@shanethehat When you get this, can you pop in to chat and ping either me or another moderator RE: Bounty spelling error.

@MarcoCeppi Waves.
Any news?

Lots of news?

(About Ondina, of course.)

Work continues on it :)

Any news about future invites?

12:40 AM
Yes, there will be more invites when the next version of the control panel is ready

How long will that take?

We take the Valve stance on software release. We release when we're ready and not a day sooner :)
The majority of the work is done by one person who also has a lot of other obligations, so an accurate estimate is never really easy

Oh, okay.

12:57 AM
Hello all, I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and am loving it! I was just wondering if there's a way to select which apps I want to be shown in the dash, instead of the Recent Apps and Recent Files?

@MarcoCeppi tons of flags coming your way

@JorgeCastro I noticed
Thank you sir!

@JorgeCastro do you sleep only when your flags are exhausted for the day?

fights to keep flag limits low

user19161
@ajmitch Maybe he does not need sleep.

1:11 AM
@ajmitch we either do them now or later, might as well try to get as many as we can now
then I suspect the next time the data dump updates we can go through and snag them all
@ajmitch you can go into and start voting to close please. :)
@jrg imo that should be a merge
not removing the other answers

jrg
@JorgeCastro really? we have good answers on that already

the the chrome://settings one though
that's a useful one

jrg
oh, true.

because you can always copy and paste chrome URLs to people
which is handy as hell
"click on this and select this option" instead of trying to walk people through dialogs
it's like, one of my favorite chrome features.

jrg
ok, merged.
and undeleted.

1:26 AM
<3

jrg
Ok, re-added that message Jorge.
and i'm going through in a few moments

it's a mess
You'll need a suit
and gloves

jrg
Good thing they hand those out to all moderators. :)
ok, need something stronger than water to make it through this mess.

is no picnic either
7,264 remain unanswered. In order to have an effective answer rate of 84% we need to "answer" 113 more questions.
well, at least we didn't get too smoked on the AR.

jrg
1:42 AM
Yeah true

stares and stares hard

jrg
Sorry to ruin your peaceful morning @jokerdino

sobs
I am taking a break on Labour day.

jrg
where is the "How do I get to a tty" question?

jrg
1:45 AM
thank you
Ugh, I don't have time for this right now. I'll just have to get up really early tomorrow and knock it out for a day.

2:05 AM
hey, I would like one of you to write to my teacher that I help in here so I can claim some hours for CAS..

user19161
2:20 AM
@JorgeCastro You could try closing them or deleting them if they are too vague or unanswerable.

Well, that's what we are attempting to do.

user19161
@jokerdino You can claim that for the IB? Interesting.

Claim for tech support? I don't know but I thought I should try.
I asked my teacher and she said she needs email proof from the Ask Ubuntu moderators that I actually do help out.
And then, she will consider whether or not I can claim. :/

Hehe, she just wants an email from ... someone with an official looking email?

someone with an @ubuntu.com email ID perhaps.

2:25 AM
But you have one, right? :-p

user19161
@jokerdino What I don't like about these requirements is that they force students to do community service. The intention is good but it may not produce the desired effects. Instead of developing caring citizens, students simply do these to fulfil a requirement.

@ChanHoSuh well I do ;p

user19161
@ChanHoSuh No cheating is allowed!

Jasper, that's true of every requirement

@jokerdino send me a mail with what you need

2:26 AM
@JasperLoy But I am different :D
@JorgeCastro alright boss, writing the email now.. Thanks!

I hate writing formal emails. I am just so bad at it :(
and sent you an email @jorge. Just hope you don't laugh at that... :/

Remember not to use "hey".. use "Dear..."

oops..

And don't end with "Peace out,". I suggest "Sincerely" or "Sincerely yours"

wait, did he ask me to write what should be written to my teacher or what should actually be written?

2:43 AM
lol, I think he just wanted you to spell out the requirements his email should satisfy.

@ChanHoSuh see I fail at writing formal emails.
good then, I think I did just that.

Jokerdino, I'm just teasing you :-) Your level of writing is obviously much higher than that.

I started with hi and ended with Thanks.

@jokerdino what about your other ubuntu work? Would that also count?

@ChanHoSuh I can never be sure of that. The more formal it goes, the more I stumble...
@JorgeCastro everything counts, but I want to put them under one single Ask Ubuntu umbrella, if you know what I mean.

2:47 AM
This is a man who knows how to market himself.

who is that? o.O

@jokerdino why not put everything under the ubuntu umbrella?

That would work too, I think.
well, that is actually a much better idea.
The thing is, I was expecting jrg to write the email. So, I was planning for Ask Ubuntu. :D
Jorge, as an Ubuntu community manager (or something along those lines), should add more weight to my form right?
man, I hope I am not trapped.

so this is off-topic, but I wonder why installing Rhythmbox requires nautilus

I see another problem coming. My teacher is going to know how exactly I waste my time instead of doing my acads :p
@ChanHoSuh Hmm I wonder why as well..
You hate Nautilus?

2:55 AM
"Hate" makes it sound personal... I just don't like big, cumbersome programs that try to do so much they actually start interfering with other programs

Can you install Rhythmbox and then remove Nautilus then?

That's what i'm hoping... because I recall having Rhythmbox and not Nautilus at some point... but maybe something has changed.
By the way, yeah your teacher might not like that, but in my experience, teachers are glad to see students are actually passionate about doing something worthwhile.

i can't tell for sure. let's just see how it goes..

So Jokerdino, I presume you listen to music... what music player do you prefer?

I was using Banshee for the last two releases, now I switched to Rhythmbox.
I stopped caring about the many features, I just want something that plays music.

3:03 AM
I actually feel a bit silly saying this, but I do miss iTunes.

There is some music player that tries to replicate that clutterless UI.
I think it is beatbox (elementary)

Hm, I'll check it out. But I'm a bit afraid of it becoming like the usual endless quest in Linux for X, where X is window manager/DE, file manager, lightweight web browser, etc.

too many choices spoils the kid, yeah :P

I recall the UI in rhythmbox being pretty nice. It seems pretty good now that I check it out again. Not sure why I changed. Maybe because I had the impression it was heavy on resources. But they all seem heavy on resources.
And by "heavy" I mean an amount that in the end doesn't really matter on a recent system.... I got sucked into that "OMG 1% CPU more and 20MB memory being wasted!" mentality
2

o.O
memory is much cheaper these days, we can just run programs with minor memory leaks.

3:14 AM
Yup. I think my main concern is Firefox. No point in scrimping everywhere else if I'm running that.

Firefox isn't much of a hog if you use Chrome.

LOL. Good one.

3:59 AM
how to get info about info about site traffic of askubuntu?

@Imnotthisperson You dont
Hello all
Happy May day :D

4:54 AM
@DavidPlanella Could you take a look at this question and update it its accepted answer to something that's reasonable for Ubuntu in 2012? Will bounty, if you care about that sort of thing.

5:19 AM
@aking1012 :) I'm watching it coz itz interesting. and coz i'm behind a proxy, nothing otherthan browsing transcripts in the browser seems to work. I'd like to see stack chat working.. :)

Hi Goooood morning!

@Prasad Good morning

I got a error message in the boot screen, "broken fan control cofiguration, re-run Pwm-config to ?????? " any ideas, I'm not using 12.04, but my old good looking and reliable 10.10

@Prasad Why are you on 10.10?

5:31 AM
because neither 12.04 made easy to me to use as this 10.10 do!
:-)
Any ideas how to solve it? i've run pwmconfig but it never solved

Upgrade Cinnamon
Give me a second to show you
@Prasad Should I post a screenshot?

MMmmm, may be, but this old hardware need no more new OSs I think, this monster can run win 7 ultimate 64bit like a arrow but OEM versions Expire after 6 Months (don't complain about me to microsoft, Okay)
KK
post it!
@AmithKK when will you post the screenshot bro! or are you posting the whole DE?

5:48 AM
Cinnamon(and Gnome Shell) is broken here
I should be doing a fresh install

@AmithKK lol, 10.10 is better
you see, those are the exact problems i faced, broken DE's

lol

gnome-shell is working for me. i installed it with apt-get install gnome-panel

@aking1012 It was working for me
Now It doesn't

12.04 great, and I have it installed, but I use it when somebody come to visit us!they touch their head and say, OMG I never tought windows 7 can be customized like this! and I reply yes my dear *** it's wow, and now it's not called win 7 but UBUNTU!

5:55 AM
Alright, let's see it.

Night all.

I couldn't steel my sister's internet modem (dongle) so i'm on a turtoise (Mobile phone) that's why it took so long (50kBps)
then, is it garbage?

Good night George.
Looks nice, Prasad. You might consider darkening your wallpaper a bit in the lower left. It's hard to see the leftmost tab title.

yes that's true, it's because of the wallpaper, panels are transparent
the wallpaper changed,

Oh, I see... you have it change periodically.

6:11 AM
yes, it the same script as the ubuntu's default, I just edited it and add some wallpapers, bit hard but enjoyable, desktop nova is great but it is better when you have your own style, isn't it?
@Takkat Hi

Good morning :)

good morning.. (UGT)

@Mahesh aha, you have just copied some style bro-UGT

ya, hello mahesh, good morning

I am terribly bored.

believe me, I can see mahesh everyday!
there is a forest near our house! (you can imagine the next story) but the model is the difference :-)

Recommend to me a good movie of not too recent vintage.

6:22 AM
@ChanHoSuh get back to me when you learn telugu / hindi. I've a good collection in store for u.

You presume so much! What makes you think I don't already know? :-/
Actually, I don't mind subtitles.

@ChanHoSuh lol

hmm....
@ChanHoSuh I've not liked it much, but u'll like it i presume. try if u can get hold of movie 'Orange' (lang:te)

Eh... why will I like it when you don't? That sounds kind of insulting somehow :-/

@ChanHoSuh no!!! i didn't mean that... its a movie that cn be interpreted in a multitude of ways. its good, but i didn't like it for my own reasons..
is someone about to quote "General discussion around Ubuntu & Ask Ubuntu and official Ubuntu derivatives."

6:30 AM
not me

does anyone remember who was the one that kept quoting the same over and over....
/me misses it
@ChanHoSuh googling??

Who.....

@Prasad why would i ask if i remember. ?? lol
wait.. we have transcripts and search... :D

@Mahesh Iamnot this person I think

@Mahesh, I think you're the one that keeps askig that

6:32 AM
askubuntu is filling with questions! nobody to answer them! :-(

Apr 26 at 19:04, by Mahesh
and now i'm waiting for someone to quote: General discussion around Ubuntu & Ask Ubuntu and official Ubuntu derivatives.

@jokerdino good memory..
@ChanHoSuh I asked it just twice

I'm leaving, it's time to make Wesak Lanterns and buckets, It's our wesak festival on 5th, bye, I will send some pics of the lanterns, bye

bye prasad, have fun
Mahesh, my apologies. Including today you've only brought this up 3 times :-)

no emphasis on only.

6:38 AM
Yep, i wil

Hm, "Orange" seems a bit too serious. I need something <s>brainless.</s> visceral..

Shaun of the dead series?
not exactly series but kinda

You know, I'm not sure I've ever seen that.

The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (also known as the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy) is a series of films directed by Edgar Wright, written by Simon Pegg and Wright, and starring Pegg and Nick Frost in leading roles. The first two films in the series are Shaun of the Dead (2004), "a romantic comedy with zombies", and Hot Fuzz (2007), a buddy cop action/comedy film. A third film, provisionally titled The World's End (2014), is planned for the future. Each film in the trilogy is connected to a Cornetto ice cream flavour – both of the films released to date feature scenes in which one...

Awesome!
My 9th std text book uses bluej

7:03 AM
So it's ok to make "canonical questions" like this? askubuntu.com/questions/126724/…

if Jorge is ok, we are cool.

I've already run into something that seemingly needs a "canonical" question.

what would that be?

I'm glad you asked! :-) Basically, the Ubuntu help pages suggest that it's a routine thing to install via USB onto a Mac. But it's not. It's incredibly painful.

@ChanHoSuh That Boot camp thing?

7:11 AM
So we always have people coming to Ask Ubuntu asking why it's not working. And then the best answer is usually, well use your optical drive to install, but people don't really believe that initially, given the official help pages.
"boot camp" is an umbrella term for the special firmware modifications and software that Apple uses to make dual booting with Windows possible.

good UGT night.. lunch time..

good night, mahesh... remember to tweet us how lunch goes

I can't really tell much about that, you might want to hold out until you hear from the Veterans.
BRB, rebooting.

This is kind of a separate thing from Boot Camp, although related. Boot Camp is basically a way to get through Apple's restrictions, but they still try to disallow booting Windows off USB, I believe.

Q: How to access Facebook and other forbidden websites in China?

巴梓诺I'm flying to China soon for a long time, so I'd like to know how to configure my Ubuntu 11.04 so I can access forbidden websites (like Facebook) I've heard about VPN and Proxy, but I don't know.

What a great title/question.

I find it a little annoying that my Lubuntu install has taken over my grub. Arrgh

7:25 AM
That's weird. You installed Lubuntu separate from your main system?

it is in one of the other partitions.
grub update was handled by Ubuntu install, but after upgrading Lubuntu from 11.04 to 12.04, it is handling my grub. :(

I guess Ubuntu (whatever flavor) will install the Grub files on the latest install.

yeah i think so too. That is exactly the kind of incident that forced me to join Ask ubuntu.
i don't know how exactly i fixed it. arrg

So I learned this thing about Grub recently because I saw a very similar problem to what you're having... I'll try and find it.
I think it was a question where someone installed Windows as a dual boot with Ubuntu, but then decided to delete Ubuntu... thereby finding out that Grub needed some files on the Ubuntu partition.

ah that one.

7:34 AM
So his question was how to get Grub working again.... and I remember there was a seemingly good answer. Whatever it was, that ought to do it for you, right?

Q: Windows disappeared from grub menu after deleting Ubuntu partition

srikanth chandrasekaranI was having problem with booting Ubuntu. Then I used Easeus partition manager to delete the partition that has Ubuntu. Maybe I have done it wrong. Because now I have also lost Windows. Luckily I came to know of a tool called boot repair from this forum. I used and here is the result from it Past...

>objectplace 0
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

dont think so

Yeah, sorry. That one is too Windows specific.
So is what you want to do, somehow move all the Grub stuff to your another Ubuntu partition?

yeah

7:38 AM
Sounds like a pretty good question :-)

i have already asked it ^

@jokerdino Is this bad?

You want to hear about an interesting wi-fi problem? :)

let's hear

So I have no problem connecting through wi-fi in Ubuntu at pretty much every place I go, with different kinds of authentication schemes.
However, there is this one coffee shop, which has an open network, where this issue occurs.

sounds interesting.

Sometimes when I try to connect, it's all good, but other times, it will connect but be extremely slow. Pings to Google drop most of the time.
The way I've fixed it (and it always works, even if I have to try a couple times) is by deleting the saved settings for their wireless network. Then I reboot and let Ubuntu detect the network again.
I've fiddled with all the settings. They don't seem to do anything to fix the problem. In fact, they look pretty normal. But it's when I delete the network and then reboot... that seems to be the key. Weird, huh?

7:59 AM
Yes and no

What?!

Sometims I''ve seen 2G networks do the same thing
@ChanHoSuh Try connecting to my wifi network :P

I wish I could.
This problem is kind of annoying me in a slow way.

So the thing that's nagging me is why this one place. No other place! Is it them? Or is it me (and in particular, is it nm-applet acting up)?

@ChanHoSuh some access points fudge channel numbering and frequency bands. if it usually works, i would suspect the access point

I'd post it as a question... but I get the feeling I'm not gonna get anything useful. "Too localized."

I don't know what I did but somehow all the distros are suddenly available in the grub boot menu. Just the way I like. Thanks everyone for your time. :) — jokerdino Oct 1 '11 at 4:55
Idiot.

Yeah, the problem came back to bite you.

I hate him!

8:05 AM
@aking1012 Do you have any suggestions, if it's the access point, how I can avoid this whole rebooting business?

@ChanHoSuh WPA or WEP?

It's an open network.

I see
Router?

Yes

I meant Which router :D

8:07 AM
lol
I guess I can ask them next time. I don't know.

@ChanHoSuh for that one network i might turn of networkmanager and when the connection goes screwy, and iwlist and see if the channel is off by 1

@ChanHoSuh them?

:-)
Ok, thanks, aking. I wonder why networkmanager can't handle this....

because it thinks it's connected
if i'm right about channel fudging that is

Well, when I'm using OS X there, this doesn't happen... and it doesn't seem like any of the other customers ever have this issue (but of course, I doubt anybody else there is using anything other than Windows or OS X)

8:17 AM
this is true, but the big companies that right the drivers know to fudge the same way...it's a function of the drivers for linux being written properly
i only know about this problem because it was a topic in a talk from the guys that made aircrack

Well, that makes sense....but from a usability viewpoint, I wish open-source developers could be more compromising. I still have a "grudge" against the Mozilla Thunderbird developers for not allowing the user to choose to read plain text email the way they want (it's been a common complaint for more than 5 years by now)

i can see that one from both sides. i think they're equally valid

Well, it's a bit ridiculous when you respond to a plain text email and all of a sudden it becomes unwrapped.
So you have to then hit the wrap keyboard shortcut.
You can't even set it as a preference because the developers say you shouldn't have that choice. It'd be breaking the standard.

you mean like themes for gnome3? chuckles a little

I'm not familiar with what's going on with Gnome 3. What's up with the themes?

8:24 AM
Why is Ask Ubuntu being linked to from Apport? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/3017/why-is-ask-ubuntu-being-linked-to-from-apport?atw=1

there are only two selectable themes by default, okay maybe 4...but most of the themes were disabled

I find it interesting the choices that are being made to appeal more to the masses.

well, i think the theme disabling thing had to do with the other themes not having full gtk3 versions, so they were disabled

Well, that's the thing...basically they're worried about how it looks to the typical computer user... unprofessional. Now they have to deal with a user base that isn't going to take "you should know these are not gtk3 yet" as a good excuse.

8:34 AM
That's an interesting enough point I suppose. The part that baffles me is the new user that wants to do all manner of witchery to their DE b/c their linux guru buddy has it set up that way without realizing the penalties the buddy just accepts. <--did that make sense?

Yes, I get what you're saying.
I think it's partly that linux guru buddy's fault though.

how so?

I don't want to overgeneralize :-) but it's evident there is at least a certain breed of linux advocate that advertises the customizability and diversity of the Linux eco-system while at the same time not explaining the difficulties that can arise with taking advantage of said diversity.

Oh definitely. That's why my default answer is 'just use it the way it is'. -- 'But I want to learn to compile something from source' -- Set up a VM and work through the LFS book. You'll understand
Kind of like hammering away at the just use the openjdk or just use eclipse from repository. Most of the bugs for eclipse on 12.04 just go away if you do.

So I think Canonical understands this, but it's kind of funny that in the end, they're trying to create a kind of "locked down" environment like with proprietary software.

8:44 AM
I don't think so. You can always repack the debs. It's just that way so it's easier out of the box

Well, that's why I used quotes :-) But I do think their approach is somehow different, and it's annoying a lot of people.

there are points where i can agree with a subset of that. like i don't particularly like that the sudo/su gksu/gksudo stuff isn't the same as mainline any more. i see the use case though
:~$ ls -la /usr/bin/gksudo
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Apr  6 15:56 /usr/bin/gksudo -> gksu

that's interesting

i think they did it to fix things like sudo nano now you can't write to your own .nano*

You're on the East coast?

8:54 AM
yes

I'm getting sleepy, and i just realized you are either a super night-owl, or a super early-bird

or both. i don't sleep 8 at a time
get some sleep though

alright, good night

night

@aking1012 You sleep for an a hour?

9:11 AM
i sleep for 3-4 at a time once or twice a day

@aking1012 So you take powernaps?

something like that

public class sleep()
{
meh

def daily():
    interesting = 1
    while(interesting):
        modinterest = read()
        modinterest += type()
        interesting += modinterest
    os.sleep(14400)
    daily()

9:27 AM
I want to learn java
The hard way ;)

that should have been time.sleep...but anyway

TypeError: type() takes 1 or 3 arguments
:-P

BBL

9:43 AM
@NiekBergman :] I was thinking custom read and type routines

Hehe, I don't think you want to override the built-in type() though :-P

it was a toy/joke. not production code

10:01 AM
Hehe, I know :)

i don't always get sick, but when i do, it's during long weekends with awesome weather...

I'm joking too, the joke being that I'm taking it seriously :D

lies! :P

@htorque: Uhuh. "Sick". wink wink

@htorque I know that feeling. Seems like you only get sick when it's least convenient

10:05 AM
it's not only a sunny long weekend, i also have a job interview tomorrow. it's never convenient to get sick, but it couldn't get more inconvenient i guess. :D
