While I'm not exactly panicking yet, I still have no way to get NitroShare working in Gnome 3.
The lone answer that my bounty solicited seems to suggest I need to write some kind of extension.
...and therefore I may have to accelerate my plans to incorporate a D-Bus API into the application.

12:51 AM
Heads off to install gnome-shell...

jrg

@JorgeCastro might be a good idea to document how to install to ~/bin as well... just a thought.

feel free to add that

jrg
Nevermind, i'm stupid.

Hello linux folk
I'm trying to remove a file from a read only system

jrg
Hello!

how do I beat it into submission

jrg
1:16 AM
you need to mount the filesystem as RW.

I'm afraid of what will happen when I remount usr as RW

jrg
wait, is usr a Read only, or do you just not have permissions?

on this machine usr is read only
usr/local is rw
/usr on /usr read only/setuid/nodevices/dev=900001 on Mon Jul  2 22:41:40 2012
/usr/ccs on /usr/ccs read/write/setuid/nodevices/dev=1690042 on Mon Jul  2 22:41:40 2012
/usr/local on /usr/local read/write/setuid/nodevices/dev=1690042 on Mon Jul  2 22:41:40 2012
I want to rm /usr/bin/node
Never mind
I just overwrite my path to give /usr/bin lower priority

jrg
guess thats one way of doing it.
(albeit thats the one I most often do. ;P)

Good morning
Can someone advice me, what to do with this guy. I removed the "please help .. ", but he introduced a new one "appriciate any help!" . Here is it

@izx agreed. and the error message is virtualbox or mac related, not ubuntu related (we don't have .app files)

Rather, it was when I ran the updates that it stopped working. I already tried the suggestions on the ubuntu sites ...

Anyway... I just discovered the "notification area" near the lower-right corner.

...and there lies the NitroShare icon!
So maybe things aren't so bad after all.

@AnwarShah You can wait all day, nitroshare doesn't work across WANs yet :p

6:37 AM
I just ranted last night. Don't buy Dell!

I am going to flag this as OT
Also giving a link to your post, in a comment @jokerdino.

That doesn't sound like a smart idea.. :/

izx
@jokerdino BT is totally Dell's proprietary el-cheapo adapter, not kernel; as for battery life, IDK, with cpufreq set up correctly I get roughly the same life on T520 between W7 and 12.04...
2

@izx I blew up my battery after a year.
@GeorgeEdison What am I supposed to do again??!

For what?

6:44 AM
To get the bounty for which you found the answer yourself.. :/

izx
Explain it in simplish to the masses...

Explain how Gnome 3 already does display tray icons in the lower-right corner.

izx
@jokerdino FWIW, Dell Latitudes (not Vostro) are still decent, but for the same price, on a good day, if you can pick up the equivalent Thinkpad X/T/W...why bother?

Yeah I think I'll get myself a Thinkpad in the future.

izx
I broke my screen once on a D600, same merry-go-round to get it fixed even at full-price; lesson learned, get accidental damage protection...
It is not like the laptop is totally useless after the screen was broken. I could still use a quarter of the screen albeit in inverted colours. Though the colour-bleached screen was very hard on my eyes. <---- gotta love the optimism! :P

6:51 AM

Q: Installing Ubuntu online on Windows Vista

Tathagato ChakrabortyI have Win Vista as operating system. My DVD Drive is not working. I want to replace the OS from Windows Vista to Ubuntu. Pla guide me by giving details of steps I have to follow

Hmm it doesn't feel right to get a bounty for something you didn't do :P
I'll still soldier on regardless.

izx
@jokerdino Consider it an educational exercise. Expanding a comment/blog link into a full answer, with-screenshots-and-all, is a valid answer, isn't it?

@izx Are we talking about Dell or GNOME 3 icons?

izx
7:00 AM
Whichever George will give you the bounty for...:P

So, you want me to expand further?

@jokerdino: You are now at 10k :)

I didn't know you posted already ... good job, and congrats! Keep up the flag-lust ;)

@GeorgeEdison Thanks George!!~
I am now obliged to translate NitroShare to Tamil xD

7:03 AM
@izx Yes I did...

izx
Well, it may work in Gnome, but does it work in AwesomeWM? <or insert your favorite "light" WM here> :P

I can check in KDE and LXDM
they should work.. probably.

izx
I was being sarcastic... :) (but that would be nice, if George hasn't checked already)

I wasn't checking earlier because I didn't have it installed.
And I didn't find much use for Nitroshare since the network blocks any and every traffic between machines.
But at least I can test my own translations in the future.
and on and on I went...
@izx you got your share.. kinda
Thank you! That saves me a lot of time and effort. I honestly never noticed those icons near the bottom. — George Edison 8 mins ago
Not sure what I should say.. lol

It did save me some effort.

7:12 AM
I could ask the guy fixing the icons into panel to make one for Nitroshare..

izx
@jokerdino I see...I was joking about that, I hope it was only because the subjects deserved it :)

well yes. I ofc read the answer before voting :)
i could have spent all my votes on your answers but I had to restrain myself :P

izx
heh
Can we get a spell-check built into Markdown? It would spare my eyes a lot of bleeding...

George can help us make a browser script..

I was thinking more along the lines of self-help than proofreading :)

ah, those.

Hey everyone :)

hey @VinitKumar

hi

hi @msPeachy

do you have a joke for me? lol

i uh.. hmm. joke for you? hmm I.. not sure.. :/
I blame @jasperloy for this.

7:44 AM
:) well, you're name is @jokerdino...

Yeah I got that joke...
The fact is that name is a joke. So yeah..

lol
this is my first time here, so I should be careful, right?

so anyway, what brought you here?

just curious, i finally had enough rep to talk here, so yeah I'm here...

Hah. it happened to me as well.
And I never left this room since then..

7:48 AM
From what I've read in the previous messages, seems to me that you're always here
This is my 3rd day on the ask ubuntu site.

Welcome to Ask Ubuntu site then. And welcome to the chat. I forgot to do that earlier.
@msPeachy Yeah I am totally here all day long.

Thank you!

user19161
@msPeachy Yes, strange things happen now and then in chat, so be careful.

hhh
How can I see which version this patch has here?

What strange things?

user19161
7:51 AM
@msPeachy I leave you to figure out...

user19161
@jokerdino Er what has this got to do with me?

Hey Jasper...

@JasperLoy Just felt like tagging you in.. :P

I came here when I got your ping.

7:53 AM
That was the whole point anyway. :P

user19161
@jokerdino Mysterious comment. You know I should be more careful of what I say. I have upset a number of people in chat in the last 18 months or so. :-)

hhh
I want to make sure I have this patch here, how can I do that?

@JasperLoy No surprises there. You know you are different from others.
More recently, you upset a lot of us by using a JB gravatar.
@hhh you need to apply a patch you mean?

hhh
@jokerdino Yes and I need to check whether I have already the newest version

@hhh lmc for you

7:57 AM
imc?

let me check. I'm a lazy overlord.

user19161
@jokerdino Haha, you are right that I am different, but maybe not in the way you think. My difference has got nothing to do with my avatars...

@JasperLoy You just proved my point.. Really
@hhh Bugs.debian.org is too confusing to follow. I give up.

user19161
@jokerdino Wait, are you telling me you know my deepest secrets?

I probably do.

user19161
8:03 AM
@jokerdino OK. And how did you know them. Hint please.

I learn psychology and black magic for a reason.
And then I found your linkedin profile.

user19161
@jokerdino Haha, I think you are just messing with me now. Anyway it's OK I don't really have top secrets. And some people already know some of them, but I don't think it is you.

Good Morning

If you don't have top secrets, how can some people know some of them?

user19161
@jokerdino Er, that guy is not me.

8:06 AM
He totally looks like you.

Exact Duplicate?

user19161
@jokerdino No, I think we look very different.

@JasperLoy I doubt so, but I take your point.

user19161
@jokerdino Seriously, if you think I look like that guy on that profile, you must have gotten the wrong guy. Now you are just trying to trick me into revealing my true identity I know. MWAHAHAHA!

Yeah I am very much after the wrong guy... :P
All I ever have to do is to get you comment on my blog and then I can track your ip. Mwahahaha Oops. secret leaked.

8:11 AM
can you guys help me with an hd0 out of disk error?
@jokerdino well if someone is behind a proxy, can you still track it?

user19161
@jokerdino Hey if you really wanna know me you can even ask for my email or mods already have it. But hey I am not that interesting really.

user19161
@jokerdino Oh what a secret that is!

@msPeachy I am not interested in proxy guys. They are boring.
@JasperLoy I take your word for it :P
@JasperLoy Pfft. go away already.

okay then, can you help me with an "error: hd0 out of disk"?

Looks too deep. @.@

user19161
8:15 AM
But anyway yeah you are not the first one to think I am that linkedin guy @joker.

user19161
@msPeachy How about posting on the main site?

@JasperLoy And then..
@JasperLoy It's already there.

izx
Who is Jasper Loy and why is @jokerdino stalking him?

user19161
@izx I am a nobody in this world, don't worry about it.

@izx Would you believe me if I said he is one of those Beliebers?

izx
8:18 AM
@jokerdino: location, Singapore. age, 30. email firstname.lastname@gmail.com . Happy? :P
I only lebieve in Justin Bieber

@izx feeds the email to spammers.

user19161
@izx Haha, I see you have been stalking me too!

@izx yeeeh

izx
one itty-bitty google search is not stalking

phew. I am safe.
hehehe, I found it as well.

izx
8:21 AM
So is Jasper your maths teacher or something? :/

@izx Luckily no.

izx
Must be your English teacher then :P

Hmm no as well.
My English teachers are Indians by origin.

izx
or is he just one of those poor souls from English.SE you like haranguing?

So, they won't sign up for Chinese Beta.

user19161
8:22 AM
Now I am thinking if izx is someone I know...

@jokerdino I did. Here's the link, #link askubuntu.com/questions/158187/…

@izx He wants us to invade the English.SE chat room.

user19161
@jokerdino That's true I am a Belieber.

@msPeachy Yeah I found the link.

izx
Sorry, can't right now...besides, English.SE is growing on me, it's a nice break from the torrent of poor English and poor Tech that is often AU these days ;)

8:24 AM
yes i know...:)

@roaring It is not a poor guide to correct usage, but merely another variant. I can speak in an American, British, Indian or Singapore accent all in the same sentence. — Jasper Loy Jun 9 at 15:45
Hmm
What the heck, you are just about 40 KM away from me max.

user19161
By the way @joker my avatars sometimes make people misunderstand me...

Jasper: can you proofread this question for us? It's been perplexing AU's top posters...

Q: Why can't I move a shirt in Chromium to another place in the window?

New Chromium window is appeared. Chromium version: 18.0.1025...

@JasperLoy I am just playing along..

user19161
@izx Sure, but what has that got to do with perplexing computer experts?

user19161
8:27 AM
Oh now I get it, the question is incomprehensible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

izx
@JasperLoy Those among us who speak English are certainly lost... now if the question was in code...easy-peasy!

user19161
@izx Er, and you think I am not lost?

user19161
Does shirt mean tab?

izx
You're the language expert...you tell me!
Is this some archaic use of tab? (or shirt?)
Middle English?
High German?

user19161
@izx No, first of all, rep does not mean you are an expert. And secondly, I am not a language expert.

izx
8:29 AM
Fine, rexpert then ;)

thank you for voting up my question

user19161
@izx I can guess the meaning of the OP at most, I will edit it now...

izx
Much appreciated...

@msPeachy Welcome.

izx
Although, as an admitted multi-linguist, I was hoping you could pin down what "shirt" meant within a given confidence interval...

user19161
8:37 AM
I submitted the edit guys.

user19161
Someone with superpowers can approve it.

Approve the edit and then check the edit.

user19161
@jokerdino Yeah you guys can re-edit if necessary.

I think OP probably meant what I wrote.

Yep that's right. Thanks for the edit.

I've just reaslised that I installed Ubuntu i386 instead of amd64.. I have 8GB RAM
will I still be able to address the RAM above 3-4GB?

pae kernel would

system monitor tells me I have used 800MB or 7.4GB

user19161
@msPeachy Now you sound like an expert.

user19161
@stueng Hmm, anyway it does not take that long to reinstall the 64-bit version if you want.

@stueng: ya, sounds like you can address that memory
hello people

8:53 AM
@JasperLoy I'm not an expert, I've just been reading a lot of Ubuntu documentation...:)

though from what i heard PAE is a bit crap in terms of performance.

goes into a shelling now that all the experts are finally here.

user19161
Anyway I don't know about PAE, but between 32 and 64 go for 64 as long as you have 1GiB RAM.

user19161
The 4GiB RAM is really a myth.

@JasperLoy: These days, with anything reasonably modern, 64 bit is a better bet
I mean, who would build a system with less than 4 gigs these days anyway?

user19161
8:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I am on 64-bit Debian now btw.

user19161
Sorry guys, I am switiching to Debian from Ubuntu.

wrong room bro.

lol
@JasperLoy: still thinking about it

user19161
@jokerdino Thanks sis.

Reminds me of that awful spellchecker on Straight times two days ago.

user19161
8:56 AM
@JourneymanGeek About what?

switching over to debian

@JourneymanGeek Don't.

likes the fact that it gives you an option of a stripped down initrd

Switch over to Gentoo. Seriously.

lol
too much work

8:57 AM
Actually Arch might be a better option these days.

I don't want to recompile my kernel 3 times a day
2

user19161
Oh, and hey in case you guys were not here that day when I mentioned, backports are supposed to be pinned but that somehow does not work!

now the experts are talking

@JasperLoy backports are supposed to be enabled manually.

Basically once my new desktop is operational, i'll be reorganising my systems. Lots of reinstalls :)

8:58 AM
@msPeachy :P

@JasperLoy: prolly wasn't. Diablo III is eating too much of my time ;p

user19161
@jokerdino I mean in Ubuntu if you check them they are not supposed to be pulled in unless you manually do it. But hey guess what, sometimes they ar epulled in!

@msPeachy: Not an expert here. I just have the experience of blowing up things in new and wonderful ways.

wait what?

user19161
So don't even check the boxes if you don't intend to use them.

8:59 AM
... boxes?
