@aking1012 I see htop.
yessir
jrg
jrg
Sweet.
Interestingly enough, my setup is now about the same. Its just got two separate CPUs and two separate HDDs.
running it through synergy?
jrg
jrg
I'm looking into that tonight, i just got my other primary machine back from the shop last night.
it def seems interesting, but no shared clipboard and no drag-and-drop makes me stay away
jrg
jrg
00:06
Really? Ew.
I think I might stay away then.
But I'll give it a go, it's still worth a shot
it's popular with some navy guys i know, and for cross-OS support it's unmatched
jrg
jrg
Cool.
you know any gimp ninjas?
jrg
jrg
nope, and i'm not one. not by a long shot
thought i'ld ask
jrg
jrg
00:12
Indeed, nothing wrong with asking.
anyone familiar with errors "gcc configure error: C compiler cannot create executables
"
i haven't seen it, but it sounds like permissions to me
jrg
jrg
Yeah, permissions is what my gut says
running it as su
@wisemonkey if you're still on about kolab, you could put in a packaging request...or talk to somebody that is trying to get their name out with several ppas
just ask for it, that's way better than waiting until someone gets irritated enough to shove it in a deb and say 'it works for me'
00:22
hehe
yea i can do that
but I think there is deb for kolabd already out there
but its not complete solution :-/
in what way? should it be filed as a bug?
ohh no so if u install kolab with openpkg, u get spamassassin, clamavsd and all supporting services in same package
while with kolabd.deb its only kolabd service
I will need to search what all services I need
horde
that's both the beauty and the pain of debian packaging...i'm more a fan of monolithic packaging and saying, if you don't like it build your own
jrg
jrg
Indeed. And that is why I routinely curse debian packaging. :p
amavisd, apache, clamav, imapd, kolab, openldap, openpkg, postfix, proftpd, sasl, spamassassin -- these r services
need to look list of packages like horde and etc
00:28
@jrg an avenue exists for pseudo-packages, but i'm too lazy to really dig in to this one while in my current situation
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 Oh, you mean like adobe-flash style packages?
lol frankly I don't much care about packaging if it just works :-/
i'm going to sit out the adobe part...all or nothing is fine with me though
jrg
jrg
Nope, synergy won't work.
it uh, decided not to play nice with my dns, so I don't like it. scowl
01:06
synergy was a good idea...it's just a really complex problem. i don't blame them per-say, i just think it could be implemented better
jrg
jrg
Yeah, it's a complicated problem. It's just that for me, a deal breaker is not playing nice with the internal house DNS.
it should def query local resolv or whatever to get info, i agree
AU is turning in to a tier 1 bug tracker/resolution framework <-- just my opinion
I have a system to recovery... I am feeling so lazy
P.S. @jrg pictures are on G+
jrg
jrg
Dang that THWACK is loud.
@RolandTaylor SO. CUTE.
anyone have any idea if a 0.x-1 package on launchpad ppa will be replaced with a later 0.x-1 package if it was submitted later? just trying to understand ppa package management
i know locally with dpkg -i it does
01:24
on centOS it was firewall blocking everything
ARRGHHHHHH
feel sooooooooooooooo stupid right now
jrg
jrg
@wisemonkey gotta love security. :)
@wisemonkey well then george had it right...
u bet :-/
i'm of the opinion you shouldn't need firewalls on end stations, you should disable services...maybe it's just me
yea better solution cause I never open ports on computers unless those r forwarded
but I don't understand security much myself
jrg
jrg
01:26
Well, for desktops its different. I enable firewalls for desktops/laptops because I tend to have a lot of services running just for my local machine, and I don't want people getting at them outside of that.
then they should run on 127.0.0.1 which is not routable at all
jrg
jrg
Can't do that, mainly because I'm too lazy to modify my homegrown stuff like that. :P
@aking1012 you can't have the same version number reused in a PPA, even if you delete the original 0.x-1
I feel like I should learn network security bit more but it will have to wait 1-2 years have other stuff to take care of :-/
@ajmitch that's what i needed to know, thx
jrg
jrg
01:29
@wisemonkey What you could do is pick up a copy of O'Reilly Media's IPTables 101, and read through that in a weekend. They teach a lot of related stuff in there iirc.
@ajmitch how does the regular repo do it? i've seen updates from -1 to -1 or whatever
@jrg just over a weekend?
sounds good for a project for next weekend -- this one is almost over :P
anyways brb guys gonna be testing this thing now so network will be switched on and off
jrg
jrg
@wisemonkey It's a small book. If you already have a solid understanding of just basic networking, then you should be able to slog through most of it in a weekend.
@jrg +1 to all oreilly cookbooks
you don't even WANT to see how huge my oreilly collection is - like it won't fit on an ISO
jrg
jrg
I wish I had enough time to read all their stuff. :(
01:33
@aking1012 - Safari makes that irrelivant :P
jrg
jrg
Dang, I'm not upgrading my VM anytime soon... it keeps freezing
@jrg thanks will try -- o'reilly iptables 101 -- now I'll remember
jrg
jrg
@wisemonkey It's something like that - it might be the pocket book, i don't remember the exact title.
and i unfortunately don't have it next to me
@wisemonkey it is puzzling that you got no route to host instead of connection refused
yup I got the idea
and @aking1012 even I thought with firewall I should get refusal
but got no connection instead
01:38
i guess the centos fw has something weird in there. if it got the address through dhcp the router should know about it, and you shouldn't get no route
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor How goes being an uncle?
it's swaggerous :D
ohh hey @RolandTaylor congrats for being uncle
01:40
@wisemonkey cool at least it's working
@wisemonkey same
@wisemonkey ty :D
yey though couldn't add user yet webadmin giving me some invalid syntax error :-/
jrg
jrg
Ew webmin. :p
webmin - gag
yea now gotta look into ldap troubleshooting :-/
01:47
i'm so happy marco said "foo on existing management tools"
i'm in agreement with him - they are complete vomit
Hey guys, sorry to interrupt,
I have a system that went down today after freezing and locking up completely
jrg
jrg
@RolandTaylor never apologize if you've got a good question.
I ended up killing it
but... now, it boots to busybox
jrg
jrg
ouch
What should I do to recover?
jrg
jrg
01:49
type exit
jrg
jrg
and 9 times out of 10, it will boot to grub
and then you can go from there
i've only seen busybox arrived at when it couldn't find a luks volume
hmm it shows grub first
I will start it now and try a thing
check your luks config, if you have one
01:50
trying to install a printer on windows is an exercise in frustration
why can't it be simple like linux?
@ajmitch it's also a stupid move :)
@RolandTaylor but necessary
lol I was teasing ;)
we don't always have choices what we implement. sometimes we have to implement a pile of
maybe it's because I'm using windows in a VM, but you'd think it'd be able to find a driver for a printer on the network :)
01:51
...windows
ubuntu can, why can't windows 7? :)
Oh that has never worked for me from windows
it's a bit fickle that way
@jrg I was wrong - it's initramfs that it boots to
then it if I type exit it panics :D
@ajmitch i've never, ever installed a printer without a driver disk or printmig
@RolandTaylor i've seen that from incorrect kernel params, but that's about it
I'm going to make a bootup drive and give it a disk check
P.S. The decision to go non-pae by default was a bad move.
@RolandTaylor why is it bad?
01:59
done :D yey now I've my own mail server
need to look for starting VMs on boot in case host is rebooted
Back guys. Using 32 bit ubuntu now
running sweet
and the most important part, it detected all cpus and memory see here ^^
told ya it works out of the box :)
@wisemonkey VBoxManage something is what you want for that in an rc file
ok now hereby I commence search for that :)
though kinda bored now
@wisemonkey thanks buddy. I was really in a hurry
02:04
yay, i found a free icon i can use royalty free :)
what about the webpage iconfinder?
@LuisAlvarado np at all :D @aking1012 gotta love the royalty free stuff :)
@LuisAlvarado would have been nice to know about that one a couple hours ago though, so ty
@ajmitch I have a Pentium M system, runs just fine - except I must use a custom iso for it
my brother has a similar system - fortunately he decided it's best to upgrade over the net
There are many others I sure who will run into the problem that the system won't boot unless they use a custom solution or upgrade from 11.10
02:10
@RolandTaylor you're probably right, but until i have a house full of hardware...i can only test what i bought. the weakness of crowd-sourcing problem solving
lol I made 64bit bootable flash drive by accident just now :D
back to square 1
jrg
jrg
@Roland Oh, exit on initramfs will totally work. Yup.
brb, think i have this whole thing sorted
Bounty offered: Can I sync with my iPhone 4 and iPad? http://askubuntu.com/questions/994/can-i-sync-with-my-iphone-4-and-ipad?atw=1 #sync
@MarcoCeppi do you think we should reword the top thing a bit more to make it more clear the site isn't about reporting bugs?
02:20
Sure
@JorgeCastro <3
@aking1012 lol I have been tempted to do that for 3 days now...
but I didn't want to be taken the wrong way...
3 is not greater than Jorge...
he's done it to me a couple times...so i don't feel it will be taken the wrong way
uh oh...
in my system recovery...
I get:
Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing code page or helper program, or other error
@MarcoCeppi ^^^ We need a better description there
@JorgeCastro what about:
argh, why oh why did the package maintainer for ffmpeg/avconv decide to compile without libx264? This is quite possibly one of the most portable codecs on the planet which subsequently renders html5 video support practically non existant with ffmpeg produced files now </rage>

@jrg problem: solved.
e2fsk, fixed a bunch of orphaned inodes - done.
A Harvard professor is pretty mad at Canonical.
0
A: I can't boot into a usable system anymore. What should I do?

Graeme HarrisonI'm a big supporter of Ubuntu.... BUT Canonical CANNOT continue to release 'upgrades' that trash existing dual-boot systems. I have 30+ years IT experience, and I too found that ugrading to v11 caused GRUB records to be trashed for a dual-boot system, and now two years later, I find that the same...

Wow my system even boots faster :D
@JacobJohanEdwards You'd think a professor of Harvard would know how to read an FAQ
2
@MarcoCeppi What's this, FAQ, you speak of? ;)
@RolandTaylor i'ld like to know this too
02:52
Funny thing is, I have yet to lose a dual boot setup to upgrading...
@aking1012 I heard some websites have them. It stands for "Frequently Answered Questions". Maybe we should consider investigating one of these for Ask Ubuntu.
I meant the harvard part
03:05
gosh the ppa process is tedious, no wonder nobody submits to ppa
@MarcoCeppi I was thinking more about the scope of the site and stuff. Let's make a new one at UDS
To anyone that followed that mini-rant - handbrake to the rescue. I was able to transcode into web-optimized format from the ppm based mp4 </end rage>
damn some more confusion -- I'm trying to send a mail from web client and I get failed to connect to localhost:587
I don't have port 587 open / working anywhere :-/
@lazyPower link plz, im in a ranty mood

argh, why oh why did the package maintainer for ffmpeg/avconv decide to compile without libx264? This is quite possibly one of the most portable codecs on the planet which subsequently renders html5 video support practically non existant with ffmpeg produced files now </rage>
03:18
completely understand...if it's anything like source change errors i don't blame him though. i redownloaded the orig.tar.gz a dozen times and still got different errors
i just had to rant about my ubuntu-pacakged tools because i'm a typical end user, and its easier to rage than it is to fix the problem. While i doff my hat to the maintainer - i had a momentary lapse of being a typical user.
i would fix things if there was a straightforward way of doing so
at this point it's easier to delete the repo altogether or just host it non ppa
<3 handbrake
that works for his problem, but not mine
the solution i found online was download your original orig.tar.gz and use that, but evidently timestamps on that file make launchpad barf
done....too tired of screwing about with ppa. i'll just host the debs on github
03:37
@aking1012 got five minutes? I'd like to get some prelim feedback on what i'm working with.
sure, bounce over to g+
no need - just clone it and open the index.html
its far from finished, we are getting fancy with the default template provided with impress.js
the intro slide is the best out of all of them so far
cool i'm a little too irritable right now to be horribly useful though
Fair enough :) i'll not poke the bear then.
it's bookmarked so i can look at it tomorrow when the pissed wears off though
03:43
Right on -- presentation is tomorrow but you should get a good grin out of it.
trying to entertain a class of about 40 with an overview of PM/etc in the life and times of a web developer.
@lazyPower sry i wasnt of more help then
04:02
check my git repo if you get a spare minute...you might find it amusing
I'll do that before i hit the sack :)
Kinda have to finish this -- otherwise i'm boned for my presentation tomorrow.
ahh the joys of being a procrastinator
04:22
Hello All
lenstoggle is done. it's on github
@aking1012 Hey :D
@aking1012 Link me :D
04:25
Sweet
there's a full binary deb there, but you can inspect it if you want
@aking1012 Is it on launchpad?
You should put it on a launchpad ppa
...
Can I do it
it was, but launchpad started giving me trouble and there was no decent documentation
04:26
@aking1012 You dont know @ThomasWard.. do you?
not directly no
we've talked a little, but nothing in depth
He's a Packaging maniac
He helped me package like one of the most hardest package
(Yes, talking about the xbmc one)
i have one very specific problem and none of the solutions seem to work...if it were documented somewhere i would put it on launchpad
i haven't found anyone on AU that does packaging, so i'm kind of stuck
anyway, do try out the deb and tell me what you think. you have to log out and log back in after you apply, for reasons i note in the readme
:( Unity 2D is not working here
I'm guessing a dist-upgrade would fix it
04:30
@aking1012 i totally forgot about evil phoenix, he is a package management guru. He kinda has it all on lockdown.
good suggestion @AmithKK
np @lazyPower :D
The following packages will be upgraded:
  abiword abiword-common abiword-plugin-grammar abiword-plugin-mathview
  accountsservice ace-of-penguins acpi-support acroread acroread-common
  activity-log-manager-common activity-log-manager-control-center aisleriot
  alsa-utils app-install-data app-install-data-partner apparmor appmenu-gtk
  appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt apport apport-gtk apt apt-transport-https apt-utils
  aptdaemon aptdaemon-data aptitude apturl apturl-common at-spi2-core
audacious audacious-plugins automake autotools-dev bamfdaemon banshee
facepalm
you're going to have to do it eventually
btw @lazyPower I have it fixed so it runs from usr/bin now
Right on
you still have to elevate priv's but thats solid. Good work man
yes, i could do dbus, but it's not worth it
if you're in sudoers as no prompt it's just plain magic
the prompt is desired effect
Hello Guys
04:35
hi
I faced big big problem after i installed 12.04 from CD.
After restarting i keep seeing this error message
@Achu Why are you network booting?
I'm on lenovo V570
and it doesn't allow me to change bios setting and installing another OS :(
it's that wired?
04:39
This is not a ubuntu problem
its a bios problem
Do a clr-cmos
@Achu Shift+F8 before the message comes up
okay, opened a question for the ppa problem @ThomasWard if you get a chance and you have an answer lmk plz: askubuntu.com/questions/128250/…
off to play mw3, i welcome suggestions on the project on github. just lmk what you think. send it to the email on the website and i'll get it
@aking1012 Want me to send him a msg?
i don't want to hassle him, but if he's got a solution i'm open to it
@AmithKK --^
@AmithKK shift+F8 doesn't work, it keeps logging and show me that error message.
like i don't want it packaged if there's a solution, i want to know HOW to do it
05:00
hey, my deleted repo transitioned to quantal???wth
@AmithKK any idea?

Q: Synaptic settings and Lubuntu 12.04

user18260I'm trying to permanently disable tapping and scrolling on my Synaptic touchpad. While I can do this with gpointing-device-settings, the settings are not kept. What file(s) do I need to edit to disable tapping and scrolling?

sorry what? -1 for no reason? askubuntu.com/questions/128250/…
all that says is don't package for launchpad
05:16
@aking1012 seems like its a serious source of contention for you - why dont you get some sleep and try it again tomorrow evening?
@lazyPower you make a good point...i just want this to work before i go to bed
even if it means renaming the package
I hear ya - but if you give it a bit of time and get a rockstar answer - you'll feel better about it. if I'm wrong I'll buy you a coffee and we can talk about it.
05:32

Is there an indicator like Battery-Status? http://askubuntu.com/questions/128198/is-there-an-indicator-like-battery-status?atw=1 #softwarerecommendation
@AmithKK i got it to re-up by changing the package name, there's still a question to be answered though
@lazyPower i know i should listen, but i'm just going to disconnect from chat and hammer at it until it works
Best of luck to ya, i'll see you at the finish line :)
05:52
it works
sigh of relief that i wasn't doing something horribly boneheaded
it'll be in software center tomorrow-ish
head.....waitforit....waitforit....desk
This is going to be awesome
the last slide - i prepare people for the how - Then i'm going to give a virtual tour of scrum-do and github :D
that'll eat a solid 10 minutes - they will be begging me to shut up by the time we reach that portion - i think i have a good mark in the bag at this point. 3d slideshow? check. Gource representation of what we do? check, enough BS to spin PM as the most important thing ever? check - virtual tours that will make paint dry sound appealing? check.
tomorrow is going to be epic. I'll let you know how it goes.
Hope it goes well
btw added my project ppa link to the question that spawned it: askubuntu.com/questions/120114/how-do-i-remove-the-video-lens
06:18
ty
idk of anyone else that started a ppa to answer a question so far
Minor edit - you may want to trim your screenshots to only the applicable area
valid point. i'll do that tomorrow. the goal today was putting the ppa in the answer
I'm out, gnight
night
Good night @lazyPower
06:30
o/ @Takkat
o/ @aking1012 - hello to all
Heya @Takkat :)
Hey @AmithKK
06:54
@lazyPower - I thought you were going to bed homie?

2 hours later…
08:26
my system is unbootable but I can still get into the files on the system... is there a way to get a useable list from this unbootable system, of packages that had been installed on it.... so I can just do a apt-get install <all the files in the list> ?
