A: How to run a shell script when a new USB storage device is detected?

con-f-useUse Udev. Udev is a device manager daemon. Amongst other things it is responsible for naming your devices. You can define udev-rules by putting files with a certain syntax in the rules directory. The rules can do many things - in particular they can run scripts, when a certain device is connected...

This answer is awesome but dosent fill the point
@MarcoCeppi I wanted to ask you this a few days before
What OS do you use on your server Debian or ubuntu?
@Oli some guys say that has to do with the version of 'lib32-nvidia-utils'. i'm currently on 32-bit and i don't see that package, so it's probably for 64-bit only?
can you do apt-cache policy lib32-nvidia-utils?
@Amithkk Server Type: Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu)

Q: How can I refresh/reinstall/clear/set-to-default my bootup process?

TchalvakI'm currently having a problem with my bootup process that is growing progressively worse as time goes on: While booting, it does a few minutes of hard-drive reading. During that, instead of showing a boot splash screen, it shows various dashes and dots, as if the video card isn't recognizing. ...

dude never reported back - i hope i wasn't right about the dying hard disk :D

@htorque you know of the BenQ Monitor TVs?
I had one (until I had to send it back because of going to standby after 2-3 hours)
24" is pretty large - i would have to move my head all the time to see everything :D
you get used to it!
Im having a 29"

10:42
Well, the cartridge is fine. its a software thing
I can print text okay, but not grayscale images
don't put the laser into hot water!
oh, that sounds like fun
@StefanoPalazzo gimme the model number
interesting!
now I put it into "draft" mode, and it worked
and it's fast like nobody's business. okay, now I'm slightly happier (:
10:44
I dont think your printer likes making final copies of things :)
maybe we can obtain a quantity discount if we both buy a new printer ;D
@Amithkk it's an HP deskjet 3550

hi @all :D
Hello @Alvar

11:20
I am
in the biological sense?
kinda
@Amithkk cool, can you tell me about NS records?
I understand they point to a nameserver. is that something that I can really do?
Oli
Oli
@StefanoPalazzo What's the issue?
nice c&p :D
Oli
Oli
11:22
Domain records (that you edit with your registrar) point at nameservers. Nameservers point at IPs or other domains.
Yes, yes it is
@Oli so, I can just set up my own nameserver and use it for load balancing and things?
that sounds pretty great
wikipedia says "Delegates a DNS zone to use the given authoritative name servers", but I can just use any old nameserver right? I don't have to be icann? (i.e.: what does authoritative mean here?)
Oli
Oli
Any nameserver. ZoneEdit.com is a good free one if you don't have one of your own (or one with your registrar or host - who do commonly provide a nameserver service)
DynDNS (at al) too
@Oli fantastic. thanks :)
Oli
Oli
11:26
I'd recommend not running your own nameserver on your own server because if it goes down, everything can be down for hours.
Most nameserver services have redundant servers (eg ns1.linode.com, ns2.linode.com, ns3... etc)
@Oli well, the idea would be to run it on the same server the domain points to
3
Q: What are NS records?

I am changing host and my new host said: Meanwhile, in order your newly registered hosting account to function correctly until the transfer is ready, you can change the NS records to the following: ns1.itahost.com ns2.itahost.com What does this mean?

so that I can then run my own dynamic DNS for my home
@StefanoPalazzo You will need DDclient
like on mine
Oli
Oli
Yeah, I'd recommend something like ZoneEdit or DynDNS for that. They'll always be up and they have an API that allows you to dynamically update records.
11:28

Oli
@htorque I do love a good random fact.
@Oli makes sense, yeah
I didn't even manage to think of a good domain name to buy, so no hurry :)
today will be a slow au day it seems :-()
@StefanoPalazzo www.stefano.palazzo ?
@Amithkk I run mostly Ubuntu now, but I do have some CentOS servers
@Rinzwind weekends usually are slow

@Rinzwind boring :)
ok then what about www.amazing.amazingly
@Rinzwind seems it shifted one day: the good forecast was for sunday here and now it's monday with 31°C
but tbh, i don't think so
that's about 200k€ :P
a bit steep I think
11:32
it's friggin cold outside and rainy
@MarcoCeppi You take 1 minute to delete a question and 5 hours for to give me a reply?
^i know that ill get banned for that

@Rinzwind are you free?

wow, that sucks. a bunch of ubuntu certified dell notebooks use a touchpad that is recognized as mouse (thus not being able to be configured)

Q: Detect touchpad as touchpad

Undecided / Confirmed
The 'Precision' part is wrong
what do you mean?
Dell Precision M4600
@Amithkk nope, doesn't seem to work
I haven't had the best experience with my dyndns provider either (freedns), but at list their updating method is absolute brilliant
you just open up a url, containing a hash of your username and password. that's it
dyndns works fine for me (the update is done via my dd-wrt router)
no-ip.com should also work fine
12:07
@StefanoPalazzo ooh.. my apache or ftpd was not running
my problem is that it takes a full hour for the update. They say the TTL goes down to 60 seconds after a successful update, but it doesn't seem to work
whew, an hour is bad
yeah
@Amithkk now it works (by the way, you shouldn't be running an FTP server)
for me its just
sudo ddclient
Why?
due to low speed?
why use FTP when you can use SSH?
seems to me there's no reason at all to use FTP
12:10
@StefanoPalazzo not all devices can moust sftp
sure, to get arrested when people decided to upload illegal stuff to it :P
@htorque good point
All the popular clients, like Filezilla, gvfs, and so on support ssh these days
unloads ftp
but you *should* be running a gopher server
we all need to pull together to resurrect this poor, misunderstood protocol
12:11
@StefanoPalazzo i need ot to work when i will run the url in a browser
@Amithkk for that you should use HTTP
Http can list files like ftp?
is there a SE site for asking application related questions (like chromium)?
take a look at cdimages.ubuntu.com
@htorque superuser
12:14
@StefanoPalazzo demonstrate
but if you're running Chromium on Ubuntu, you should ask it here :)
thanks
hehe
but it's not really ubuntu related
@StefanoPalazzo how do that
Give me the config and instructions
@Amithkk this is built into some web-servers. It's nothing about http. If you want to get something running quickly, cd into your public directory and type "python -m SimpleHTTPServer 80"
sorry, put sudo in front of it if you want it to run on port 80
amith@amith-desktop:/$ sudo python -m SimpleHTTPServer 80"
>
?
12:16
@Amithkk if you do that, make sure you cannot traverse outside of your document root (using '..') ;-)
@Amithkk there's a stray double-quote (the command has none of them)

you can only run one server per port

@htorque oh yes it can :P
then i really have to ask it

@htorque you don't happen, by way of a huge coincidence, to own one of O'Reilly's "Kurz & Gut" series? (no idea what they're called in english)
nope, sorry

Extremely lame
Then YOU will have to write it or be more specific about what exactly it is you want. E.g. I don't see what a screenshot would tell you. Also 'dumps the system log' where to?
