@AbrahamVanHelpsing So that one --^ x2
documentation? who does that?
kan
kan
@Mochan The docstrings are never read by the autograder.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Oh. Your not in context? (Or are you?) I'm doing an assignment. Ah...
@kan So it doesn't matter?
@Mochan: no, its good practice tho ;p
kan
kan
@Mochan No. :-). But, for a discipline in programming, I suggest you go through the painful thingy...
12:02
@JourneymanGeek Huh...
But if what you said @JourneymanGeek, (time_2-time_2) is correct. Does that mean mine will be marked wrong without the parentheses?
@Mochan: brackets keep things near
I think it works without that
Do you mind if I add them just in case?

in TeX, LaTeX and Friends, 2 hours ago, by egreg
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/foo and then sudo cp foo.sty /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/foo
code is usually read more often than written, so better invest some time in make it readable (for everyone, not just yourself). ;-)

12:05
@JourneymanGeek, @kan Is suppose this is also incorrect? It works, but is most likely not proper...
def hours_difference(time_1, time_2):
'''(float, float) -> float

Return the number of hours later that a time in seconds
time_2 is than a time in seconds time_1.

>>> hours_difference(1800.0, 3600.0)
0.5
>>> hours_difference(3600.0, 1800.0)
-0.5
>>> hours_difference(1800.0, 2160.0)
0.1
>>> hours_difference(1800.0, 1800.0)
0.0
'''
return (time_2 - time_1) / 60 ** 2
kan
kan
@jokerdino I was asked to do that... I don't understand what that's supposed to do.
@kan it creates a directory in /usr/local/.... and copies foo.sty to that place
you should be in home for that to work
kan
kan
@jokerdino But, how'll the bash know where is foo.sty?
@kan where is your foo.sty?
cd to that place and try
kan
kan
Oh, OK.
@Mochan It is right. Why do you think it is improper?
12:07
Anybody who likes hex editing here?
@AmithKK nope
Nyaaaaa. I have to go, folks. I'll see y'all tomorrow.
@Mochan good night.
11pm says hi
@kan My answer was a structured guess. I tested it, but the way I got it was by just think "Hm... will this work"?
@jokerdino Night~ ^O^
stratos delayed again :(
2:30h
12:09
See you everyone. Thanks @kan and @JourneymanGeek for your help ~ ^^
kan
kan
@Mochan Oh, OK. It's right.
I'm out~
@AmithKK i dont dislike it.
i have absolutely no idea what that is about
12:12
yay, did the finite state machines lecture for networking
which was bloody hard
@AmithKK and? sudo apt-get install hexed and get started...
hi @RolandTaylor and @OliveTwist
hi everyone
12:20
hi @AbrahamVanHelpsing
kan
kan
A reminder @jokerdino, please link me to a copy of the pdf from U1... :)
@kan oh oops.
i totally forgot
we should all clean our profiles to nothing and change either our uname OR our gravatar. that way it's like a complex game of memory to carry on a conversation...
but not both?
kan
kan
12:23
@jokerdino dl is not starting...
it does for me o.O
I removed an email. i wanted to comment it to the op. should I?
@jokerdino hey
kan
kan
@jokerdino From a different mirror now!
hi @Roland
12:24
@kan if it doesn't work, i'll link you to u1
I was afk
@OliveTwist hihi
Liked that one →
@AmithKK + sonic == obsession of the sick kind
we have 5 greenish gravatar on the room \o/
once upon a time, we all were oli
kan
kan
12:27
Downloaded. :-) @jokerdino
@kan neat
@jokerdino what? we were oli?
@OliveTwist 11 months ago
I've been on this site for only ~5 months
kan
kan
My keyboard layout has completely changed.
12:31
change it back
Oh, i think you were saying we all had same gravatar , 11 months ago
kan
kan
I used to have the backslash key but it has become <
o/ fossfreedom
@OliveTwist yeah
\o/
green for win!
12:35
kan
kan
Where do I see what key is mapped to which?
@kan open dash, keyboard layout,
...do I really need to do A1?
@jokerdino LOL
@Mochan i thought you were sleeping.
(I was a noob this time last year)
12:37
though, i don't know the back story for this
kan
kan
@Mochan I would say so... if you're stuck, we can discuss that...
his birthday is on 11-11
kan
kan
@jokerdino But, it does not tell me specifically key-wise...
let me see
@kan, alright. When we were discussing the get_minutes, get_seconds and get_hours thing before - and I just copied and pasted what I had already written, but the handout makes it out to be something completely different. In other words, I don't know what I'm doing.
kan
kan
12:40
OK. Do you understand what you need to do? As in, the end goal?
@jokerdino, I couldn't sleep...
@Mochan you poor thing.
@kan my knowledge so far is: I need to write a function to output the amount if seconds, minutes and hours have elapsed since midnight. That's all I understand.
kan
kan
@Mochan perfect. You're right.
@jokerdino are you being sarcastic...?
12:42
@Mochan hm no o.O
i am just a bit busy
writing code
@kan I'm relieved. But I don't understand how I would do that. Like... I don't know.
kan
kan
So, you see, we are allowed to input any whole number as the number of seconds elapsed.
Ok...
kan
kan
So, there are a couple of problems that arise out of this.
you on mobile..
12:43
@jokerdino yes
that wasn't a question.
kan
kan
For instance, if someone input 108000 as that number, what is the number of hours, number of minutes and number of seconds elapsed?
but thank you anyway
@kan... I don't know, 1,800 hours?
kan
kan
@Mochan the input is: number of seconds elapsed. :-)
12:45
And then you must add that to midnight? -dies-
@Mochan you added me on G+?
kan
kan
@Mochan Noooooooooo~. :-)
Oh. So 3
kan
kan
@Mochan 30 hours, no?
@RolandTaylor did I? :S
12:47
fries
I was checking
Cause I saw someone that looked a little like you add me (and a lot of people add me daily)
Roland is a popular figure in G+
Yeah
@kan right. Forgot a zero in the equation continue.
e_e he is?
I have never met him, I guess he doesn't like small fry like me...
12:48
he is
@RolandTaylor lucky~
:P
@Mochan I guess I just have that effect on people
I'm a popular figure on nowhere
"ADD ME OR DIE"
kan
kan
@Mochan OK. Now, this is weird. Because, there are only 24 hours in a day and 30 hours could not have elapsed since any given midnight. This happens because a certain number of days has passed.
12:49
@Mochan you're one now
@Mochan which place is that?
she is popular on Minecraft.
Everyone in the AU chatroom who is active - is popular
i checked her background.
@jokerdino D:
yuck
I need to scrub
lolz
@RolandTaylor also scrubber
12:50
:P
@kan alright. That makes sense. So is there a limitation in place (do I have to add it?)
need to say more weird creepy stuff
kan
kan
@Mochan So, there are preconditions:
@jokerdino I'm noob on minecraft.
12:50
if not I'm going to divide by zero
and get a value...
kan
kan
1. 0<=num_hours<23
1 hour ago, by jokerdino
42 is the answer.
kan
kan
2. 0<=num_min<60
@Mochan LIEs
kan
kan
3. 0<=num_secs<60
12:52
@Mochan oh yeah?
kan
kan
4. they are all integers.
lol afk
~40mins
@kan that also makes sense, but do they expect me to be able to so that with mere two weeks assumed experience?
kan
kan
@Mochan Yup. Not hard :-) So, we can do it.
12:53
@kan I hope. Your being such a help, really, thank you.
you are being such a help. thank you
@jokerdino I'm depressed, tired and angry, not now. Please.
@Mochan good night.
you are cute when angry
@jokerdino I'm not sleeping. I have I get this assignment done.
but you are on mobile?
12:55
Yes
I'm doing it through text. It's a last resort.
hm okay
~_~
@kan I'll try my best. I have to do the preconditions now, right? How are they applied?
kan
kan
@Mochan Hint: %. Use modular arithmetic.
(Remember that floats can be operands of %. )
Apparently this // is also useful because its....
It makes the answer an integer!!
kan
kan
Yep. :-))
13:01
Also, for the seconds_difference or hours/minutes there are preconditions, do I put them in or do they stay as stings?
@kan am I allowed to ask for an extension...? It's 12AM and I can't do anything until 6 PM tomorrow, and deadline is at 4.
kan
kan
@Mochan you just need to ensure that you're returning outputs that are sensible...
@Mochan unfortunately, no. they give no extensions. :(
I don't know what to do... Damn. If only I knew there was a deadline after the duedate afterwards.
I'll see if Google can be useful. Ugh. This is awful...!
kan
kan
See, do you want to look at my code?
That's cheating. Right?
that's referencing
kan
kan
13:09
See, I am not asking you to cheat... see how it's done.
Perhaps just a little more than a starter code.
Alright. I am liable for all damages ;)
Ty. You have no idea.
kan
kan
Do I post some bits to assist you here? I'll be here for a couple more hours.
(with a small break in between)
Ty. That would be so unbelievably helpful. Hopefully I won't be here for that long, it's already 12:13.
@mochan and @kan, i'll setup a new chatroom.
you guys are too "noisy"
kan
kan
Sorry.
13:15
@kan no problem.
Objective in sight.
still in progress
I'm on it.
13:23
Thanks

Which proves he can do better, but chooses not to.
But, he should use common sense and realize that if he's doing junk, it will be rejected and he won't get the rep he seeks.
Also, when you've got to go to church in an hour, it's annoying to have to deal with such stupidity... :)
13:28
yeah -.-
yo, you should not be on internet then
(Point? Less :D)
@jokerdino lol it's okay
I can't actually do anything but eat at this point, have to wait till the shower is free
morning
13:36
o/ mistrfu
@RolandTaylor That is not spam. Most people are not familiar with the term "track stick." With that said, it's not the best edit to provide that information, as it doesn't help people who cannot view images due to technical limitations or disabilities. I've edited it to add an inline link to the Wikipedia article on "Pointing stick." As far as I have seen--which is admittedly limited--all of that user's edits as well-intended, and almost all can either be accepted or approved upon.
@RolandTaylor you taught him
@EliahKagan I rejected with that reason for the second half of the edit reason.
(That is, defaces the post in some way).
@OliveTwist :P
victory \o/
@mistrfu o|
13:42
@jokerdino for what sir?
we taught him?
Oh. indeed. it is
afk - food
@RolandTaylor That makes sense; I suppose it's reasonable to see it as defacing the post as it introduces unnecessary text in parentheses in the middle of a sentence. I usually just inline such links into the original text itself, so reading flow is no longer interrupted.
Does gconf still work in 12.10?
13:54
most default are using dconf
what happened to amith's script?
can i have it?
he dropboxed me
@jrg Sounds fantastic, I don't really need anything, I can get a 20+4 Pin PSU online for ~$30, so I think Andrew and I can put together everything he needs. Let me put it this way. He needs everything. He has an old HP workstation from 2000 with red hat on it, bios is locked, OS is locked, and it won't boot externally. Simply replace the hard drive right? Well, he's adamant that it's a crappy computer. Repairing it would be less than advantageous.
@jrg I would give him my old G5 or Dell desktop, yet, I kind of need the Dell for a new media server, and the G5 to pay for my new PSU and whatever else the desktop may need.

And I needed it.
It's always those we need most that get lost soon. The ones we never touch are left over.

Q: Thin configuration doesn't start on boot, but they do on manual start

zad0xsisI have some thin config files (generated with sudo thin install) which are slightly modified (only paths where they're located). I can start them just fine with /etc/init.d/thin start, but if the server is restarted, they're not auto started. I issued the update-rc.d thin defaults command to ...

Yearling finally came - I was already wondering.
yay
wait whoa
So now I can make a break ;P
@Takkat someone has a page-check bash script
Well - I cant no more - too much used to being here.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing well that would be cheating, woudn't it?

"half of winning is to rig the game" -- johnny depp in some movie
There was one day when it was hard. I was abroad and the place I was had no WiFi, GSM was poor too.
oh well...off to the bookstore - "I'm always looking for a future ex-Mrs Malcolm" -- Jurassic Park
in bookstores?
good luck then
yep. you can gauge a lot about a person by what they read...
14:20
Or not read :P
In book stores I only hang out in the IT section and have never seen a girl there
Not once
Then I go pick up my gf and always find some guy, his hopes crazy hight, trying to chat her up :)
They are around the corner on a different floor. They hide the IT books from them.
in fantasy section
patio ... where you drink coffee and read. if they're reading graphic novels...no. if they're reading political pundits or something intellectual talk to them. just saying.
14:22
It's actually funny, every other section in bookstore when people meet in front of a shelf they chat. We, in IT shelf, avoid each other.
inner hipster is screaming aloud
I found my Lojbanic IronKey back! :D
@Takkat I think, you don't need to login for every days in the whole year
@mistrfu over here its more like eeek someone made a noise - better go.
@OliveTwist you have - ask htorque. He had to start all over some time ago
14:24
@penreturn ping a mod or post it on meta
@AbrahamVanHelpsing I just find it too personal I guess, to interrupt someone from reading. On the other hand I would love to be interrupted.
check your watch. if they do the same, they're subconsciously paying attention to you
@mistrfu by a shop assistant (male) asking "Can I help you?"?
Fanatic is a Gold badge for only 100 days consecutive. So, I thought, yearling being a Silver means you don't need consecutiveness there
it seems i'm wrong
@OliveTwist yeah not for yearling, you only need 200 rep
14:26
@Takkat Oh. i was talking about the yearling
Here we scan the other person hea to toe, look at what he is looking at and form an opinion about him by that one book.
Example: He is holding webdevelopment for dummies = he hass no clue, this is not his section
He is holding PRactical Haskell Projects = he knows way too much, better run
^thought we were talking about the consecutiveness
@mistrfu the Haskell one is of no harm - he will nevva talk to you.
@Takkat Yeah, cause in my head "How can YOU help me? This is such a specific problem and I'm afraid you know less about it than me"
@Takkat he doesn't need to he can probably kill with a single thought.
lol
14:29
Also, the fun thing is I go there to "socialize". And look for new books. Both attempt fail every SINGLE time, without exception. I then go home and order the book on Amazon
(10k+ users)
<-- is dizzy from the A B A C B A B C question
Every so many visits to a bookstore I buy something smallm like bash pocket reference, or javascript pocket reference, just to not steal their air.
why he deleted that?
14:30
@OliveTwist check rev history
@jokerdino 2 upvotes
@jokerdino checked already. i guess there was an error
yes, confirmed
ok, marco gave a better answer.
@jokerdino he was 3 min. earlier.
14:32
oh heh
i am just not in the right mind
Hi guys!
14:42
coid
So, I havea Ubuntu question! Can I shoot?
@mistrfu Please do:D
@mistrfu sure
14:43
pew pew pew
@OliveTwist what?
aaaaaaarrrgh
DON'T SHOOT
@OliveTwist AH LOL
@jorge, we are making some progress on the unity reset script.
14:44
Is there a way to stop app center from loading all that content when I open it? It takes way too long, all I want is to get to visual repo search.
use aptitude search
<-- uses synaptic
+1 for synaptic
aptitude is awesome
I use apt-cache search, but when I am in a clicky mood
14:45
synaptic is just gui of aptitude ;p
that made it awesomer
It tells you what dependencies it will grab in addition before you go.
(or what needs to be removed)
I especially like the bottom bar with all 5 tabs
Alright installing synaptic, will check it out. Haven't see it in years :)
> 2256 installed.
14:48
I like ^this one
> 2710 installed
That's 12.10...
It's 12.04
I was wondering how come I has no tabs
you have to enable this from preference
ooooh - synaptic haz prefrences????
14:50
Preference -> General tab -> "Show package properties in main window"
\o/
<-- never checked preferences from synaptic because I thought it was good the way it is
But these tabs are better
scroll the dependencies
lolz
also the "installed files"
"versions"
0 is not much
14:53
See? No tabs
3 mins ago, by Olive Twist
Preference -> General tab -> "Show package properties in main window"
Sorrry for quality, I have old CRT monitor.
5
huahhahaha
You can resolve dependencies very good with synaptic. Though aptitude is better in this case
say wha??
why is it weirdish
14:55
Haz ultra-wide screen
2
how do you guys do this?
thanks
----> LOL!
can i restrict a process to use only 50% cpu share?
I'm not interested in priority
can both be same?
ooooooh, this Aptitude is awesome. Especially with the tabs on. It's like another dmension.
