We need a "live" version of Bittorrent for streaming events :P

12:22 AM
It exists
Essentially all it does is set and honour chunk priority more extremely, like most clients do with files

12:59 AM
@rlemon - I feel a meme coming on

1:13 AM
@aking1012 That guys face looks a little bit like mine.
Not too much though, mind you.

I don't know if anyone is watching regulators, but this is an obvious dupe: askubuntu.com/questions/142279/…
@GeorgeEdison You make me laugh sir

@aking1012 Close vote awarded.

ty. it SCREAMED dupe to me

1:48 AM
@aking1012 you know, i heard if you were using Arabic, the launcher moved to the right.

idk if that's true or not, but it's possible
to be clear i wasn't saying you were being disingenuous. i was saying that i didn't know if that behaviour evidences for everyone

ah, i was reading the transcript

2:13 AM
Why do some people edit answers just to add "I use sparkleshare but it is too slow" and other assorted junk like that?

wait what?
sounds like spam to me.

I encounter it a lot, and it's so... stupid.
This time it was an anon edit, so I rejected it.

good call.

if it's unrelated to the question, maybe some people confuse editing questions with asking them
that seems strange i know, but on answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu, i've seen people wipe out the entire text of someone else's question and replace it with their own unrelated question (not knowing that this is bad)

@EliahKagan wow that is pretty bad. surely people can't look around how to ask a new question?

2:26 AM
Great answer: How to customize on screen notifications? http://askubuntu.com/questions/128474/how-to-customize-on-screen-notifications/128508?atw=1#128508 #notification

it is bad, but there's a wide range of skills people have coming in to Ubuntu, and some people are inexperienced (and even sometimes intimidated) by using a GUI and a web browser, so it's expected that some things that seem spammy or malicious are sometimes just mistakes

2:40 AM
Heck. we are being fooled.

Q: will bounty be given to the accepted answer?

virparaThere is a question which had bounty and it is given to the highest voted answer(as faq says) but any answer is not accepted yet. What if someone answers that question (may be after a long time) and it is got high voted than the one to which bounty is given and is accepted By OP. Now my questi...

that meta question seems like a duplicate of meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3137/…

i think the question is that: if a bounty is awarded and a new answer is better, will the new answer get the bounty.

3:09 AM
ah, i see

@RolandTaylor Wrote something in the 2buntu Google group for y'all to see.

@jokerdino cool
I was trying to sift through the core issue of a Firefox bug just now
seems it only happens in the PPA version

ah, the trunk build?

@jokerdino I edited that meta question for clarity. I think my edit is probably good but if anybody thinks i have not properly preserved the intent of the OP, please go ahead and revert (my feelings will not be hurt ;-).

looks fine.
> Suppose the OP even unaccepts the originally accepted answer and accepts this new answer.
That one seems to come out of nowhere..
is that your interpretation?

3:20 AM
yeah...the wording around there was a little unclear to me, about whether or not which answer is accepted changes in the hypothetical scenario
but the name of the question is "will bounty be given to the accepted answer?"
so i figured the meta OP probably wants to know what happens when the hypothetical OP changes the accepted answer to the newer one that didn't originally get the bounty but also has more upvotes

actually, well, it doesn't matter after all. the core part is, once bounty is awarded, you can't do anything about it.
0
A: Will bounty be given to the accepted answer?

jokerdinoOnce a bounty is awarded (or the bounty period has expired if the bounty has not been awarded), you can't remove the bounty from one answer and award it to another. What you can do, is to start another bounty and award it to the new answer as you see it fits.

has the askubuntu lens been released for precise?

I believe so.

no, but you can use it from the PPA.

...oh no wait.

3:28 AM
it is not in the repo yet.

That was Quantal.

Which repo is it in for Precise?

It is not in the repo, what do you mean?
If it were, it should be in the universe.

A: The unity ask-ubuntu lens is not available in my repository. I'm running 12.04

loklaanThe unity-lens-askubuntu package for Precise isn't available in the official Ubuntu repositories. Follow the installation guide in this answer from a similar question: For 12.04: You can install the Ask Ubuntu Unity Lens via a PPA sudo add-apt-repository ppa:askubuntu-tools/ppa sud...

3:31 AM
jokerdino, great I'll refer the Q I'm working on to that one. It's about the web site entry for askubuntu.
jokerdino, No it's the same one. I was reviewing the question in the review window and didn't see your answer. Sorry.

that's alright. you got your answer.

Back :D
My niece is over so we were spending time together :D
@jokerdino yes
P.S. Should I upgrade to Quantal yet?

@RolandTaylor alright, i was using nightly until recently.

Did you run into the same memory leak problem?

yeah, it keeps hanging my system.

3:39 AM
Same here
I'm going to look for an existing bug

I am using the stable version for now.

Apparently it works fine in the FTP version, but not the PPA version
Oh they don't use a bug tracker on launchpad :(

Q: Is Ask Ubuntu really about solving problems?

MujahidFor a new user, the freedom that Ubuntu affords is really liberating. However, the user soon finds himself or herself running into different kinds of problems - which is but natural for any new user. It is here that he or she comes to Ask Ubuntu. When he or she does that, this is what I have foun...

I answered him anyway.

A good answer. +1-ed it.

4:12 AM
Hello all
I have a question for you guys

4:32 AM
3. How is a new user to know if the problem he or she faces is a bug or a just a "problem"? If it is not a bug and the user is smart enough, surely he or she can find the solution even without Ask Ubuntu. And if it's a bug, he would receive a rebuke from Ask Ubuntu as if he has just committed a grave offence. — Mujahid 31 mins ago
Now he is just whining.

@jokerdino Aren't you in school or something?

no. actually yes.
i am in the boarding school, if that is what you are asking.

So, @GeorgeEdison You challenge python?
I think python is better at serial

When I used to edit Wikipedia a lot, there would be a lot of complaints of that kind. "This article is only understandable by PhDs, who would already know the material! Why did you write such a crappy article?!"
The complainers never seemed to realize there are a large spectrum of people, with various levels of knowledge of many kinds, who could find different parts of the material useful.

Q: Unable to install nVidia driver in kubuntu 12.04

RaviI am unable to install the nVidia driver on my Kubuntu 12.04 x64 bit. I attached the screenshot of the error message displayed. Here is the output of the jockey.log : 2012-05-26 10:52:55,400 DEBUG: NVidia(nvidia_current).enabled(): target_alt /usr/lib/nvidia-current/ld.so.conf current_alt /usr/...

7:23 AM
@ChanHoSuh Personally, I didn't respond to the meta post I think you're talking about. This is because the encouragement of using GUI solutions, screenshotting, and step by step answers is completely counter to what the OP is saying in the question. I would have taken the response in a direction of "questions with simple answers, get simple answers. if you ask a question that only gets answers you don't understand, then perhaps you're trying to do something a bit outside of your experience"

7:34 AM
you have a point there.
but let's say, if an user wants to disable logging, and we talk about how zeitgeist doesn't have that function, would that user understand? I am just taking a different stance.

you too have a point. zeitgeist does have that option in privacy settings by the way

yes i know. i am just using a hypothetical example.

personally i think in that particular case if the user dropped zeitgeist in the search bar for the site and read the top 3 voted questions and answers, it would become apparent what is being talked about

yes, i agree with that. users who are lost don't bother to help themselves and choose to stay lost.
(like how I am still failing to package that facebook-notifier)

;)
i tried to give you a start on it and a document that detailed most of the steps

hi @wisemonkey - welcome back. did you ever get your tutorial on the productivity server put together? i was interested

i notice i have been pampered by all those step-by-step instructions. I can't quite figure out how to proceed.
btw, have any idea why Gedit is opening a new tab?

maybe if you post a question on 'how do i package python in to a ppa? here's an example of one i'ld like to package' directions would show up
@jokerdino that's weird and i suspect it has something to do with the fact that you're running kde
when running kde i use kate

Yeah that is what I figured.
Kate, I think I purged that one.
Reinstalling that one.

It's a lightweight editor. Unless you're crazy strapped for disk space, there's no reason to do that

7:51 AM
I have a 20GB partition for Ubuntu. I try not to fill that up.
Anyway, time to package that beast.
hmm @aking1012 I am lost before I could make progress

"maybe if you post a question on 'how do i package python in to a ppa? here's an example of one i'ld like to package' directions would show up"

it seems like there are a couple of questions on that already.

@jokerdino it's one line after this
@jokerdino do you think there's a suitable dupe? i'll help you word the question differently or answer one of the others if it's applicable

that would be a possible
i'm thinking a question something like "how do i package a python app that relies on user specific edits to a file into a deb for ppa?" pretty sure that would differentiate it from other questions that are laying about

alright, alright. i'll ask the question. i need some guidance.

Q: How do I package a python app for ppa?

jokerdinoI am planning to package FBuntu into PPA for easier distribution. The nature of this app is that the user has to make specific edits to the auth.py file to make it work and hence I am stuck from proceeding any further. Any guidance on how to proceed with packaging this would be welcome.

sir you may proceed.

does it really not work since timeline?

ok the problem was my /media folder went missing. created one and problem fixed

@jokerdino awesome. i have no idea how you lost your /media folder though

neither do I. good that i can now focus on packaging.

:)
Here's the answer in progress
First, let me say that I respect you trying to package someone else's software for easier distribution.

So let's get started. The first thing I noticed when looking at it was that it required
importing auth.py. We need to change that, so let's make an auth.py that reads a local
configuration file.

INSERT

This whole thing is going to be easier if we can use some existing tools, so let's make a setup.py.

INSERT

The next thing I noticed is that it needed a directory structure to help with installing the .desktop file

@jokerdino you said you're trying to package this for gnome right? so using Gtk and a thin browser is ok for fixing auth right?

yeah that sounds awesome.

@aking1012 What?

9:07 AM
@aking1012 did you check out the setup.bash in that app?

yeah, that's where i'm getting the url from.

oh, cool.

if you're going to package it, you don't want to tell the user - "now copy paste this url into this file in a hidden directory"

Oh, cant you just use pythons file i/o to use a .conf file which is written onto by a post-install script with a curses app?

@aking1012 definitely not.

@jokerdino Cheers ;)

Hello @OliverSalzburg

aking, don't think i was slacking. i was looking at how mechanig was packaged.

9:35 AM
@AmithKK had gone for moms work... was that dns thing for me?

@jokerdino I didn't think you were slacking. I had to look at 5 or 6 packages to find the way I like to package python

@Ashu Yeah

@AmithKK i have already tried that.
thanks neways

@jokerdino I met with great skepticism on not using pypi, but full on software with icons and the like shouldn't be packaged that way

ah, so this is just for the python script?

9:40 AM
pypi is for packaging python modules(and it works well). but it again, requires the user to use pypi not apt-get

oh, i see the problem.

it also doesn't understand things like using ~/ and post-install stuff for icons etc

in other words, it is not meant for apps with icons. which you already said. Noted.
ah, sorry. over looked.
i am a little distracted.

I'm re-writing the auth.py to use a webkit browser and an "I approved" button instead of the copy paste request. It would be easier to just run the bash script, but I don't think it's proper

@aking1012 A thin-browser?

9:47 AM
thin browsers are cool, but they can have issues with scraping after javascript modifications
in this case, i only need the redirected to url, so it should be fine
see also, selenium is the bee's knees for pure awesome screen scraping

@aking1012 Why cant you use Facebook's Native Auth?

well you know, seems like i am not going to end up packaging fbuntu, but learn how to package apps. :)

@jokerdino that was directed at Amith, but yeah. I know what you mean. I'll finish it either way
sorry, I know a half dozen Amit's and only one Amith, so my brain is wired the other way

we all hate lazy fingers, don't we? :)

have i mentioned that I DESPISE gi.repository not supporting auto-complete in pydev?

Very much agreed. I don't see the point in fracturing communities up into little bits. Computer programming and computer science should all be on topic for Stack Overflow. General computer usage should all be on topic for Super User. We don't need Ask Ubuntu, Ask Different, Computer Science, Theoretical Computer Science, and all of the other duplicately-scoped sites. I think tags are perfectly adequate for keeping content separate and letting people find what they want. But the rest of the community strongly disagrees with me, apparently. — The Establishment 1 hour ago

@jokerdino I'm going to neglect to comment on that one. I return to my example superuser.com/questions/428365/… if AU is so horrible, why is an AU user answering questions where a comment flames AU???
I also doubt superuser would be featured in the Ubuntu installer since it's not a targeted site

@jokerdino someone else needs to weigh in on this too. i agree that fracturing a programming community may not be the best idea, but the commenter specifically notes number of questions. on AU, questions are progressing more rapidly than I think the OP understands. Q: Serial downvoting reversed

virparawhat is Serial downvoting reversed? I just got +14 Reputations from the event listeds as Serial downvoting reversed. What does that mean?

10:49 AM
@jokerdino I really disagree with such a statement and, quite frankly, it confuses me.
I've been active on programming forums that tried to cover everything. That splits up a community because it simply grows too large for anyone to feel comfortable in.
And having huge communities where everyone uses his/her tags to find the sub-part of the community they like...
That doesn't sound like a fun place :P

@OliverSalzburg I agree with this also, having larger numbers of smaller communities has its issues also. They both have negatives, but there are some great advantages to branching out when you reach SO size. I like knowing many of hte top users on my site by name, probably the top 10%.

11:39 AM
@aking1012 ok i'll add another comment.
@OliverSalzburg yes I disagree as well. Specially the part where he targets Ask ubuntu

@jokerdino Hehehe
I think AU is especially useful since it gives users who might venture into alternative OS a safe haven.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but as an Ubuntu user, I would feel my question is always on-topic here.

@OliverSalzburg I understand opposing splitting say, python into another SE site. If it generates 10k questions though, his argument immediately becomes a moot point. This makes the AU is useless argument a totally invalid argument

And finding quality community support can be frustrating. Especially in the FOSS world.
@aking1012 Yes. Splitting off languages would go too far for my taste as well.

@AmithKK yeah i am on it

Which is why I don't really agree with the "SO in Turkish" sites and similar.

yes. i called a user a troll. it was a convenient excuse

Hmm... I assume the person was being troll-ish.

hmm i wonder who flagged it.

Well, successful trolls are called trolls for a reason.

anyway, calling a troll a troll shouldn't warrant a ban.
@aking1012 is that why that chat message was deleted?

@jokerdino It should

11:56 AM
No.

@jokerdino It was a comment I guess...

"Linux Mint, Backtrack, and other Linux distributions (try our friends at Unix & Linux Stack Exchange).
Bug reports (How do I submit a bug?).
Issues with the next version of Ubuntu (Ubuntu+1) (More information about Alpha and Beta release issues).

@ChanHoSuh Shortly after that I tell him reporting a bug and googling is not the same as not posting a bug. I then, when he disagrees, tell him he's trolling and I'm ignoring him(at which point I get banned for a half hour)

"troll. stopping conversation and adding to ignore" or something like that.
