Tim StoneIf a question is closed while you're answering, you will receive a notification that the question was closed and the 'Post Your Answer' button will be disabled. However, this is only a client-side restriction, so it is possible in some cases that this process fails. When it does, the backend all...

@OliveTwist create a "real" question yourself - and answer it immediately.

maybe they updated after that post. sorry about that.

anyway, i'm posting it here
When an Ubuntu version is released, it features get frozen. The updates provided for it is mostly security updates and patches. But major changes of software will not be released (included in the repository) for this release.

That is why the default enabled Ubuntu repositories include *security-updates*, *updates* and *proposed* repositories. The first two repositories include bug-fixes and security updates and *proposed* is used for testing the newer updates.

Mainly the backports repository's function as said in the [Wiki][1] is --
I don't think that was a very good one
but i tried
the main point is, normally we can't even expect the backported softwares

righto.

those are really provided by the generous devs

3:10 PM
@OliveTwist well, go write a real question and answer it. :P

@jrg i don't think that would be ideal.
but i dont know

jrg
@jokerdino can you explain why? because i think it's a good question, was just poorly done.
even if the answer is "because they haven't done it', it's still got an answer.

yeah. i guess i am just a bit slow processing stuff now.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: So I emailed SANS about some stuff, and now they won't stop emailing me. Are all sales reps this pushy?

Q: How should we deal with bounty questions that are confirmed bugs?

fossfreedomThis question is with reference to this bounty question: How do I theme the Sound Menu playback buttons? As the OP has indicated, this is technically a bug - there is a launchpad bug-report, confirmation that it is a bug and in this case it looks like a possible workaround by moving to Quanta...

That bug report is actually by OP himself.
So not sure if we should consider it as a bug.

refund and close
voted to the jokerdino's answer

But I would also want to add another negative answer ;p
Just not now.
Almost time.

@jrg I never had occasion to speak to any of their sales reps

@jokerdino like?

@OliveTwist like they knew what they were doing. they were gambling with rep, etc.

3:35 PM
I won't recommend this, because some new users may be unaware of the fact that bug questions are off-topic

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Good. Don't. Ever. :P
my first question was closed as a bug.
now, since then I've made it into the canonical "unity crashed, wat do" question, but still. ;)

My first was answered and second was a bug but wasn't closed. I deleted it after a couple of months.
@jrg oh that one!

I knew this fact after crossing 900~ rep may be
i bountied a question which is a bug
and @jrg refunded it and closed it

btw, when i said something like gun.io for launchpad bugs, i didn't mean posting bounties on AU...

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing yup.

3:41 PM
BBL (dinner time)

FYI I'm an idiot and didn't know mods could 'refund' bounties, so will be deleting my answer here and comments here. Hey,at least I learned something new today...

No no. I am sorry.

jrg
no, don't worry about it.

Q: Markdown in chat fails for multi-line messages

sbiWe've come to rename Markdown to Letdown in the C++ chat room because it lets you down so often. I've now just found a pattern. It seems markdown fails for multi-line messages. That is, this Letdown can't cope with multi-line comments. Let's see code? fails to display code marked as co...

I thought they would bydesign it.

Be back tomorrow.

Q: Meaning of colours in htop

BeaksGiven the option: [ ] Detailed CPU time (System/IO-Wait/Hard-IRQ/Soft-IRQ/Steal/Guest) In htop (Version 1.0.1) what are the meanings of the colours? So... if anyone wants to host the bot... (Perhaps someone has spare room on a VPS and is feeling particularly generous? :P)

@GeorgeEdison I'll host it for the AU stuff on freenode

A: How about adding RSS feeds for certain tags in IRC channels?

is setting it up now

5:23 PM
Sweet!
Please let me know if you have any questions or run into any trouble.

will do

During testing, I tried using the php tag on Stack Overflow... and got booted off for flooding the channel since so many questions with that tag were being asked - oops :P
The bot probably needs to limit the number of questions posted at a time to something like 2 or 3 - of course this won't be a problem for AU - we don't get anywhere near that many questions asked with respect to any one tag.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing seriously? aren't you the one I'm looking for?

jrg
Apparently, Linux neckbeards like to read. OK. - humblebundle.com

@GeorgeEdison how do I add a password for a registered nick?

I don't have that feature yet.
But I can easily add it.

@GeorgeEdison that seems to be the last thing missing

Okay.

I'll let you know if it works when someone asks a Juju question :P

Q: 18 days for quantal final release. What do you expect?

alex vallvi18 days for quantal final release. And to dual boot, how many days? without support UEFI yet no dual boot

@penreturn to stick with LTS

heheheehe... yeah FTW!

is there a mod in room that feels like purgifying some comments? they're not bad, so i don't want to flag them...they're just no longer useful

@penreturn its the [Control] key on a German keyboard layout.

9:12 PM
ohhhh! another new thing i learn today! thanks @Takkat

[Ctrl][Alt][Del] is [Strg][Alt][Entf]

need to copy this. so when its come to edit, should i rename to Ctrl or just remain?

Installing packages that require system restart, from a Juju charm http://askubuntu.com/q/198293?atw=1 #upstart

@penreturn it does need an edit (who sits on a German board anyway?)
Time for bed now - cu tomorrow

hey @GeorgeEdison

a friend gave me his old ppc, and I compiled a version of nitroshare for it!

9:38 PM
Really?
I have an open bug requesting a PPC version.

jrg
Does it work?

Actually it wasn't a bug - it was a question.
@mateo_salta: Would you like me to comment on the question or would you like to do the honors?

I can do a "try this build" with a link...

Sure.

@jrg - I think all the comments on this can be purged askubuntu.com/questions/198336/…

jrg
9:42 PM
destroyed without mercy.

ok, there we go @GeorgeEdison

ty, i only didn't delete mine b/c it's a new user and it wouldn't have sunken in and just looked stupid

I think there was someone on your QMS site asking about ppc, and you said it would be easy.... hmmm.

jrg
no worries.

@mateo_salta :)

9:54 PM
@GeorgeEdison was it you that wanted to be able to record from anything the other day?
wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Examples <-- alsa monitor section should fix you right up

Ah, thanks.
Yeah - I was trying to record and playback from VLC.
I could get one or the other to work but not both.

10:06 PM
Well later, I ran into the same problem as that the user on that question @GeorgeEdison to solve I added libqjson.a to the nitroshare project, (generate it first using qmake in the qjson directory, is up a directory from the project)

qjson is always giving me headaches.
If there was an alternative, I'd jump on it.

OH WOW. I just ran a performance benchmark on that data server I wrote last year.
That little guy can handle upwards of 1000 search requests per second.

jrg
i'm jealous of you.

Turns out I made a mistake in the code that measures performance - that was only user time, not actual time.
It's actually closer to 220 requests per second.
But the 220 includes network I/O, etc.
And it does all of that while syncing with the API every 2 minutes to stay up to date.

jrg
11:55 PM
still, not bad.
