Q: Should question related to cinnamon desktop environment answered?

RaviOfficially ubuntu supports Unity, KDE, XFCE and LXDE desktop environment. So naturally we can answer relating to them in askubuntu. But I saw many peoples asking help on cinnamon desktop environment. Since cinnamon is created with Linux mint in mind (not ubuntu) so isn't the question is out of th...

@adempewolff yes, isn't that good?

serverfault.com/q/393124/122556, whew, that took awhile to write!
luckily the first half of my disk cloning finished while I wrote it

created an account just on time to upvote that ;)

@jokerdino haha, thanks!

@adempewolff lol that is nice.

Yay for combining python/gtk/threading all in one question...

Where should I be directing Debian questions?

UL I suppose

I took a safe bet and gave the OP choice between SU and UL. Hope no one minds.
Debian questions are off topic here. You might want to try Super User or Unix and Linux. — jokerdino 8 mins ago

heh...yeah

@jokerdino well that was a short run.... "This question violates multiple aspects of our FAQ: You are not a professional and ask a question regarding your home network and policy circumvention. – SvenW 19 mins ago"

aww

I disagree with every one of his assumptions, but if that is representative of the general attitude of the SF users towards newcomers, my question is probably doomed.

Q: chmod: What does the `+a` parameter mean?

k0pernikusI was following a tutorial and it told me to run sudo chmod +a "SOME_PARAMS" some/dir I was surprised to see that fail telling me chmod: invalid mode: `+a' So I wonder: What does the +a mode mean? How would I translate it into something Ubuntu understands? And I also like to know why it isn...

looks like your q is already downvoted.

yeah, I think its just him though so far
I responded to my comment with a defense and I haven't seen any moderator action yet so....

let's play the waiting game.

preceding the question with a link to askubuntu is probably what did me in

I would consider that a valid question, but that might not have helped.

the only area of the FAQ I think it could possibly be violating is "Licensing, legal advice, and circumvention of security or policy," But it's not actually illegal for foreigners to bypass the firewall as long as they don't share restricted material with Chinese nationals.

There could be a business case for tunnelling DNS for say...a journalist connecting to some home site as well.

or for example... ME. I wasn't making it up when I said that I have a client who needs Facebook integration with their Drupal Site, and I need to be developing this site locally in case I lose the connection to my server in the US.

@mateo_salta I think mine should be the main one, since it's about image editing in general. I have no idea of what Paint.net is...

i seem to recall an excellent AU question + answer about the different ways software can get packaged for Ubuntu ...but i'm having trouble finding it, does anybody just know off the top of your head...?
i think i found it, i think this is it: askubuntu.com/questions/16446/…

That seems more like and exact duplicate to me

i've encountered a situation where i need to report a bug against content on ubuntu.com; i think this might be addressed by an existing question (askubuntu.com/q/15077/22949), but i'm not sure so i've posted a new question (askubuntu.com/questions/143006/…)

7:34 PM
@EliahKagan Just a note, following on to the ubuntu-web project noted in the other question and looking at open bugs bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-website/+bug/883001 is for sure a content bug
I see your reference to not being a link thing, but I would think there would need to be someone with significant pull to get up with the Dell contact point and remedy the situation in a way other than just pulling the link.

This answer is literally cut/pasted from another question: askubuntu.com/a/142837/8844 . What's the best way to deal with this? Voting down, flagging, just commenting on it?

Commenting might be a good idea.
That gives the user a chance to defend himself.

Oh, forgot the original: askubuntu.com/a/69892/8844
It's exactly the same answer. I guess I can basically say that it's considered bad form to do this.

Fell free to flag it as well though.
It's probably a good idea to involve the moderators in this.

@GeorgeEdison thanks.
Hmm. I probably should have marked that question as a dupe in the first place, though.

I still can't believe that you get a notification for every Meta post.

@aking1012 really? The Establishment was going on about AU and SU on meta.so? sigh
@belacqua Howdy!
Dang, cleaning through 300 emails and 14 inboxes took me longer than I expected. Anyway, I'm back. ;P

9:40 PM
@jrg et al., if a user has a closed question, what are their UI options? Can they flag it to request re-opening versus some other way to note this ('reopen' button?)?

@belacqua they can drop a comment or flag it and explain to the mods the reason why it needs opening. Alternatively drop the Q into ubuntu regulators to get the reopen votes.

@aking1012 Thanks, I've edited my question to incorporate this information. If nobody else replies, I'll try reporting it against ubuntu-website (and then, when I see the triager/developer response on Launchpad, I'll be able to answer my own question, if you or others don't do so first).

Q: How to link to a post in chat, to be accessed outside chat?

Eliah KaganIn chat, there is an option to link my next chat message as a reply to this. But I do not see a way to get a hyperlink to the chat transcript, at a particular post. I know this is possible (that is, that it is possible to formulate such a link), because links like this appear in my StackExchange...

@jrg: Can Ruby be run as a CGI process?
(Correct me if I'm asking something that doesn't make sense.)

jrg
I don't see why it couldn't.

How is the Ruby binary invoked?
Something like:
ruby [some_file.rb]
Just curious - I want to eventually add support for running Ruby in JetHTTP.

jrg
This is what I found, it matches and doesn't seem to have changed. - deathwarrior.wordpress.com/2009/12/15/ruby-cgis

Lol.

If you have the best of Perl, you have an empty file.

:P

Hey, Perl is powerful. One of my favorite blogging platforms is done in Perl.

I'm joking of course.
I've used Perl myself on occasion.
