topic for Ask Ubuntu, I'd ask for someone to review: askubuntu.com/questions/158737/create-app-that-prints-out-bills

@LordofTime Greetings ....

@sadmicrowave you might want to ask that as a question on a Mac forum, or SuperUser

@LordofTime ok cool

that's just my personal opinion, though
eesh, i have 15 github repos o.O
some of them are O L D
PURGE TIME!

@LordofTime I agree that it's off-topic. It's not related to quickly/glade or any Ubuntu related piece I think. It's a general what programming language should I use to build this

6:27 PM
@LordofTime I gree as well

i've flagged that as offtopic :P

@borax12 let us know the outcome..

Hey, he was right about grub2: if it's not installed in mbr but in a partition, moving said part may f it up (core.img no longer at same phys location), requiring a LiveCD repair. That said, he should be safe :)

Yeah. I didn't think about that. Yet another argument for always installing grub to mbr

@izx Done.. Sorry

@jrg most of my code exists on secure storage, the public cruft i have there in code are just *******OLD*******

@LordofTime Meh, I just fork stuff, make two or three changes and then never submit merges.

@jrg hehe, you're similar to me
the only fork of something i have is of the proforma stuff
but i've private'd the repo xD

jrg
Sadface. no sharing?

some of them are... um... not for sharing :P
at least not yet

well, the audio quality is really bad, but the plots are good (so far)

@jrg and now you know why Hulu is not my favorite medium for watching things :P

jrg
@LordofTime well, i don't care that much, at least I'm not re-watching The Matrix and Star Wars again.

6:54 PM
@jrg the matrix is a good movie. star wars can go die.

when mounting to a linux share with NFS is there a way to force read/write access for everyone even if file/dir permissions on the linux box are set to: drwxr-xr-x ??
like, some option to set with the mount for using a super user's uid and gid ? or something to allow modify access to these types of directories?

@sadmicrowave I think there's a umask mount option
But the remote NFS needs to be setup to allow for anyone to read and write

@MarcoCeppi with nfs? thats just with cifs isn't it

@sadmicrowave not sure, hence why I think :)

@MarcoCeppi here is my /etc/exports line:
/home/lv_admin *(rw,all_squash,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000,insecure)
the lv_admin user on the linux box has root privileges with 1000 as the uid and gid
so I figured if I squashed all nfs access to an anonymous user and made that anon user have uid and gid 1000 then it would mimic the lv_admin user and all would be good....

(At a command line, run 'python' then 'help()' then 'modules')

yep

I'm wondering if you'd get it even when running off a LiveCD

Haven't tried that.

I might...

I've been getting it forever, I just use dir(something) not help

8:56 PM
It's not actually help that I want. I'm trying to write some python, and get the same messages
Ah I think I might know what's causing it

go ahead...

It's to do with gi.repository
(but this is only in my case, not in the general case)

probably...i've seen weird stuff with gi.repo
so evidently my laptop can't keep up with running a windows vm, playing video inside it, capturing and re-encoding at 1440*900, and capturing audio from a sink device separately all at the same time...runs fine for a couple minutes, but after about 15 things start going willy nilly

haha, time for a new laptop? ;)

i think it's related to the fact that i'm actively transcoding while recording and resources are already thin so stuff gets backed up and starts swapping (which is when i think it's going wooly)
also, nano does not handle a backgrounded process delayed quit notification (quit recieved signal [2]) gracefully
