Not linking to the G+ post btw.
I could do without the flack.
Yay one client who "owed" me chose someone else. Another kick in the @$$.

I feel 12.04 is very difficult to use, totally different from 10.10.

@Tim Give it a day or two
I find it very efficient
If it's too much for you, you can install the Classic look again

@MarcoCeppi Speed Test? Nice :D
Hello all

@AmithKK not a speed test (per se), but instead it shows what the current rate of transfer is on the network interface

Well.. Can you give me some tips to make apache super fast?
(The WebServer, not the Bike)

Tuning depends on the machine it's running on

Oh
Like?

hardware, what it's serving, etc

4:17 AM
So, If its serving a simple php pastebin...
@MarcoCeppi Are there any optimizations that would help apache on any system?
@MarcoCeppi Did you know: Rajinikanth's son in law probably invoked the ban of all these torrent and pastebin sites

4:34 AM
@AmithKK but that cant be actually verified
Hi everyone!!!
@AmithKK It can actually be termed as a rumour

@Ashu Yeah
He is the one who directed and acted in "3"
Which is faster...
Unity 2D or XFCE

If piracy wants to happen it WILL!!!
@AmithKK XFCE IMO
An opinion on my question (below). Is is fit for AU?

Q: Commands required for sound debugging

AshuI would like to know the output of which commands should be posted when asking a question based on sound errors (no sound / crackling sound etc.)

4:55 AM
I like that question. We have a "how do I report a bug" question. I think we need canonical questions/answers for troubleshooting audio, wireless, boot, etc. I just don't think it will be easy to make/maintain them

Wow

?wow?

Q: No user page (no logout), Firefox 12 on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit

david6When I have cursor over user-ID, I do not get the 'user page' and therefore have no logout. (Same issue also for 'StackExchange' notifier, at upper right.) @aking1012 thanks for your opinion

5:18 AM
@Ashu Yes
We need a +50 bounty on that

I think a canonical answer for something that broad should be CW-ed

Exactly @aking1012... Hence the Bounty

Here's something to start with:
I community wiki-ed this answer, so feel free to edit it like a wiki page.

**Troubleshooting basic audio output:**

- Make sure it's not muted
- Make sure alsa sees it
- Make sure your volume settings aren't all the way down
- Make sure you don't have a jack-sense bug
- Make sure you're not selecting some other audio device
- video cards with audio devices for HDMI outs for example
- Make sure your front panel connectors are connected properly

**Troubleshooting HDMI audio output:**

@GevorgHindoyan Hi!
Thanks for the help!
I omitted a fact - I am trying to update the original question.
I am using virtual box.
I don't think it matters, I am using it in full-screen mode.
But I don't think I should omit it either.

what to do...
hm....
@ShashankSawant can you post screenshot?

5:30 AM
Sure... give me a minute...

done?
@ShashankSawant

Sorry for the delay.
I am updating the question.

The images will be there soon.

ok, will wait

5:37 AM
Done!

can you set the needed options?
i mean is it stays to click OK only? @ShashankSawant

I think I have been able to set the needed options. Yeah, not being able to click OK is perhaps the only issue.
But I think it's important.

did you try to use TAB

In future I might get stuck at similar problem where the configuration utility (for some other program maybe) may not save the options I choose.
Yeah I used TAB.

is it helps?

5:40 AM
I think that is what worked.
But it's like shooting in the dark.
I want a more reliable option.

one second, i will install kile

Wow!
Thanks! But are you sure you want to go for the effort?
The other issue is: you might not have Tex Live installed.

no i don;t have

(Now that I think of it - it might not be necessary).

@ShashankSawant why not try alt-space and see if you can resize from there?

Nopes alt-space doesn't work either.
Tried alt-f8 too.
The issue seems to be that the options are too many in number. It causes the size to exceed the screen limit.

oh, i think i know how to make it
@ShashankSawant

Please check ~/.config/kile direcrotry

Roger that!

5:48 AM
soory, don't know what is that
*sory

I don't have ~/.config/kile
I think I know what you are hinting at.

did you have ~/.config
yes

Yeah I have ~/.config

i am hiting on changeing settings via some file
ah

But there's no file representing kile.

5:50 AM
ok

Gotcha.... I will look in /usr

did you have .kile folder in your home?
yes

I have .kde...
But no kile.
Not even inside .kde.

on second
$HOME/.kde/share/config/kilerc
what is there?

Found the file. Reading it in Geany.

Thanks for the great help!
I am sure this will come in handy shortly.

@GevorgHindoyan @ShashankSawant the configuration window may not be scalable. If your screen geometry is too small you have no other choice than the Alt-mouse drag option already mentioned.

I have struggled many times trying to change program options through GUI.
@Takk

*Takkat

@Takkat Rogher that!

But you could consider this a s a bug of Kile, because we should be able to scale a configuration window to the screen geometry ;)

what you mean

just changing two letters from lower case to upper case is not substantial.

ok
but how can someone write Ubuntu with lowecase?
@jokerdino

Just that single edit does not merit an edit. You could have done other edits. Like forming a better edit, etc.

must i change -> to â–¸? @jokerdino

6:39 AM
perhaps you can. but that should not be the only edit.

ok, and must i change for example Edit -> Settings
to **Edit** â–¸ **Settings** @jokerdino

if you are editing other things in the post as well, then go ahead. but if you are just changing that arrow, then better don't

no and bolding for improved formatting

Bolding doesn't do any better.

and must i change for example
sudo apt-get install gedit
to Or click <a href="http://apt.ubuntu.com/p/gedit">this</a> to install

6:44 AM
leave the command as it is and add the link.

but is that edit?

it depends on the reviewer.
i would prefer if you could edit and improve the post as much as you can.

can you answer?
http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3253/how-to-make-link-open-in-new-tab

@GevorgHindoyan you can't and shouldn't

target has been depreciated in the latest HTML4 and HTML5 specs, for a reason. The fact that browsers still blindly support it is another issue in and of itself

so i must not use target attribute?

Apparently it's no longer depreciated in HTML5. Either way, it's not good UX to force an experience on a user

If someone has a problem with actions taken on the site, complaining about it in another Stack Exchange site room isn't how you take care of this. Especially if they're a moderator on another site. They know how to get in touch with us.

What's the proper thing to do when there is a potentially good question, but the user doesn't know how to get the required info to answer it, and also doesn't have the reputation for chat?
I'm getting tired of using comments as if they are a forum thread

You can invite to chat and grant explicit write permission to a 1 rep user

I'm referring to this question: askubuntu.com/questions/141981/…
really? how?
When I tried inviting it said the user had insufficient info
insufficient reputation*

you created a room or tried to invite here? you have to create a room

oh, okay. I was trying to use the "move to chat" feature presented when comments are becoming a two way conversation
So, create a room first, then invite.

uh, he needs a chat profile first

9:58 AM
oh, so then maybe it won't work afterall?
I could just suggest he create a thread at ubuntuforums, then once everything is sorted out edit the info into his answer

how about we upvote his q so he gets some rep?

haha, the questions aren't that good though... that's the problem :P
I just feel like it would be good to have a nice answer on how to find and disable buggy multimedia keys

well, then. i am off to finish reading some sherlock holmes.

I'm making vim, but it needs ncurses...

@aking1012 awesome thanks, I think he is in the US, so I'll have to wait for awhile to catch him awake..

There are a lot of packages when I do aptitude search ncurses...

libncurses5 - shared libraries for terminal handling
libncurses5-dbg - debugging/profiling libraries for ncurses
libncurses5-dev - developer's libraries for ncurses

guessing the first one will do it
might require the third as well, but I doubt it

probably right

@aking1012 kind of what I figured, most of the info I googled says it shouldn't be a problem but I'm still a little wary

askubuntu.com/a/68125/25798 can one of you +1 it. so that i can delete it DX XOXO

@adempewolff it can work, or it can turn out poorly. both are possible

if it was a linux OS on the disk I would just dd the individual partition and recreate the mbr with grub
but it's bloody windows
and I don't want to deal with remembering how to recreate the mbr with windows

acronis had a free version that just worked at one point

@aking1012 it looks like that link at least was a problem caused by an OEM partition. I know for a fact that there would be no such thing on this disk.

12:55 PM
the idea behind requesting the upvote is this:

if a post that has 3 upvotes and been on the site for six months is deleted, no rep loss. I am being a bit greedy and hoping to end up with a net gain of +10 than a net loss of 20. If you are considerate, please.. :)
thanks gentleman.

I'm just going to dd the whole thing. It's already going to take me forever to do this, I'm going to keep things as simple as possible and keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't come back to haunt me

if they're anything like similar disks you should be fine. i always buy the same disks(seagate of whatever size in lots of 10 or so)

hehe, not at all. one's an 80 GB Fujitsu, and ones a 120 GB WD, they are both 2.5 inches and SATA but other than that... even the RPM is different
anyone see anything fishy with this command? sudo dd if=/dev/sdc of="/media/TOSHIBA EXT/annashdd.img" bs=1M conv=noerror
I don't really like the space in the output path, but I'm not quite motivated enough to go change the mountpoint of the external hd

sudo dd if=/dev/sdc of=/media/TOSHIBA\ EXT/annashdd.img bs=1M conv=noerror

oh, `` is an escape character?
haha, looks like code tags remove it
"\ " is an escape character

1:11 PM
i wouldn't have used quotes. I haven't tried dd-ing to something with a space in it, but i would use a \ escape to tell it to be part of the filename instead of quotes

can a sudo dd create directories to put the file in if they don't exist?

i would think not

well their is always ctrl-c if it doesn't work. here goes nothing....

fuf this

@jokerdino probably to keep people from doing exactly what you are doing :P
cleaning up old posts to gain reputation that is

1:15 PM
Noo!
I am spring cleaning my posts. I wrote them when I was an Ask Ubuntu newbie. Just copy pasting stuff from the Internetz.

I can think of a lot of reasons why its not a bad idea to reward cleaning up old posts with rep but I imagine that's what their rationale was

@adempewolff actually, they do that in order to prevent people from rage quitting. not to prevent them from collecting rep.

@jokerdino oh, that makes sense too

it definitely does.
just that I finished editing and it won't let me submit it.

the only nice thing about having to transfer from an HDD on a USB sata interface to an image on another external drive is that I'm able to keep working without the seektimes for my normal activity getting all backed up

1:20 PM
I keep reading it as satan. Stupid me.

@jokerdino oh yeah, that is annoying. and because it's a wysiwyg editor you can't just copy it to a local file to keep the changes without losing the formatting

alright about both the things.
May 24 at 11:31, by adempewolff
sending browser traffic through an ssh tunnel to a server in a closet at my parent's house in the US is a cakewalk, but getting apache to send external traffic (and more importantly, dns requests) through that tunnel is a huge pain

yeah

So, it was you who said it earlier.
I thought I read it somewhere else. It did sound very familiar.

I still haven't really decided what I need to do about that problem
I have this question here askubuntu.com/questions/137175/…
but I'm beginning to think it might be easier to just move the LAMP server over to the other side of the SSH tunnel.

1:50 PM
well, there is a possibility.
i am thinking you might want to consult some of the folks at Server Fault. they might have some expertise regarding this.

That's not a bad idea, thanks, I might just do that!

good luck with that.
